Howard Phillips Lovecraft, of Providence, Rhode Island, was an American author of horror, fantasy and science fiction.
Lovecraft's major inspiration and invention was cosmic horror: life is incomprehensible to human minds and the universe is fundamentally alien. Those who genuinely reason, like his protagonists, gamble with sanity. Lovecraft has developed a cult following for his Cthulhu Mythos, a series of loosely interconnected fictions featuring a pantheon of human-nullifying entities, as well as the Necronomicon, a fictional grimoire of magical rites and forbidden lore. His works were deeply pessimistic and cynical, challenging the values of the Enlightenment, Romanticism and Christianity. Lovecraft's protagonists usually achieve the mirror-opposite of traditional gnosis and mysticism by momentarily glimpsing the horror of ultimate reality.
Although Lovecraft's readership was limited during his life, his reputation has grown over the decades. He is now commonly regarded as one of the most influential horror writers of the 20th Century, exerting widespread and indirect influence, and frequently compared to Edgar Allan Poe.
After doing a bit of research I learned that August Derleth published a "posthumous collaboration" novel that features unfinished Lovecraft ideas and stories. August took those and finished them for this collection.
Well, this wasn't really true in the end. All of the stories published in this collection are August's stories completely. He took maybe a single sentence or phrase from something that Lovecraft wrote and based an entire story around that.
So nothing in this collection, The Gable Window included, is a Lovecraft story. But they are all a part of the Lovecraft Mythos.
With all that being said, I really enjoyed this short story. Sure there is a middle point that just dumps all of the Lovecraftian references so that we can know we are actually reading a Lovecraftian story. It's just a huge dump of all of the names, and places and entities that Lovecraft wrote about before the story picks up where it left of.
Besides that annoying bit in the middle, the rest is truly great.
Cosmic horror is the best horror, and this an average example of it. Not bad, but not great either.
they were vast, amorphous bodies, hung with tentacles, looking at first glance octopoid, but very definitely far more intelligent than an octopus
Little did he know. Of course this is an August Derleth story more than an actual Lovecraft story, but still I do wonder if Lovecraft knew how intelligent cephalopods are or if he'd be horrified to learn just how smart they actually are.
