R. Phoenix has an unhealthy fascination with contrasts: light and dark, heroes and villains, order and chaos. She believes that love can corrupt and power can redeem. Her muse is a sadomasochistic slave driver who thinks it's terribly amusing to give her the best ideas when she just got comfortable and warm in bed, and she passes on that torture to her readers. She also tries entirely too hard to be funny, and she mercilessly inflicts her terrible sense of humor upon anyone who speaks to her. She'd love it if you'd say hello!

Well, if you are looking for a swoon-worthy romance, look elsewhere since this definitely isn’t a romance book. But if you are looking for genuinely depraved and terrible protagonists with a wicked and dystopian storyline, well, you are indeed in for a treat. 😁 Since this is very short and the first in the series, we still don’t know that much about the core of world building and it’s characters. Nevertheless, what we got is enjoyable, wicked and oh-so-wrong-but-right delicious! 😱🔥 Elias isn’t antihero. He’s is THE villain, period. The witch is cruel, cunning, manipulative, ambitious and narcissistic, just the qualities you look for in a villain. Lol 😂 Enter Jace, the naive and sexy werewolf who got purchased by our wicked witch as a pet. And so this unhealthy obsession begins.

The storyline is interesting and fresh and I can’t freaking wait to start the second book in the series. The narrator did a somewhat ok but not terrific job. The voice is soothing but he narrated too slow for my liking. Had to bump it up to 1.25x speed to fully enjoy the audio. Overall, it was short, it was sexy and it was fun. Loved it.

Seeing an MC overpowered by lust for a man he hates, but only because he's been drugged (or magicked) into it, is... boring.

There's also a bit of a pacing issue. Basically we get a line of dialog that's followed by introspection, backstory, and info-dumping. Then another line of dialogue. Another bout of introspection, backstory, and info-dumping. Repeat. Repeat.

This would have benefited from some tightening, perhaps a 50% cut. But even with that, the artificially-imposed lust would still be a yawner for me. I might have kept reading it, though, if I didn't have a towering TBR pile awaiting my attention, because the mechanics of the writing are solid. There could be a great story in here. But I'm not going to stick around to find out.

DNF @ 47%. No rating because of my (inconsistently enforced) don't-rate-the-shorts policy.

Ooooh, yes! Bought is everything dark erotica should be (and a little bit more!). I love the way the characters explode right out of the gate on this one. The plot is following along at a steady pace, but with strong men like Elias and Jace the power play between the two is what's going to do it for me.

So, the plot - oh hell yes, give me more! I love the story here, supernatural beings taking over the world... and all the politics that are happening between the different factions, I can see 100 different ways this one could go.

Luckily for me I've got Ravel, Fate of the Fallen #2 already loaded on my MP3 player and ready to go!

Also gotta give props to Jack Noble who is doing a lovely job with the narration on this one. His smokey, sexy, sultry voice is wonderful for Elias *shivers*.

This was a short quick dark read that I liked. When Jace took the fall for his pack leader he thought it would be much different then it is. Elias Ivers is a witch who liked to play games and Jace is his new pet. Jace was sold as a slave to a very powerful witch Elias Ivers. The witch only wants him for his sex toy and to completely dominate him to show others just how powerful he really is. I didn't like Elias much in this book he is a sick twisted sadist that gets off on making Jace do things. I have read this author before this book was well written with no errors in grammar or spelling. I am looking forward to reading the next book in this series.

In this hot, provocative read set in a disturbing universe where supernaturals are on top and humans on the bottom, a male witch enslaves a werewolf as punishment. More, please.

R. Phoenix plunges us into the dark world of her RISQ series with the immediacy and visceral intensity of tripping on the stairs down into a scary basement and having the light bulb go out. BOUGHT isn't for the squeamish or light-hearted. For those who might mistake this short story as romance, it is most definitely not. For those who need trigger warnings, please know that there is non-consensual sex and "human" trafficking (okay, so Jace is a dog) (yes, that was a reference to Ghostbusters, I couldn't help myself) in this work.

With that out of the way, if you're looking for a story that places you in the middle of the action and reveals a fascinating, dangerous world before thrusting you into a horrifying situation for the protagonist, this is it. There are vampires, werewolves, and witches so far, and it's a heady mix--plus, throw in an ample amount of sex, and what you have is *not* Twilight or TrueBlood, but something disturbing--and intriguing. I wonder where the author will go with her story, and reading the descriptions of her other books, it looks as if there will be a shift from dark erotica into dark romance.

It is always interesting to me to see how the paranormal would function in the normal, whether in a story that inverts, subverts, or deconstructs the trope. Phoenix works more at an inversion, turning things around to see what would happen. It's a scary playground, an alien invasion not from space, but from the pages of horror novels and whisperings around campfires.

