Be careful what you wish for, you just might get it. Well I wished for a wonderful, romantic-suspense lite with humor, romance and a touch of mystery, and I got exactly that. Elle James has got it all and a voodoo oh-no in Deja Voodoo. This is #3 in the series and I will need to find the other if they are anything like this one. I absolutely love it.

Alex Boyette comes from a family with 19 kids, she is a successful business owner and lonely. She would love to have a special someone to share life with, but her free time is limited and she just can't seem to find the right someone. She wishes for a man just like her dog Sport - loving, loyal, faithful. Well, be careful what you wish for. The next morning she finds herself waking up with Sport, the man, in her bed!

Ed Marceau is undercover in Bayou Miste, LA as part of a protection detail for a witness in the upcoming trial of a mob boss. Getting involved with someone is not on his list of things to do right now, but, some things have a way of happening anyway. Ed runs smack into a naked Sport with Alex and her friend, Calliope hot on his trail. Ed is gobbstruck by Alex and so is she. But, Alex has a Sport problem to take care of and Ed has a witness to protect from a mob hit. Alex's mom is in full matchmaker mode when she invites both Ed and Alex to dinner.

****ARC provided by Romance Beckons via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.****

I really enjoyed this book and I didn't feel like I needed to read the first two books to understand this book. I really like this book about Alex (girl) and Ed. Though I don't really like the name Ed. If anything I would prefer Eddie (you know, like Eddie Chavez from KA's Rock Chick Rescue). Once I got over the names - with Alex that sounds like a boy's name and Ed a name I didn't like and had to try to replace with something like Easton or Ethan - I thought the story was great.

The story was rather imaginative with the switching of Alex's dog into a hunky man whom her best friend ends up falling for. Alex is one of eighteen children and she happens to be the oldest and her mother keeps trying to fix her up and get her married. Alex rather reluctantly falls for Ed who is in town undercover to protect someone. There were many parts that were a bit funny and makes me want to read the first two books, but there were some parts that I did have to re-read because it was a bit confusing.

This book takes place in one of my favorite places in the world. Louisiana.

This book was a very enjoyable read. It was relaxing, easy to understand and enjoyable.

The story moved along at a very good pace, from beginning to end and I was upset when it ended as I needed more Cajun magic.

Elle James has created a unique world with interesting characters that you want to see succeed.

I look forward to more Cajun magic from Elle James hopefully sometime soon.

Last of the series?

This is a great series with loads of laughs and silliness, also heart breaks and tears. Is there such a thing as magic? Maybe there is, it is just a person perspective and what they choose to believe.

I was struggling to figure out just how I was going to review this book when I came across this passage from the book:
Being in love with a man who turned back into a dog was a much bigger hurdle to overcome than being in love with a man who lived in a different city.

I kid you not. That is an actual passage from this book, and in those words you can see exactly what you can expect from this story. This is not a bad book. It isn't a struggle to read it. But ... I think you have to be in a certain frame of mind to enjoy it, and I just was not there. Others might not have this problem, but I never could enjoy the quirkiness of it. And if you cannot appreciate the quirkiness of the story line, you will not enjoy this book in the way it is meant to be enjoyed.

Deja Voodoo is the third in the Cajun Magic series by Elle James. I didn't read the first two books, so there is some obvious back story that is referred to, especially at the beginning of the novel, but it is not necessary to know that story in order to understand what is going on. It takes place deep in the heart of Cajun country in Louisiana and centers around Alex, oldest daughter of the Boyette clan, a family with nineteen children. Alex is a business owner and doing wonderfully on her own, but her mother feels like she needs a man in her life. That man arrives in the person of Ed Marceau, an undercover police officer who works with Alex's brother Ben, hero of the first book in this series. Ed is assigned to protect a witness in a high profile case, and Ben and he decide to hide this woman in the marsh land of Ben's home town. That puts Ed into contact with Alex, even though she doesn't know Ed's true reason for being in town. What follows is a little tiny bit of mystery, a lot of strange situations, and an eventual love story.

How does the man turning back into a dog figure into the story? Well, I'll leave that a mystery. It is meant to be a giant symbol of just how wacky the Cajun voodoo life can be, and I know I was supposed to be finding things a lot funnier than I was as I read. Instead of laughing at the joke, however, I just kept saying to myself, "I can't believe I am actually reading this." Like I say, I was just not in the right frame of mind to appreciate it. I think that there may be others who can really enjoy this bizarre situation. It just wasn't me.

Taking out all of the quirkiness of the plot, how was the actual story and romance? I actually liked both of the main characters. I wish their characters had been developed more fully, but overall they were good leads for this story. The side characters fell into the quirky side of the story, and I already explained how I wasn't in the right mood to appreciate them like they could be appreciated. My main problem with this story is one that I have in many romance novels. I prefer to have lots and lots of build up to the relationship. I want to be there as these characters get to know one another and gradually fall in love. I want to be able to see the reason why they love each other. In this story it happens way too fast. They spend very little time actually getting to know each other at all. There is one scene that shows them seeing a deeper side to each other, but other than that it is mostly focused on their physical attraction to one another. I need more. Lots more. An awesome body and excellent bedroom skills does not make a great relationship, and I can't get very excited about book relationships that seem to only be based on the physical/chemical chemistry between characters. There wasn't enough conversation or non-bedroom activities between this couple to justify the giant declaration of love that comes super soon in this book. Because of that I felt as if everything in the plot was flying by way too fast, not taking proper time to develop at all. Ultimately it was the speed of the story without any depth or development that kept me from rating this higher.

