Jo Michaels loves writing novels that make readers gasp in horror, surprise, and disbelief. While her browser search history has probably landed her on a list somewhere, she still dives into every plot with gusto, hoping "the man" will realize she's a writer and not a psychopath about to go on a rampage. Her favorite pastimes are reading, watching Investigation Discovery, and helping other authors realize their true potential through mentoring. She's penned the award-winning Pen Pals and Serial Killers series and the best-selling educational book for children, Writing Prompts for Kids, which has rocketed the kids that use it into several awards of their own.
Most of Jo's books feature the places she's lived: Louisiana, Tennessee, and Georgia. That's given her a special amount of insight to what makes those locations tick. Her works are immersive and twisty, and she wouldn't want it any other way.
Tobias Butler is a serial killer, he's been sitting on death row after being sentenced for a gruesome murder in years before. Now Tobias has gotten involved in the prison's pen pal program and has received a letter from a young lawyer named Jess.
Jess is determined that Tobias is innocent and she wants to reopen his case stating that she has found new facts after studying the evidence. With Tobias actually being guilty he is curious what the lawyer thinks she's found and whether she could really get him out of prison after all these years.
Emancipation is one of these reads that really should come with a warning label. With it being set in a prison environment I wasn't overly shocked to find it full of language that may offend some. But it's also a pretty dark read which I suppose is also somewhat expected with Tobias being a serial killer but along with a lot of violence which can get graphic there are also mentions of rape and other sexual situations a reader needs to be prepared for.
But with all of that said if you can tolerate the dark story line I will say this became a pretty intense read which I wasn't quite expecting. All along the story the reader will wonder can this girl actually get a real killer released?? And just what can happen if she really does?? Tobias makes it known pretty early on he wants to kill Jess so the intensity gets ramped up waiting to find out what will happen.
Overall, a shocking and gripping psychological thriller that will have the reader on the edge of their seat. Contains graphic violence, language and sexual content so beware if these bother you.
I received a copy from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
This is a fantastic psychological thriller. Boy, did I love this book. I have always been fascinated by serial killers but never stupid enough to write to one in prison or on death row or fall in love with one. Jess has a hidden agenda just like Tobias. Oh Tobias, she got one over on you, you're not as smart as you thought you were. I was like yelling at the kindle saying, what a stupid woman Jess was. Tobias is deliciously evil, my kind of killer. 5 stars for this book. I wonder what else Jo Michaels has written, I'd love to read more of her books. Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for my copy in exchange for an honest review.
Tobias Butler is one sick f***! A convicted serial killer, he's living his life on death row after being found guilty for a murder years earlier. He signs up for the prison pen pal program and is contacted by a lawyer named Jess. Jess think she can get Tobias off, emancipated of all charges, however being as Tobias is guilty he is curious to find out how she could that. This is probably one of the most graphic and darkest reads I have read in a while, but I loved it because it’s what you want, something that is real to life. This definitely isn’t for everyone, the language, the graphic scenes and just Tobias can leave you feeling a little unsafe, let’s say during and after I read this book. I made sure my doors were locked, windows shut and the lights on. This is a read that has the possibility of giving you nightmares and one I will never forget.
I am going to start out by saying there should be a warning that comes with this book ... a sign stating: Contains adult language, violence and sex. Not recommended for children under 18.
Tobias is in prison for killing a family of 4, including 2 young children. This was after he had tortured and raped the wife while forcing her husband to watch. These were not the first people who had ever died by his hands.
Jessica is a young, beautiful lawyer. Finding his posting on a penpal website created for prisoners, she writes a letter to him. She tells him how attracted she is to him and being a lawyer, she thinks she can get him freed on an appeal.
When Tobias receives this, he's bewildered. How is she going to get him free when he is guilty as all get out?
Part of the book is the back and forth letters and then the visits he gets when it's on his records that she is his attorney. Tobias is an evil, evil man. The thoughts that go through his head can be described as anything but normal.
