This comprehensive study focuses on the relatively new genre of autobiographical comics (one commonly held view has the form emerging only since 1972). The writing can be academic and dry but it's not especially difficult. And if you do plow through you'll be rewarded with a clear understanding of the history, the important artists, and canonical works of this form. Turns out there's much more beyond Maus and Fun Home.

A really good resource if you want to learn more about autobio comics from a more academic perspective. The way it’s written is completely accessible, easy to read and understand which makes it a joy to read!
Also, loads of great resources for further reading and heaps of comic recommendations.

Remind me never to read a dry, academic text about comic books ever again. The scholarly jargon got me down, but worse was the author’s insistence on always referring to a work and it’s creator every single time. The first time you mention Fun Home, sure call it “Alison Bechdel’s Fun Home”, but the next 100 times, just say Fun Home. Since he mostly refers to only about five “key texts”, we have to read the phrase “as in Marjane Satrapi’s Persepolis and Alison Bechdel’s Fun Home” over as over again.