I hate to rate books with two stars. I really do. But this book failed to touch me at all. Like I say, it is not a badly written book, so it may not totally be the fault of the author. It may have more to do with my personal preferences as far as romance goes. If you are one who likes to read quirky romance stories with a good amount of steam and a little danger and intrigue, you might enjoy this story. If you are interested, I would suggest that you read To Kiss a Frog and Voodoo for Two first so you can familiarize yourself with this world of voodoo where this series takes place. At least for me I can only say that this book was okay. Two stars.

Alex is frustrated with her mother's attempts to play matchmaker for her oldest daughter. Why can't she understand her life is full enough as it is. She has her
fitness center, her family to take care of (she has 15 younger brothers and sisters still at living at home with her mother and two off at college), Sport her Golden Retriever to take care of her and good friends and neighbors. All right so one of her friends has just married and moved away from Miste Bayou, but she has her other best friend, Calliope is still here, maybe her love life has fallen into a black hole and she can't seem to get Theo, an I drank too much mistake, but she is happy with her life, right? Feeling a bit lonely she goes to sleep with her devoted Sport curled up next to her bed thinking if only he were a man she would have the perfect male. Awakening the next morning she finds an unknown naked man in her bed, a drop dead gorgeous naked man, but still a stranger. Chasing him from her home. The she realizes Sport is missing and how the man acted and is comes to her that the man was spot. She and Calliope go hunting for Sport and bring him back. Alex knows she cannot get out of dinner with her family she decides to bring Sport along so her mother will thing he is the man in her life and layoff parading prospective son-in-laws in front of her. Unfortunately her mother finally got something right because Ed is just about perfect. Fate must be laughing at her.

Ed is in Bayou Miste undercover to protect a witness with a hit out on her until she can testify. How can he do his job when all he can do is think of is the beautiful Alex, his landlady's daughter and the sister of his co-worker and friend. Why is she running hot and cold? What is between her and that Sport any way? After attempts on his life start he knows that being around Alex is bring danger to her door. If the hit men don't kill him then Ben, her brother just might, but Ed is just about convinced it might be worth it.

I love this series. I was ecstatic when Déjà Voodoo came out so that I could return to Miste Bayou and visit with Joe Thibodeaux, Mo, Alex and her lively family and Calliope. The characters will quickly become friends you want to visit with over and over. The descriptive writing will have you smelling the scents of the Bayou and Mrs. Boyette's
Red Beans and Rice. I hope Calliope's story is soon. I found her a lot smarter than she lets on when it comes to the matters of the heart and life in general. You will laugh and become a little misty eyed with Déjà Voodoo, but you will never want it to end once you start reading. If you have not read any of the other books don't worry all the books in the series can be read as standalones. That doesn't mean you won't be getting the first two to read as soon as possible. A wonderful series I was lucky to find.

Deja Voodoo (Cajun Magic #3) by Elle James
* I received a copy of this book from Entangled Publishing in exchange for an honest review*

Alex has everything in life she wants, her own home, a business that she loves and plenty of friends and family. Now that her brother Ben has moved to New Orleans it’s up to her to help her mom take care of her brothers and sisters. Her life is full and she doesn’t have time for romance but Ed makes her start to realize that there is something missing in her life. Her mother’s matchmaking doesn’t help either.

Ed is not happy about being stuck in Bayou Miste but it’s the safest place to hide their star witness. He is staying in the Boyette’s rental cottage and finds himself firmly in the middle of the Boyette family. There is something about Ben’s family that draws Ed in, especially Alex. He can’t seem to stop thinking about Alex ever since he saw her running through town in her nightie. Has this confirmed bachelor met his match and will he still have a chance with her once his secret comes out?

Alex is such a strong female, she has been helping her mom take care of all her brothers and sisters since their dad passed away and she feels like she has to be there. She takes them fishing and teaches them self-defense to help her mother out. Even though she loves dinners with her family, she will do anything in her power to get out of them because her mom is constantly trying to fix her up. Ed is the newest candidate and he starting to make her question her life.

Everything in Alex’s life gets turned upside down starting with a voodoo spell that turns her dog into a man. Her friend Lucie, has her best interest at heart but they never anticipated Calliope getting hurt in the process. Sport is enjoying being a man and learning new things but he can’t shake some of his dog like behaviors. Calliope has always adored Alex’s dog Sport and now that he’s a man, she can’t help falling in love with him. In the end, their love for Alex outweighs everything else.

Ed is sexy and a real man. He believes he will be a bachelor for the rest of his life because he’s married to his job, but Alex makes him question his future. His protective instincts kick in around Alex and the more he’s around her, the more he starts to fall for her. He hopes that what is building between them won’t be ruined when she finds out the truth about him.

