Addicted to history and romance, Katherine spent the better part of her childhood roaming the globe as an Army brat. Then while attending college, she was swept off her feet by a military officer. Yes, reader she married him, and they continued traveling the world. Four children, two Labradors and three cats later, Katherine put down roots in the south. Where, at last, she pursued her lifelong passion of creating vivid stories that came calling with abandon. Adventure. Mayhem. Swashbuckling heroes. Her books are pure escapism at heart.

A thrilling pirate read! Set during the Golden Age of Sail; 1809!
The cave/lagoon where the Black Regent kept his ship was impressive and well illustrated. As well as, the dialogue and descriptions of person's clothing and locations. Bone kept each character in their character, whether it was through speech or their inner thoughts; well done.
I was a bit skeptical when we were in the Black Regent's perspective and he was thinking about his wife, in her green colored, second wedding dress. I'm not sure he would have known all those clothing terms and described the clothing as such. These details would have been better coming from Prudence's perspective, from one who would know and care about such small details.
The beginning "newspaper clippings" were a nice touch to gather information about the Black Regent's activities, but the dates were a bit confusing, since each chapter had a new month and the timeline kept moving forward by months, whereas the main story only took two days to cover, expect for the prologue and epilogue, which were outside the main story's two days.
During the climatic duel, it became a little confusing with all the gentlemen in attendance and their names and who was talking or what their backgrounds were, they weren't quite fleshed out enough for me to remember who was who, but the action between Tobias and Basil, the duelists, was not confusing.
Overall, an adventurous pirate rogue tale; can't wait to read the rest of the series!

3.5 stars I enjoyed this short story but wish the author had written a book starting with them meeting or their marriage and ending where this one does. Even though they often mentioned the past, I wanted more details. That being said, for a quick evening read it's good. I plan to read the next one in this series.
A suicide in 1806, a vow to his father, and an assassin’s attempt on his own life in 1807 compel Tobias Denzell, the sixth Duke of Blackmoor, to abandon his beloved wife Prudence and assume a false identity. The Black Regent, a notorious smuggler and pirate, allows him to protect his wife, assist those who have suffered devastating losses at the hands of a greedy swindler, and help out-of-work miners in Exeter, England. His sole aim is to bring about the downfall of the Marquess of Underwood, a curmudgeon obsessed with wealth who will do whatever is necessary to acquire others’ inheritances.
For two years Tobias attacks Underwood’s ships until he is on the verge of bankruptcy. But then his wife decides to marry Underwood’s son and shows her future father-in-law a survey map of the Blackmoor estate. It shows the location of a rich vein of copper – a fact that puts Prudence in grave danger. Once Underwood gets his hands on her dowry, her worth will be nil. The only way to save her life is for Tobias to come back from the dead, but she may never forgive him for betraying their love. Not to mention that his sudden reappearance will endanger his life since Underwood will assuredly attempt to murder him again, and someone may connect him to the Black Regent, which will earn him the hangman’s noose. The lynchpin in his plan to finally bring about his nemesis’s downfall and keep Prudence safe requires the help of Underwood’s son, but Tobias is no longer certain he can trust his longtime friend.
It’s taken two long years for Prudence Blackmore to shelve the memories of the horrible night when her husband died, but with the Earl of Marwick’s help, she is finally ready to move on with her life. She’s no longer the timid widow, but a strong woman who can stand on her own feet and take whatever life brings. Although still in love with Tobias, a dead man can’t give her the companionship and family she desires, so she accepts the earl’s proposal. Standing at the church altar, she’s unprepared for her husband’s resurrection. Anger and hurt play tug of war with her heart, and the winner is by no means a certainty.
This historical romance novella is the first volume in a new series, Regent’s Revenge. Bone’s imagery is vivid and readily transports readers back to the 19th century, and her characters are memorably drawn. It’s a short, fast-paced read with only a small portion of it taking place on a ship, but it adeptly sets the stage for future adventures.
