Emily Bone's easy reader, Bugs, in the Usborne Young Beginners series, copyright 2016, is filled with lots of great facts and drawings. It is a great nonfiction resource. Young children (3+) and even middle grade students will delight in the beautiful digitally re-touched illustrations and format of brief facts. I would suggest this nonfiction book is a Fountas & Pinnell reading level J-L. The book presents various identifying features and habits of insects, arthropods, arachnids and mollusks.

Characteristic of genre: Although without a glossary or bold headers to make the subtopics more easily referenced, this informational text certainly is attractive to children. Subtopics include, "Some bugs look like other things," with a giant leaf insect, stick insect, orchid mantises, and dead leaf butterfly for examples.

Characteristic of genre: Most ideas are on two-page spreads, as in "A butterfly lays eggs on a plant" with images of the butterfly life cycle. The book contains a 2-page spread of a true-sized atlas moth.

Although the title "Bugs" is misleading because the book does contain other species, the intended audience of young emergent readers will be delighted by the many critters to spark conversation and make connections.

There were more details than my twos could handle, but it was fairly simple to change and shorten the phrases to fit my class. It does talk about bug eating, biting, and dying, so just a heads up if you are uncomfortable with your child learning about those things at this time. The illustrations were colorful and captured their attention, and lead them to make observations, comparisons and ask questions. It's an information book as opposed to a story.

Rekommenderas starkt!

Så vacker att läsa, fantastiska illustrationer. Det lyfter hela boken, och då är den full av intressant fakta till att börja med. Ett litet fynd från biblioteket.
