The concluding novel in a wildly original and hugely entertaining fantasy series from HBO scriptwriter Charlie Fletcher, for a generation that has grown up with Harry Potter and Neil Gaiman.

"Exciting, exhilaring, scary and moving in equal measure, The Oversight is a teeming world of dark deeds and dark magics, brilliantly realized." - M. R. Carey

The Oversight of London has been sworn for millennia to prevent the natural and the supernatural worlds from preying on each other.

Book 1: 3*
Book 2: 3.5*
Book 3: 3.5*

A decent ending to a decent series.

I'm somewhat tainted at the end because the series was getting better and better but the ending, in several different place, as it started to build into a crescendo instead fizzled out.

I'm not the biggest UF fan so others will probably enjoy this victorian setting which pits a coven of sorts called the Oversight against the demons of the dark and some greedy non-supernatural beings who would use power to their own ends. I liked the world, the magic, the characters and a lot of the story. I just think that ending could have been so much more dramatic.

I have thoroughly enjoyed reading this series this book was good but it left a few things unsaid at the end which am not happy about as this is the last book so what happened to Mr D? he went into the mirrors and his hand was severed and what happens to kat and her 2 companions yes they get out of the water after nearly drowning but nope nada we don't find out what happened to them grrrr . that being said it is a really good series I just hope there will be another book to fill in the blanks

Just brilliant. Such a rich, clever world with beauty and horror combined.

Loved this series, felt there were slightly too many characters and strands which it got bogged down in places (the American but specifically) but otherwise excellent combination of fantasy and Victorian melodrama.

Great Victorian fantasy trilogy. Fletcher is a fine writer. The world building is succinct and clever; I cared about the characters enough to suffer through quite a few heart-wrenching moments; the language is true to its setting and period.

That said, I do feel ambivalent about the ending. Most threads came around quite nicely, but several more were left vaguely unsatisfied. There really should be a fourth installment, and I hope he writes it.

When I started reading this book I didn't realize that it was the 3rd book in a trilogy. So, I stopped reading it and started the first book. I forced myself to finish the first book, but I can't say that I liked either one. The writing seemed very labored, and I just couldn't build a connection with any of the characters. Maybe he's just better as an author of children's books.

This review covers the entire Oversight trilogy. The story itself is riveting. Although I usually feel disappointed with series where the author ends each book in a cliff hanger, I kept reading because the characters and their situation was so engaging, and I wanted to find out what happened to them.

My perseverance was finally rewarded with a satisfactory ending that ties everything up.

A satisfying conclusion. Enough left hanging if the author chooses to continue a new trilogy.

A good ending to a good series. My only complaint was the pacing. The start of the book dragged, then the ending just hurried right on up. Overall, I'd recommend the series, but would also recommend patience and persistence with the unusual writing style.

This was an amazing end to this trilogy that left some stories open to possibly follow up with another set of books following some side characters into different adventures. The ending left me heartbroken yet excited for any new adventures.

Come potrà l’Oversight far fronte a tutti questi nemici?

Pierwszy tom Trylogii Nadzoru oczarował mnie klimatem i choć czegoś mi w nim brakowało, to jednak chciałam brnąć w tę historię dalej.

Jestem zawiedziona i rozczarowana.

Today's post is on The Remnant by Charlie Fletcher. It is the third in his Oversight trilogy. It is 414 pages long and is published by Orbit. The cover has a hand coming out of ice with a red ring and holding a flame. As it is the third in the trilogy you need to have read the first two novels. There is mild foul language, no sex, and mild violence in this book. The story is told from third person close of the characters moving from one scene to the next as the story goes. There Be Spoilers Ahead.

From the back of the book- The Oversight is most dangerous when most reduced. There are many dead and gone who did not remember that.
The Oversight of London has been sworn for millennia to prevent the natural and the supernatural worlds from preying on each other.
Now, at its lowest ebb, with its headquarters destroyed and its last members scattered far and wide, this secret society will battle for survival and face the harshest foe it has ever met: itself.

Review- An excellent end to a wonderful trilogy. Like the second book we pick up right the last left off, with Sara and Sharp returning to London and finding the Safe House destroyed. Things happen very quickly after that. The villains are moving and the Oversight has to decide what they are going to do and they decide to fight to the last man. There is a high body count in this volume on both sides and I teared up at the death of Hodge, the terrier man, who was one of my favorites but his death was a good one Fletcher did not waste his death. We do get answers about what the Wildfire is, about the Smith and the Sluagh, and about who the Citizen is. Fletcher has left himself room to write more if he so wishes and I would like to see more of this world and its people. Very satisfying read.

I give this book a Five out of Five stars. I get nothing for my review and I borrowed this book from my local library.

What a head rush! I finished this one nearly two weeks ago but couldn't sum up my feelings right away. First and most important, I am grieving the end of this trilogy. Do I expect to have more coming from this world -- yes, yes. There is a thread that needs to be weaved into another trilogy. But I won't get into that as I bask in the afterglow of what was simply amazing.

The third and final book sent me on a journey for answers to questions I didn't know I had. For example, I was frustrated trying to understand who and what 'The Smith' was but at some point, it made sense. By the time I was done, I had reshaped my definition of who is bad and who is very bad. Many shades of good too but the bad stayed with me longer. I needed the heroes to survive just so it would piss off the bad guys not because I thought they were deserving. This book somehow allowed for the distinction and for a reader's pettiness. I felt every character's fate was up for grabs so I was constantly rolling the die in my head.

The final chapters drove me mad with anticipation and blood-lust. Every time the plot moved toward disaster, the story would change direction in unexpected ways. Not as bad as Game of Thrones but it doesn't hurt to gird one's heart. There are some wonderful moments when the characters were in a good place. I enjoyed those moments very much since they were few and far between. Bottom line, this series is worth the emotional journey. Thanks Mr. Fletcher! Get busy on the next one please.

