Captain Perseverance, ordinary kid turned superhero, discovers the superpower that turns the dread of struggle into the joy of success. Learning to read, long division, science fair, band—“I break the chains, I fly sky high, there’s nothing I can’t do!” With high-energy illustrations and text that sings from the page, Captain Perseverance inspires young readers to discover the power of grit.
Brod Bagert is the award-winning author of 21 books of poetry for children, young-adults, and adults. His work has received numerous awards including the International Reading Association’s prestigious Young Adults Choices award, the Association of Educational Publishers Distinguished Achievement Award, the Independent Publisher Gold Book Award, and Mom’s Choices Gold Medal. He tours some thirty weeks a year, and has visited Asia, Europe, South America, Africa and just about every nook and cranny of the good ole USA.
Born and raised in the City of New Orleans, Brod studied the classics in Latin and Greek, wrestled and boxed to vent adolescent angst, fell in love with and married his high-school sweetheart, practiced law, served in public office, and reared four children that are the joy of his life.
Brod started his career as a poet in the third grade with a poem for his mother. He wrote a few poems in high school, then picked up the pace in college because “GIRLS LOVE POETRY!” During his lawyer days, Brod wrote fewer and fewer poems. Then one of his children asked him to write a poem for her to perform in her school elocution program. That launched a flood of poems unabated to this very day. In 1992, Brod closed his twenty-one year law practice and became one of America’s very few full-time, professional poets.
Today Brod mesmerizes audiences with poetry, both his and those of the great authors of history, leaving participants with a new or reinvigorated love for poetry in the process.
Brod continues to live in New Orleans with Debby, his wife of more than 40 years, where they spend quality time with their four children, and a growing tribe of grandchildren.
'Captain Perseverance: How I Became a Superhero' by Brod Bagert with illustrations by Cam Aitkenhead will teach you everything you need to be a superhero. I really liked this book.
We learn that this superhero started out just like us. He struggled with reading and math and science and music. He conquered all those things and more. He tells us his secret, but I won't spoil what it is, although you can gather what it is from his name.
This book was lots of fun to read and had a really positive message. I loved the illustrations, full of color and action. I loved the text with a rhyming meter that is perfect. I've read a lot of non-flowing rhyming kids books, so this one gets extra marks for actually succeeding. The message is perfect. You can do just about anything you want as long as you persevere. It's not easy. It's often not fun. But it's an important lesson.
I received a review copy of this ebook from Juliahouse Publishing and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this ebook.
I am so happy that the publisher sent a print galley when the digital didn’t work, or I might have missed out on this fun new take on Superheroes. We constantly try to give the same message to kids over and over, and over again. But finding new ways, or angles often grabs someone better than the tried and true standard. Instead of saying “If at first you don’t succeed, try, try, again” you can say, I persevered and I conquered. Yes, I spun in the middle, and it may have taken me time to learn, but in the end I DID IT!
Why I like this book: vocabulary building. I have yet to see Perseverance used in a picture book. Two, the fun and colorful illustrations. I personally like the mad scientist. Finally the rhyming structure. Some can not successfully pull off a rhyming structure, but this story preserved and came out with flying colors.
An AMAZING book with an AMAZING lesson written by an AMAZING author. It's a must read for all teachers to include in their classroom at some point during the school year.
“Captain Perseverance” by Brod Bagert is a poetic tale about becoming a superhero through… perseverance. It is written through the eyes of a young teen going through the pitfalls of life…like band tryouts and long division… only to become the superhero Captain Perseverance. This book is encouraging and uplifting. It tells our children that when life is tough, you need to keep trying your best. What better lesson can we teach our youth than to work through your tough times and not give up? The colorful illustrations add to the interest and excitement of the story and they help make the tale relevant to today’s youth. I plan to read this to my students the first day of school. I’m sure it will encourage them to “keep on keeping on” throughout the whole year.
I love Brod Bagert's books! I ordered this one as soon as I heard about it. As an elementary school librarian, I look for books that are entertaining to all ages and books that teach a lesson are a huge plus. This one hit both marks. The book arrived right before state testing and my older students (3rd-5th) really enjoyed it. I also read it aloud at a summer reading event where kids and adults both loved it. The message was great, the illustrations were detailed and interesting, the rhythm made it easy to read aloud, and the book leads to some great discussions. Job well done, Brod!
I'm a bit torn on this one. I think the message of this book is very important, and the way it is presented is very bright and colorful, mainly that you have to keep trying, have perseverance, to achieve anything great in life (or in school). And heaven knows this is true, but, not sure if it will sink into kids that that really is the answer.
However, four starts for at least making it fun to get there. Better than a lecture from your mother on how you have to practice to learn to do anything anything well.
Thanks to Netgalley for making this book available for an honest review.
I received a free ecopy of this book for an honest review.
Captain Perseverance is an inspirational book for children. Captain Perseverance couldn’t read until he practiced, couldn’t do math until he persevered, etc.
Not only does Captain Perseverance have a great message but it has illustrations of the superhero Captain Perseverance. It’s non-stop action even though it’s about the importance of perseverance.
This is a great book for children or, even better, for parents to read aloud to children.
Another great book by Brod Bagert. This "Super Librarian" is always looking for great books that illustrate leadership skills. All kids love Superhero books, and this book by Bagert does not disappoint. It teaches them that is OK to fail, it's OK to struggle, just don't give up, PERSERVERE! I will definitely use it as I teach the 7 habits, as I work at a Leader In Me School. A must have for any school library. Looking forward to more books like this from Brod Bagert!!
Another home run for Brod! As a fan of Brod's poetry, this book does not disappoint. Written about a topic many children are interested in (superheros), Captain Perseverance teaches values that will last a lifetime. I love the vocabulary lessons that can be tide into the book. I know children of all ages will love this book and can't wait to share it with my students in a few weeks.
Brod Bagert has written yet another great book. The content and vibrant illustrations will appeal to many levels.. It would be a great addition to character trait conversations both in the classroom and at home.
I love the concept of instilling confidence into young students. My first grader loved it and the illustrations were engaging and thoughtful. As a bookworm, parent and teacher, I love the values of grit and tenacity. It really hit home with my kids.
Usually I think books with a strong message are cheesy and don’t accomplish what they set out to do as a result. Captain Perseverance is an exception! It had delightful rhymes and bright pictures. I would definitely read it during story time.
Got this free for a review. Great art. Good message. It just felt a little lacking in the story department. Don't get me wrong, I totally agreed with the message, but no one likes being preached to. I think a fun story would've gotten the message across more effectively.
Brod does it again, a superhero character with a quick message to kids about perseverance. A great read aloud for classrooms and even guidance counselors