But Jessica has some surprises in store for him.
This is somewhat different from my preferred genre. The cover drew me in ... and the story kept me reading. I actually read this all in one sitting. When you have two people who are playing head games with one another, is there a clear cut winner? The ending was not what I expected.... it was better, or should I say worse?
My thanks to the author / NetGalley who provided a digital copy in exchange for an honest, unbiased review.
Emancipation is the story of Tobias and Jessica. Tobias is a serial killer who has been on death row for 8 years. Jess is a 24-year-old criminal defense attorney. They get to know each other via a pen pal program. Jess wants to get Tobias's conviction overturned. You may think Emancipation will turn into a lovey-dovey romance, far from it. It's a dark psychological thriller containing extremely graphic material. I was in two minds about this all the way through. The positives: Jo Michaels' portrayal of a psychopathic killer was fantastic. The way he behaved and talked made a lot of sense. I loved the passages where the reader was inside his twisted mind. I thought the story-line was creative and very engaging. It definitely held my attention and I wanted to continue reading to find out what happened to Tobias and Jess in the end. But that's where the not-so-positives started as well. I think if you read a lot of books in this genre, you will be able to pinpoint quite quickly what exactly is happening here, so there were no big surprises. But my main issue was that the entire situation was so unbelievable. I'm not going to expand on this because it would ruin the story for any potential readers. If you can get past the can't-see-this-happening-in-real-life and just suspend disbelief for the sake of fictional entertainment, then you have yourself an exciting thriller here with some moments that will simply blow your mind. If you're squeamish, be warned, it contains some very unpleasant details. I tend to give low ratings to books with unrealistic plots but because this kept me totally engrossed despite its implausibility and because I loved the serious wickedness of the characters, I'm giving it 4 stars. This was my first book by Jo Michaels, and I am very curious to see where she'll take this series with her next book. I received an ARC via NetGalley in exchange for an unbiased review.
The tale is told from the perspective of Tobias Butler; a serial killer who is sitting on death row for the gruesome murder of an entire family in 2007. Make no mistake Tobias did it, spend a little time in his head and that becomes perfectly clear. But he’s bored and joins a pen pal exchange. Here he meets a young, beautiful lawyer named Jess who believes him innocent.
The tale that unfolds is twisted as Tobias plays this young woman. I sat on the edge of my seat waiting for the outcome. Brilliant, dark, refreshing and twisted Jo Michaels took me on one heck of a ride.
This is not for the feint of heart. It is dark, edgy and there are triggers everywhere. View Spoiler » It was clever and well written.
Norman Gilligan was the perfect voice for Tobias. He captured his thoughts, his charismatic ways and gave the character an authenticity as the story unfolded.
I needed a drink after this ended, and a chat with the gal who recommended this dark, twisted tale to me. Then I grabbed Provocation, the next standalone audiobook in the series! 🤣
Emancipation is a deliciously creepy thrill ride. I have never hated a main character so much in my life. I think that is one of the things that makes this book so different from what I usually read. In most books you love the leading guy, he meets the girl, they fall in love and then they live HEA. Not in this book. LOL There are no warm and fuzzies here, but if you want an intense, mind blowing story then this is your book.
Tobias is pure evil and to say I wanted him dead is an understatement. With each page my desire to wrap my fingers around this guys throat or be the one to push the button that ends his life on death row increased. He has no good in him and nothing but disturbing thoughts come through the pages. His ability to manipulate and use his charm when it suits him is truly terrifying, especially when an attractive young attorney, Jess approaches him with a chance to be free. His twisted mind wants nothing more than to be freed so he can kill again, starting with Jess. I cannot tell you how many times I got chills from his wicked and vile thoughts.
This story is electrifying and OMG what an ending. It is probably one of the craziest and most shocking endings I have read to date. Bravo Jo Michaels!
