Desperate to prevent an abusive arranged marriage, Princess Araya flees to a neighboring kingdom, only to land at the mercy of the impulsive Crown Prince Thoredmund, who provides refuge in a secluded forest and teaches her survival skills. Her surprise at the unexpected hold the prince has on her heart mirrors his shock at falling for the one girl he can’t have.
As the young couple’s feelings for each other grow, the fragile alliance between the two kingdoms threatens to break apart. With a vengeful duke and an enraged king fast on their trail, Thor and Araya must decide how much they’re willing to risk for love.
Under the Trees is Ashley Maker’s debut novel. When she’s not working on her next book, Ashley spends much of her time procrastinating on social media, relaxing with her husband and two daughters, and writing companion songs on her acoustic guitar. She has a bachelor’s degree in English, worked a short stint as a book editor, and lives in a small town in Oklahoma.

“Go. Find the girl,” I said. “Follow her.”
This was a YA fantasy story, about a prince and princess who fell in love.
Araya was an okay character, and she was brave to run away the way she did, even if her plans were a little poor. Thor came across as quite a capable young man, but his plans were lacking a little too.
The storyline in this was about Araya running away from home after being attacked by her betrothed, and Thor helping her to hide from her father’s men. We did also get a slow, fairy-tale like romance, with the characters falling in love with each other and sharing a chaste kiss.
The ending to this was very much a happily-ever-after, and things all worked out okay for both Araya and Thor.
A realistic fairy tale! I wasn't sure I would enjoy this book at first, but I'm glad I kept reading. It is a wonderful book about young love fighting against fear and expectations. Araya is a strong character who knew she needed to learn to fend for herself, and Thor is a knight in shining armor without being overbearing. I would've loved to read more about how their lives turned out, but I guess I'll just be happy knowing they probably lived happily ever after!
WoW ... What a great book! I'm not a fan of historical stories ... But this author changed that for me. I started this book today while in the car rider line waiting for my kids... I could not put it down.. I was reading it on my phone while I cooked dinner how sad right lol IT just shows how good it is. The twist and turns keep you glued to the story. I cant wait to see what else this author puts out because I will be reading it.
Not bad. I really enjoyed it. No fillers, not that long but it had everything it needed to make a great story. Little twist at the end, had me shaking my head, could not believe who it was in the end. Definitely will keep an eye out for this author.
Sometimes, all you want is to read a fairy tale and believe - just for a moment - that good people win, and princesses really do get their happily ever after. Under the Trees gives you that... but it’s also so much more. It’s an empowering story that says: stop dreaming, start fighting. And at the same time, it gently reminds you that it’s okay to ask for help.
It’s a story about love. Young, innocent love (because sometimes it really can be that simple). It doesn’t tell you that you need a knight in shining armor, or that your life only gains meaning through someone else. But if love happens to find you? It’s okay to embrace it.
At its core, this book is about hope. About believing there’s always a way out, even when things feel impossible. That even if you’re a princess with a doomed future, your choices still matter. That you can take charge of your life.
What really stood out to me was the simplicity of the storytelling. It’s incredibly easy to get into, and the plot stays focused on its main premise while still giving you a few twists. The romance might be quick, but it never felt rushed or out of place. It works within the world it builds. After all, it is a fairy tales, and sometimes a glance is all you need to spark everything. There’s something about that purity and innocence that makes the story hit even deeper. If you’ve ever forgotten what it feels like to love without overthinking, or to help someone simply because your heart tells you to, this book brings that feeling back.
I really enjoyed this book! The writer is very gifted with painting word pictures, and each scene enfolded with beauty before my eyes. The writing was flawless and the book was very well edited. Araya and Thor were likable enough to enjoy reading about, as both of them had wonderful qualities, however I can't say I absolutely fell in love with the characters. Even though I enjoyed the story, I didn't find myself unable to put the book down. Either way, this is a great debut novel!
