Fixin’ to Die by Tonya Kappes
Kenni Lowry series #1. Paranormal cozy mystery.
There’s been a murder and a robbery in Cottonwood, KY and the sheriff, Kenni Lowry, wants to prove to the town her competence. Since her department is small, she gets a loaner officer from the State Reserve to help investigate. The best clues and background actually comes from the ghost of her grandfather, who had the position of sheriff before her. Between the towns people, the handsome helper and her grandfather, Kenni is sure to catch the culprits.

A cute mystery with quirky townies and a ghost with lots of helpful knowledge. Plenty of twists and a cute dog.
I’m looking forward to reading more of this series.

🎧 I listened to an audiobook version narrated by Hillary Huber who did a fantastic performance with voices, emotions and just a hint of southern charm.

[I received this book free from the publisher through NetGalley. I thank them for their generousity. In exchange, I was simply asked to write an honest review, and post it. The opinions I have expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255 “Guides Concerning the Use of Endorsements and Testimonials in Advertising]

"Stop loafing. You have a job to do."

Sheriff Kendrick (Kenni) Lowry, grandaughter of the late sheriff Elmer Sims, was trying to balance her life as the head of the Cottonwood Police force of....one now that her deputy had retired. She was enough since there had been virtually no crime since she was elected, so the town council hadn't bothered hiring a new deputy. And then, someone is murdered and no one can figure out why.

It forces the issue as Finn Vincent with the Kentucky State Reserve, is called in to help. Along with a break in at the local jewelry store, Kenni has asked Wyatt, the jailer, to also be part of the investigation. The stress seems to have gotten to Kenni as she begins hearing things. The things she is hearing turn out to be something no one EVER expected.

Tonya Kappes' first book in this new series is a laugh-out-loud look at small town America mixed in with a dash of "the prophet is not welcome in their own hometown". Just because she is Sheriff Sims' grandaughter doesn't mean she has the respect from her neighbors, or even her mother who acts as if a SINGLE daughter with a job instead of a husband is disgraceful. It will take more than Kenni to figure this out, and we get to come along on this "Oh no, she didn't...." crazy ferris wheel of a story. Hooray for Kenni Lowry and hooray for Tonya Kapps. Well worth the read!

Tonya what an awesome book!!! I couldn't put this book down. Tonya knows how to write amazing southern mysteries. I was in love with the characters and the plot. Kenni and Finn work perfect together. Loved the chemistry and could not help but crush on Finn just like all the other ladies in the book. I was also happy that a ghost was able to join in the fun. It made the book very funny with her grandad. As I read I kept on trying to figure out who the real killer was. This made the book so much more fun. The mystery and the number of suspects made this story come to life. If you love a cozy mystery, gossip and hot police man then this will be your favorite. I am waiting impatiently for the next book in this series. Please pick this book up, you will enjoy it.

Review:

This is such a good book and I really enjoyed it. Cozy ghost paranormals are some of my favorites books to read, and this one is as good as any that I have read. It has all of the elements that I look for in this type of book: great characters, small town setting, a lovable ghost and a mystery to solve. What more could a reader ask for?

The characters are well developed and well rounded. Kenni is a hard working tough women who is trying to prove to her small town that she is “man enough” to be the sheriff. She is following in her grandfather’s footsteps, a man she loved deeply and misses terribly. When there is a murder and a robbery committed on the same, she has her hands full, but is determined to solve both cases. She gets help from Finn Vincent, an officer on loan from the State Reserve because Kenni is down one deputy due to retirement. The fact that he is handsome angers her because she finds herself attracted to him. But she refuses to let that fact distract her from solving the mysteries. Poppa, Kenni’s grandfather, was my favorite character and I can see why she misses him so much.

The author is very talented in creating the small town setting. Cottonwood, Kentucky, is full of busy bodies and quirky characters. Gossip runs wild and everybody wants to offer advice and know each other’s business. I think it would be a fun place to visit.

There are two mysteries to solve and they were carried on well throughout the book There are enough suspects, clues and twists and turns to keep the reader guessing. I was not positive who the culprit was until is was revealed, which is how I like it.