5 Thrilling Stars I was given this book for a review free of persuasion from the author or anyone else affiliated with the book
*This book contains graphic material and is not suited for people under the ages of anyone who can not handle very graphic material.
WOW. By far one of the most edgy books I have ever read. Emancipation blew me out of the water. Jo Michaels hit the nail on the head with combining the perfect plot of a serial killer locked in prison and the perfect innocent lawyer.
Tobias is a man on a mission when he knows that he wants. A couple of things he wants is his lawyer and free of prison. Jessica is a sweet lawyer who is good at what she does and is capable of getting the most the vile of people out of prison. Jess has her eyes set on Toby, Toby has his eyes set on Jess. Who will come out on top?
That ending absolutely blew me away. I cringed, cried, almost threw my tablet and cheered. I won't say anymore. I will say that Emancipation WILL leave you with one of the WORST book hangovers you have ever had.
This looks pretty good, and I can't believe somebody rated it with 1 star before it's even released, so I'm rating it 5 stars, because that's how excited I am to read it.
This story is wrong, wrong, wrong. But in all the right ways.
Now that I've had the pleasure of reading this book, I can tell you a couple things:
1. It's hard to put down 2. The writing is great 3. The story is dark. Very dark. 4. There is no hero here. The characters are despicable. Every single one of them. I loved how much I hated them, but there was one point in the story where I tilted my head and said, come on, even THAT guy?? 5. I really wanted one of the characters to redeem themselves in the end, but they're all evil, through and through.
Verdict: I couldn't put this down, which for me is rare, and so it's a 5-star read. I was a bit disappointed with the characters, but the story is fabulous.
Recommend this for anyone who likes a dark story and villains with a cat-and-mouse plot. There's sex, but not a ton. Very well done.
Received an ARC for honest review! Is there a option to give a book more then 5 stars because this book definitely deserves it. I think maybe this is one of the most f*cked up books I have ever read. It was a basic plot, with so much more added on to turn it into something else. As I was reading I was thinking I had the ending figured out, it was going to be predictable, but I just didn't see that ending coming at all. This was a story very well manipulated by the author, she had you thinking one thing but all along she was one step ahead with the truth. The story had me on the edge of my seat the whole time, wondering what would happen next. There is a lot of graphic violence in this book and it's definitely not for the faint of heart. Some parts had me cringing in my seat. I love the cover, I loved it before I read the book, it's creepy but catches your eye and makes you want to know more. But after reading the book, I think the cover is PERFECT! If you are a fan of dark, psychological thrillers then this is right up your street. *hides in the corner, stalking the author*
Total page turner! I love psychological thrillers so I was very intrigued when I read the description for this book. I liked how the author actually put the reader in the mind of this psycho. I would get so engrossed when reading this book that I would have to stop and make sure I was really in a safe place and no where near this maniac. This story kept me guessing the ending almost up to the last chapter. I had an idea how this might conclude but the author surpassed any of my expectations for the conclusion of this book. I have not read this author before but I am now eagerly awaiting the next book she puts out!
Was given ARC for honest review. WOW. Just wow. I devoured this book could not put it down. Half way through I was pretty sure how the plot was unfolding and I couldn't wait to see if I was right. However never expected the intensity of the outcome. This is a must read, I needed something different than the usual HEA and this totally delivered!!
This was a great audio. I never saw the ending coming and I’m telling you it was the perfect ending. This is the story of a man sitting on death row for the hideous crimes he has committed against women. He is guilty as sin and knows there’s no way he’s getting out of prison until one day he is contacted by a very attractive attorney who writes all the right things and he decide to play puppet master. His ultimate plan is to get out of jail and get all her money. How it turns out, you’ll have to listen to find out. The narrator did a very good job of coming off as a man who doesn’t give a crap, with deep mommy issues, and was absolutely believable. The character development was well done and the backstory was well placed throughout the story. A very good twist for those who think they know what’s going to happen but love a good juicy surprise.