As a friend of the author, a person who read this in its original draft, and practically all the drafts afterwards, I can easily say this is one of the best books I have ever read. And anyone who doesn't pick this up is beyond missing out. I won't write a full review or say anything even remotely spoilery. You'll just have to read it for yourself. I am beyond happy that Ashley's dream for this book has finally come true. I remember when I was harassing her in emails about is there was any word from various places about this. So for this to be an actual book now makes me beyond happy. It doesn't seem like it, but it's because there are no actual words I can use. So just read this!! It's a beautiful YA historical romance that will warm any person's heart with the characters' chemistry. <3 <3 <3 <3
Where do I start with this book... I read it from it's very first draft, and even in that stage I loved it. The characters, each unique grabbed me, the romance was so cute I couldn't help but like it, the writing was flawlessly smooth and mostly, the plot was just so damn likable.
Under the Trees features a runaway princess who you can't not like for her strength and determination, and a prince hell-bent on defying his father. When he sees the princess run by on a horse, it is the start of a romance that just takes you away. I don't really know how to put into words how much I like this book. It's a fast and fun read that will keep you interested from start to finish.
Another reason I enjoy this one so much is the genre I think. I'll admit to be a fan of the historical romances, the paperbacks you see in stores. But take that genre with younger characters...It's hard to find a YA historical romance that is NOT high fantasy as well. I would suggest this to anyone really--anyone who likes a cute romance, all historical romance fans, any lovers of YA.
This is a delightful Y.A historical romance. It was quite short and I would have liked a bit more development of most of the characters and certain situations which is why I deducted one star in my rating.
Under the Trees has a star-crossed lovers concept that is executed to the best of Ashley Maker's writing abilities, it's light and sweet with elements of danger, suspense, romance and issues of abuse bringing an edgier quality to it. The main male protagonist is everything a knight in shining armour should be, he's brave, strong, handsome and always willing to help the damsel in distress which is exactly how he and Araya come to meet. In contrast our beautiful heroine is frightened and running scared from her tormentors into a land of unknown, where her naivety and innocence both intrigue and annoy her rescuer but she is a complex and multi-layered character with many attributes. When I found myself irritated that she was once again the damsel fleeing in distress or she didn't know how to do certain things, her inner musings show us how much she detests the fact that as a princess she was never allowed to learn or fend for herself, though she most ardently wants to and so begins her journey of self-discovery and independence and love with Prince Thor (awesome name by the way) at her side to guide her if need be.
It's a well written romance, a little slow perhaps at the beginning but it soon picks up pace, delivering a good dose of adventure and armour and what better way to while away an afternoon, than with prince's, princesses and their noble steeds.
I received a free e-copy of UNDER THE TREES from the author in exchange for a fair review.
Princess Arya is engaged to be married, but the marriage promises to be brutish and violent. Forced to save herself, she runs away, and finds herself hiding in a neighboring kingdom, with the enigmatic Crown Prince Thor as her only friend. Of course, she doesn't know how much she can trust him, and Thor, himself, is under pressure from his father and his people to keep them safe - not harbor a princess, an act which could, in fact, incite a war. Particularly once Arya's father, brother, and fiance arrive in Thor's court and demand a search of the lands until Arya is found.
While, admittedly, romance is not my first pick of a genre, Maker's tale is light, fun, and amazingly adorable (see that technical speak?). Not only that, but there's a complicated relationship between Arya and Thor - while their attraction is immediate, what I appreciated the most about this tale was Arya's complex character: her hesitation to put herself and her feelings above her freedom and the fate of two nations. She spends the novel questioning whether she truly loves Thor or whether it's simply an infatuation, and on the other side of the board is Thor's maneuvering of a complicated political situation where his impulsivity could have massive repercussions.
All in all, while UNDER THE TREES is at its heart a romance, don't let it fool you: there's plenty of action and conflict - internal and external - to delight all fans of fantasy. Consider UNDER THE TREES the kind of realistic fairy tale you've been waiting for.
Under the Trees is an enchanting read that captured me from the very beginning. The opening is one of the very best I have read; it starts right in the action, immediately grabbing your attention. I also felt immediately connected to Araya because her fear and emotions come through so well in the first chapter.