I would recommend this book to any reader who enjoys a well crafted cozy mystery. If you enjoy ghostly paranormal cozies, this is a must read book. I am hoping that this book is the start of a new series because I want to spend more time with Kenni and Poppa.

I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for a honest review. I would like to thank Netgalley and Henery Press for the opportunity to read and review this book.

I really enjoyed Fixin To Die the first book in the Kenni Lowry Mystery Series by Tonya Kappes. This book is full of small town southern charm. Tonya keeps you guessing with just enough red-herrings and plot twist. Kenni is a female Sheriff in a small town were crime has been next to nothing for the two years she has been sheriff. All of a sudden she has a murder and a jewelry store robbery to solve simultaneously and without a deputy. She enlist her jailer-Wyatt and the States Reserve Office-Finn in helping her solve these crimes. When she starts hearing voices she thinks she is going crazy only to find out it the ghost of her Poppa the former Sheriff. Kenni has to deal with nosy neighbors, town gossips, her parents, and little to now experience to solve these crimes. Being from a small town in the south I really found the country saying to be hilarious. I would definitely recommend this book.

Fixin' to Die by Tonya Kappes is the first Kerri Lowry Mystery book. Kenni Lowry is sheriff of Cottonwood, having taken over from her grandfather, the previous sheriff. She finds out that his ghost has been helping her to reduce the crime rate in the town. When the town doctor is murdered the same day as a jewellery robbery, Kenni enlists her grandfathers help. An interesting mystery which started out a bit slow although picked up at the end. It took a bit of time for Kenni to accept her grandfather's ghost, but once this occurred, the pace picked up and I enjoyed the book more.

Fixin To Die is the first book in a new series written by Tonya Kappes. If you want to know what living in a small town is like come to Cottonwood filled with gossips and busy bodies.
Kendrick Lowry has been the Sheriff of Cottonwood for the last two years. Her first murder and a jewelry store robbery occur all in the same day.
The characters are quirky and well developed in this fun paranormal ghost mystery. Suspects, clues and twists and turns to keep you guessing as you read.
I would recommend this book to cozy and paranormal readers.

Besides delighting me with her depiction of this small Kentucky town, Tonya Kappes kept me fully entertained with the mystery and the humor and the characters. And, of course, the hint of romance.

Sheriff Kenni Lowry is very dimensional – stronger than she feels she is, a little bit awkward, completely engaging and relatable. Finn is her hunky sidekick and I had a "big ole" grin on my face during one of the last scenes of the book. I am looking forward to seeing how the chemistry between them plays out in future books. The secondary characters are fun, too. Full of sass and small-town charm, they leap off the page and into your heart. Some of them you want to jerk a knot into; others you just want to hug. But they’re all entertaining and well-defined. I loved Poppa’s character, the ghost of Kenni’s grandfather (the former sheriff) who has been keeping the town free of crime since Kenni was elected sheriff. Except, you know, for the recent murder and jewelry store robbery. But other than that – zero crime rate, thanks to Poppa. He added a lot of heartwarming moments as well as humor to the story and to Kenni’s character.

Fixin to Die is a fantastic start to a new series! It’s cute and endearing, funny and sweet, and the mystery will keep you intrigued from start to finish. Quirky characters with lots of layers give the story a lot of its charm, and Tonya Kappes’ engaging writing style fills in the rest. If you love cozy mysteries and you love small southern towns, then Fixin to Die is fixin’ to be your next fave read.