Emancipation was easily one of my top reads for 2016. I would even go so far as to say it was my FAVORITE read of 2016. Why? Because I rate a book based on how much it pulls me in and makes me forget it's fiction, and Ms. Jo Michael's succeeded by leaps and bounds. Not once was I jarred out of the story because of typos, inconsistencies, sloppy prose, or unrealistic writing. I BELIEVED I was in Tobias' mind. For the duration of the book, I was in the mind of a serial killer. Now that's not to say that at times the story didn't jar me in some way and I had to set the book down for a moment and catch my breath, but it wasn't because of anything other than because Tobias is a sick, sick man. And if you read this book looking for ANY type of "love conquers all" or "bad boy romance" type stuff, you'll be sorely disappointed. The only way you need to approach this book is with an open mind and a stiff drink, because after the last couple of chapters, you're going to need it. Also, not that this really needs to be said since you've been warned about being in the mind of a serial killer, but if you can't take cussing, dark thoughts, or disturbing imagery, then I would move on to a nice little cozy mystery or something.
Lets move on to the other characters in the story. I've already covered that Tobias is a sick man and how well Ms. Michaels portrays him, but lets not let that overshadow the leading lady, Jessica Phang (love the name, by the way!). Ms. Phang is a rich, busty attorney whose life goal is to get Tobias out of prison. Why? Because she's followed his case since law school and knows in her marrow he's innocent... even though he's not. She's feisty and driven, and even a little slutty, but don't let that fool you; Ms. Phang has secrets too, and by the end of it all you'll realize she's much, much more. The other character worth mentioning is Tobias' cell mate, Hector (aka Rooster). On the outside, he's a rough-around-the-edges gangster, on the inside, he's a scared man just trying to not make enemies or be on the wrong end of a shank. That's good character development, my lovelies, and it also gives us a character to relate to. Who wouldn't be scared out of their mind in prison?
Lastly, the pacing was perfect for a Psychological Thriller. Not at any point was I bored. All elements of the story were also nicely layered and pieced together. But like I said before, this was my favorite read of 2016. There wasn't a thing about it I didn't like.
So in short, if you're looking for an entertaining, dark and twisty read, this novel is for you!
Wow! How to review a book that literally leaves you speechless?! Emancipation is a psychological thriller at its best. It's dark and gritty, and Michaels spares no detail as she describes the life of a man on death row. Tobias fits the profile of a sociopath, and as I learned more about his life prior to prison, I couldn't help feeling sorry for the guy. But that didn't last long because as he describes his crimes and hatred for women - all people, really - his true character is revealed. Tobias' daily routine is boring and monotonous for him, but then a ray of sunshine and hope arrives - Jess. A wealthy lawyer, she is invested in his case and determined to see justice served. Not only is she willing to help him appeal his case, but she is also enamored by him. But will Tobias change his ways? And if released from death row, will he murder his one saving grace? This book has so many twists and turns, and I was so caught up in the story. Jo's writing is superb and written in a way that feels so real and raw to me. And just when you think you have it all figured out, guess again. This book has an explosive finish that left me reeling and in shock. The writing is so believable and well-researched. Such a fantastic book! I highly recommend it to lovers of crime fiction, mystery, thriller, and horror. But i will say it's not for the faint of heart, so get ready! And...eat your snacks BEFORE you read this book, not during.
I am lucky enough to have been selected to be an ARC reader for Emancipation. Maybe I am a bit bias since I love everything Jo Michaels has written, that I have read so far, so I went into this book already infatuated with the idea of another great story. Realizing that I am not a big fan of serial killer thriller books, I became skeptical and began loathing Tobias. His actions, sick and twisted mind had me want to throw my Kindle across the room and just read another book.
In the back of my mind I'm thinking, "How the hell did Jo live with this person in her head for so long to finally write him down on paper?" And to a point, he is still in there trying to get out.