I think these two are so good together. They fill a need in each other that neither knew they had. They both believe they are content with their lives and have everything they could possibly need. Neither realizes that they are lacking human contact and love until they find each other. Their chemistry is evident from the beginning and they steam the pages up when they finally hook up.

They story is full of interesting characters that add depth to the story and help set the scenes. There is just enough history about the town and its inhabitants without overpowering the main story while adding to the atmosphere. It was nice to see Ben and Lucie back and I love Lucie’s grandmother, she is awesome. I also loved the intrigue that went along with the story, it was just enough not to detract from Ed and Alex’s story.

Overall I really enjoyed the last installment in the Cajun magic series but I wish Calliope would’ve had some closure too. I give Deja Voodoo 4 Flaming Hearts.

A little magic goes a long way… Alexandra Belle Boyette is closing in on the big 3-0 and her mama has made it her mission to marry her off. In the tiny parish of Bayou Miste, deep in the Louisiana swamps, finding suitable hubby material can be a challenge—and Alex would rather not rely on magical spells to do the trick. But there is a sexy new man in town who might fit the bill... Ed Marceaux is in Bayou Miste to safeguard a key witness to a Louisiana Mafia murder. He must keep an eye out for suspicious characters—but the place seems to be full of them! What could be stranger than a woman dressed in a sexy nightgown chasing a naked man down the street? The enchantingly gorgeous Alex Boyette certainly makes it worth his while to find out… Add a Voodoo spell gone wrong, and voila! madness—and love—ensues.

Review:

This was a fun, sexy, supernatural read. I really enjoyed the using of Voodoo and it going wrong, reminded me of Fantasy Lover by Sherrilyn Kenyon. This is the 3rd book in the series, but honestly I don't think I missed anything by reading this one first; all references were pretty easy to follow. I do have to say I want to really go back and read the 2nd book, it sounds really funny.

All I can say is that if you Ever hear me say that I want 19 children...just slap me upside the head...lol Alexandra Belle is part of a BIG family, that is close and loving. I have got to tell you the names of her siblings because it just made me laugh: Ben (though in this book you don't get the full name), Alexandra Belle, Harry, Truman, Amelia, Abraham, George Washington, Dolley, Madison, John Kennedy, Thomas, Edison, Paul Revere, Susan B., Woodrow, Eleanor, Teddy, Roosevelt and Molly B.

Being the oldest girl Alex is like a second Mom to her siblings, and after her fathers death she feels like she needs to more or less put her life on hold for her family. Now Ed has commitment issues. He is divorced from his wife who felt he spent too much time with his job. Also, he was orphaned as a small child, so that adds to his issues. So, they both have issues but they are excellent together.

When the two meet is probably one of the funniest first meetings ever..Alex's friend and sister-in-law tries to help Alex by doing some voodoo for her love life, well that backfires and changes her dog, Sport into a man. So, Alex, in a short nightie and her friend Calliope are chasing a now naked human Sport down the street. The first morning Ed is there is out for his morning run and finds the other three running down the street.

This truly is a fun read with everything you could want in it: love, drama, fun, voodoo, action and mystery. Great story to read at the beach or by the pool. Putting in my two cents for the next book...it has to be for Calliope.

Reading the synopsis of this title I knew I was in for something quirky and different than most of the other PNR’s I generally read. It definitely proved true. Deja Voodoo being the third installment in her Cajun Magic series it provided sufficient enough back-story to connect the books, but not too much that it hindered the reading of Alex and Ed’s story.

Alex grew up in a large family of nineteen kids. Being one of the eldest she helped raise her younger siblings while work to carve a life of her own. Owning a gym and working double-time to prove to her overly concerned Mother that she did not have to have a steady man in her life to be happy took up most of her time. After receiving an interesting gift from her concerned friend she absent mindedly makes a wish only to see it come to fruition the following morning. Call this the proverbial wrench thrown into the works of her well constructed life as her world takes a sharp right into wacky-town.

Ed is on assignment keeping an eye on a witness for a high profile case. Not typically his choice to hang out posing as a fisherman in Bayou Miste, but his partner asked for his help and he had no great excuse for getting out of it. At the time he believed his partner was trying to make it a bit easier on him getting his Mother to rent out a cabin for him, but after being confronted with two sets of twins in a family of nineteen, and request to come to dinner where there was hardly a chance of refusal, and struggling to figure out how to appear as if he’d ever fished in his life as well as enjoyed the activity, he quickly found himself in over his head.

The initial meeting between Alex and Ed was hilarious and there were many other moments in this story that caused me to hold my sides and breathe through a giggle-fit. The romance was sufficiently steamy as well as the characters giving off the feeling of a great match. Ed’s job brought some action to this story and quicken the reading pace a bit. The supporting characters helped to round out the story to make this one a complete package.

In summary I found this title to be a light and quick read. The quirky aspect of the voodoo magic and small town setting worked to give you a little different flavor to the PNR dish. I would have liked to see a little more fleshing out of Alex and Ed’s characters. Don’t get me wrong I liked them, just wasn’t able to connect with them as easily as I’d like to have. Also there were some moments in this story that just kind of left me confused and slightly creeped out. To put these moments in the review would cause some spoilers so I’ll just say that when you come across them I’m sure you’ll be able to know what ones I’m referring to. In general this was a fairly fun read and if slightly oddball PNR is your thing then I believe you will enjoy this title.