Fixin’ to Die by Tonya Kappes is the first book in A Kenni Lowry Mystery series. I thought Fixin’ to Die was easy to read with a good flow. Kenni Lowry is an acquired taste. Her behavior is a wee bit over-the-top (especially in the first half of the story). Kenni goes around town doing her investigation and accusing the wrong people (angering the citizens and losing their cooperation). Kenni does not read the reports provided to her, question witnesses, or follow-up on forensic evidence (to make sure it arrived and was processed). Kenni is not used to crime, and this is an adjustment period for her (and the town’s citizens). I love Poppa, Kenni’s grandfather. I found him to be funny and entertaining. I hope the author will enhance his role in future novels in the series. There is a romantic element in the story. There is an attraction between Kenni and Finn (she certainly likes to ogle his physique). It will be interesting to see how it progresses. The author did include some outlandish characters like the philandering town mayor and the spoiled, pampered daughter of well-to-do parents. The cozy element is very prevalent in Fixin’ to Die. Kenni has a busy social life, likes to jog, has a dog, and enjoys a good card game. The mystery was good, but I thought it was a cinch to solve. I appreciated the paranormal element in the form of Poppa’s ghost. It greatly enhanced Fixin’ to Die. Overall, Fixin’ to Die is a good first start to the series. Fixin’ to Die is an entertaining Southern tale.

Fixin' To Die by Tonay Kappes is a fun and sassy cozy mystery with a touch of paranormal that kept me turning the pages.

All of the characters are fully developed with quirks, strengths and sass that are often found in many small southern towns. Kenni is smart, spunky and independent in spite of being a disappointment to her mother (which is a no-no in southern towns). I liked her and found her to be very relatable throughout the story. I also found Finn to be an intriguing character since he is a Yankee from Chicago which makes me wonder what he is now doing in Kentucky. I loved Kenni's Poppa! He makes a great guardian angel and partner.

A fast paced plot with plenty of twists to keep me guessing until I finally put a couple of clues together; but I wasn't sure until the reveal. All in all a very satisfying read; and I hope there will be more books in this series.

I received an ARC from Henery Press via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. My opinions in this review are strictly my own.

I recieved this book in exchange for an honest review. Tonya Kappes is not an author I am familiar with but i though why not. I wish I could give half stars. this is better then a four but not a five. I enjoyed this book start to finish. it was easy to read, easy to follow, and easy to lose myself in. This sherriff was a great character. I am normally not much of a ghost person but this all worked. I will definately reccomend this book to others.

FIXIN’ TO DIE is the laugh out loud first mystery featuring Sheriff Kenni Lowry. What a great start to a series!

Kenni was elected sheriff two years ago when her beloved Poppa, the town’s long standing sheriff, passed away. She is a department of one since her only deputy retired, which has been fine seeing as the Cottonwood, Kentucky’s, crime rate has been zero. Zero until Kenni gets the call that Doc Watson has been murdered. Not everyone thinks that she is up to the task, but she has local jailer Wyatt and Finn Vincent from the State Police Reserve Unit, ordained as her temporary deputies, to help get to the bottom of things. Kenni thinks the stress of the case is taking its toll when she hears her Poppa’s voice, but, sure enough, Poppa’s ghost is there to help. In fact, he has been deterring crime since Kenni took office, a fact that is now bringing her competency into question. Not everyone in town thinks she is up to the task, including her mother, but Kenni, with Finn and Poppa, unearths some juicy gossip and unmasks the killer.

I consider FIXIN’ TO DIE to be a cozy mystery, even though, as the sheriff, Kenni is not an amateur sleuth. However, this is her first case, and her inexperience, and training, show. There is a curse word or two, but nothing really objectionable. A lot of humor is sprinkled throughout the story, and I love the Southern small town atmosphere, quirky characters, touch of romance, and supernatural element. Honestly, at times I forget that Poppa is a ghost. His and Kenni’s bond is great, and I am reminded of my relationship with my own grandfather. Kappes writes in an easy, conversational style, and, thus, I feel like I am right there with Kenni solving crimes and making new friends. The mystery involving Doc Watson’s death and the jewelry store robbery is complex enough to be interesting, and there are plenty of twists and turns on the way to the climactic end. I confess that I suspected the killer’s identity but not his/her motive until it was revealed.

I enjoyed every minute of FIXIN’ TO DIE and recommend it highly to any cozy mystery fan.

Hmm. Can't quite decide about this book. Not sure why. The characters are reasonably well-drawn, and the small-town setting has potential. However, I just wasn't convinced that no-one would have realised the small-town doctor's dark secret, when he was so well known.