I kept reading, Jo has not let me down in the books that I have read from her, so far, and she wouldn't let me down this time either. There must be a light at the end of the tunnel, as I am cursing to Jess and wondering what the hell she is doing falling for Tobias and wanting to help him out, thinking he is innocent of all the disgusting things he has committed to women.
This is where the plot twists and thickens. One does not expect it at first. Was brilliantly written and the descriptions make you become part of the book. Justice is sweet and Jess got her just rewards. Clever and cunning, Jo has outdone herself and kick myself for ever doubting her.
I have had this on my kindle to read and kept putting it off. You know that saying never judge a book by its cover? Well don't! I sort of did with this one, to me it is a little creepy so I felt I really had to be in the mood to read it. Now I have read it I feel the cover is perfect! I certainly wasn't creeped out, I was glued to it! I don't really know what to say without giving anything away so here goes... Tobias is on Death row for killing a whole family. He is on a website called penpalinmate. com and receives letters from people, most to which he just throws away all except one, one that intrigues him. It's from a Jessica Phang, she is an attorney and has followed his case in law school. This letter gives Tobias a little hope as Jessica says she believes his innocence. After a some letters back and forth and a few meetings they both believe there is a good chance of him getting freed, Tobias is already planning his next victim! Will Jessica get his conviction overturned? Will Tobias be freed to kill again? This is a gripping read which I encourage you to one click you will not be disappointed!
I don't like repeating the description of a book in my review. Emancipation is a very, very graphic novel. Those who cannot handle - or will not handle - this, please don't read it. To be honest, I felt sorry for both the main characters, Toby and Jessica. Nobody chooses voluntarily to go through what they had to go through. Sometimes I had the feeling I was living inside the head of Tobias, and it was not a very pretty place. Jessica is all Tobias can wish for, but she is so much more than he thinks. The plot is interesting but for a seasoned reader not a big surprise. That doesn't matter, because once you start this book, you cannot put it down because it is so.... everything! If I may be so bold: there is just one little thing that must be a mistake> How can someone who is 24, have parents who are no older than 36 and 39?
A harrowing story, that makes me want to be sick. Tobias is one sick individual. The psychology in the book had me in awe. It's well thought out, and seems realistic, like reading a biography. Thankfully it is fiction otherwise I don't think I could have had the heart to read it.
A gripping read. 5 stars.
I was given this book by Netgalley in return for an honest review.
Wow! This book was amazing. Tobias what a character. He had the whole serial killer down tell me tell you and how he's mind worked crazy!! He joined penpal program then him and Jessica started writing back and forth. She was young lawyer believes Tobias is innocent never killed that whole family. She helping him get it overturned and out of prison. Can Jessica get Tobias out? Warning this end shock you to the core what happens!?!? I'm still trying wrap my mind over everything.
I received copy to review for honest opinion Bloggin with m.Brennan
Emancipation (Pen Pals and Serial Killers #1) by Jo Micheals is an extremely dark thriller.
Tobias Butler was sentenced to death row for the murders of a family. He is serving his time doing his best to manipulate everyone around him. He signs up for the Pen Pals Program and begins to regret the decision as he only receives mail from religious zealots or hate mail. For a change, he gets a letter that he wants to reply to. Its from a lawyer named Jessica Phang who believes she can free him. There are numerous holes in his case and she has the proof to get him out. In the mean time, they begin to have a relationship.
I don't want to give to much away but this book was seriously bad ass. I would love to see this is a horror movie. It would become one of my favorites. It was truly fantastic in its dark and twisty plot. It is rare to find a movie that would be this good. I really liked how we got to know Tobias in prison. So there was his true persona behind the person he pretended to be. He was a horribly despicable human being and I had to know what he would do next. Then on the other side there was Jess, who cared so much about what happened and put everything she had into trying to free him. It was a very cool plot and it actually ended exactly the way I had hoped it would.