Deja Voodoo is the third book in Elle James's Cajun Magic series and was just as much fun to read as the previous books. These stories don't need to be read in order as they all feature a different main couple but you will find familiar characters re-appearing throughout the series and in this case our heroine Alex is the sister of Ben, the hero from Voodoo for Two. This is a really light hearted series full of hunky Cajun heroes and just a hint of magic but I think the thing I enjoy most about it is the Bayou setting.

As the oldest girl in the Boyette clan Alex has spent years taking care of her younger siblings so the last thing she wants is to get married and start having children of her own. She's happy to put her energy into her business and wants to live her own life for a change but her mother has other ideas and is constantly trying to set her up with eligible bachelors. Ed is a colleague of her brother Ben and he is in the Bayou to protect a witness for a murder trial. He has a job to do and isn't looking for any entanglements but everything about Alex gets his blood pumping and she isn't easy to stay away from. Throw in a magic spell gone awry and things are about to get interesting.

I love the Boyette family, they are such a huge family and although they have their arguments just like anyone else they're really close knit and protective of each other. As one of the oldest Alex is like a second mother to the younger ones and they all rely on her for advice and assistance. She's never really had the chance to go off and do her own thing but she doesn't resent that, she loves her family and would do anything for them but she's now ready to spread her wings and start to live a little. Ed is a great guy, he is protective and caring but he has a playful side that Alex brings out in him and they fit together really well. It doesn't help that Ed isn't able to come clean with Alex about why he is in town though, he is in disguise as a tourist so that people can't track down his witness and that isn't easy for him but they have something special and he is willing to work for it. I enjoyed the romance between these two, they were very sweet together.

There is a good amount of action to add some tension to the story and I have to tell you how much I loved the side story with Alex's dog Spot - I can't say more without giving spoilers but it was hilarious! Deja Voodoo was a nice addition to the series, I'm not sure if Elle James has more stories planned but if she does they'll definitely be on my wish list.

Alexandra thinks her life is moving pretty smoothly but her momma wants her to get marry and settle down. That is not what Alex wants. She has a good business and helps take care of her brothers and sisters. Ed is in the Louisiana bayou to help keep a witness safe. He has to blend in with the locals and keep an eye out for trouble. This is an ordinary bayou. A voodoo queen likes to help the locals with their problems and is training her replacement. Magic can sometimes go a little crazy and spells don't turn out how you want. Alex gets an unwelcome present from the voodoo queen that turns her world a little crazy. Ed just happens to meet her as the craziness starts. Ed is the last thing Alex needs in her life but she can't stay away from him. Ed has a dangerous job to do and doesn't want to get anyone hurt. They try to fight what they feel for each other but they have more worries than that. Danger is coming to town and they are right in the middle of it.

Ed is a great guy even if sometimes he doesn't think it. He works hard and tries to protect the innocent even when they get on his nerves. He has never really had a family do Alex's large one is a new thing to him. I loved seeing him with all the kids. Alex is very protective and caring for her family. She has helped her mom for years and is really there for them. She is strong and and works hard to stay in shape and keep her business going. She doesn't like to get to close because she is afraid she will get hurt. Seeing her open up to Ed is great. Even in danger she tries to keep a clear head. I will say I love Sport in this book. He is awesome!

I really liked this book. While it has danger in it it still seems like a light read and one that is easy to get into. I have not read the first book in the series but was not one bit confused. You can read this just fine by itself. I love the magic in this book and the mayhem it causes. There is several funny scenes including when Ed meets Alex that will have you laughing. At times I did get sad reading it just because I'm a sucker for Sport. I like all of Alex family and the names are just awesome. There is action involved as hit men are after a witness hiding out that keeps your attention you don't know what is going to happen. If you enjoy a magical book that is a great read pick this one up. I love the chemistry between Alex and Ed and like reading their story.

So, short of me thinking this was not very suspenseful for a book labeled as such…I really liked it! I think this is my first Elle James book and I will definitely be back for more in the future. I found Deja Voodoo to be well wrote, the characters likable and the story line interesting and quirky.

Ed has a job to do. Go undercover in the small parish of Bayou Mist and find out if anyone else has been snooping around the area where his federal witness has been stashed. Easily done until a woman in lingerie chasing after a naked man in the middle of the street catches his attention. The more he gets to know the family he’s staying with and the small town he’s inhabiting, the stranger things get.

This was a cute, often funny read that kept me compelled to continue. I mean well intentioned voodoo that turns a lovable golden retriever into a super cute man? What can go wrong with that scenario? :) And the dog wasn’t even the main story line, even though he plays an integral part, especially in the end. Deja Voodoo is a mostly light-hearted read that I found to be well wrote and engaging.

