In her collection Dwelling, Aliki Barnstone creates a rich tapestry of poetry, weaving together strands of different themes – family, spirituality, ecology. The poems are vibrant with lush imagery and precise details that stem from careful observation.
Barnstone does not shy away from beauty; she unabashedly writes about nature or mother’s love, tender, but never sentimental. Attuned to the wonders of creation, she does not use them to hide from the world, but lets her gaze travels outward, from bees and fireflies to societal issues. Her poems are filled with a sense of belonging and invite the reader to a feast where a dish of dandelion greens becomes “eternity served on a white platter”.
One of my favorite poetry books.
