The thrilling novella from New York Times bestselling author Allison Brennan.Demonologist Anthony Zaccardi can't save the twelve priests brutally slaughtered at a California mission, but he's determined to send the killer—an ancient demon—back to hell. And when tough, sexy local sheriff Skye McPherson refuses to believe something supernatural is at work, Anthony realizes that to deliver us from evil, he must first win Skye's trust, then her heart.

I really enjoyed this story. For me it was like reading a story like "The Exorcist ". It scared the crap out of me, and yet I couldn’t put the book down because I had to find out what happened next.
Anthony and Skye were brave, intelligent, kickass characters. Loved the storyline and the mystery.
I now want to read the rest of the series.
"A copy of this book has been provided by publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review"
When Demonologist Anthony Zaccardi gets a call from his friend, Rafe, begging him to come to California, Anthony drops everything to get the first plane out. Rafe is living in a mission with a dozen priests. He says the priests are acting strangely and wants Anthony to check the place out. But when Anthony arrives, he finds twelve dead priests. Rafe is injured and in a coma. The local sheriff, Skye McPherson, doesn't trust Anthony. She also doesn't buy his story about demons. Unfortunately, if Skye doesn't listen to him soon, she may be the next victim.
I thought this story had a unique plot. But I didn't buy into Anthony and Skye falling in love over the course of a couple of days. My rating: 4 Stars.
Whether this is the first time reading DELIVER US FROM EVIL or the story was previously discovered when it was part of the WHAT YOU CAN’T SEE anthology, learning how the Seven Deadly Sins series began will bring much enjoyment. Allison Brennan is known for thrilling mysteries and suspenseful stories, and the paranormal aspects in this enthralling novella add even more intrigue. I have always been fascinated with the supernatural, and often wonder if something unexplained could actually have an unearthly cause. The author makes the numerous strange events in the book come across as profoundly convincing, making me ponder if this fictional account could perhaps turn out to be partly true. DELIVER US FROM EVIL has bizarre mysteries and terrifying developments.
When the behavior of a dozen priests at a California mission becomes odd, a demonologist hopes to uncover what is causing their problem. But before Anthony Zaccardi can arrive in America and learn the possible reason, the men are all killed. There are no suspects, but he thinks those responsible maybe be demons. When he mentions his suspicions to the sheriff in charge of the case, Skye McPherson feels certain humans are to blame, not some supernatural being.
It looks as though some type of ritual took place at the mission when the men were murdered, and Anthony has a feeling it summoned a demon which needs to be quickly returned to hell or more deaths will occur. Unfortunately, Skye refuses to go along with his theory, so her investigation will only be focused on people. Anthony must have her cooperation in order to stop what will surely happen in the future, but getting Skye to have faith in his beliefs will take much persuasion.
A wide variety of characters are featured in the story, and the personality of each one brings something unique to the scenes in which they appear. From anyone with harmful intentions to a person who is only trying to do the right thing, their conduct let me know their motivations. Anthony is all about doing what he can to keep demons from reaching their goals in the human world, and his biggest battle unexpectedly takes place in a small coastal California town. When he meets Skye, he wants to keep the stubborn woman safe from the hidden danger in her community while also trying to locate a demon. She tries to solve the murders logically, and though there are countless questions, she just cannot accept the explanation Anthony gives as the truth. As these two butt heads and look for answers, their awareness of each other surprisingly grows very strong. How their relationship changes from constantly at odds to something more sexual is influenced by many outside factors, and any passion between them very intense. Both are determined individuals, and neither is willing to give up when they think they are correct about a subject. I feared for each of them on different occasions, as several incidents are dangerous with a great deal of peril.
The idea behind what is happening in the story is unsettlingly scary, and the whole concept captured my interest all the way through. Allison Brennan has written a thought-provoking paranormal story, as DELIVER US FROM EVIL is extremely compelling.