The style of writing is excellent which helps the story flow very well. The book is written in the alternating first person perspectives of Araya and Thoredmund. This can be very tricky and was handled very well by the author. The characters voices were distinctive and it is interesting to see how the two characters viewed the unfolding events.
The two main characters are very strong and well thought out. I like how Araya is very strong, yet at times she can also be quite timid which I think is a very interesting presentation and also quite realistic. Her determination is an admirable trait which makes her likable. I also like how she isn’t just a damsel in distress, she also has the ability to stand her own ground. Thoredmund is very tentative and kind, and instantly likeable. I find it interesting how the other characters – especially his father – perceptions of him change as the book progresses. I really felt connected to the characters and definitely cared about what would happen to them. Another good point is that the romance isn’t forced and develops in a very natural way.
The minor characters in Under the Trees are as well thought-out as the two main characters. All of the characters have depth which is great to see. Often authors focus so much on their main characters that they forget to develop the others, but that is not the case here.
The world building is fairly good but Maker doesn’t go into too much detail, which isn’t really a problem as it isn’t essential to the plot. She alludes to different traditions in the different kingdoms which is a nice touch. The tensions between the kingdoms is well written and there is actually a reason for it which is explained.
Although the plot is simple, it is good and captivating. The fast-paced nature of the novel keeps the interest of the reader without glazing over the characters development. The story was certainly not predictable and there were a few twists that left me stunned. It has a satisfying ending, but not in a cliché way.
Overall, Under the Trees is quite a fast, easy read with very likable characters and a plot which will keep you hooked. There is just something about this book which I absolutely love and which made me give it five stars. Even if you are not usually interested in this kind of genre I would definitely give this gem a read.
This book was so much fun to read! It was beautifully written and very captivating. I honestly wasn't sure what to expect from it going in, since it's such a small book, but I was very surprised by how amazing Under The Trees was. The writing was beautiful and the way this book is developed is extremely captivating. I loved this story and wish I could read more about the characters and world!
One of my favorite things about the story were the two main characters: Araya and Thor. I loved how strong Araya was and her bravery in her attempts to escape her arranged marriage. She was unique, fun to read about, and read like she was a real human with faults and imperfections. Thor was ahead of his time, brave, and I thought he was very respectable for all of the tough calls he made during a time where his actions weren't really... popular. Together these characters were super cute!! I loved their chemistry. Somehow this romance developed in a lovely slow burn despite the ever pressing page number and I loved it!! They were designed perfectly together and brought out the best in each other, which makes my heart happy.
The political drama in this book was one of the main aspects of this story that had me reading until way past my bed time. I loved the variety of ties and all the tension that poured from these pages. Ashley Maker's ability to shape words that drive the point in deeper was remarkable.
I had a great time reading this book, and a very exhausting one since I could hardly put it down. It's a fun quick read full of chemistry, political intrigue, and unlikable characters that made me scowl. The way the story was built made every moment more enjoyable and the writing itself is beautiful! I feel like this is the perfect book to curl up and read in December, especially if you're trying to hit your reading goal last minute. It's just too good to put down and so much fun to read.
This book is like a breathe of fresh air! Definitely the type of book you'll read in one sitting!
I got this book right after it's release and I regret not reading it immediately. Princess Araya is the type of heroine you'd admire. Yes, she did have her moments but she made up on it by proving how strong she can be. I admire her willingness to learn how to stand on her own and to be able to defend herself. Prince Thoredmund, on the other hand, is totally the knight in shinning armor a reader is looking for. He's the perfect combination of a good heart, good personality, admirable skills.. definitely a King in the making! (And it doesn't hurt that he's also good looking. Swoon worth good looking!) He's a great hero, not overbearing at all.
I also love how the story developed and how it ended. A Prince like Thor and a Princess like Araya unquestionably deserve a happy ending.
Overall, Under the Trees was a book that I recommend to anyone who's looking for something new and something fresh. It was fast-paced you'll never want to put it down. It has amazing characters you'll love. And most of all, a story that you'll never forget.
