Sixteen-year old, Sophie Gerrard has been in love with her close friend, Peter Watson since childhood. She planned to tell him how she felt during their families’ yearly vacation to the Caribbean. But when Peter arrives from London with a girlfriend and his cousin Ethan, her plans change.
Disgusted by how the vacation has turned out, she agrees to go island hopping with Ethan, to avoid Peter. But even that didn’t work out as planned. When their dinghy capsizes, Sophie and Ethan are forced to swim to a cliff of rocks. She never planned to share her innermost secrets with Ethan but, she really thinks this could be her last adventure ever. In the panicked hours it takes for help to arrive, Sophie tells him how much she likes her Sunday through Monday undies, that she kissed her best friend’s boyfriend, and how she’s never made it past third base.
Once saved, Sophie tries to forget about all the things she revealed. After all, it’s not like she’ll ever see Ethan again, right? But Sophie’s mom decides he should stay with them while he does his semester abroad, and by the time Sophie realizes she’s falling for him, he’s moved on to her arch-enemy. Knowing that Ethan can ruin her junior year with one slip, she becomes obsessed with one thought: Please Don’t Tell!
Young Adult/ New Adult author. Lover of books, fine wine, chocolate, and movies. Mom to two awesome kids, and one insanely crazy boxer, who keeps me busy.
GR tricked me! You know those 'if you liked _ try this' recommendations? Sophie is horribly selfish and immature. So. Many. Tropes. Sometimes that's okay if the story and characters are entertaining, but that wasn't the case here.
Poor or no editing, wrong words used, zero character growth. The author got the title of a Bob Marley song wrong! No!
I really am in love with "Please Don't Tell." This book is far better than "Never Say Never," the first book of Kelly Mooney that I'd read.
I think the plot of "Please Don't Tell" is so perfect and really into it. The story's about Sophie's being in love with a guy, Ethan, who she doesn't want to be fallen with. It's because she's so many dreadful memories about him when she was a little girl. I like the way that Kelly Mooney showed such a pure, simple but beautiful love between Ethan and Sophie as well as the relationship between friends and family.
I adore every character ... except Heather, Matt, Jason, and step monster ... in "Please Don't Tell." For the narrator, Sophie, I'm really annoyed her from the beginning of the story but I soon grow to like her. She has something that makes me like her more and more every pages. Ethan is like the open book to me. I love the way he thinks and acts ... it's so sincere (in his way). Val is such a good friend; Sophie's super mom is so cool; Austin is so cute.
Overall, Characters are good and story is great. However, I've one little problem I've soon been forgot that's the title of the book. It's because the story's not about it. So, I gave four stars for "Please Don't Tell."
Read this as a recommendation from a fellow GR friend, very glad I listened. Such a sweet story. I really liked how Sophie was a die hard romantic and we got a small glimpse into her childhood crush and how Peter and Ethan played a huge part in it. I would of given 5 stats but there were a lot of grammatical errors and typos that were slightly annoying but I was really into the story that it wasn't too much of a pain. I do have to agree with my fellow GR friend, if you are a sucker for romance then this is a very sweet and quick read (got through it in about 5 hours). The ending is a little too quick for my liking but it was left open for another book...which I would most definitely read.
Kindles make word over usage fun and easy to spot. Inch was used 17 times.
"Her tongue licked every inch of my face." Regarding a dog. Vomit and I love my dog. "Disgust tugged at every inch of my body." Especially at the elbows. "...licking my face inch by inch." Regarding the dog again.
Although the last three involve a hot guy, I think there is a definite point where thoroughness stops being commendable. Were I the editor I would suggest the following addenda (look who's fancy and looked up the plural of addendum):
"...kissing every inch of my neck." or perhaps only 51% of it "I kissed every inch of his face..." except for his forehead and nostril area "...feeling every inch of muscle that he had." especially taking my time with the gracilis and sartorius
Ugh! I should have listened to my gut feeling. Nothing good comes out when the heroine is 16 but acts like she is 12. Sophie is a blubbering idiot and a brat. This book is just too YA for me.
The most painful thing about this book is the writing. It just feels like I was being told everything instead of being able to visualize it for myself. I don't know if that makes sense, but you'll see if you read it.
