DNF. The heroine was so moody and b****y. I was unable to connect. It had a great premise, I was excited to read this, but the heroine’s negativity got on my nerves.
Life has been pulling me in a million directions lately, and I'll be honest—reading has definitely taken a backseat to everything else that's been happening. But when I was scrolling through my Kindle at the end of June, desperately searching for something to dive into, I stumbled across this gem I'd picked up way back in 2016. Sometimes the best discoveries are the ones that have been patiently waiting for you.
"Breaking Promises" hit me like a wave of pure nostalgia. Remember those dance movies that dominated the late 90s and early 2000s? Step Up, Save the Last Dance, Stomp the Yard—the whole glorious bunch that had us all secretly practicing moves in our bedrooms? This book brought every single one of those memories flooding back, and I was absolutely here for it.
S. Briones Lim introduces us to Aurora, a character who immediately grabbed my heart. After a devastating gymnastics accident that nearly broke her neck, she's starting fresh at a new university, desperately trying to escape the shadow of being "the girl who had a miracle"—someone who should be paralyzed or dead but somehow isn't. The weight of that identity, of having your entire life defined by one terrifying moment, felt incredibly real and raw.
What I loved most was watching Aurora discover breakdancing and the underground dance scene. Her friendship with Mitch, a B-Boy who becomes her unlikely mentor, develops beautifully as he teaches her the ropes, hoping his crew might accept a female dancer. Of course, things don't go as planned—when do they ever?—but Aurora's response is absolutely perfect. Instead of backing down, she forms her own crew of misfit women: dancers, cheerleaders, gymnasts, and yoga enthusiasts, all united by their determination to prove that women can dance just as well as (or better than) their arrogant male counterparts.
The book captures that same underdog spirit and fierce competition that made those early 2000s dance movies so addictive. There's something deeply satisfying about watching Aurora transform from someone afraid of her own body to someone who owns every move, every beat, every moment on the dance floor.
For any millennial who spent their teenage years obsessed with dance battles and the dream of proving yourself through movement, "Breaking Promises" is pure comfort food. It's a reminder of why we fell in love with those stories in the first place—the passion, the struggle, the triumph of finding your tribe and your voice through dance.
This book was exactly what I needed during a chaotic time, delivering both escapism and inspiration in equal measure.
Cute NA romance set to the backdrop of break dancing. This is a typical underdog battles to win story that will be familiar to any movie goer with a couple of the classics even being mentioned by the girls thesmselves as they prepare for battle. I have seen dozens of versions of this with a variety of themes (cheerleading, dance, ice skating) but it is familiar because we love to see the underdog battle to win and in this story the whole girl power element was an added enjoyment.
I’ve always been interested in things about breakdancing, the culture, the people, the dancing, it’s all pretty crazy and an exciting lifestyle. After movies like Step Up and any dance movie really you can’t help but wonder about that world. I’ve always loved hip hop so it goes hand in hand so when I saw there was a series that was written all about breakdancing and the people in it I couldn’t resist, I knew I had to read them all. S. Briones Lim did an amazing job bringing this culture to life in her books.
To start the series off we meet Aurora who is an ex gymnast, after a big fall she couldn’t help but move away to find something new to fill the void and fear she feels after her incident. She moves away to a new college to try and find herself and what she’s going to do with the rest of her life. She’s pretty bitter in the beginning of the book, but I think it’s that bitterness that made her such a fierce character. Especially after she has a run in with cocky Mitch Adachi, aka Kickwit.
Mitch isn’t the type of person to run away from a challenge and he knew that Aurora had something special, it was just breaking through to her layer by layer that made them such an interesting couple. They definitely felt as if they fed off each other in the best way possible. But still the competitor in both of them did get them in a slight bit of trouble, but still it was the good kind of trouble.
This first book really focused a lot on breakdancing and the life of a b-boy, the utter cockiness they have, but also the realness of the sport. It was really interesting to watch the characters grow and realize their worth. Also to get rid of their fears and move on with their lives, sometimes facing those fears are the hardest things, but once they are faced there is no better victory. I thoroughly enjoyed all the characters, the dance moves exhibited throughout the book and the friendships that were formed.
YO YO YOOOOOO !!!!
I LOVED this story so much. Ms. S. Briones Lim did an amazing job. This is my favorite book of her yet.
This book sounds so adorable especially if you are a college student. It teach us not to lose hope and never estimate the power of underdogs. I always cheered for underdogs if I watch any sports on TV. This book is beyond amazing especially the very last chapter.
I was cheering and at the same time hold my breath away. Aurora and Mitch love story is sweet. I am sure that some people can relate to their relationship. They are so cute together. I cannot wait to read the second book.
If you love break dance, gymnastics, yoga and girl power. This book is a must read. It teaches us not to give up hope an bring our best until the last end.
Disclosure:
I received an ARC of the book in exchange of my honest review.
"Received the ARC for an honest review" I loved this book! Aurora is starting over in a new place after a tragic accident. She only wants to focus on school and moving on with her life. Mitch is not part of the plan. When Aurora meets Mitch everything changes. I love Mitch and Aurora together. They both help each other overcome obstacles. Aurora shows everyone including Mitch that she can do anything the boys can do, and sometimes better! This is a must read!!
I really liked this story of women power. A girl loses her way transfers and find her new beginning. I like Mitch too and thought he was a good addition to the girl power for being supportive. I really liked how the author transforms the injury to the guy so that the characters can empathize with each other. Overall the writing showed the depth of the characters and the multi-dimensional facets of the story.
I've been searching for something different lately and this book delivered. I liked it for the most part, bits of it reminded me of Step Up movie, though. (Also any other dance movie you'd see plus Drum Line included.) I enjoyed the storyline, the characters and so forth. That being said, I'd read it again, I'd also recommend if if like me, you're in the mood for something different.
S. Briones Lim has done an amazing job of developing multi dimensional characters that the reader will feel invested in from the start. I love being about to picture everything about my characters and what they are doing. I watch dance shows and competition shows so I really felt like she brought that life through with her story and I was able to take what I've seen and use her words to picture exactly what she was describing.
While you have the main relationship and love story between Aurora and Mitch, Lim also explores all of the other relationships in their life. We have wonderful secondary characters and you will be ready to dive into their stories next.
I loved how smooth and quick of a read it was. There wasn't anything that was hard to follow and I found myself flipping through pages and finishing in no time at all.
