I gave this book a three which I consider an above average rating. It is well written, professional with a definite plot and ideas to consider. A thoughtful examination of moral and ethical standards in a military situation which demands a black and white interpretation of everything. The plot is plausible at the outside edge of reality. There is some stereotypical characters but that may be true of almost all fiction, not every character can be developed. The main characters in this story evolve over the course of the story. Pearl doesn't take an easy way out at the end but it fits the situation.