Sophie was a horrible protagonist. All of the conflict in the story revolves around her being a moron. I'm assuming she was terrified of falling in love with another childhood friend because he may see her as a sister. She makes horrible decisions. "Oh, I can't stop thinking about Ethan. Let me date my gross ex to keep me away from Ethan." What. Then, she likes to manipulate Jason and lead him on, only to make Ethan jealous. I know Jason "talked shit about Sophie in the locker room," but honestly, how Sophie treated him was much worse. At least Jason was pretty upfront about his intentions. Sophie used him.
Then we have Ethan's backstory. His dad dies, so Ethan becomes an alcoholic/drug addict. He keeps a flask in his room and gets stumbly-drunk wasted whenever Sophie upsets him. He sneaks back home in the wee hours of the night without Sophie's mom even noticing! The entire point of Ethan being in New York was to help him. I just felt like the negligence on the mother's part was crazy.
Oh and it's a little creepy how Ethan is SO dependent on Sophie. Like, God, he will be in a spiraling depression if they break up? That's heavy for a relationship that technically only lasted 3-6 months.
Overall, I did enjoy the story. I wanted a fluffy romance to take my mind off things, and Ethan and Sophie did. Will I ever reread this one? No. It took me a moment to get out of the poor writing, but I did enjoy it for what it was.
It was nice reading something light and feel good. its about being being attracted to the person you don't want to be attracted with, because of what you experienced with the person while you were young. i love the book so much because it lets you experience how young love can be, and how pure and significantly big it is.
I love how the character were written, how they grow with the story progressing. I love Ethan his sweet. and he really knows what he want, i love how he love Sophie, even though it seems so extreme. with Sophie i liked how she try's not to be attracted to Ethan because of their childhood and i love how she told Ethan everything with the thought of dying, and i think that she's really cute like that, and i love her persistence in attracting Peter and how she wants to take everything to the next level.
all in all it was a good book, a definitely MUST read.
I so loved this book more so than I thought. I love being sick because that gives me an excuse to go through my kindle and find a book that has been on there forever and read it. That is what I did and I was so glad I did. I love Sophie and Ethan they work even in the beginning when she hated him. They challenge each other while remaining honest (mostly) with each other. I love the fact that Peter her childhood crush was all for helping is cousin Ethan be with Sophie. At first, I did not like Claire and Peter cause I thought they were flaunting there relationship in front of Sophie but I realized that they were two people who were in love and just wanted to be together. I was really disappointed in the ending not that they ended up together on vacation but the fact that the story appeared to be a bit open ended. I hope she writes a sequel to the book with Sophie in England and her and Ethan's adventures.
This is definitely one of my favourite contemporaries. I love the whole concept, and the characters. Ethan is by far one of the cutest guy characters ever. I mean, Kelly Mooney wrote him amazingly. She understands that the lead male characters aren't meant to be perfect, and that they do actually have flaws. For example, Ethan has a drinking problem in this book, and he has a hard time saying how he feels, but this makes him more endearing as a reader, I personally think. To be honest, I don't think I want to say much more about this book, because I'd just end up giving loads of spoilers, but I just want to urge everyone to go and get a copy of this book anyway that you can. It is perfection, and I love the sequel just as much, which I am about to reread again right now. Trust me, once you get a slice of Ethan and Sophie, you won't want to stop. Oh, and by the way, I love the playlist at the end. Listening to it on repeat now.
OMG, this was wonderful. I think I may have shedded a tear toward the end. Loved it. So romantic. I could not put it down. I wanted to read through the night, but I had to go to work, the only reason it was not finished in a day. Love Love Love Ethan. Would have like to have heard his point of view, even though he did get his points across. Beautiful read for anyone who is a sucker for Romance. Definitely recommend :D !!
Vaia. What. Y repito hasta lo insaciable: VAYA PROTAGONISTA MÁS PETARDA. JESÚS. ¿Y Jason? ¿Su distracción? Tan enamorada que estaba de Peter. Ufffff.
"Please Don't Tell" by Kelly Mooney is for all the sweet romance junkies out there. It is a quick easy read.
