This 48 page book is part of the STEM in the Real World series. It gives as basic introduction to what computer science is, the history of computer science, careers in computer science, and the future of computer science. There are a few primary source document excerpts, fast facts, a glossary and index, and some suggestions for additional resources regarding this topic. There are full color photographs that display gender equity but not racial diversity.
Other books in the series include: Bioengineering, Mathematics, Physics, and Astronomy.

This title is one of the “STEM in the Real World” series and its subject is computer science. Four chapters give intermediate readers adequate information on the history of computers, their evolution over the years, the possibilities they hold for the future and the many careers associated with computer science. From the earliest computers to AI and the Internet of Things to quantum computing, straightforward text provides basic information on the construction and components of computers and smart devices. The easy-to-read narrative provides opportunities to search for additional information through guided online and writing activities. Charts, photographs, fact boxes and primary source content add to readers’ understanding of the well-researched text. Back matter includes a Fast Facts spread, a Stop and Think spread with extension activities, glossary, bibliography, publisher’s websites and index. With its emphasis on Common Core Standards and the numerous prompts and activities to promote critical thinking, the title is a good resource for beginning research on computer science. This volume in the STEM in the Real World series focuses on Computer science. The four chapters cover computers in the real world, the history of computers, computer careers, and the future of computers, as well as sections of fast facts, stop and think, a glossary, learn more, and index. Each chapter or section deals adequately with the topic. Each chapter concludes with a short quiz on the chapter and additional facts to discover. Contemporary pictures illustrate the career paths available. This volume as well as the other titles would be a great additional to the library.