This mystery is a blast! Sheriff Kenni Lowry is one of my new favorite cozy mystery leading ladies. It has been a while since I read part of the series, so I am glad to finally read how Finn and Kenni met, and how he became a temporary sheriff’s deputy. Set in a charming Southern town based on the author’s Kentucky hometown, Fixin’ To Die introduces us to Kenni, her immediate family, and her friends. The characters are well-portrayed through conversations and behavior, and the mysteries kept me guessing throughout.

Kenni followed in her Poppa’s footsteps in law enforcement. When her beloved grandfather died, she ran for his office of sheriff. Despite her age and limited experience, she won. She had always spent time with Poppa, watching him in the courtroom and seeing him solve cases. Going to the police academy started a huge rift between Kenni and her mother; becoming sheriff almost destroyed their relationship.

There has been little crime during the first two years since Kenni became sheriff. That ended early one morning when the dispatcher sent her to Doc Walton’s place. Doc delivered her when she was born so she’s always known him. Now Doc was dead, obviously murdered. She asked Wyatt, the jailer and long-time helper in the department, to call the Kentucky Reserves to send someone to assist her. This is the first murder she will investigate, and her only deputy recently retired.

Finn, a reserve officer, arrived a short time later in a state-issued Charger and expensive clothing. He is one fine-looking man, and Kenni notices it every bit as much as the other women around Cottonwood. He arrived shortly before Kenni was sent to a crime scene at the local jewelers. Polly was filling in at White’s Jewelry while the owner, Viola, was home sick. When Polly arrived, the door was locked as usual, and there was no sign the shop was broken into. One of the cases, however, is smashed open and jewelry missing. There is an odd, spray-painted symbol on the floor.

The coroner told Kenni that Doc was murdered in an unusual manner. He had a symbol drawn on his wrist that matches the one at the jewelry store and some very odd wounds. Overwhelmed, Kenni went to the cemetery to talk with Poppa’s stone again, wishing he could be there to talk the cases over with. Little did she know how her life would change with that request. Kenni began to hear a voice, then Poppa materialized before her eyes. Convinced she’s going crazy, she tried hard to ignore him. It’s a mixed blessing that only Kenni and her dog, Duke, can see him. When people catch her talking with someone, she tells them that she thinks better when she talks a situation through out loud.

Because of the symbols, it looks like the murder and huge jewel robbery are related. It is hard to imagine anyone would kill Dr. Walton, as he never seemed to have any enemies, much less rob the jewelry store the same day. The mystery itself is very well written. Whodunit was quite a surprise! Finn and Kenni work together very well, and almost everyone sees the chemistry between them. The mystery is tied up well with no loose ends. I highly recommend this to those who appreciate well-written cozy mysteries, Southern charm and snark, and a town that I would surely love to spend some time in.

From a thankful heart: I received a complimentary copy of this novel, and this is my honest review.

Dollycas’s Thoughts
This story remind me a bit of J.J. Cook’s Sweet Pepper Fire Brigade Mysteries and Sharon Pape’s Portrait of Crime Mysteries. Sheriff Kenni Lowry has been sheriff in Cottonwood, Kentucky since she was elected to fill her grandfather’s seat after he passed away. She learned that since she took over his ghost has been scaring criminals away so there was virtually no crime in the town at all. When the doctor that has taken care of the town forever is murdered, the ghost makes himself known to help her solve the case and grow her confidence.

I hear you strict cozy fans saying a sheriff is not an amateur sleuth, but in this case, this is her first homicide and she is a bit out of her depth. Cottonwood is a small town with a super small police force, think, Andy Griffith in Mayberry. She does bring in some experience in Finn Vincent for the Kentucky Reserve. Many in the town and even Kenni’s own mother think she is basically playing a game being sheriff. She needs to prove she is up to the job.

Kenni Lowry is smart and fun and knows how things work in her small town, like the gossip mill. She also know how to handle the varied personalities of the residents. I am sure she will be more confident in the next story. Poppa, her grandfather, must have been a wonderful man when he was alive and still is in his ghostly form. They relationship is so strong and loving. I really liked Finn. Together the 3 of them make a great Crime solving team. Kenni and Finn may make a great team in another way too.

