Carolina's in-law's marriage didn't survive the holidays visiting in her and Jackson's new home in Chancey, Georgia. Now both families have left, but she's not sure how much longer she'll still be in the small town. She knew moving teenagers from the Atlanta suburbs to a small Georgia mountain town last year was a horrible idea. She knew opening a B&B for railfans was an even worse plan. What she didn't know, was that her marriage might not survive what was beginning to feel like an honest to goodness train wreck.Oncoming headlights aren't only aimed at her family, the town of Chancey is being set up for a collision that could change everything. And as that unfolds, Carolina's husband Jackson is smack dab in the middle of it all, his hand on the throttle, going full steam ahead.Drama unfolds on the high school stage, but it can't match the drama happening right in Chancey when everything is suddenly on the line. Yet even in the midst of change and heartache, a small town must keep it's sense of humor, and you can count on Chancey to be able to laugh at itself!
“A new voice in Southern Fiction” is how a recent reviewer labels Kay Dew Shostak’s debut novel, "Next Stop, Chancey".
After being raised in a small-town in Tennessee, Kay lived around the country in a variety of settings. Taking a look at the familiar and loved from new perspectives led Kay to see, and then write about, the absurd, the beautiful, and the funny in her South.
After publishing several stories in compilation books and spending a few years in journalism, Kay wandered into writing fiction and found it hard to leave. She currently is working on the fourth book in the Chancey series and living in Fernandina Beach, Florida with her husband.
This was such a fun listen but also had some interesting lessons. Can just imagine my teenage sons when they were like that, and so expect my daughter to be like Savannah in a year or so. She is already a cheerleader princess.
Again it is hard to describe the story or genre it is just easy listening and I am loving the muffin ideas. I am experimenting them whilst listening.
I was given a free copy by the author but this did not impact my review.
I'm all aboard the Chancey train! I am loving Chancey and all the people that live there. This series is getting better and better. An entertaining listen while I'm driving around town.
All the lovable people who live in Chancey seem to live charmed lives. In this book we find out whether Carolina and Jackson will stick with their charmed life or will they give up the whole thing and decide to live apart? Lots of stuff going on...some good, some not so good. Were the friends Carolina made when she first moved to Chancey only fair-weather friends?
Very well written...beautiful descriptive narratives...you can't help liking it.
This story was about a family that made a major change in their life by moving p their home to another part of the country. it was about their adjustment to a small town, making new friends, etc. This was very well written and what could be called a "beach book", appealing to women more so than men.
Derailed in Chancey, Book 3 in this Chancey Series, had a "meatier," more thought-provoking, storyline than the previous books. Makes you stop and think about how often we might take for granted the relationships we have with our spouses and children. Food for thought.
I enjoyed this book. I'm familiar with this part of Georgia, so that made the book even better. A family has moved from the hustle and bustle of an Atlanta suburb to northern Georgia to a small town. They have discovered that all is not sweetness as they anticipated. There is a controversy about how to grow the town and yet preserve the traditions that are important to the town's people. We also have a marital controversy with the main couple who operate a bed and breakfast. The author did a good job of portraying small town life and its peculiarities. This is a fairly quick read and enjoyable. I didn't realized this was the end of a series, but there was enough background that I had no difficulty understanding what was going on, and could read as a stand alone.
Carolina must finally decide how she feels about living in this small Southern town. You'll get involved in her decision, as her friends continue to involve her in their plans for her and her husband is more involved with his business associate, Carter May. This book is full of Southern charm, unique characters, and vivid descriptions and memorable scenes.
This book chronicles the point at which Carolina and Jacksons' marriage falters. It was all too real for me and while there were some laughs, I cried just as much. I loved the transition that comes with a different perspective. Glad they find a way to get back on track with the help of their friends. Can't wait to read the next installment,
Okay... So this is more like a3.5 because I generally like the characters and there were a couple/few spots where Carolina waxes poetic about what she likes about Chancey. But while there was a passable storyline, it wasn't developed. It started, and spent a lot of time on the build-up, and then just suddenly raced to the end! The whole crux of the book was her relationship with Jackson, and that was really given short shift. Very puzzling!
I have fallen in love with this overbearing community of neighbors in the small town of Chancey. They make seemingly big problems feel far less important, and they remind you what really matters in life: having people who love and support you no matter what! I swear Carolina feels like my twin more often than I care to admit.
Negativity can be contagious so be careful when reading this book. I grew up in a small town and get a lot of the story. The main character is sarcastic and insecure which causes her unnecessary pain and confusion. That affects her family. Despite the poor editing and character flaws I am drawn to the series - sigh.
While waiting for some books to come in I picked up this book for my kindle. I didn't expect much, however this was totally boring and as one of your reviewers said "pure rubbish."
I didn't care about any of the characters and the writing was sophomoric. The ending was predictable and unrealistic. Don't bother.
This author needs an editor! The errors did not trip me, but they did make me mad at the author. Of the Chancey books I have read, this was my favorite. The theme was about relationships, and how quickly relationships can fall apart.
It is a big time in Chancey.Projects from years ago are showing up again. The family and friends seem to be heading in different directions.Chaos is the word of the day, every day.Should she leave, should she stay?SO many secrets in Chancey! Suzanne Barbetta was an excellent narrator.I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.'
Let me first say to the author, thank you for this journey. Only has one other story affected as emotionally as this one. I don't know if I felt the book related to past experience, if it was just the story, or if it was the writing. Perhaps all three. I do recommend this book.
It was easy to relate to a lot of the sections in this book on teenagers and leaving home. Main characters develop well and there are some interesting new characters waiting in the wings for their stories to be told
I've never given a bad review! I read the first two books in this series and thought the mom's attitude would get better, but no after only 40 pages into book 3, she's an a**,I can't even imagine what it's like being that miserable for nothing!
This app is making me write something, even though this juvenile book is not particularly deep or thought provoking . I did like the happy ending and the lesson about examining one's life as it is lived.
The story about life in Chauncey was close but something about the writing didn’t sit well. I was put off by the main character most of the time. I wanted to yell speak up and stop pouting several times.
As usual with her books, the author has so many characters it is hard to keep up with who is who. It seems like she was rushing through this book, skipping details. Still a good read.
I didn’t read the first two books in this series but this one stood well on its own. Good book for those who enjoy reading about the ebbs and flows of relationships.
After reading books one and two in this series I was sure it would end with the tracks repaired but I never guessed how it would happen. This book was predictable in some ways but not really. It was a fun read.
I absolutely love this town of Chancey! As I have been reading this series, I find myself entering into small town life. The ups, t he downs, the laughter, the tears. You will experience it all. Now to the next in the series..
I love Ms Shostak's series and appreciate the humor she invests in her very human characters. She has a gift and I am so grateful she is sharing it with her readers! Join us!
