Rating for volume: 4; Rating for series: 3.
Review for the whole series - beware of spoilers.

An acquaintance wants to know the difference between the Western fandom and the Japanese fandom on 3 main subjects: 1) healthy relationships, 2) pronouns, 3) 3rd wave feminism. In general, they are not given much thought, but I thought I should choose something to elaborate it on.

A common complaint here is that the way Sata (male protagonist, the sadist) treats Shinohara (female protagonist, masochist) is pure shit, that it's abusive, anti-women, disrespectful, etc. But isn't it obvious that she likes it? Here's the lyrics from the animation's OP.

Translation: Rather than "yes", should I say "woof" instead?
That's a piece of cake!
[You] pretending to be a good boyfriend
It's good enough for me

It seems that in the first few volumes, Hatta先生 was trying to mess with the reader's emotions by inserting some rather cringe-worthy scenes. While I agree that Shinohara pretending to have a boyfriend just to fit in is indeed a horrible thing to do, would you, the reader, have the confidence to say that you've never done anything stupid when you were in high school? Throughout the manga, Shinohara develops a lot. At least now she has the dignity to apologize:

description

Translation: For lying to you up until now, I'm sorry.

About Sata, he's just a jerk with a heart of gold. However, in the end, this narcissistic bastard admits that he's lonely without Shinohara:

description

Translation: Without Erika, I'll be lonely...

Though apparently he's not going to stop calling her "dog" anytime soon...

description

Their relationship is full of miscommunications and overly clichéd "forgiving moments", but I think that's fine. They're still in their honeymoon phrase, and doesn't this remind us of our first naive relationship? Not to mention, the feels train will hit you when you read the final volume, chapter "Graduation".

Not all female characters in manga have to be "strong, independent" in order to be good rolemodels for young girls. Multi-layered, complex women are more than enough.

tl;dr: If you didn't bang your head while reading the first few volumes, you'll be fine.

why was I reading this borderline dom/sub pet play in my teenage years?

and now why am I almost sad that it's over? time truly takes us all.

this one truly beat that quickly wrapped up shojo ending, god bless. we got long distance relationship, living together, marriage, child, high school flashbacks, and that forever banter.

My fav volume since the beginning. We had a real throw back to when she was the “pet” we got to see him admit his feelings in his angry dismissive way. I liked the happy ending we got to see of them as well. Overall for the series 2.5

Final Volume Rating: 5
Overall Series Rating: 3

Allow me to write a review about both the final volume and the overall series:

Final Volume:
The last chapters showcased here were really cute and charming. Seeing the graduation chapter, really made me reminisce about my own graduation, and the entire chapter itself really gave me a sense of nostalgia about this series. Honestly, if the series ended here, I would have been satisfied. But the author decided to give us additional chapters showcasing how their university life was and how they eventually got married in the end. Overall, I'm happy how the mangaka was able to give us a happy and satisfying ending.

Now allow me to talk about the entire series as a whole.
When I read the FIRST chapter of the series, I was laughing when I saw Kyouya's sadistic side. I told myself that we were probably up for a funny series and a promising start. However, I stopped laughing since then. After the first chapter we can see how problematic Kyouya is at treating Erika and how problematic Erika is for ACTUALLY liking to be treated that way. After a while I almost thought about dropping the series if I don't see any sense of character development or whatnot from them. Around that time I am pleased to say that the reason why I managed to read up to the end was seeing Kyouya gradually start to change for the better because of Erika. For me, that was the main good point about reading the series (Well, aside from that bad scene where he threatened to break up with Erika if she went to Kyoto).

Aside from that, I really found the series to be quite.... meh. Honestly the other arcs like Rena was kinda unnecessary for me, and I felt like most of the chapters' events were quite repetitive and were just a bunch of fillers.

It is probably why because of those that I am giving the entire series just a score of 3.

P.S. The final volume was enough to satisfy me though that is why I rated this with a 5. :)

This volume was really good for me personally.