Emancipation by Jo Michaels is Story One in a Pen Pals and Serial Killers series by Jo Michaels. I previously reviewed Book Five, a short story, in the same series. Impressed by the writing style, I rated Book Five at four Amazon stars. This novel, Story One, is a five Amazon star read. There are surprises throughout which reveal many opportunities for spoilers. I will be careful not to do so. The primary setting of Emancipation is a prison giving readers a realistic and possibly entertaining portrait of a life spent under incarceration. My experience was limited to that of a Deputy Sheriff in county jail, but I found the experiences prisoners face is accurate except for the length of stay.
Tobias was in prison serving a sentence that was scheduled to end in his execution. He had killed women in brutal ways because he enjoyed torture if he was the one administering it. Not heartless, he had mercifully killed his last few children with a shot to the head. They did not have to watch him raping their mother. He left that show for the husband before he then shot the husband. Most of the fun he derived was from the eventual killing of the wife. Those were the murders that landed him on death row. There had been other murders; perhaps they had only been practice for his last one. He hadn’t been convicted of all of them. There were probably still bodies to be found.
Now he was imprisoned with no outlet for his creative impulses. He could occasionally initiate fights with other prisoners who violated various prisoner codes, but he had to be careful. There were well-organized gangs. Unless Tobias was clearly in the right, unless the offender had transparently violated prisoner traditions, a group would target him, and he would end up on the wrong side of the torture curve. Meanwhile, there was little to do but eat, sleep, mingle, and shit. Then there were the pen pals.
There was a segment of a population that loved to communicate with prisoners. Some wanted to proselyte, as in the case of those with missionary zeal. Some were living out fantasy lives of having a relationship with a “bad boy.” Some may have been looking for a relationship with a stable person; the correspondent would always know where their pen pals were. Jessica Phang did not belong to the first group. Toby was not sure what her real interest was, but he saw an opportunity. It was not like he had anything else to occupy his time. Jessica was a lawyer who claimed to have studied his case in law school. She had scrutinized the matter and thought she saw opportunities for a retrial and possible exoneration that would lead to an immediate release. What did he have to lose? Tobias imagined the possibility of freedom and the opportunity to kill Jessica.
Master manipulator Tobias would spend time composing letters with the idea of seducing Jessica. Her messages and pictures indicated to Tobias that she was vulnerable to emotional and even physical seduction. Guards could be bribed; privacy could be purchased for at least a few hours.
As Tobias put his plan into action, the novel turns into a psychological thriller. Tobias is street smart and cunning. Jessica is well educated and, although emotionally vulnerable, acutely aware of psychological devices employed in deceit and lying. After all, she was a lawyer. If Tobias overplayed his hand, Jessica would detect his ploys. Tobias would lose the offer of free legal representation in his appeal for freedom. Tobias would have to show an uncharacteristically quiet and human side. Such an act would require practice.
While interactions with Jessica proceeded over time, Tobias continued to survive and plot his life in prison. Tobias wanted to get rid of his noxious cellmate “Rooster.” Maybe Jessica could help. Tobias needed to plan the elimination of “The Beast” before that individual eliminated Tobias over an argument about who owned a picture of Jessica. Tobias could do that without Jessica. Donuts were high on a want list. Maybe Jessica could bring them after she had been added as the attorney of record for Tobias. Jessica agreed to place money on the commissary account of Tobias so he could buy Doritos, another item high on his want list.
After Jessica’s first letter, one offering legal representation, mail communication between Tobias and Jessica continued a regular basis and with an ever-increasing stream of sexual innuendo. Would their relationship develop to the next level of conjugal visits? Would Tobias get a new trial? If so, what would be the verdict? Would Jessica and Tobias ever build a picket fence to contain 2.5 children? Or would Tobias achieve his final desire and perhaps strangle and kill Jessica in the prison’s visiting room?