Alex and Ed, though slow to warm up made a good couple, each feeding off the others personality. I wished there would have been more heat between them but the relationship evolved well enough that I liked them together. Alex is a fun loving woman, with a crazy family who she tries desperately to keep together. She feels this solely rests on her since her fathers passing several years prior. With what amounts to a litter of children instead of a mere “family”, she has her work cut out for her. She uses her family as an excuse to not live her own life, something she finds is hard to do once Ed enters the picture.

I also thought that Ed’s story line of being in the town undercover could have been more central. This is listed as suspense but up until the end I didn’t really feel any of that. Alex felt as if someone was watching her a few times, but other then that the suspense stayed to a bare minimum. I much prefer my suspense to be sprinkled throughout a book and not all at once like in this one.

Elle James has intrigued me enough to come back for more which I hope has Alex’s friend finding a man….who didn’t start out life as a dog….I love books that make me laugh, and Deja Voodoo did that often. You have to be in the frame of mind to enjoy the kooky aspects and need a laugh or this one won’t work for you.

I give Deja Voodoo by Elle James 3.50 stars!

Review will post on my blog on the 24-June. Posting now here to goodreads.

This was a thrilling read! Hot, steamy romance, great action, and characters who really leap off the page with their personalities. I have to admit, I fell in love with the Boyette clan. Their names, their personalities, their adoration and love for one another.

Alex is an independent woman who adores and loves her family and owns a gym. She helps her mother out with her siblings, is a steadfast friend, but despite her protestations, she's a little lonely. Enter her matchmaking mother and the hunky Ed Marceaux, her mother's new vacation cabin renter. Their first meeting is quite something and had me giggling as I imagined it: a hot, well-built man running butt-naked down the street chased by two women, one in a see through nighty and black lace panties... lol

I've never been to Louisiana, but from reading other novels, watching television and movies (I'm sure exaggerated, but still that's my exposure to it!), and from the author's descriptions, I felt like I was a part of the book. Nicely detailed movement within the book (through the town, the swamp, etc). Hell, I would love a little bit of this voodoo in my life. Lucie and her grams can come up with a little voodoo bag for me any time!

As the story unfolds, Alex and Ed are each fighting their attraction towards one another, extreme lust and chemistry turning into something more. But Alex wants to stay in Bayou Miste to help her mother and keep her business, and Ed's from Baton Rouge over 2 hours away. Plus, he's being a bit weird and shady at times...what is he keeping from her? Well, we the readers know that it's because he's undercover, but Alex doesn't.

I love romance books where you have two strong characters with chemistry who fall in lust and then in love with one another. I love thrillers and magic, too. This book has it all and was a very satisfying read. This was the first book I've read by Elle James and I must say that I'm looking forward to more!

Thank you to Entangled Publishing for the advanced readers e-copy! :)

This book releases today, Monday, June 24, 2013, readers! Perfect summer read if I do say so myself: sizzling, suspenseful, action-packed romance!

I couldn't stop laughing in places and didn't want to put this one down.

This is book 3 in the Cajun Magic Mystery series but it can also be read as a stand-alone. I was enchanted by the first book in this series, I liked the second one and this one had me laughing out loud in places (just like the first book).

Alex doesn't have time for a relationship. She has her own business to run and 18 brothers and sisters that keep her busy. Since her father passed away she tries to help her mother as much as she can. Her friend wants her to find the same kind of happiness that she found with Alex's brother, Ben, so she has her grandmother (a famous Voodoo Priestess) help her concoct a charm to find a man. Things go pretty wrong when Alex, unkowing what the Voodoo charm is for, says to her dog, "Oh, Sport, I wish you were a man." It was soon after this that I started laughing so much I could hardly keep reading.

After voicing her wish Alex falls asleep. The next thing she knows is that she wakes up next to a strange man who licks her on the face. OK, I know I'm not making it sound so funny here but, trust me, you will laugh when you read this for yourself. It's not as easy as you might think for a dog-turned-man to behave correctly.

Our hero, Ed, works with Alex's brother and he's in Bayou Miste to help keep a key witness safe. No one can know what Ed really does or why he is "vacationing" in Bayou Miste. Ed is renting a small house from Alex's mom and her mother has set her sights on setting up Ed with Alex. Ed, however, wants no part of a relationship. His ex-wife divorced him because of his job and he's decided that he's not relationship material.

I think this book is a perfect blend of comedy, sexy time, and mystery. Someone is out to get Ed's witness and he finds that he not only needs to protect the witness but also Alex and her family.

If you've never read romantic comedy before, but you like other books by Elle James, you really need to give this one a try. All three books in the series are great but I think this one is now my favorite.

“Deja Voodoo” is a romance intertwined with voodoo mystery and crime set in Bayou Miste, a fictive city in Louisiana and therefore the Cajun swamps. Twisted Page Inc re-published this book in March 2016, the first edition was in June 2014.
Alexandra Belle Boyette, short Alex, works in her own fitness studio and has a small house of her own. Plus 18 siblings and a mother who tries to fix Alex up with every eligible bachelor she is able to find. Her newest find is Ed Marceaux, a co-worker of one of Alex’s brothers, who is in town to protect a witness in a murder trial – all undercover, of course.

