Wow, this was a first time read by Lora Ann. I'm soooo hooked! Phenomenal writing, the characteristics of the storyline; absolutely amazing!

To a degree I want to hate Keeley. Her vices and addictions are overpowering. She doesn't care what lies she tells, who she hurts even if the person she hurts the most is herself. The monkey is always on her back and I'm not talking about the drugs you shoot up your veins but from what I've read she's not been a stranger to that either.

Tarius McNeil a.k.a Tar, is a mountain of goodness, a breath of fresh air. He brings light to her darkness and for some unimaginable reason wants to save her. Yeah in my mind she's not redeemable, but that's me! He's practically surrounded by vipers, people he shouldn't trust and have no bones screwing him over, tho there are a few that are good. Again I'm being biased.

Incredible read with paranormal elements. Steamy in the sheets and out of and men that makes your panties combust! No doubt about it, five knuckle bashing stars!

Wow where to begin, Lora Ann is amazing writer. Dark just shows another level of the wonderful author. Lora gifted me the ARC for this book in return for my honest thoughts.

I went through a few emotions reading this, wanted to put it down but couldn't I needed to read the next page and the next. Keely oh baby girl, you could feel everything this woman felt. I saw her strong as I saw her weak. Though never her fault. Keely is a ball full of emotions, see sawing through all of them.
Tar is damaged also just not as badly damaged as Keely, the woman he loves. Or is he? He has his own demons he must face, as well as Keely having her own. Face them in the midst of a important investigation.

Both Tar and Keely has a amazing support group around them, will it be enough to help them see themselves so they can see each other.

~Not everything is black and white~ awesome characters, great story and length. Dark intense wonderful. still leaves me reeling. Enjoy

This was a hot mess. At the beginning, Keeley is getting down and dirty with the devil and I'm thinking Sweet! Been a while since I've read a paranormal erotica only it's a dream so I'm not 100% sure if she's just whacked in the head or if there truly is a pnr element. I'm going back and forth on this when the devil starts talking...so I'm going with pnr. This is only confirmed for me later when she has a horrific encounter with said demon, receiving life threatening injuries.
This is where it all starts to get weird. She's rescued by an old flame, Tarius, and taken to a medic. The damage is so bad, she needed surgery on her uterus. More demons talk to her, and her clit ring is pulled out causing more damage (is it in her head? Hmm). I'm starting to think it is but now he's saying things like "he would fight a legion of demons to protect her" and "A war for her soul." Argh! I'm so confused! And worse, I'm starting to not care because somehow with all of those injuries, post surgery and all, she was able to just walk out and elude both Tarius and the medic (did I mention they're both SEALs?)
And we're only on Chapter 5... So she happens to be found by a homeless nurse who helps her (of course!) who gets her to some underground hospital which happens to be a drop point for a human trafficking ring.
Sooo, Tarius and his crew rescue her and then she goes undercover with this group of special forces guys to bring down this sex slave ring.
Throw in one of Tarius' subordinates that wants her for himself and is playing dirty and you have even more drama.
The demons make another appearance later on when they force her to hurt herself thus finally making it clear that they truly are all in her head (I think...though that scene in the BDSM dungeon when she was tied down and being all sorts of screwed by one at the beginning makes less sense if that's true.)
I'm actually skipping a lot of side stories with her past and her family...but sheesh. This was just all over the place.
I will say this, though...The cover is amazing. Beautifully done.

BUY THE BOOK

DNF at 44%.

I'm sorry... I tried, but I just can't do it. I might have whiplash from this book being all over the place.

description

I bought this book because of all the amazing reviews, that sexy fucking cover, the synopsis and that glorious warning. I love warnings like that. I love that dark and fucked up shit! That warning is very appropriate and readers should approach with caution because this book does deliver on that promise.