Fast-paced with many surprises, lots of horror, and a fantastic conclusion, I highly recommend this book in its genre. I am reading Emancipation as part of the five-book plus a few chapters of Manipulation series available on Amazon for USD 2.99. I look forward to reading the entire series.
I was completely astounding by the roller coaster of emotions as I read this book. It was very methodic In the research that went into this book you can tell by every single detail.
Have to say that I was so excited to get this in the mail!! A super surprise treat! Unfortunately, I had too many obligations to dive in on March 16 when it arrived, but I dove right into it yesterday and found every available free moment I had between then and today to continuing reading.
I do feel that I have to mention that this book contains very graphic, sexual, violent thriller content. I agree that children under 18, should not read this book. My teen daughter wondered why she didn't get this book, and she looked at the first page and said she totally understood. She is hoping to get the book, M, so I told her maybe for her birthday=-)
Having said that, the language fits the characters, Jo Michaels, created brilliantly. It helps to create an amazing visual of the surroundings and people there. The first few pages of this book, had me wanting to read more. I was intrigued by the criminals personalities and as the lawyer tries to help repeal Tobias's original sentence, you really want to know how it plays out. It is like watching your favorite CSI type show and wanting to know what happens and not be left on a cliffhanger. I truly hated having to put the book down to finish what I was obligated to do, and every free second, I was rushing to read more.
I am a person who usually reads fantasy, paranormal fiction, time travel, books with angels/demons, etc... But I also like stories that are about people who are brilliant, but psycho, sort of like Hannibal. I was drawn into this story much like I was the movie of Hannibal with Anthony Hopkins and Jodie Foster. The stories are very different, but the chemistry between Hannibal and the Detective and the chemistry between Tobias and Jess felt similar just not as sexual, at least for me.
I felt like I was in the mind of the killer, and at the same time, as Tobias meets Jess, for some reason, I wasn't afraid for her. She comes off as a brilliant lawyer, and a person invested in getting Tobias's freedom, and someone who has really done her homework on his life. You get the feeling she might be stupid for falling for Tobias, but at the same time as you see how he really thinks about her, you get the feeling she will be hard to take down easily unlike his other victims. You wish/hope that he won't succeed.
The ending has a wonderful twist that any renegade will love. The famous quote: "Revenge is a dish, best served cold," comes to mind.
I have to give the story 5 stars. It really sucked me in, and I was invested in the characters. The only thing I would say I was a little disappointed with, is how quickly it ended. I thought I still had more to go and it was over, and I was like nooooo.
Wow is the first word that comes to mind when I read this book. It started out as a criminal and lawyer book with the young lawyer finding some new evidence and the death row inmate that wanted out . This is the story of Tobias and Jesse . Tobias is on death row for murdering a family , and he is bored and wants out . Enter Jesse a young lawyer who wants to help him out . They meet via the pen pal program . They work tirelessly to get him out , but oh there is so much more to this story then him getting out of jail . Will they both survive the ordeal .
I couldn't believe how complex these characters were . Tobias is not your run of the mill inmate . He is a conniving sob that just wants to left alone. He is such a asshole, you really want to just string him up by his fingernails . I was actually really creeped out by Tobias . He gave me the wiles from the very beginning of the story. What he did to end up there , I was actually cheering that he was behind bars . Then in walks Jess a young lawyer and a woman. She seems to be very naïve at the beginning of the book, she seems to buy into all the lines and lies that Tobias is telling her . As we read more into the story you see there is something stronger and she is hiding a few secrets of her own. They are great characters with such great flaws.
I couldn't put this book down , I was on the edge of my seat all the way through . The author takes us on an emotional journey. The story is not your everyday happily ever after book. It has so many twists and turns. When you think you know which way the book is going bam the author takes us in a totally opposite direction. There never is a dull moment in the book between trying to figure out Jess is up to and wanting to strangle Tobias. Which for me was every other page it seemed . But the twist the author put in at the end blew me away . I never saw that coming at all and was floored but happy when I read it . I was so blown away by what the author did at the end that I actually cheered for her . I will tell you this , this isn't you happily ever after , there is lust blood shed and redemption and revenge . You will get a book hang over reading this book so be prepared to curl up and read the day away .
