Can humans and werewolves coexist? Can they be friends, lovers, partners? Or is the wolf blood stronger than anything else?Tensions are rising in the wolf pack, triggered by two werewolf/human Kirk and Leo, Conrad and Jake. And Jake isn't going to let things slide anymore, not when Conrad could get hurt. Just as Conrad finally meets Kirk, Jake gets drawn into a deadly challenge...Jake couldn't lead a gang of werewolves. But he could, at the very least, get rid of their current leader. That would be better for everyone, and especially Conrad. Having a pack to run with mattered to Conrad, and Jake would do his best to give him that."It's not Brand's turf," Jake said calmly. "It's mine. I live here, and you guys are interlopers. If you want to stay in this town, you have to start acting like civilized people." He could see some nods around the circle."We are not people," Brand spat, before recovering himself. "And if you don't leave now, the gloves are going to come off.""Yeah?" Jake couldn't see any way out of this without a fight. "You've been threatening me a whole bunch," Jake said to Brand. "Is that all you do?"Brand opened his mouth, but before he could say anything, Erick stepped forward, drawing all eyes to him."Are you challenging him?" Erick asked Jake, in a soft and deadly whisper.Jake was starting to get the feeling that Erick was on his side. That was...well, it felt extremely weird, but he could work with it.All around the circle, Jake could see the reaction. The Reds hadn't been expecting this. Some of them looked expectant, some worried. Buzz had a manic grin on his face; Salvatore gave him a frown.Jake drew back his shoulders, planted his feet sturdily into the ground, and said, "Yes."
I love this series and I'm sure I'll binge read through the whole set again sooner rather than later.
Jake is exactly the small-town, traditionally-manly, marshmallow-centered character that I love. He's all gruff and rough on the surface, but give him the right partner and he and I both turn to mush. He doesn't say much and because of that, when he does, it's SO much more valuable than a bunch of platitudes.
I really like the twist of how the humans and the werewolves interact and the rest of the series was building up to this moment for Jake and Conrad. The conflict with the Reds was resolved well and I hope there will be more!
The six books in this series contain two paranormal MM romance shifter stories: Kirk and Leo for the first three, then Jake and Conrad for the next three. Just as with Kirk, Conrad is a werewolf. Jake is an unaware human, as was Leo. The two meet and have an instant attraction to each other. They go through some trials before a happy for now ending. The latter story has some characters in common with the first story. Erich was a villain at the start, but later he becomes an ally.
I totally love this whole series. I gave it 4 stars because while I love the story of Jake & Conrad I feel that the series ended too soon. I would love for the series to go into Erick finding his match and finding out what happens next.