Prudence, Duchess of Blackmoor, has one desire to be happy again. After struggling to overcome the horrifying death of her husband Tobias, she accepts an offer of marriage from Basil Halford, Earl of Markwick, Tobias’ best friend & the man who has helped her recover from Tobias’ death in a stable fire , confident she’s taking a step in the right direction. Tobias, the Duke of Blackmoor, crosses the line when an assassination attempt on him fails. To restore the reputations of friends under attack by the same villain, and ensure his wife’s safety, he stages his own death, becoming The Black Regent, a notorious pirate bent on brandishing justice, never thinking he’d survive. But to his amazement, he has. A well written novella, the pace is fast & gripping, I read it in two sessions. The characters have good depth & are well portrayed. Tobias is everything you want in a hero, tall, dark & gorgeous plus he has honour as does his close friend Basil. Prudence has grown into a strong woman who has worked hard to master the running of Blackmoor estates but she has to question herself as to whether she can trust Tobias again. Wrongs need to be put right, a villain needs to be exposed & a duchess needs to be won again. I thoroughly enjoyed the book, I love a romance that has some mystery attached it also set the scene for the series.
My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read
And Princess Buttercup, plus various loyal henchmen. With all attendant skullduggeries and mayhem, suspense and potential backstabbing (and shooting, stabbing, tripping, gouging, you get my drift). An excellent example of pirates gone good, and not quite mistaken identities. The characters are WONDERFUL! I live to read people like these. The plot twists are splendid - this is a multi-ply rope we're reading through, not some one dimensional piece of tripe. About the time I figured it out, I had to go back three pages to make sure I had my characters straight, because SURELY, oh surely, he would not do that! That could not be so! And the crescendo of action! Do not read if you are fainthearted.
This is an action-packed novella that kicks off the Regent's Revenge series. To protect his wife and take down his enemy, Tobias fakes his death and becomes the notorious pirate The Black Regent. To protect her estate and try to heal her broken heart, Prudence decides to marry again, even though she feels no real passion for the kind and decent Earl of Markwick.
From the minute Tobias reveals himself, it is a wild ride to reclaim his duchess and make sure the man who tried to have him killed faces justice. I liked that both Tobias and Prudence put others before themselves to try to protect their loved ones and those they were responsible for. And it was great when they finally got together and were able to really begin their lives together.
This is my introduction to Katherine Bone and I know it will not be the last. I was intrigued by the blurb and was not disappointed. I loved, loved, loved this novella. It ticked off every single box in the category of what a good story ought to contain. There was high drama, best friends, loyalty, revenge, deranged villains, a dashing hero, a capable but confused heroine, lots of action and adventure, danger, pirates, a duke, a duchess, an earl and a second chance at reuniting two soulmates. This is a must read. You will not be disappointed. I received a free copy of this book from the author and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Prudence Denzell…Duchess of Blackmoor, a widow, soon to be bride of the Earl of Markwick. Tobias Denzell…assumed deceased Duke of Blackmoor, lived secret life for past two years, returned from the dead. Alright the story jumps right into drama and mystery. Hmmm the h is not making it easy for the H, in fact she is challenging him outright. Wow the H has a large internal revenge contract, but he is determined to fulfill it even at his personal expense. The h has discovered a big secret about her husband and she is in disbelief. Of course the H wanted the h to stay away but she was not letting him leave her again, LOL. Yes, there was triumph and everyone was avenged.
This is a shorter novella to get you started into this series and it’s a grand start. Even though it’s shorter, the author does a nice job pulling you into the action and keeps it running smooth. I’m always up for a good pirate tale – and this story did not disappoint. Peeling back the layers of the suspense kept me turning the pages, and for a shorter novella, and I think reading this shorter novella before jumping into the series will give you a great background. A fun read of swashbuckling pirates who imitate Robin Hood instead of keeping the loot they plunder. The Duke, as the Black Regent, is out to destroy the man responsible for not only his Father's death but many other's, in his ploy to become ever richer with no heed to law or man. The Black Regent will prevail to bring him to justice and to keep his Duchess from an early demise.