Tonya Kappes have filled her story with the requisite quirky characters and wonderful Southern charm with plenty of humor. The mystery plot contains many twists and turns. I did have a theory of who was responsible for the recent crime wave and this time I was actually right.

Sheriff Kendrick (Kenni) Lowry, grandaughter of the late sheriff Elmer Sims, was elected sherriff two years earlier. Now that her deputy has retired she works alone. This is not usually a problem as there has been almost no crime in her two years in office until now. There is a murder and a break-in in just one day. The town must call in someone to help. Finn Vincent arrives from the Kentucky State Reserve. Kenni also asks Wyatt, the jailer, to also be part of the investigation. The stress seems to have gotten to Kenni as she begins hearing things.

I enjoyed this book a lot. I laughed out loud at the colloquial sayings used in the story as well as the down home southern expectations, especially Kenni's mother who wants her to get married and settle down with a good man and have children. The way the other characters in the story was well done. There were many townsfolk but they were introduced relatively gradually with enough information to get to know them. Kenni and Finn work perfectly together. I loved their chemistry and could not help but laugh when he schmoozed all the other ladies in the book. young and old. I had no idea who the murderer was which always makes for a good mystery in my mind. Usually in a cozy mystery, the protagonist is an amateur sleuth and this one is actually the sheriff, but as she is relatively new to the role and all the other aspects of a cozy mystery are there, it definitely fits the genre. I am already reading the second one in the series.

Fixin to Die is the first book in the Kenni Lowry Mystery series by USA Today bestselling author Tonya Kappes. I would love to live in Cottonwood, Kentucky. It’s a small town that hasn’t had any crime in the past 2 years. Unfortunately for the Sheriff of Cottonwood, Kendrick Kenni) Lowry, Dr. Walton is murdered and White's Jewelry store is robbed both events occurring on the same day. Given Cottonwood has been essentially crime free, there is no deputy to assist Kenni so Finn Vincent with the Kentucky State Reserve, is called in to help. Kenni, also, asks Wyatt, the town jailer to assist in the investigation. Something gotten to Kenni as she starts hearing things. The voices she is hearing turn out to be something she never expected. I was enthralled with Poppa’s character, the ghost of Kenni’s grandfather, who just happens to be the former sheriff, who kept the town crime free since Kenni was elected sheriff.

Tonya Kappes has perfectly blended well developed characters, small town charm, a tightly woven plot with intertwined subplots, mystery and a pinch of romance and paranormal fun. Fixin to Die is a fun cozy mystery with a touch of paranormal that kept me turning the pages. This a very enjoyable book and I’m happy that there will be more books in this series. I recommend this book to cozy and paranormal readers. You won’t be disappointed.

Sheriff Kenni Lowry's day goes from bad to worse when she has her first murder in two years on the job followed by a jewelry store robbery right afterward. Kenni has had a fairly calm job until now and she goes to her Poppa's grave to talk over her fears about her ability to solve the murder. Her talk apparently does something because shortly after, her grandfather makes an appearance. He lets her know he has been watching out for her and now he's here to help.
Kenni also has a reserve officer named Finn who has come to help with the murder and he's mighty attractive. Between Finn and her grandfather, several nosy townspeople, and her not very supportive parents, Kenni's all over the place solving the crime. Kenni has to worry about the next election and the impact these cases will have on her job prospects.
I loved the small town quirkiness and the speed of the local rumor mill. Kenni is worried but she is much more competent than she realizes. The resolution of the crimes and the underlying reasons are cleverly revealed with a big surprise at the end. I can't wait to see what is next in store for Kenni and the town of Cottonwood.

In Fixin' to Die by Tonya Kappes, Kendrick Lowry has been sheriff of Cottonwood, Kentucky for the two years since her Poppa passed away and vacated that position after many years serving as sheriff. The crime rate has been practically zero until one morning when Kenni gets a call that the locally beloved Doc Walton has been murdered. Arriving, Kenni learns that Doc has been stabbed numerous times, but beads of mercury from the old style thermometer that Doc has always used are embedded in his mustache and in his mouth. With no deputy, the town calls in the assistance of a State Reserve officer. Just as the pair get started investigating, they get a call that the local jewelry store has been robbed. And painted on the wall is the same symbol written in ink on Doc's arm, indicating some connection between the two crimes. But something more startling happens soon. As soon as Kenni gets alone, a ghost pops up, the ghost of her Poppa!