Sixteen-year old, Sophie Gerrard has been in love with her close friend, Peter Watson since childhood. But when Peter arrives for their yearly mutual vacation with a girlfriend and his cousin Ethan, her plans change. Sophie agrees to go island hopping with Ethan, to avoid Peter. But when their dinghy capsizes, Sophie and Ethan are forced to swim to a cliff of rocks. She never planned to share her innermost secrets with Ethan but, she really thinks this could be her last adventure ever. When crazy circumstances has Ethan moving in with Sophie for his semester abroad she becomes abscessed with hoping Ethan will not expose her innermost secrets.
I love the characters and the glimpse into Sophie's childhood that gives us a look at both a younger Peter and a younger Ethan. I enjoyed Kelly Mooney's writing but found the typos and grammatical errors distracting at times. (I was reading the ebook version.) Overall though a very enjoyable and at times humorous read.
So even though there were errors in the books as I was reading it I really enjoyed it. The firt book from this author that I read I was not very impressed with. However I feel this book was 10 times better than the first on I read. I loved Ethan in this book. Who wouldn't, british and australian. Talk about hottie. Not only that he was so sweet with Sophie's little brother always willing to play xbox with him even though he was 8 years older than her little brother. From the beginning I liked Ethan. His cocky attitude but him being so sweet while helping Sophie getting to and from the island. Promising to never leave her side. Way to go Kelly Mooney on this book. I truly enjoyed it. I do wish that we got to see a glimpse of a few years down the road with Sophie and Ethan but was glad that we at leased to to see the 44 days later :-) What I liked about Sophie was that even though she was dating Jason she held her ground and didn't do something she wasn't ready to do or wasn't feeling right doing. Even though I did not like that she was dating him at least she did what she was comfortable with no matter how much he pushed or didn't push.
I accidently stumbled upon this on Amazon, and after debating with myself (I just read a similar book that I didn’t enjoy that much), I decided to give it a try. And I’m glad I did.
Yes, there are some grammar mistakes and spelling errors. And some scenes/situations could have been described a little better/more detailed. But all in all was it a sweet and romantic love story that had just the right amount of teasing and banter, and longing and lingering glances in it. And lots of kisses too, of course.
Sophie and Ethan’s story put a big satisfying smile on my face that didn't come off all day.
Sophie, Sophie, Sophie...girl, you make me laugh! This book was a fun read, definitley YA with a few swoon worthy moments mixed in. Ethan was such a great character and the back history between the two made for a great story. I'm just glad Sophie decided to be so mature about her arse of a boyfriend "Jason the Jerk". Don't want to say too much and spoil any of the story. Great Job Ms. Mooney.
I didn't really like it as much as I hoped I would, which is really disappointing. This book could have been SO much better (some of the ideas, if better executed, could have been brilliant), but I just didn't connect with the story, the romance or the characters that much :(
That said, it's still a quick, cute read, (another in-between-er-er) :) I'd recommend it for girls between the ages of 13-15....
rereading the books on my kindle that I read as a kid
if this book had any form of editing it would maybe get an extra half star but there’s only so much you can do with half finished sentences. i wanted to re-read it because i remembered enjoying it as pre teen but wow everything in this was unhealthy for my adolescent brain and as an adult with a literature degree i need at least some redeemable features in my enemies to lovers romance novels
One of my favourite books that I can reread over and over again without getting bored. It’s an easy read that has me hooked from the start and pulls me into their world so I never want to leave.
Where to even start? This needs so much more editing. Repetitive words throughout, numerous spelling mistakes and wrong word placement. The writing is awkward, and the protagonist is immature even for being a teenager.
My first thought was that Sophie must be an idiot for holding on to the dream of a relationship that is never going to happen. She waits every year for the family vacation so she can see her crush for two weeks and then not again for another year. She's not interested in any boys back home. Well, that's not entirely true. She was dating a boy named Jason that she wasn't all that into. But she never fell for any boys back home, holding out for Peter to notice her as a woman.
When she sees Peter this vacation, though, she's in for a bit of a shock because Peter has brought his girlfriend. Sophie didn't see that one coming and she was devastated. Peter's cousin, Ethan came along for vacation this year. Ethan, who was the tormentor of Sophie's youth and someone she can't stand. However, to get away from Peter and Claire, Sophie finds herself going on an excursion to one of the other islands with Ethan. It's all fun and games until the boat sinks from a near run in with a larger boat. They have to swim ashore and wait until someone notices they're missing.