I think the only thing I would want more from the story, would be to see the actions of the characters more subtly reveal their thoughts and feelings, and for more anticipation to be built before the sex (I guess this reader is asking for more foreplay in his erotica).

Overall, a fun read, but not for the faint of heart or those wishing for a happy-ever-after ending. This author doesn't promise roses, but she guarantees there will be blood, and the color will be rich.

I love everything written by R. Phoenix. The world created is so fantastically different and exciting you just never know what is going to happen. Bought caught me by surprise. When the tables are turned and the normally powerful are left powerless in the hands of those who wouldn't normally hold any sway over them, many things can happen. In this particular instance, beautifully smutty goodness happened. I can't wait to see what else comes out of this world.

“Lick my ass until I tell you to stop, mutt.”

I don't know what it is about forced noncon puppy play, but it's very entertaining. Especially when it's a witch forcing a werewolf.

Not only is there forced puppy play but there's a magical aphrodisiac that keeps the poor pup constantly aroused.

“Shh,” Elias chastised him, fingers curling around Jace’s erection. “There’s no need to cry. There’s no shame in needing to be touched, my precious pup.”

What else could he do?
He fucking begged.

I've been procrastinating on this series/world for ages, this is going to be fun!

“Come for me, bitch,” he ordered. “Fill my ass like the rutting mutt you are.”

This Author has a great habit of pulling you in from the first few words in the prologue immersing you in the story until it is complete. I’ve really enjoyed every book I’ve read and now listened to by this author. My only complaint (if you can even call it that) is that I really want all of these books to be longer, I want more of each of these stories and more of the characters, just more of everything.

I like how with this book we get a really great mix and realm of characters. We see witches, and werewolf shifters, and vampires. And the premise and storyline is completely intriguing. That depending on who and what (species) you are, you could be kept as a slave or put to death if you step out of line. We don’t get a HEA in this book, and I was actually totally ok with that. This book is meant to be on the darker side, while being super-hot and curl your toes steamy. I would absolutely love to see Werewolf Jace and the Witch Elias ending up together for the long haul. I think they could really complement each other’s strengths and weaknesses if they just worked together instead of Jace trying to push Elias away and deny what he is obviously starting to feel (whether there is magic involved or not). I look forward to seeing more of these men and their story and what happens to them next.

Audio – I was really not expecting the accent we got for this narrator Jack Noble but I found him and his voice to be captivating while giving us this story. I think he perfected the voices for each of these men and I really appreciated the effort he put in making sure the book and characters were believable when it came to each of their personalities and backgrounds. I look forward to hearing his voice and narrations more in the future.

P.S. I would like to note that I did speed up the audio version to 1.25x and felt like it made a positive difference in how I viewed the narration as well, I liked it a lot more when it was read just a tiny bit faster.

Pony play or puppy play?

I love it when what I read pisses me off. This did. I was so pissed for Jace and his humiliation at the hand of Elias. I growled a bit. It was still hot as hell though and way too short. *grumbles* I really hope Jace gets the best of Elias or better yet makes Elias fall in love with him and then treats him like a thing. Although I could have Elias completely wrong and he could be a great guy underneath his arrogance and need to stay ahead of the other witches, however I still hate him. Douche canoe. Team Jace! Now I'm sad cause I have to wait for the next one and I've heard told the author can get distracted...I really need to google some things. Maybe subtly ask her what her IP address is. People ask that all the time right?

BOOK LACKS STORY CONTENT

I read this through The Kindle Unlimited program. The unfortunate thing about Kindle unlimited is that the author is paid per page read as a percentage of total pages. While the actual written story presented here is interesting, this ebook is packed with filler--previews of other books the author has written, previews and explanations of the next snippet of story, etc.-- to the point that the filler pages outnumber that of the story. At the very least, this is misleading to the reader. I'd be irritated if I had bought this book.

Interesting....

This a dark story told through both Elias and Jace's POV. It is an interesting read and I am wondering how this series will go. I am really intrigued by the whole villain is the better scenario idea. I read the blurb for the next book in the series but it doesn't seem like it's a continuation of the first book. I will give it a try, because to me I am hoping the power struggle from within the supes will live up to my expectations.

This is middle of the road reading. It's not bad it's not great. Nothing technically wrong. It's just not close to dark enough - for my personal tastes - and there's not enough character development of either MC for me to feel attachment or eroticism.

3 and 1/2 Stars. A good story, but all the inner turmoil got boring. I read this book in 2019 and reread it today. I didn’t remember it at all. I’m going to try the next book in the series. If it also is mostly inner monologue I’ll probably stop after it.