**
All in all this a short interlude with some good and funny ideas, but it is written rather chaotically. The language tries to incorporate the Cajun French dialect. In my opinion the Cajun aspects could have been more elaborated. Sure, you have the general setting in the swamps with alligators and catfish and some mentions of the local cuisine, but what makes Bayou Miste a special place? Don’t get me wrong, this is a funny book! I just don’t see a fully exploited potential. If you are looking for an easy and entertaining read, this book is well fit.

This is the 1st book I’ve read from Elle James! I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I would say I would give this book a 3.5 stars. :)

This story takes place in Louisiana where Ed learns while he is undercover trying to keep a witness safe until the trial; he is going to meet his best friend/co-workers family which happens to be 18 people! Ed tries to blend in Louisiana and finds the area interesting… oh yes very interesting.. seeing a woman and her friend run in her nightie after a naked man running down the street!

Alex owns her own business, has a dog, Sport and best friend, Calliope but no man in her life. Her friend/ sister in law give her some voodoo potion (from Alex’s grandma) to give her to have her fall in love….

Ed and Alex are attracted to each other especially when Ed sees her in her blue nightie and she definitely notices him! However, she doesn’t do relationships despite her mother’s meddling attempts.

The book is definitely adventurous. It has drama, humor, love, kidnapping and wonderful friendships!

While, I enjoyed this book- I didn’t enjoy the storyline really regarding LA area/surroundings. Maybe because I’ve never been to LA, I don’t know but it kind of got to me…
But I did love the story line of Alex and Ed, Alex and her friend Calliope, and the true love Sport had for Alex and the devotion to her—and everything related to that aspect of the story!
It made me so upset/ my heart broke for Sport and Calliope to help save and find Alex! It portrayed that when someone loves you to what lengths they will go to save you! In that, I loved the book and loved the Epilogue even more!

I have to say that despite me not liking the area of where the book was taking place, I did love the characters. I loved them so much that I look forward to the author creating a book for Calliope! She deserves to be happy and find someone to love. I had such heartache for her and really want her to have an HEA of her own!

4 Voodoo infused stars!

I truly enjoyed Elle James’ Déjà Voodoo and the story the brought to life magic and love. The third installment in the series, it continued with the feel and voice of the prior two books. However, this one had a little bit more spunk to it.
Alex Boyette is the oldest girl of 19 children, successful in business, owns her own house, but her mom refuses to let her single life continue to happen. Constantly being set up at family dinners, Alex is not thrilled to follow through with the latest invite, but she can’t refuse.
Ed Marceau is in the small Voodoo town of Bayou Miste hiding the most sought after witness for an upcoming trial. Renting the Boyette cottage, he feels rude to ignore the dinner invitation from Barbara Boyette, however, he especially doesn’t want to attend after speaking with his co-worker Ben, the oldest of the Boyettes.
After formally meeting each other, Alex and Ed fight their instant attraction to each other. Alex doesn’t want to complicate life even further with a relationship, especially to a man who is only on vacation and leaving Bayou Miste soon. Ed was burned from his previous marriage and he doesn’t have time to concentrate on a fling while trying to protect his witness.
Things escalate until there is no turning back, yet danger has arrived at their door step and someone will have to be saved before they both lose each other.

Alex is a fun character who takes life too seriously, is strong, independent, and always feels the need to be in control. When her life is thrown into chaos with her dog, Sport and best friend Calliope, and her mother and Ed, she keeps pushing things away to try and handle them.
Ed is simply irresistible especially when he can’t seem to resist Alex and he lets her know it. Extremely protective yet knowing when to back off, Ed is off the charts sexy and just the man to handle Alex.

“Deja Voodoo” by Elle James is the third novel in the entertaining ‘Cajun Magic’ series and returns the reader to picturesque Bayou Miste. Edouard (Ed) Francois Marceau is working undercover and attempting to keep a key witness under protective custody. His partner, Ben Boyette, hasn’t quite informed Ed that he has 18 siblings in all, including Alexandra (Alex) Belle Boyette, who has helped raise her 8 younger siblings. Lucie LeBieu Boyette gifts Alex with a voodoo bag which turns her world upside down and complicates her attraction to the reticent Ed. A dog named Sport figures significantly in Alex and her friend Calliope’s lives in an unexpected manner as many of the residents of Bayou MIste become embroiled in Ed’s case even as he struggles to decide what he wants out of life.

This fun paranormal romance story gives the flavor of life on the bayou even as it explores the mystical influence of voodoo which can radically change lives. The surprising effects of Voodoo queen Madame LeBieu’s interference make another great tale as more of the Boyette clan is introduced. The poignant relationship involving Sport, the danger surrounding the care of the semi-cooperative key witness and the complications of Alex’s dating life combine to make this an entertaining read. The imaginative elements showcase this author’s dexterity at combining humor and mysticism and I greatly enjoyed the glimpses of all of the Boyettes as well as the opportunity to see what was going on in the lives of characters from the previous two novels in the series. I look forward to seeing how Calliope’s issues are resolved and thought this story provided a wonderfully zany read that requires a suspension of disbelief and a willingness to be entertained by this delightfully implausible tale.

The Premise:

A little magic goes a long way…

Alexandra Belle Boyette is closing in on the big 3-0 and her mama has made it her mission to marry her off.

