This book covers a wide array of topics detailing Whippets. Including comprehensive information relating to dogs and puppies; for sale; rescue; breeders; breeding; training; showing; care; health; canine behavioural psychology; and much more. Whippets are considered a very popular sight-hound breed along with the Greyhound. They are smaller than the Greyhound and therefore generally considered much more manageable as a family pet. The Whippet is still used for racing today, but perhaps because of its gentle intelligent and sensitive temperament this breed is also known for its outstanding role as a family companion. In this book you will find all the information you need in order to decide whether the Whippet is the right breed for you. Not only will you learn the history and basics about this breed, but you will also receive breed-specific tips for feeding, training, and generally caring for and understanding your Whippet. You will also find many useful resources detailing all the essentials you will need, as well as places to buy. By the time you finish this book you will be fully equipped with the knowledge you need to be the best Whippet owner you can be.
In the weeks between when we found our whippet puppy and when we could bring him home, my husband purchased Fielding's book for me. I wanted to learn as much as possible about whippets specifically and dogs in general as this would be my first dog ever.
Fielding's book on whippets is organized well, easy to follow, detailed in its information and examples, and encouraging to read. Even as a first-time dog owner, I didn't feel overwhelmed by the content. Rather, I felt empowered and eager to bring home our puppy.
Whippets has served as a useful reference as our puppy has grown and developed, and it will remain on my shelf for many, many years to come.
Good Overview of Owner Responsibilities and the Whippet Breed
The author obviously loves Whippets and his enthusiasm for them is contagious. The book covers a very broad range of topics... good for an overview, but too broad for many specifics and details. I felt like I was getting introductions to the different areas vice a real education. Good list of reference websites offered at the end.
A good read with UK and US references. Gives you tips, guidance and instruction on key areas but doesn’t feel like a school textbook. I feel better prepared for my new pup and can also come back and check I’m on the right lines later.
