At the young age of 12, Lisa Stribling began sticking needles in her arm. By the age of 16, she was a hardened junkie. After bouts of homelessness and 15 long years of living a life of crime, violence, and abuse, she hit rock bottom. Hope found her in a Missouri penitentiary with nowhere to turn but to God. Lisa's gripping story is one of transformation amidst the most trying set of circumstances. Its message of hope will empower people toward freedom and encourage them to reach out and pull others forward on their journey.
Journey of a junkie aptly describes what this book is about. Lisa Bickle Stribling, the author of the book, is the junkie and she takes us on an extended tour of her life of depravity.
Stribling is also a sister of Mike Bickle, thus she uses the Bickle name (which I haven't seen used by her in any other situation). Additionally, Mike Bickle wrote the foreword to her book.
Both Lisa and her husband, Ray were heavily involved in the drug world which inevitably led to lives of crime, and eventually, they both ended up serving prison terms. While in prison they both became Christians.
Once on the outside Stribling's life is still filled with many challenges, but she works through them all with the help of the Lord. She and Ray start a ministry (Hope City) in a rough KC neighborhood. They serve meals, have church services, and set up a prayer room modeled after IHOPKC where they pray M-F 10:00-5:00.
The end of the book contains "group discussion" questions on chapters 25-42, so I gather they hope people will utilize this book for care groups, etc. That struck me as strange, but so do many other things in modern American Evangelicalism.
I was incarcerated when I read this, and I loved it. I found so much hope in it back then. I'm now a women having been in recovery for four years, and I still think back to this book. :)
I absolutely loved this book! Lisa Stribling's story is incredible and hits very close to home literally for me. It's amazing what can happen when a person lets God write the story!!!
