The path of romance rarely runs smoothly for the X-Men, and that goes double for mutantkind's most ill-fated couple: Gambit and Rogue! The would-be lovers who dare not touch face ghosts from their pasts in adventures filled with thieves, assassins, reunions and revenge! Remy LeBeau returns to New Orleans when he hears rumors his late wife isn't so late after all. But the key to fully reviving Bella Donna lies within the Thieves Guild that Gambit turned his back on! Will Remy's father welcome him home with open arms? Or will his in-laws in the Assassins Guild meet him first with closed fists? There's a tithe to be collected, and Gambit may pay the price! But will it be Rogue who suffers the most? Love hurts!

Collects Gambit (1993) #1-4, Rogue (1995) #1-4.

Collects the first Gambit and Rogue miniseries from the early 90's. In the Gambit miniseries, Gambit heads to New Orleans after his brother is murdered. There his past catches up to him and he gets embroiled is a power struggle between the Thieves and Assassins Guilds. Rogue tags along and accidentally steals some of Bella Donna's memories. The plot is convoluted and motivations sometimes don't make sense. Lee Weeks provides artwork reminiscent of Joe Kubert.

In the Rogue miniseries, Bella Donna is looking for revenge and kidnaps Cody, the boy Rogue accidentally sent into a coma as a teenager. Gambit of course follows Rogue to New Orleans. The plot is much more straight forward and kind of boring. The late Mike Wieringo provides some fantastic art. I always found Ringo's cartoony art a refreshing change of pace from the gritty 90's artists.

The Good: You do get a look into Gambit's history. Mike Weiringo's art is always a pleasure.

The Bad: These plots are not so good today.

The Ugly: The names of Bella Donna's henchmen are ridiculous, i.e. Gris Gris.

Some bits and parts were re-reads for me, but this was an okay story.

I love them both so much. 💓

I like Remy's flirtatious nature: when he sees someone he likes he just goes for it, no reservations, but at the same time he's a big ol' romantic, too. He does whatever he wants, but he's also aware & respectful of other people's boundaries (although he does have a tendency to give a playful lil push, to maybe get what he wants). The Chaotic Neutral of it all. 💕

When it comes to Rogue, I think her not-wanting-to-be-touched is something a lot of people can relate to for different reasons. For me, I'm drawn to this story element because I'm asexual, so I'm interested in the type of relationship these two crazy kids could have - there is so much more to being in a relationship than kissing/sex! I myself have been in a relationship with someone with a much higher libido, so it's interesting for me to see these two characters figure out what works best for them, because I know what that feels like. I know my situation is different than Rogue's because for her it's trauma-based and for me it wasn't, but still, it's interesting.

I really like that the story here is more than just "punch badguy till they stop" - it's also about the characters' childhood/adolescent traumas, and personal emotional growth. I'm all about that angst. Thoroughly enjoyed it for that. Gotta find me some more X-Men to read.

Rating: "meh…"

I absolutely adore Rogue. I have read most of her major story arcs, some of which included Gambit. They have had their fair share of interesting storylines. So I don't really understand why X-Men: Gambit & Rogue includes one of their most over-the-top one. Is this what they think fans of either Rogue or Gambit want to read? Well, not me. I would have even prefered re-reading one of their most iconic storylines rather than the ones that they picked.
Also I was hoping for something new that included this famous pair, so I was immediately just a tad underwhelmed.

Public library copy.

Both stories weren't that great, to me the standout things were the Lee weeks and Mike Wieringo art. Neither artist were at their potential yet, but very good nonetheless. Weeks drew like Jim Lee at this time and the best part of Gambit was when he was with Rogue, which all starts to devolve here. I can appreciate the book based on the 90s era from which it came, but it doesn't hold up that great.

I read this because fabulous podcast Jay and Miles Xplain the X-Men recommended it, and they were right. I now understand why Rogue/Gambit is such a popular pairing, and why their recent wedding was such a big deal. Lots of fun. It’s impossible to take the accents seriously, though. They’re just hilarious, although it probably doesn’t help that because of the podcast I hear both of them in Miles Stokes’ voice.

This wasn't what I really expected, or wanted, from a comic called Gambit & Rogue. I thought we'd get more about why they're such a popular couple. Still the stories that were in this were somewhat interesting, even though they didn't fulfill that romance itch.

I still like Gambit the best but these old comics wrapped in a new cover are cheesey and tedious.

A graphic novel of two 90s stories - one Gambit’s and one Rogue’s - tied together with the threads of their past lives and loves.

I liked the Rogue story much more (4/5). The Gambit story felt like it was dragging (2.75) - probably because I couldn’t care less if he saved Bella Donna - she was annoying in animated series and she proved just as annoying again in the Rogue story.

I enjoy the Rogue and Gambit interactions and flirtations but in the end this was less about their own love story and more about them reconciling their issues with their first loves. I was hoping for more progression for them as a couple.

Also, not a fan of the art style. I know some people love it for the 90s nostalgia, but it wasn’t doing it for me - especially in the Gambit comics. The Rogue ones jumped from horrible to okay. (This could be because I am spoiled by more modern comics with their really sharp art, but there are panels where rogue’s hair is coloured the same as her skin or there’s even words missing in bubbles… that’s a problem).

Overall, gets a 3.25/5 for the Rogue story being much more compelling and pulling together both in a cohesive story.

I've always enjoyed the flirtatious always wanting each other, can't touch each other thing that these two have. They're a sexy couple and I hate that they have haters trying to destroy them. A woman scorned...

Loved both mini-series, though overall the Gambit series was slightly stronger, but both were excellent. 🙂

Loved Lee Weeks's art in Gambit and the same for Mike Wieringo's in Rogue. The coloring in Gambit was especially strong. Has Howard Mackie written anymore X-Men comics? Especially Rogue and Gambit, because he got them both great. But yeah, loved the book.🙂👍

I've been on a little bit of an X-Men kick as of late, mainly due to rewatching the first couple of movies. It definitely helped to reawaken my love for Rogue, and so here we are!

I didn't know anything about Gambit before reading this and I've got to say that he was so much fun to read about. The relationship between Rogue and Gambit was cute to follow, and felt a bit forbidden due to Rogues powers, which I liked. It balanced out with the way the two of them constantly had a good flow of quips and comebacks for one another.

Some of the pages were a bit overwhelming with the amount of text blocks and information, but the inclusion of a narrator helped to straighten out any confusion on powers or who certain people were. It doesn't hold up super great though, mainly due to the obvious 90's X-Men outfits and the older style of artwork, but it was enjoyable to read an older comic and see the roots for Rogue.