I feel like I also got a little bit of everything else... emotionally damaged, drug addiction, demons (but this isn't paranormal??), BDSM elements, violence, possible triggers for some readers, alpha males, friend trying to steal your girl, past coming to haunt you, runaways, homeless nurse, Navy SEALs, rouge SEALs, handy medics, sex ring, dungeon, multiple nick names, murder?, sex, some cheesy dialogue, pain, mind-blowing orgasms, multiple orgasms, genital mutilation, secret missions, betrayal, time travel, ninjas, assassins, Power Rangers and Godzilla.

description

Listen, this book just didn't trip my trigger. I wanted it to, but I just couldn't connect and I was so lost. It almost felt like I was skimming the book but I wasn't, I would go back and reread just to make sure I didn't miss something. There were no explanations in time lapses. One minute you are recovering from surgery on your vagina and the next having crazy hot sex against the side of a building. There are also a lot of references to a past which feels like it should have been book #1, but this is the first book in this series. So, are we missing a book? One part did intrigue me and I thought this was about to turn around, Mr. Braxton at 39%... but he answered his phone and cut the night short.

Anyway, I didn't finish this book so don't take my word for it. Just because I felt this way, doesn't mean you will. So, I do recommend you try it out for yourself and form your own opinion. There are a TON of amazing reviews on this, so give it a shot.

Where to start? This is one hell of a ride! You don’t have to be familiar with Lora’s previous series, The Strand Brothers, to enjoy the amazing roller coaster of this first in a new series. However, we met Keeley and Tar way back in that series, and knew their story would someday be told.
Lora Ann has created a story so gut wrenching and beautiful, that you feel along with the characters the pain and heartache and your heart starts pumping like you’ve been running. It’s a fast paced thriller with gritty and raw scenes that keep you on the edge of your seat, wanting more, cheering for Keeley and Tar’s light and love to make it through all the pain.
Keeley is a runner – she runs from her emotions and thoughts, thinking that she’s protecting everyone around her. Tar, he’s a warrior on all levels. Dark brings to light Tar’s background and more of Keeley’s struggle with life and pain. Wonderful new characters are introduced like Mitch and you see a sprinkling of Keeley’s family, The Strand Brothers, and their amazing family ties. And of course there’s Viv and Braxton, the villains to love to hate. Man, Lora Ann, you know how to write really good bad villains!!
If you like dark, thrilling, on-the-edge, steamy reads, this is for you. Some scenes are triggers, so if you’re affected, this may not be for you. I’m at the top of that roller coaster, waiting to go down that first monstrous hill! Bring on the second part!! 5 out 5 stars. I hope you enjoy this as much as I did.

Dark is the perfect title for this book, This story is about Tar and Keeley, Love these characters, this book also brings in The Strand Brothers and their wives, Keeley is Lacey's twin sister.
As usual the family Ralley around to help Keeley, who has gotten herself into more than she bargained for.
I couldn't put it down, although very dark, there is a true love in the story, Tar loves Keeley and she loves him, but can he really help her to balance out what she thinks she needs and wants.
We will have to wait for the next book to find out as this one is left on a cliff hanger.
The next book can't come quick enough, i really hope they both have a happy ending, but i think there will be a lots of bumps along the way.

Wow, what a ride! This book took me through so many emotions!!
It's true that you don't have to read the Strand Brothers books before reading this one, but I would recommend you do. You get to see all 3 of the brothers and their wives again in this book, and it's just more enjoyable knowing the back story there.
Keeley is such a strong woman, who has been thru so much, but everything she's gone thru has left her so broken. Your heart breaks for her. And Tar (Tarius) is this super strong, alpha male, who is determined to help her get thru everything if she'll just let him in. Throw in a little paranormal, and an investigation into sex slavery, and you have a deliciously dark, suspenseful story! Now I just need the sequel!!