I think the series overall had some highs and lows - but overall I really enjoyed it and can see it as one I would read again. The male mc is pretty much a jerk, but he changed so much over the course of the series. At times it might not seem like it, and he says a lot of things without thinking how it's going to affect Ericka - but I think that's super realistic. It's fiction, so most people might not act like him to his extent, but he's really relatable. I love that Ericka loves him no matter what, but she also is stubborn and gets so angry with him as well. Sometimes she gives in, but other times she takes a stand and it's nice to see that side of her.

I absolutely loved the ending - not only did we get a jump forward, we got a significant one. We got a little bit of most of the characters and got to see even more of the 2 main characters growth. I've said it before, but I love when a mangaka does this - and I wish it happened a lot more often.

Graduation is here and the friends all move on to their new studies. There are a lot of time skips in this volume jumping from early college days to when Kyouya and Erika move in together after saying they should live together following graduation. From there time skips further to when they are a family. We learn from interactions with their friends that the wedding was after they started creating a family (accidentally), and that Kyouya is still studying while working part time. Erika also has some sort of job and is selling glass work online on the side, so she must have some sort of access to a studio. It's never made clear if she finished her studies, if Kyouya is in the same program as before or if these classes are past the previous graduation milestone set for them to move in together or if they both just didn't want to wait any longer. It would seem given they are getting together with their other friends again though, that they are back in Tokyo and not in Kyoto for Erika's school. It would seem that they are all fairly happy for the ending.

I was debating whether to put all 16 volumes or not as read, but I didn’t want it to interfere with my reading challenge for this year so I’m doing just the last one.

This manga was… interesting. Sometimes Kyouya was such a selfish asshole that I truly thought our girl Erika deserved better. I understand the whole plot is Kyouya not being honest with his feelings so he pushes people away, but it still bothered me lol. Specially on the whole going to Kyoto to study situation, completely selfish.

Also after all the drama of what she was going to study, she ends up being a stay at home mom? I would of liked seeing her being a professional glass maker :(

It had its cute moments, and when you finally see Kyouta being honest with his feelings it’s cute and gratifying. Overall, I think it’s the first time I read a shoujo manga where I did not love the main character but still finished the manga but did not mind it to quit reading the manga.

Graduation is always a bittersweet moment in these high school series. I think the story should’ve ended there. The brief moments of college and the time jumps to the future were kinda unnecessary. I’m okay with just imagining the future. Lol.

Overall, I give this series a 3.5/5 stars.
It’s not as horrible as everyone says it is. Yeah, Erika is a ditz. Yeah, Kyoya is a grump. Usually, these types of personalities are ones of the side characters not the main ones. I like that! It makes this a different experience. Yes, I would’ve loved more cutesy relationship moments instead of the drama/fighting but what can you do?
Would I reread this? Maybe. Only for Kyoya. I really love him for some reason lol.

Kyouya and Erika have developed that comfortable relationship that I always dream about. When I see Kyouya and Erika together the same way I see friends, I know that the marriages I hope for may in fact come true in the future. :)

I was surprised but intrigued by Erika's decision to become a glass artist. When she was lost I understood her more as I am in that exact same position. However from the start, we are in different categories as she had multiple supportive relationships that I do not share but oh well! I shall get stronger.

the guy is a walking red flag... but I'm colorblind?

can't believe I'm giving ookami shoujo a five stars when I gave ao haru ride a 4,75.

Really enjoyed this entire series and while rereading didnt feel like I cringed and skipped any volume. The character development is seen between both characters one more gradually than the other but nonetheless, the development is there. both characters are fleshed out properly and their friends are a colorful dynamic that really helps fill the story. I enjoyed the humor and the 'step-backs'. overall, I enjoyed this manga a lot :)!

first read (like when i was 13/14) : obviously, if you were crazy for a guy like the mc in this manga, then you'd probably like this.

now : so many things that happened in this manga was sort of uncomfortable for me now ... and lol the mc is kinda annoying to me now and the male character? my god the way that i just can't remember anything good about him.