Fear can cause people to do strange things and Sophie starts blurting out to Ethan all her secrets she's never shared with anyone, but when they're finally rescued, she's mortified at what she's divulged. She decides to avoid Ethan for the remainder of the trip, which she is fairly successful at. That is until their last night on vacation when she shares a dance with Ethan. And that changes everything. She is about to get more than she bargained for, not that she was bargaining, and her worst nightmare is about to come true. Ethan is going to come stay with her family for a year as an exchange student.
Sophie doesn't want to see Ethan again. She has conflicted emotions about him. She is finding herself attracted to him, but still remembers how he tormented her when they were younger and is still mortified about her confessions to him on the island. She decides she has to keep her distance, so she starts dating Jason again just so she is unavailable. Which is kind of screwed up if you ask me. I want to avoid hunky A, so instead I will date B who is a jackass. She didn't make sense to me at first. She was crushing so hard on Peter and then turned it off so quickly and started having feelings for Ethan, but Ethan made her nervous, so she pushed him away and started dating Jason again. See? Makes no sense. But I was young once and an idiot, so I suppose in some way it does make sense.
Ethan is a troubled soul. His dad died and he took it really hard. Started living rough and recklessly. He moved back to England with his mom from Australia hoping the change of scenery would settle him down, but it wasn't until he saw Sophie again that he thought his life might be worth something. He has always had a thing for her, but he knew she had the hots for Peter, but now with Peter unavailable, he is hoping he can win her over.
He seems like the perfect guy to me. He still exhibits some self destructive behavior, but he is jealous of Jason and frustrated that Sophie is pushing him away. Still, he clings to the hope that she'll give him a chance. Will he succeed? Read and find out.
Kelly Mooney’s work of art, Please Don’t Tell is a truly enjoyably book. From the first line: “ I've always had a crush on Peter Watson” to the very end, Mooney keeps the reader drawn in completely to her fantastic book. Sophie has had a crush on her best friend Peter for almost her entire life, and for the last year, she has been planning on confessing her love to him during their family vacation. When Sophie and her mother arrive in England, not only has Peter brought his girlfriend, but his cousin Ethan, Sophie’s childhood nemesis. When Sophie goes on a boating adventure with Ethan (emphasis on “adventure”), she ends up spilling all of her secrets to the guy she hates the most. But that’s not even the worst of it all; Sophie’s mom drops the bomb and tells her that Ethan will be staying with her family for the next year. Not only did Mooney manage to develop the most charming, easy to love characters, but she made them very realistic. Sophie the 16 year old main character has the sarcastic attitude of any teenager and is extremely easy to relate to. Ethan on the other hand is the ultimate dream guy for almost every girl out there, he’s tall, handsome, and to top it off, British. Another aspect of this book that drew me into the story was how Mooney established the plot. In other words, events that occurred came at just the right moments in order to keep the reader drawn into the book. To add on, I never wanted to put this book down. When I did, I was constantly thinking about it, and wondering what was going to happen next. The romance that Kelly Mooney generated between the characters was remarkable and made the book that much harder to resist. One of the qualities of Sophie and Ethan’s fling that is so appealing is how it began. Kelly Mooney ties in normal behavior found in the beginning of many relationships where two people hate each other so much, they begin to love each other. It doesn't seem very logical, but it seems to be very common. For example, if you have ever seen 27 Dresses, the main character, Jane, ends up falling in love with the guy who annoys her the most. She says towards the end of the movie, “You’re cynical and cranky and impossible, but the truth is, fighting with you is the best thing that has ever happened to me.” (27 Dresses) The beginning of the character’s romance in 27 Dresses and Please Don’t Tell are very similar in the way that their love started with their hate for one another. The only issue I had with this book was some of the spelling errors. Though they didn't happen very often, they were there. Therefore, if incorrect spelling drives you crazy, I would suggest not reading this book. However, I was able to look past these small spelling mistakes, because the plot was so entertaining and was a great book to read. If you enjoy teen romance books with a little bit of humor, I would suggest reading Please Don’t Tell by Kelly Mooney.