The emotions in this book are raw, they range from elation to loathing. How is one person so damaged that she doesn't believe she is worth living? Can she be saved? Does she want to be saved? You are take on a ride with so much pain, so many ups and downs, twists and turns. There is betrayal, lies, jealousy and love above all a deep in be dedicated pain both physical and mental. Which will win? I can't wait for the next one

Beautifully titled

Dark is aptly titled! What can I say about Tar & Keely other than they are both so damaged you wonder how it could ever work. Very disturbing subject matter dealing with sadistic sexual demons waiting, watching and wanting to devour your soul. Keely is a strong woman who has been to hell and back and feels unworthy of any love from anyone but most especially Tar. Tar is convinced his love will be strong enough to fight her demons and be able to give her the pain/pleasure she craves....

This book takes you on a dark ride in to the depravity of a sexual deviants mind but also the depths a victim of the depravity will go to stop the man. Sacrificing her own happiness in the process. Will Keely & Tar survive the secrecy, the cravings she has or the love they have for each other?! Lora Ann leaves us with a humdinger cliff hanger that made me want to choke her but I know she will redeem herself with the second book. I need it now!

Wonderfully written and a keeper for my bookshelf. Thank you for capturing my imagination and giving me a safe glimpse into the depravity that is sexual sadism.

GRRRR!!!!!, Lora Ann ?!?! Really!!!

Loved this book!!!!! Keeley is terribly messed up. Her inner dialogue says she's unworthy, unlovable to be loved by Tar. But Tar refuses to give up on her. She's being tormented by a demon who's name is Caleb. Tar is determined to fight Keeleys demons and her self-esteem. Keeley has been deceived by her first love who unbeknownst to her was putting drugs in her drinks, then made her do unspeakable things. After she got hooked on drugs she ended up on the streets selling her body for drugs. She ended up being kidnapped by a man ( Caleb) who loved to tortured prostitutes until they were dead. She escaped and rescued by her twin and the Strand Brothers.

I highly recommend this book but start with the Strand Brothers Trilogy. I promise you'll fall in love with all the characters. Great job Lora Ann. The cover of this book was amazing, done by Lucian Bane. Beautiful.

I jumped straight into this book after finishing the Strand Brothers series as I'm addicted to the fast paced, thrilling and overall romantic stories that Lora Ann tells. I was not left disappointed. The title is spot on as the theme throughout is very dark. Powerful scenes are written with care and really deliver a punch. Keeley really is a broken soul and a character who I instantly loved. She is introduced in Lora Ann's Stand Brothers series and I'm glad that Lora Ann chose to continue Keeley's story in this book. Her struggles with dealing with the horror she has lived through is heartbreaking and you can't be helped as a reader to really want Tar succeed in helping Keeley recover, move on and rebuild her life. There is still much more to unearth and I for one am very much looking forward to reading more.

Yes.. It's dark. Very dark. But this story really dug itself deep and had me gripped from the beginning. A woman that struggles with the darkness she see's inside herself. Who believes she is worthless to everyone. A man who wants to fight that darkness and help her find that light that she deserves. DARK is what came after the Brother's Strand series.. Even though they still make an appearance, this story is about Keeley who is trying to fight the demon within and Tar, the man who wants to slay the evilness that surrounds her. Can he? Can't wait to find out in the next installment of the Beautiful Ashes Series! And I also wanted to say, this author brought it up a few notches with this one! Loved it...

This story lives up to its name

After everything Keeley has been through she doesn't see how she can be loved or why anyone would want to she is pushing everyone away that wants to help her. She is on the road to self destruction that leads her to put herself in harm's way. All the time trying to fight her own demons as well as a ghost from the past. How can she be saved when she doesn't think she deserves to be. Yet again Lora Ann I've been transported into the story that has left me angry and truly heartbroken fantastic story that I would highly recommend