I voluntarily reviewed the book received via NetGalley, and these comments are my honest opinion
There is the potential for a good mystery/thriller in these pages. Sadly, that better story didn't show up to play. It might have helped if the "romance" had been sacrificed to the demons as it is neither convincing or inspiring.
DELIVER US FROM EVIL by Allison Brennan was a really good read, it is by far the most of out my usual reading genre that I will read this year (even though its not what I usually read I have to say I really enjoyed reading this book).
This is a stand alone book, the story is very well written and developed and the plot is very fast paced and will keep you guessing till the very end as to who done it, the mystery and suspense of this book had my heart pounding and biting my nails till the very end of the book.
Demonologst Anthony Zaccardi is called by his best friend Rafe to come to the mission where Rafe is taking care of 12 retired preists (not really retired just ones that have witnessed events that have left them traumatized and unfit to work), but by the time Antony arrives at the mission all 12 priests have been slaughtered and his best friend is a coma and Anthony arrives just in time for the police chief Skye McPherson to name him as the number two suspect (Rafe is of course the number one). This book will follow Anthony and Skye as Skye tries to find out who murdered the 12 priests and as Anthony tries to find out who rose the demon that killed the 12 priests and at the same time convince Skye that it was not a person who killed the priest but three people who help to bring the demon to the land of the living giving him the power to kill the priest.
DELIVER US FROM EVIL by Allison Brennan is a book that has it all: mystery, demons coming from Hell, suspense, and to top it all off there is a little bit of a love story thrown in there to make this a well rounded stand alone book. I would give DELIVER US FROM EVIL 4/5 stars.
Anthony is a demonologist who goes to California to help a friend but he is to late. By the time he gets there a mass murder has been committed. Anthony knows at once this is the work of demons. Skye is the local sherriff who has a background story which makes her against anything supernatural.
This is a short story and while I enjoyed it I wish the author had not tried to create anything romantic. I just did not buy into the relationship and it seemed silly. Outside of that I liked this short story about demons which are evil and men with religious beliefs it is a refreshing change in this genere.
Deliver Us from Evil by Allison Brennan is a standalone romance suspense novel. Anthony Zaccardi is our hero, and he is a demonologist. What is a demonologist? Someone who can sense & hear, as well as know everything about demons and hell. Anthony is summoned by a close friend to help him with a very unsettling situation at a private monastery. 12 priests, who have faced terrible evils, were sent to this California mission over the years to live in quiet, and safety from those evils. Years before, Anthony built a tabernacle, with spells that would protect those in the mission from demons.
By the time Anthony arrives at the mission, all 12 priest are dead, having been viciously murdered. The friend who called Anthony for help was the only survivor, and he is in a coma. At the time Anthony came upon the atrocious scene, the police arrive and take over the investigation. Sheriff Skye McPherson, our heroine, questions Anthony, whom she now looks on as a suspect. Anthony tries to explain about demons and the supernatural, which Skye brushes off as the words of a fanatic. She does not believe in demons, even if the strange murders depict the work of something out of the ordinary.
What follows is an exciting action packed adventure that has Anthony working with Skye, which will also start an unlikely romance between them. Skye fights off the attraction; since she is not sure if she can trust him, especially with his claims of demons and Satan. Even when she begins to see unusual happenings, which include Anthony engulfed in fire, with no marks. Skye refuses to believe the possibility of the supernatural, and ignores what is happening in front of her as nightmares. This ignorance will bring her to face an evil being, in a deathly situation that threatens her life.
The last third of the book will have us on the edge of your seat, wondering if Skye will survive, and if Anthony can save her. Deliver Us From Evil was very exciting and a different type of read for me. It reads very well as a standalone, and if you like the supernatural with romance suspense, than give this book a try.
I enjoyed the book. Although one thing, Latin is ancient. There is Ecclesial Latin that is a bit younger, but Latin is ancient. No archaic forms like with English. Petty, I know. Still it was a good read and I suggested to a friend to read it. Hope she likes it too.