DNF'd at 67%. I just can't anymore. The plot is BORING which makes me so upset because it had so much potential! A pirate duchess? Hell yeah! But that's not at all what is happening here. The writing leaves a lot to be desired. And as book 1 in the series, it feels like there's a lot of backstory that I missed which is really distracting. I won't be finishing this book or the series.
This is a sweet, swashbuckling fun romance. I enjoyed the story and the main characters. Getting to see Prudence find the love that she thought she lost was heartwarming. The story is easy to read and compelling. I wish that the story had been longer so we could have seen more of the backstory and the love these characters had before.
The Pirate's Duchess Regents Revenge Series book 1 by Katherine Bone is an excellent story. I really liked the characters they are believable, you feel there emotions. There is adventure, action, dueling, secrets, overcoming emotions, and shock. Must read. My opinion Thanks
This novella was a little slow at times and it is just what the book described, sensual. However, it is not very smutty (3/5 stars) and it’s more about action than pleasure (as I expected after seeing ”steamy” and ”sensual” in the description of the anthology). 3.5 stars.
I liked the characters and the plot. It was a quick read. The story built up nicely, but the resolution was quite simple and quite unrealistic considering the situation.
I enjoyed this story. You feel what the characters are going through, and I really enjoyed the plot. I received this book from the author; this is my honest review.
This is a very enjoyable novella to read ! Loved the characters and the twists and turns that are part of their story. I will definitely read more books by Katherine Bone, I love her style!!
I LOVE Katherine Bone. In fact, her pirate stories are ranked among my top ten favorite series. She doesn't just tell a story - she is able to bring you into her world so that you become a part of it. The world around you ceases to exist, and instead of your couch, bed, whatever - you are transported to heaving ships surrounded by pirates. And somehow - she manages to make that sexy.
If you haven't already ready her Nelson's Tea series, I highly suggest you get on it immediately. While it isn't necessary that you read this in order to understand The Pirate's Duchess (in fact The Pirate's Duchess is an introduction to an entirely new series), it will allow you to experience firsthand the amazing amount of work (and historical details) that Ms.Bone puts into her work.
I suppose I should take a moment to talk about why I liked this book specifically instead of simply gushing about the author and her other books. To put it simply - its all in the writing. Her characters become real almost from page one. You experience their losses, their hopes, their fears. You cling to your kindle anxiously as the story unfolds desperate to find out what happens next. Does the Heroine arrive in time to save her husband? Does the Hero accomplish his mission or is he thwarted by the very people he calls friend?
When you are reading a book such as this (even if it is a short story and I would have loved for it to be full length simply because I'm selfish and I wanted more time with these characters and more time in their world), time ceases to exist. It it just you, and these wonderfully written characters trying to overcome extraordinary odds.
Prudence is getting married again. After being devastated after learning of her husband Tobias’ death, she tried valiantly to go on. But what a shock Prudence gets on her wedding day, when the person who objects to her marriage is… her late husband, Tobias! He had to lay low, while trying to avenge his friends, and to do so, he became the infamous Black Regent, a pirate! What a fantastic novella! Super fast-paced, all the characters are terrific: complex, engaging. The story is solid: there are no plot holes as to why and how Tobias became a pirate, and he is the epitome of dashing! I loved this story so much! Lots of action, with so many fabulous plot twists, and best of all, everything makes perfect sense, and nothing is convoluted. The romance is just right, it progresses organically: a sympathetic and strong heroine, a delectable pirate, who’s a most honourable man. And that ending that left me begging for more! Excellent!
Gasp! Excellent! Fast paced, lots of action, and can you say twists and turns! I loved it! Great characters, a delectable pirate, a lovely romance! Another excellent read!
I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