This book is the beginning of Tar and Keely's story and their fight for their love and their souls. The three books in the Beautiful Ashes series; Dark, Fire, and Light, must be read in order and not as standalone books. I read each one and finished the series in three days as I could not stop reading. Dark is filled with dark suspense, erotica, and abuse. Tar and Keely are not in this fight alone as Heaven stands with them, Hell is against them, and the entire Strand clan and Tar's special ops brothers fight with them. The storyline is haunting, gripping, and explosive as it brings together characters and intermingle story lines from two of Lora Ann's other series, Strand Brothers and Judgment (which are also must reads). I rooted for Keely and Tar hard and found myself envying the bonds of the Strand clan. These women have found men who will fight demons in hell and on earth for their family (not just biological), the women they love and for their love. It sounds like a fairytale but Lora Ann makes us believe, which leads to hope.....and faith

OMG!!! I can’t believe you ended this book like that. I should have known though from the other books that I have read by you! And, I was so happy to see the Strand Brothers & their wives in this book!

You don’t have to have read the Strand Brothers Series to start on this one. It is a bonus though if you have because you will recognize some of the characters that were in it.

This is Keeley Kincaid’s story (Lacey is her twin sister from the Strand Brothers Series). Indescribably bad things happen to Keeley. Do read the warning to decide whether you would like to read this book.

Tar aka Tarius McNeal is in love with Keeley. Tar would just take her as she is but, Keeley feels she needs to do a penance for the things she has done in life. She ends up deceiving those that she loves and the story continues from there. There is a little evil paranormal element happening in this book. Although this is not a paranormal book. Oh and there is a hotness factor as well!

If you love reading dark themed books then you should read this one. But, again heed the warning. If you don’t like anything in the warning blurb then I would suggest you don’t read this book.

Oh and to have Lucian Bane do the cover for your book that is an added bonus!

Just so you don’t have to go in search for the warning:
“This is a dark, erotic, romantic thriller that contains elements which may be disturbing and offensive. If you are bothered or triggered by violence, torture, and abuse, please read with extreme caution. For a mature audience only!”

I received a complimentary copy of Dark (Beautiful Ashes Series, Book 1) for an honest review and I loved reading this book. I give it 5 stars.

This book gets No recommendation from me.

This book had no substance, No world building and No logic.
I got thrown into a dark world of torture and demons. Coupled with a love struck hero, for no apparent reason. A self sacrificing heroine, guilt ridden and making one silly decision after another. Again for no apparent reason.
It was a confusing read. No obvious storyline or even a substantial background to back it all up. Here and there you get a glimpse of the past, but it is all overpowered and only background noise. As the main focus lies on torture and sex and abuse.

I expect more from a book.

This was my first time trying Lara Ann, and there's no doubt in my mind that it will also be my last. I couldn't even finish this book, whereas normally I finish every book I start.

Honestly, a lot of the issues here can be summed up by one word: Editing. Or, rather, a lack thereof.

There are clarity issues, distracting tense/grammar issues to cause further confusion, and so many stereotypes--in phrasing, character, and situation--that it's a little bit mind-boggling this book has so many good reviews. Yes, the cover is gorgeous. Yes, the blurb makes it sound like just my kind of dark read. And, to top it off, I'm pretty sure I'm an ideal reader for this book... but I couldn't do it. The book is a mess, and it needed real content and copy-editing before being published. I don't know if this is a first draft that got proofread and published or not, but it sure reads like it.

OK so I had high hopes for this book because the cover art is beautiful, the reviews seem to be mainly positive and the premise is right up my ally but it was not working for me. I made it to chapter four (I think) and I was just like what the fuck ?! I mean, she goes to some BDSM club (which I'm all for, you go freaky friends) and this dude (demon possibly?) starts fucking her with a knife.. ??? I don't mean to tell people what is freaky or not but I don't think that having a giant fucking blade repeatedly shoved in your vagina is considered BDSM, maybe try your hand at snuff or torture porn?

I don't know man, but this was weird. Maybe it's because I was stoned while reading it or maybe this book is just weird. I'll try picking it up again at some point but for now its a 'what the fuck'