The enchantingly gorgeous Alex Boyette certainly makes it worth his while to find out…

Add a Voodoo spell gone wrong, and voila! madness—and love—ensues.

My Thoughts:

I absolutely love anything supernatural and, when you throw in humor, you've got me hooked. I admit, I was so caught up in the hectic goings on of the Boyette family, I actually wrote down all the names, genders, and ages (or approximates) so I could keep them straight. The family definitely entertains! The names had me in stitches ... yet for some crazy reason they all made sense. However, what I loved most about the family was the way the hero, Ed, fit right in despite his less-than-ideal family history. And, like Ed's fellow cop Marcus, I too wanted to shoot the witness just to shut her up -- no matter how funny her complaining. If you had to pick one defining moment in a book that literally left you wishing it would never end, then that moment would belong to Scout. He took my breath away with his selflessness and love for Alex. It's a shame it took a Voodoo Queen's spell to create such a perfect man.

4 Stars!

I will just come to the important part… this book was great!
You should read it!

Deja Voodoo is fast paced and has just the right amount of everything. Funny, sexy, hot guys, suspense, best friends, magic, annoying family, love… You get everything and in the perfect dose.

I liked Alex as a heroine. She is tough and independent. Although her independence can be annoying sometimes because she just drives it to the max. However I suppose it is intended like that because even her best friend gets annoyed by it.

I also liked that there was some suspense to make the story more thrilling. But the case Ed was there for never got too much in the way of the romance.

And duh... was Ed hot. This is a guy who knows what he wants and takes it. Just right for such a story.

I also loved the whole Voodoo stuff. Really funny.

But what I like the most about the book was the side story about Calliope and Sport. It never happened to me that I like the side characters more than the hero and the heroine. I even cried in the end. I won’t tell you why because I don’t want to include spoilers in this review. But let me tell you, it has been a while since I cried because of a book. Their story was so touching. I really hope they get their own book.

Another thing, I didn’t read the first book in the series. I didn’t even know there was another book but I didn’t have the feeling I missed important details by not reading the first one. I think I’m going to read the first book though. So if you want to try this series, I suggest you start at the beginning. However it is not a must ;)

The third in the Cajun Magic series, Deja Voodoo transports us back to the Louisiana bayou, where magic and mayhem run wild!

Deja Voodoo is a really cute, fun read with a terrific blend of romance, humor and just a touch of paranormal. The main characters, Alex and Ed, aren't brought together by a voodoo spell...more by a matchmaking mama and a dose of insta-love (you'll have to read the book to find out who the spell targeted). But the chemistry between them is hot and I just wanted to see them get together so it didn't bother me.

I really enjoyed the secondary characters and just fell in love with the Boyette clan. Mama Boyette wants her children to find happiness and isn't afraid of a little meddling to make that happen, and there's a really touch scene with her and Alex near the end. Plus, I love all the kids names...they just made me giggle. Then there's Calliope, Alex's best friend, who is set up for a book of her own and I'm hopeing that there's some more Cajun Magic in the works for her!

Deja Voodoo can definitely be read as a stand-alone, that's how I read it and I wasn't lost at all. Characters from the previous two books do make appearances and there were enough hints to the previous books that I really wish I had known about this series earlier. That way I could have started with book one and not missed out on one bit of the fun. Well, guess I'll be going back to grab them too! Make sure you do too!

Posted on What I'm Reading

Really late last night I finished Deja Voodoo by Elle James. Part of my reasoning for wanting to read this story is that it takes place in Louisiana, which happens to be one of my favorite states. I'm actually glad I got a chance to read this story. Let me explain why:

Technically the story is suppose to be suspenseful, but it didn't get suspenseful till the end. However, I found the story humorous. Now you wonder why? Well, Alexandra Belle Boyette (Alex) is one of nineteen children. The best part of her family is that they are all named after famous people in history, which definitely makes the family unique.

Ed Marceaux arrives to Bayou Miste to safeguard a key witness in an upcoming trial. However, the Boyette clan has no clue what the real reason he's in there lovely town, but Alex's mother sees an opportunity to help her daughter catch a man. After all, she's getting up there in age (yep, 30 is old in her mom's book for not being married).

Yes, some of the book was a bit ridiculous, but highly entertaining. Especially, when you toss the voodoo magic. I was laughing out loud at some of the situation. I found the story extremely entertaining. However, if you are looking for some serious suspense, I would suggest another book. However, if you are looking for something light and fun with a dash of suspence, I would suggest checking out Deja Voodoo.

Deja Voodoo was a splendid surprise. This is my first book by Elle James and was not quite sure what to expect. What I got was romantic story filled with laugh out loud scenes, hot sex, lots of quirky characters, and throw in a little mystery and action. Let's not forget to add a Voodoo spell that goes wrong!

In my personal opinion the best parts of the entire book is all the personalities, starting with our main two characters. Alex and Ed first meeting is probably the funniest part of the book. Nothing like chasing your 'dog' down the street to attract attention. Giggles! Their dialog was witty and the chemistry between them is just combustible. I really enjoyed all the additional characters. The all have quirky personalities you can't help but to adore. The size of Alex's family is crazy insane and the names of her siblings had me laughing out loud. There are other characters as well from author Elle James' previous books, but I felt I got enough information about them that I did not miss reading their story. But since this book was so enjoyable I'll more than likely go back and read Lucie and Ben's book.