Another great new series from Tonya Kappes

This book is the first in a new series and you will be hanging on to your seat from the beginning. I received this book in exchange for an honest review.

Kenni is the sheriff in a small southern town. She is following in her deceased grandfather’s footsteps. Things were going great in the first two years, zero crime. Then, there’s a murder and a jewelry store robbery in the same day. She has learned how to investigate at the police academy, but doing it in real-life is another thing. Along comes a hunky member of the state police reserve and her grandfather’s ghost to help her along.

Good southern humor from the town’s colorful residents and good solid mystery until the very end. You won’t figure this one out early. I would highly recommend Fixin’ to Die by Tonya Kappes!

I received an advanced copy for my honest review, that said, I have also pre-ordered this book...This is a great read! Now, I will not give you any spoilers for this book, with that, Sheriff Kenni Lowry has not had any major crime to deal with since she took her position in the small town of Cottonwood, where gossip runs freely and everyone wants to put their two-cents worth in, until she received a call that Dr. Walton was found dead. There are people who would love to see her fail, however, she receives help from her Poppa, former sheriff of this town, who passed away and Finn, a Kentucky Reserve Officer. There are twists and turns that keep you guessing and you will fall in love in with these characters!

I have read Tonya Kappes’ other series and she has not disappointment me as reader of the mystery and paranormal stories.

Fixin to Die is a great start to Tonya Kappes’ new series about Sheriff Kenni Lowry of Cottonwood, KY. Tonya’s writing jumps you right in to the mystery and follow the plot twists to solve the first murder since Kenni has been elected Sheriff. The town comes to life with the quirky characters and the nosiness of a small town life. Throw in the ghost of the former Sheriff and grandfather of Kenni for flair of the paranormal and then there’s handsome, single Deputy Finn to make this an enjoyable read. I can’t wait until the next installment to learn more about Finn Vincent and what holds Poppa to watch over Kenni.

Now wait just one cotton pickin' minute! Are you tellin' me you haven't read this first book in the Kenni Lowry series by Tonya Kappes?? Well, butter my buns and call me a biscuit! You better get your fanny in gear and read it! It's funny, kooky, and the mystery is tricky as all get out!
This book is an exciting start to a new series! The author expertly paints a picture of a small southern town and the characters vivid and entertaining. The reader is engaged from the first page and I wanted to read this book as fast as possible so I could get to the 2nd book in the series! Trust me, it will make you grin like a possum eatin' a sweet tater!!

I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book.

I loved this fun quirky, paranormal, totally southern mystery. Kenni Lowry is the sheriff of Cottonwood, Ky. and after two years with no crime she finds herself with a murder and a robbery all in the same day. I like Kappes' strong, independent women characters in her books and the way that she makes them so relatable. The townspeople are all quirky and some quite annoying just like a real southern town. I loved the paranormal element with her Poppa the former sheriff and the hunky Kentucky Reserve officer. A fun, quick read. I am looking forward to book #2 in this series.

I have always said that Tonya always keeps me guessing until the very end. This book was no different. Kenni Lowry is the sheriff in Cottonwood, KY, for 2 years there's been no crimes, now there's a murder and robbery. Who did it, are they connected? Is there a vampire in Cottonwood?

Kenni gets some special help to solve these crimes, I don't want to spoil it for you... But I could only wish that this could happen for me.

Spring - Kentucky

Kenni is the sheriff now that her grandfather is dead. He comes back as a ghost to help her solve crimes. I didn't know that was going to happen. I should have read what this was about before I started reading this. Finn is the new deputy. The two have a possible romance in the works. The mystery is about murder, theft, and a movie. They are all connected, but not in the way I thought they would be. Most of the story is spent getting the know the townspeople.