Review for Under the Trees by Ashley Maker I gave this book 5 stars
A book for any mood, time, or age. If you want to escape into a different world, of history, love, amazing literature, and time, then this is the book for you. I picked this book up, and didn't put it down until I had finished the last page. This is a book that will captivate you, and capture your heart. The love story in Under the Trees is so believable and real that you'll honestly fall in love with Prince Thor. He's a strong an handsome prince who's only care is keeping Princess Araya safe. This book leaves you with a complete ending, a great story, and a wonderful warm feeling. Thank you for a truly amazing, and wholesome book.
*** I received a copy of this book in exchange for a honest review.***
As a huge fan of historical fiction, I was excited to sign-up for this story after reading the synopsis. And, I was not disappointed. I found both Thor and Araya to be extremely likable characters. Usually I get annoyed with heroines in romances, often times they are clingy and self absorbed. Araya was a delite to read about. She is wise beyond her years, compassionate, and not at all a damsel in distress. She is that kick ass female that I would like my daughter to read about when she is older. The subject matter in this story is heavy, yet written with decorum. Also, I have to give props to the editors and betas for this story. It's been a while since I've read a story that does not need to be red penned from cover to cover. Great story, and I would definitely say appropriate for a older teen audience.
This was such a pleasureto read and I couldn't bring myself to put it down. The author's creativity brought this story to life and the characters were strong and jumped right out of the pages. This debut novel is definitely a HIT!
I enjoyed reading this book, it is a light read and will fit for any of the age group.
The book is very short and that is why a reduced star. I like reading books with more characterisation and even more word development which was lacking in this book.
It was overall good one and anyone wants to read a light romance then you ahould defenetiely pick this one up...
(I received a copy from the author, In exchange for an honest review.)
I didn't love the characters in this, but they were okay.
This struggled to keep my interest at times, so it wasn't a book I loved. It started to drag slightly because of it, but thankfully, because the book wasn't very long, it wasn't too bad.
Under the Trees by Ashley Maker Review 2/7/17 ARC from the Author
Abuse, arranged marriage, suspense and a love story!
Desperate to prevent an abusive arranged marriage, Princess Araya flees to a neighboring kingdom, only to land at the mercy of the impulsive Crown Prince Thoredmund, who provides refuge in a secluded forest and teaches her survival skills. Her surprise at the unexpected hold the prince has on her heart mirrors his shock at falling for the one girl he can't have. As the young couple's feelings for each other grow, the fragile alliance between the two kingdoms threatens to break apart. With a vengeful duke and an enraged king fast on their trail, Thor and Araya must decide how much they're willing to risk for love. Even if staying together means starting a war.
What did I like? This was a great little story that really kept me glued to the pages. I loved the twists and turns that this took. The reference to the trees and delicious forests descriptions made it all the more enjoyable. The best part about the whole book was the feeling of right that the Crown Prince had towards the Princess. If only more men in the world would have this attitude towards women, we might not have so many abused.
What will you like? Even though this is a fantasy it rings true to the times today and gives you a thought that should be considered carefully. True love comes at the oddest of times and no one can stop it from happening… we just should go with the flow. I like the way the author incorporated this into the storyline. Ok, I know! It’s fantasy but heck I want to believe it. Come on so do you, just admit it! LOL The story is well developed and runs at a steady clip plus reads easily. The characters are superb and we can relate to each of them. I just wish the author would continue the story to the next phase of their love together.
I received this from the author for an honest opinion with no compensation.
A beautiful fantasy romance, Into the Trees follows Princess Araya’s flight from home in search of freedom.
Araya is escaping an arranged marriage which looms over her like a shadow. Crossing into a neighboring kingdom, what is her luck? She runs into that kingdom’s prince, who has an impulse for helping people in need; hearing her story, Prince Thor swears to get her to freedom—and loses his heart to her on the way.
It’s a quick and charming escape for those who love fantasy worlds, written at a pace to reflect Araya’s urgency. Betrothed to a disgusting man, she would rather abandon her life of luxury and her title than marry him.
However, it’s not that easy. Having been raised a princess, she doesn’t know the first thing about living as a commoner; she can’t start a fire or figure out how people greet each other in a different kingdom.