When you say dark erotic, I think of Nicholas Bella or Rachel Haimowitz. But this author has it right, (humiliation, orgasim denial) it just needs MORE DARK.

Bought: A Ripples in the Status Quo Story by R. Phoenix was my real first trip into the really dark side of M/M romance. This book is not a traditional romance. How can it be, with mind games, manipulation, and a sadistic witch?

THIS BOOK IS NOT A TRADITIONAL ROMANCE.

Jace is a werewolf who took the fall for his pack leader’s failure in leading a rebellion against the status quo. He thought he would meet a quick end when captured, but unfortunately for him he attracted the interest of Elias Ivers.

JACE IS A WEREWOLF WHO TOOK THE FALL FOR HIS PACK LEADER’S FAILURE

Elias is a megalomaniac with a huge ego who believes he can manipulate those around him to his whims. Jace is just a sucker who thought he would be executed, but was instead turned into a pet for Elias to break down.

My heart went out to Jace, as Elias subjected him to degrading and sadistic mind games. Their time together was mostly full of sexual frustration and manipulations. It was a whirlwind of snarky banter, forced compliance, and at the end there really were no winners.

I REALLY LOVE IT WHEN AN AUTHOR CAN MAKE ME DESPISE A CHARACTER.

I really love it when an author can make me despise a character. R. Phoenix excelled in this endeavor. I don’t think I have loathed a character before, but I loathe Elias Ivers. His arrogance and twisted mind make me want to go all wolf on him and growl and snarl.

As head of the Ivers family, he seems to be on a power trip and I really hope in the future that he meets a magnificent end. Preferably at the hands of those he has used to get to the top. I want a delectable justice served. That’s not too much to ask, is it?

I had to give this book a 5-star rating. It was short, mind blowing, and so unlike anything I have ever read before. I loved discovering this new side of the M/M genre and I can’t wait to read the second book in the series.

A Joyfully Jay review.

4.25 stars

Bought is only nine chapters long, which means that Phoenix has little time for complex world-building, despite the fact that this is a society very different from that of the reader. However, Bought is not really about this paranormal world; the story centers on the characters themselves and Elias’ evil intentions versus Jace’s defiance and courage.

Phoenix’s characterization is really successful. Elias is hateful because he is a masochist and I spent most of the novella wishing Jace could shift and rip his throat out! Jace is likeable because he has surrendered himself and even though blind love is clearly his weakness, we respond to his pain and the hopelessness of his situation.

Bought is definitely a story aimed at an adult audience. It is not a romance, although Jace and Spencer’s relationship is a secondary issue. Jace is kept caged up in Elias’ bedroom and the witch’s magic keeps him in human form. Jace is humiliated, not only because he has to refer to the man he detests as “master,” but he is forced to wear a collar and tail and subjected to a number of sexual acts. Bought certainly has graphic scenes and I am not a huge fan of erotica, but I felt Phoenix was able to enrich the sex by including Jace’s subconscious thoughts and I loved the fact that despite Elias’ constant cruelty, Jace’s contempt manifests through his challenging sarcasm.

This book was a bit of a war for me.

I loved the new world that has come about when supernaturals, werewolves and witches take control. It's not all that hard to imagine to me and the way the author wrote it was great.

I will say that part of the storyline really just... I didn't get it. Jace is paying for something his lover did. We see his lover and get to know a bit of the backstory, but it still just seemed like an incomplete story to me. Maybe we will get more closure in one of the other books in this series, but I was left feeling like there was just somethings that didn't work.

However, I will say that I did fine the story interesting and I did look forward to seeing what the characters would do next. It's definitely a dark read so be forewarned (forced sex even though it's wanted is dark for me although not horridly dark)

I can't wait to see where this series goes next.

I was given a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This is book one in R. Phoenix’s Ripples in the Status Quo Series. It’s a short, dark, erotic tale. It’s the beginning of what I assume will be a crazy adventure. Jace the Werewolf is at the mercy of Elias the witch. We hate Elias. Like HATE HATE. Like if he was on fire and I had a glass of water, Id drink it. He’s horrible to Jace and my heart broke for the Werewolf. As powerful as Jace is his reason he endures it and stops fighting damn near breaks my heart even more. I’m hoping in the next book Elias is murdered horribly and slowly. I may have to hold my breath on that as I assume the author wants to torture us even more. If you love dark erotica and frustration with the hope of great retaliation than check this book out.

To protect his lover Jace gives himself to a depraved witch, Elias, knowing he will die. Instead Elias uses him as the werewolf sex toy he's always wanted to break; physically, mentally, and emotionally. The book is fast paced and filled with non-con.