I picked up this book in paperback edition from Barnes and Noble because I wanted to see how everything ends, my personal review of the book is as follows:

I personally feel that that I would've felt more connected with the storyline and the emotional impacts of all of the different plot points ending if it could've been spilt up into one more book, I personally wish that some of world building would've been left out (given that this book is the end of the trilogy) to make room for a few more of the backstory of certain characters to be explained(I understand that a majority of them were and I might have missed the information on the character I was looking for) as well as more info on how certain characters made it out of certain situations at the end.

I still feel over all that the story arc of this book felt like the setting up a the end of the series and not the end. I have other thoughts on the ending and how it effects my personal thoughts on the series as a whole however I'm going to leave them out off the review for spoiler reasons. Overall I personally rate this book a 4 out of 10 because of how much I liked the characters.

Great end to an excellent series. I've loved all of them.

Fletcher could easily have extended this series to run to four or five books. The landscape if both very original and very rich with a wonderful array of characters (good, flawed and truly malevolent), but...three cheers for an author who resists the temptation (at least I hope he does) to keep milking this world setting and actually conclude the series at three books. And he really does reach a conclusion...tying in pretty well all of the multitude of characters he introduces over the series. He's probably left open just enough avenues for a second series, but I would strongly urge him to resist the temptation.

For those of a more bloodthirsty nature, there are some original and very satisfying demises! And some unfortunate and sad ones too. But no plot spoilers here!

These three books are definitely going onto my re-readable shelf. And I think they will age well, so my children will hopefully enjoy them too in due course.

Honestly, I could not have asked for a more engaging ending to this fantastic trilogy. I know some people have been frustrated that there is one plot thread that goes unresolved - but in the epilogue/afterword, there are indications that this may become a spin-off, so to me that's good news rather than cause for irritation. As for the main story lines, wow - there were so many balls in the air during this story, as pieces were introduced and tied together and interwoven... I kept wondering how it would be possible to resolve them all in the last 100 pages - yet Fletcher not only managed to do so, he did so handily and with aplomb. I found the resolutions clever and plausible - even when they were brief and otherwise tidier than I expected. This is not a series to be missed - and I truly hope there's more to come from the Oversight's world!

We get to see a bit of how this all works in the very new United States, before things turn ugly. Which is much how things remain in London. The Oversight’s enemies appear to be closing in, but their enemies have enemies… This does mostly wrap up, it there are still mysteries left unexplained- there is much we don’t know about who/what The Smith is or what he started out as. Lucy believes something that isn’t true and we don’t know if she will discover the truth or find the stolen child. There is easily enough for another book but it doesn’t look as if there will be one as this was published in 2014. I will have to live with my frustration of not knowing it all.

Highly enjoyable conclusion to a great series. Fletcher's writing is very fine indeed, as is his world building and plotting. The story is inventive and painfully well described. The one thing that keeps this series from being over the top amazing is that, even with the fine writing, etc., I didn't find myself really getting immersed in the story or caring about our embattled band of heroes. There was just some indefinable quality missing which kept from committing altogether. So just three stars for me.

This trilogy was intense to say the least! You will need to read the first two to understand what is going on in this last one. Those damn mirrors! There were times I thought was NOT going to like how this ended, and although there were a couple of sad moments, for the most part I was very satisfied. And, while most of the story was resolved, he could still do another book of some of the characters' situations which were kind of left hanging. However, I wouldn't mind another book with all his unique and remarkable characters.

I really liked this series because it was a unique, steam punk, sci fi read but it just seems like ending kind of fizzled out. There are major characters and storylines that just end and aren't explained. We simply don't know what happens to them. In the same sense new charcters are introduced but not developed so they just feel unnecessary. The book wasn't bad, I still enjoyed it, just feels a bit disappointing and lackluster.

The bickering between the characters really became tiresome. It was also overdone in the first two novels too. The whole storyline of the American branch of the Oversight for which the book is named is almost irrelevant. There was closure to the different plots, but it's almost as if the author just decided to bring the whole thing to an end. I gave the first two books 4* but they're really maybe 3.5* Only bought this on Kindle because this was not in our library system.

Phew! What an amazing 3rd story! I'm really, really hoping the author does a 4th story, as there are enough loose ends left for a follow-up, even if it's a spinoff story.
The threads of all three novels are spectacularly woven together in a humdinger of a story, and I found it very difficult time putting the book down. Mr Fletcher is a very talented writer indeed

I’m torn between 3 and 4 stars. Better than the previous two I think, though still a bit heavy on the doomsaying. There are a lot of characters to keep track of in fairly fragmented sub-stories, but they wove together better in this book than previously. Some great characters that I wanted to find out about so I’m glad I finished the trilogy, though I had put off finishing the last book.

I really enjoyed the first 90% of this book, thinking it the best of the Oversight novels so far. Then it rather fell to bits at the end with too many inconsistencies, non-sequiturs and limp ends. Still 3 stars as I'll buy any sequels.

Looking forward big time to the new trilogies this saga will offer! Wonder if it will be brought forward say 75 years towards a different Last Hand, and equally so with a 3rd trilogy! Be cool I reckon!

This is a great trilogy for fantasy readers - set in a Victorian type era with folklore and pagan characters with supernatural powers - best to read the three books one after the other. Hope there are more from this author from this world.

Awesome triology

I was so sorry to read the last words of this trilogy. So invested in the characters. I’m almost made at Charlie Fletcher for not writing another and definitely disappointed. I loved it. Absolutely loved this series.