Small details such as these make incredible worldbuilding. More books ought to pay attention to customs, otherwise cultures sound unrealistically similar. When at times the book got too fast-paced, Maker’s worldbuilding made up for it; she put satisfying thought into the realm she created.
I loved the scenes in the forest! I could almost smell the nature and trees—the river, moisture, flowers. This forest sometimes had more life than the characters wandering it.
Most of this tale takes place in the forest, where great love and panic unfold. Could these trees whisper about what they saw after the story ended? I wouldn’t be surprised, for the environment teemed with magic.
I felt the resolution was rather abrupt, but the ending satisfied me as a reader. Under the Trees is a tale where beauty and magic are balanced with corruption; there’s a charming prince as well as dark characters quick to abuse their power.
Araya wants to escape a grim fate; she’s willing to leave her comfort zone for it. The story sweeps you into her journey, so you experience both giddy love and foreboding fear. I finished this book satisfied that everyone had gotten the ending they deserved.
If only there were more books like this–focusing on the beauty of love in a lively setting, like that place under the trees.
This was my first read to review so big thanks to the author for allowing me to have a free copy!
I've given "Under The Trees" 4☆
This is the kind of book I like to read, it's an easy read that would be perfect for rainy Sunday afternoons. I'd describe this kind of story as very "Mills&Boon-y" minus the sex. This is a very sweet, innocent tale.
The story is told from the points of view of Araya and Thor, young royals from rival neighbouring kingdoms. POV are separated by chapter so it's easy to keep track of whose eyes you are seeing the story from. We start with Araya in a desperate race against the Kings guards. Running from a life she can't commit to, running from a man who broke her. She escapes capture but soon comes across an entirely new problem in the shape of Thor. The fire of young love flickers a few times but will it ever fully catch?
For the most part, I found the way the characters were written to be quite hit or miss. In some chapters it felt like I knew them, could picture them and their mannerisms, and in others it was almost like they were a stranger. I particularly enjoyed Thor's POV chapters, maybe more so than Araya. Some of Thor's inner monologue was a bit cringy but it was mostly good. He's a romantic hero.
This story does have a theme of abuse, physical and implied (attempted) sexual. I've had experience of this so I did feel quite close to Araya's character in the scenes where she struggles with the aftermath of flashbacks and attacks.
There was a minor twist at the end which I didn't see coming, but it didn't hit particularly hard as it felt quite small rather than earth shattering like I'm sure Araya felt it to be.
The book ends in a place where a sequel could possibly come from it. I would read it if onewas written but I do like where it's been left.
I would recommend this book to fans of romance, and possibly to historical fiction fans too.
Ashley Maker is an amazingly wonderful writer. Her characters really come to life in the pages of her book. Great characters and good writing and storytelling are my kryptonite, and the author did a superb job with this debut novel of hers.
I adore strong female characters and Princess Araya; despite the delicateness of her upbringing, seemed determined to survive and build a new life for herself. I took an immediate liking to Thor as well. He's a brave and fierce prince, and has a heart of gold. The side characters piqued my interest as well, and I am excited to hear that Ashley will be writing a second book based on one of the characters mentioned in this one.
I love the plot and how each scene was almost perfectly executed at a pace that was quick enough that I didn't feel any part of it needed more focus for a novel of this length. The author did a wonderful job packing in all the action scenes and the romance within a reasonable amount of pages.
I do wish there was a bit more written towards the end though as it felt like a cliffhanger of sorts. The two characters also fell for each other fairly quickly so it was a bit of an insta-love thing, which I didn't quite mind, but it might not be everyone's cup of tea.
Nevertheless, if you like reading about princes and princesses, love stories relating to survival, adventure and romance, I definitely recommend this. I certainly had a lot of fun reading Under the Trees and it is going into my to-read again pile for sure.
I was gifted a copy of this book for an honest review. I put this book off till the last of four I read because the words historical fiction turned me off to it. I'm so not a historical fiction/romance reader but found myself really loving this book.