If you're looking for a something fun to do this weekend, may I suggest grabbing a copy of Deja Voodoo, some lemonade and head poolside for the afternoon. You won't be disappointed.

I received this book from JeepDiva in exchange for my honest review. The opinions and rating of this review are solely mine and in no way was I compensated.

My review:I received an ARC of Deja Voodoo in exchange for my honest review. At first I had a hard time getting into the book. I don’t know if it’s because I hadn’t read the first two or not, but I continued reading and enjoyed it.
I did feel that Ed the hero and Alex the heroine fell in love with no real reason to do so except great sex and one date. So that threw me off a bit. Plus the storyline with the dog I didn’t see a point in it besides setting up the next book.
Over all it was a fun read and I really like the Boyette family. I will read the next book in the series.

Full review on my blog here.

Deja Voodoo tries to be cute and quirky, but somehow it just didn't pull it off for me. It never felt like we truly got into any depth in the story--I had a hard time really engaging with the characters. The drama, the suspense, the voodoo magic, the romance--it all just felt like it was glancing off of the waters of the bayou without marring the surface overmuch. Earlier books and events are alluded to (Voodoo for Two, Lucie and Ben's story and To Kiss a Frog, the first in the series) but I didn't really feel as if I missed too much by not having read them, nor did reading this one make me want to run right out and pick them up. This is actually the first book I've read by this author, and at the moment I'm fairly ambivalent about reading another. If the opportunity presented itself, I'd probably give her another chance if I didn't have any pressing deadlines to deal with. There wasn't anything wrong with this one--the writing was decent--it just ultimately didn't work for me.

In a nutshell: Just an okay read. I wanted to like its quirkiness more than I did. 2 1/2 stars.

I have mixed feelings about Deja Voodoo by Elle James. There were some aspects of the story that I liked and others that I could have done without. It begins as another fun and enjoyable read. Since the end of Voodoo for Two a lot has happened. Lucie is now living in Baton Rouge and she has started her life with Ben. She is back to her old antics of creating spells. Lucie sends Alex a Voodoo charm just as another undercover agent assigned to a case arrives in Bayou Miste. So if you’re a fan of Voodoo for Two, you know where this story is headed.

There were moments of intense high flying action on the bayou that had me on the edge of my seat. Yet, there were action scenes involving criminals with fast-moving cars that were too similar to those found in Voodoo for Two. It was just the same actions with different people in a slightly different place at a different time. Read More

Deja Voodoo was a concoction containing a pinch of hot sexual tension / exchange moments, a dash of magic, a hint of humor, a smidgen of family interactions, a tad bit of Cajun dialect, a dollop of suspense to create a good entertaining summer read.

This was a pretty good book, cher. Didn't read the first in series but it seems like you didn't need to for this book. Story's based in magic also peek my interest especially Louisiana based books. The secondary characters really supported the main characters. I think I got more into the storyline with Sport than the main characters. Giggles on the running in the streets after Sport was too funny. Not sure about having almost 20 kids but the names of the Boyette family gave me a chuckle. Coming from a large family like that would have made my job easier remembering. I was always waiting for a gator to come out of now where especially to bite the bad guys. Marcus should have gotten more "shooting" practice with the key witness. "Cajun speak", it helped at times to explain what the characters were saying.

I received and ARC in exchange for an honest review. Funny and sweet read! This is the third installment of Elle James’ Cajun Magic but can be read as a standalone. Ed is on the job protecting an important witness in an upcoming case. His partner Ben grew up in Bayou Miste and believes it is the perfect spot for them to hide out. While there, Ed is renting a cabin from Ben’s mother and is allowed the chance to me Ben’s eighteen other siblings.
Alex is the oldest Boyette daughter and since their father passed away a few years ago, feels it is her duty to help her mother take care of her younger brothers and sisters. Needless to say her life is chaotic and she is certainly not looking for love. Her friend Lucie gives her a little Voodoo magic to help her find love and the adventure begins.
A wonderful quick read that is very funny and entertaining. The characters are charming and the voodoo aspect is hilarious. The Boyettes are a wonderful family to spend the afternoon with.

This series has totally sucked me in! In this third book we focus on Alex, after years of matchmaking attempts by her mother that she has resisted. Alex is given a voodoo charm by one of her best friends, Lucie, in hopes that one day Alex will be as happy as she is being married and pregnant!! Only problem is, she wishes one night that a man would be as understanding and loyal as her dog Sport. When she wakes up, there is a naked man beside her!! Oh my! Did voodoo actually turn her dog into a full blooded man??!! Meanwhile a handsome stranger has rented a cottage from her mother. Only he isn't exactly telling the truth as to who he is and all of their lives are put into danger. Can Alex ever let herself find love instead of working all the time at her business and taking care of her large family?? Well, you gotta read the book to find out. Can't wait to read the next book in the series!

I was given an advanced ecopy of the book by the publisher through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
