Cooking is a big part of our family time. We also love to open our kids to cultural experiences so Beyond Curry Indian Cookbook by Denise D'Silva Sankhé is an exciting addition to our routine. I was a little intimidated at first as im not as big of a fan of heat and spice as my husband, but I learned quickly that there is much more to this style. They start with a numbered map that labels the regions as well as type of dishes that are typically eaten which servers well as reference throughout the book. The introduction explains the writers background and passion for this authentic food. The first chapter is probably my favorite, covering the rich history and cultural diversity of the regions and even talks of the religious restrictions as well as how climate plays it's part in each regions cuisine. The sections on stocking your pantry, spices and their uses as well as common equipment used give an extra comfort level for beginners. The second section provides a list of home remedies from special blends that are easily made and I also love that with each recipe they list which region they are from as well as whether they are vegan, gluten-free and so on. The rest of the sections are separated into appetizers, rice, meats, drinks and many others. I would definitely recommend this if you are looking to spice up your culinary skills.
I received this in exchange for a fair and honest review.

Indian food has the biggest claim over my heart than any other cuisine on this planet, and curry is the reason for that. I could devour curry all day, every day without ever growing tired. So when I saw this cookbook saying beyond curry I couldn't resist picking it up. Could anything be better than curry? I doubted it.

The recipes are delicious, and I developed a love for the Paneer in Red Gravy recipe among others. Each recipe is mostly simple and could be easy for anyone to learn. The author was kind enough to include a prelude to each recipe stating whether or not it was vegetarian, egg-free, gluten-free, peanut-free, soy-free, or allium-free. I could see that being a great inclusion to a cookbook for some people, it wasn't an important thing to me but it was a nice touch. I loved how educational the cookbook was, and I learned a lot about Indian cuisine.

The biggest issue with Beyond Curry Indian Cook was the fact that the Kindle version I read didn't have photographs of the recipes, instead, there were maps of the region in India that the recipe is from. That was an interesting touch, but I would have enjoyed having photographs alongside the maps.

Useful and unique

I have many indian cookbooks including the well known Madhur Jeffrey’s, so it is difficult to find new cookbooks that can add to the current crop. But this book has enough different dishes that it is worth owning. It’s got a nice selection of regional dishes, interesting beverages and a couple of desserts that are not too complicated. Recipes also include a quick option to speed things up, explains the more unusual ingredients and is very friendly for beginning indian cooks.

A decent cookbook with some interesting fusion cuisine examples. It does rate the spiciness of each dish and if you eat meat may make a decent introductory cookbook.

Great recipes but lots of specialty ingredients needed that would take me awhile to find in my city.