This book has a little bit of everything in it and Ashley Maker did a good job writing the book. It's got elements of danger, suspense, romance, adventure, and issues dealing with abuse. I'd have run like the wind too if I was going to be stuck for the rest of my life in an abusive arranged marriage. I can't even imagine how an arranged marriage would be besides miserable to not love the man your married to.
This book seemed like a fairytale in ways to me and I really enjoyed it. We meet Princess Araya who through no fault of her own has no education or experience. She was never allowed to learn or to fend for herself and she runs Runs to a neighboring kingdom where she meets Thor. He's a prince and becomes Arayas knight in shining armour. He is ways willing to help Araya learn or in any other way she needs help. He is brave, strong, and handsome. This meeting lead to an journey of self discovery, independence, and love for Araya with Thor at her side.
It's beautifully written A book I'm glad I got the chance to read.
In some ways, Under The Trees is a typical fairy-tale romance, and one could be forgiven for taking it as just that, but I found it to be more. UtT turns the traditional fairy tale on its head just enough to where you can't really take anything for granted. I enjoyed the characters, the dialogue seemed realistic, and Ashley's writing style makes the book fun to read. I would definitely recommend this (and have in fact done so).
So let me start... the beginning kind of threw me off and I wanted to shut my kindle off, but I am so glad that I didn't other wise I wouldn't have met Prince Thor, aka hunk-a-licious. I'm not sure what is was but the book just pulled me in like I was in a trance and I couldn't stop reading it. Araya, well she seemed like a loose cannon, wasn't sure what to think of her, a little crazy maybe?! lol No, just a princess running away from her fears. I wouldn't have blamed her for why she chose to run away from her kingdom. That jerk of a Duke named Wendel. #LOSER The more I kept reading, the more I felt a part of the story and wanted to jump in and just scream at certain times. I highly would recommend this story to anyone and everyone. If you believe in happy every after than this is a must read. Two kingdoms almost at war, the story begins with a sad and fearful beginning with a happy ending.
This is a beautiful love story of two young adults who find something that neither of them were looking for...
What happens when a runaway meets a prince?
Araya would rather live a lonely existence than marry a man whom she does not love or even like.
Prince Thor discovers her identity and promises to help keep her hidden. He desperately wants to protect Araya and earn her trust, these new instincts confuse him but he can't help feeling drawn to her and knows he must fight his attraction, there is no way for them to be together...or is there a way?
However - two kingdoms are at risk.
Will Thor keep Araya safe or will she be found by those who are supposed to love her but seem intent on causing heartache and misery?
Just one-click and you can discover what happens Under the trees...
The characters and plot lines were well developed. I found the characters to be interesting. Araya has been set up to wed Duke Wendel, by her father. The Duke is a horrible man, so she flees her kingdom of Rowlst, to another Kingdom called Braythel , ruled by Prince Thor. He lets her pass onto his lands, and protects her from the ones who are following her. Of course, They fall in love. This book is told in alternating perspectives from both Araya and Thor which really kept things interesting and gives the reader more insight into the thoughts and emotions of both characters. I really enjoyed the way the love bloomed between Araya and Thor. I really don't read historical romance, But I loved this one. This was a great book, I would highly suggest this book to anyone who likes a happy ending to a love story. I am very excited to read more from this author.
Let me first start by saying that I have read quite a few historical romances which I have loved. Having said that, this book was nothing like the others I've read and I thought it was just such a beautiful love story. Thor and Araya were such great and compelling characters. I love that the author made Araya so strong and unwilling to accept her duty when it was just not right for her at a time where a daughters wishes or desires were just not considered. I admired Araya and I fell a little in love with Thor lol. Overall, this was such a great book and I really look forward to reading more from this author.
I believe that every one wants to meet Prince Charming and live happily ever after...this story grabbed me from the first page and kept me routing for the characters in a world that is far beyond any place my imagination could take me. The characters were real and when reading you certainly feel vested in Princess Araya. I personally love a strong woman character and this book did not disappoint.
This will be a story that I will share with my daughter and I encourage you to read it and share away. Ms. Maker has done a fabulous job bring all the facets we look for together in Under the Trees!