So when I saw this book come across and I read the blurb I was rather excited to read it. I thought it sounded like one of those books where I could easily get sucked in. Unfortunately that is not what happened. This book is in the POV of Tobias. We know right from the beginning that he is guilty, so most of the book takes place while he is in prison.
Then he gets a letter from Jess. Jess is an attorney who believes he is innocent and that she can get him out of prison. Tobias decides to let this play out. Through most of the first portion of the book we see the interaction between Tobias and Jess. Then comes the day where Tobias does get a chance in court. At this point I figured where the rest of the story was going. The last 10% had the most movement then the rest of the book, at least for me. Then it just ends. Now I get why it just ends and the ending did seem fitting for Tobias but it felt a bit lacking. Maybe if there was a final chapter from Jess' POV...
The book in a whole was just ok for me. About halfway through I considered putting it down but figured I was this far I might as well see how it plays out. I was expecting more suspense and more of a thriller, especially since we knew that Tobias was a killer. That was not really what this was.
I do think that this is one of those books that you need to read for your own and decide how you feel about it. I can see where the story can come off as a bit of a mind mess'er, especially if you don't realize where the book is going. It just wasn't that for me.
Oh holy hell! What a mindf**k! This is one dark and twisted read. I was on the edge of my seat the entire time trying to figure out what the angle is. I just couldn’t get it figured out. Then when it seems like I’ve got it figured out…BAM! PLOT TWIST! This is definitely a psychological suspenseful thriller. This is told from Tobias’s point of view. He is a vile human who is a serial killer. He is guilty as sin! He is currently on death row and just going through the motions of prison life. To pass the time he became part of the prison pen pal program. He is contacted by all types of crazy organizations and people. But one day he gets a letter from Jess. She is a gorgeous young lawyer and she thinks she can get all of his charges dropped. He then becomes very curious and works to reel her in. Charming and good looking with a smooth tongue….and he has her hooked. The whole time I found myself yelling at Jess like WTF are you doing?!?! Run away! Why are you still entertaining him? OMG! This is very graphic as this is being told from a serial killer’s point of view. Like, make my skin crawl graphic. It was a rush reading this. My heart didn’t stop pounding. Absolutely effing intense! There are no warm and fuzzies in this story. And the end….well, the end is flipping mind blowing. I was absolutely blown away. And when it was over I had to just sit and figure out what it is I just finished reading. If you need something out of your normal comfort zone, this is it. A definite must read!
A Review of Emancipation by Jo Michaels The Characters: Jess and Tobias were so colorful, each in their own rights and when they came together it was perfect! I loved the dual points of view and getting to see each of the main characters’ inner thoughts. The minor characters, or supporting cast (because this should seriously be made into a movie), were vivid and helped to reveal new things about Jess and Tobias. My favorite is Rooster and you’ll see why when you read it! I actually laughed out loud and scared my dog at one point. The Plot: I can’t help but grin when I think about the plot of Emancipation. I thought this was going to be the run-of-the-mill serial killer book, predator meets prey. But it was anything but what I expected, in the best way. And it just goes to show you that there’s always someone above you on the food chain. The Cover: So creepy in the best way. It’s intense and #thatstare. Wow. I love it. Love the darkness and the red font. Bloody good cover. Overall: Emancipation is a beautifully-executed thriller with enough light to balance the darkness. The plot is fast-paced and emotional. It kept me turning pages until I’d devoured it all. I would recommend the book to anyone who loves a good mystery, thriller, suspense, or contemporary novels. I’d love to see it adapted to film or television movie. So good!
