Spooning Daisy

Rate this book
It's a long way from Seattle to Otter Bite, Alaska. But if one woman can survive the trip--and the locals--she just might find what her heart has been searching for.

Her mango chutney is exquisite; her blueberry sauce is to die for. But right now, Chef de Cuisine Daisy Moon is a woman without a kitchen--and without a fiancé. Unceremoniously dumped from her place of business and her relationship, Daisy sells her belongings, plus a few of her ex's, and packs her bags. Maybe smashing all the china in her former restaurant was a bad move. Stripped of her Golden Spoon for "un-chef-like" conduct, she is now blacklisted all over Seattle. Her sole job offer is from the Wild Man Lodge…in Otter Bite, Alaska.

Too bad Daisy can't even get out of Dodge without incident. By the time she boards a ship for Alaska, she's got a trail of new troubles behind her, and suddenly Otter Bite is sounding pretty good. But the vessel turns into her own personal Titanic when a series of close encounters confirms her terrible taste in men--including one very good looking bad luck charm named Max Kendall. She vows to dedicate the rest of her days to chowders and brulée. Yet even Alaska isn't far enough away to shake the memories of the sexy shipmate who rocked her cabin--and her world. Thank goodness she's done with surprises--but they may not be done with her…

Favorite Quotes:

Who could've predicted that only weeks after Jason had replaced his reliable television with a sleeker state-of-the-art model, he'd do the same with his fiancée?

Daisy caught her reflection in the small mirror. And oh, how she wish she hadn't. She and tears had never gotten along; even happy tears turned her face into a puffy, splotchy mess sure to cause nightmares among young children.

Moments like this don't come around all that often. Don't throw it away because you're afraid it won't come again.

My Review:

Daisy and Max were a bit hard for me to warm up to, both were exceptionally quirky yet neither one was immediately likable as both were rather manipulative, critical, opinionated, and perpetually petty or cranky. Daisy was also vindictive, OCD, full of malice, and had a hot temper to match her fiery red hair. Max was an obvious player and more than a bit of a douche. The couple shared a mutual attraction and explosive chemistry, but their timing was cursed and out of sync - and they could never seem to catch up. They verbally sparred and shredded each other like seasoned gladiators; their rapid-fire banter was clever, humorous, snarky, and highly entertaining. They rubbed each other the right way and then the wrong way, and just couldn't seem to get out of their own way with one amusing misadventure after another. Although among the temper-tantrums and humor, there were also heart squeezes and painful truths. I relished how the story come together, Ms. McConnell prepped the surprise reveal with clever underpinnings.

A great, and quirky, contemporary romance!

The storyline of Spooning Daisy is so unique, which was an awesomely refreshing treat for a jaded book-blogger such as myself ;) Parts of it just sucked me right in and, before I knew it, an hour had passed and I wasn't ready to put the book down!

That being said, there were some parts that involved, let's just say, atypical "romance hero" behavior. But the chuckles I got throughout and the wonderful ending were well worth the scoffs I gave Max in the beginning.

All in all, I really enjoyed this story and its myriad of characters, and I otter be excited about the next Otter Bite novel!

If you are looking for a romantic comedy that has a mixture of wit, humor and romance, then look no further, Spooning Daisy is the book for you.

In Spooning Daisy, the first book in the Otter Bite Romance Series, author Maggie McConnell weaves a delightfully lighthearted tale set in Otter Bite, Alaska, that follows the unexpected romantic relationship between chef Daisy Moon and Wild Man Lodge owner Max Kendall. Daisy and Max meet at her garage sale in Seattle, where she is getting rid of her ex-fiance's belongings before she starts a new life in Otter Bite, Alaska. But their unexpected meeting leads to more unexpected meetings and hilarious trials and tribulations that follows Daisy and Max from Seattle to Alaska. Along the way, Daisy and Max need to overcome obstacles and mishaps in order to find a common ground that will lead them to a happily ever after ending.

Spooning Daisy is an entertaining romantic comedy that will keep the reader in stitches. You can't help but follow Daisy and Max's story as their relationship is full of serendipitous encounters and hilarious misadventures, and cheer them on as they seek common ground and a lasting love.

With a quirky cast of characters, witty dialogue and humorous / dramatic interactions, and a richly vivid description of Otter Bite, Alaska, Spooning Daisy is a witty tale that is full of sass and charm, it's tongue-in-cheek humor will keep the reader in stitches, thoroughly engaged, and smiling to the very end.

Spooning Daisy is simply rom-com at its very best!

I had such high hopes for this book and its strange yet intriguing title. It sounded quirky and funny and the beginning certainly started off well. It’s just that Daisy is pretty unlikeable at times and Max is a complete man-whore. If you don’t like your romances with your hero sleeping with someone else after he’s already slept with the heroine then steer well clear.

The overall premise is kind of fun, with Daisy having a rough time and falling into scrape after scrape, often with Max hanging around, so they both come to view each other as a bad luck charm, and yet there’s an unwanted attraction between them. Really unwanted. Seriously, Max goes out of his way to prove himself to be a dick, flirting with other women while waiting for his date with Daisy, eyeing up other women while they’re sharing a meal, sleeping with another woman after running out of Daisy’s bed. Not just once, and feeling remorse, nope, two condoms are definitely mentioned.

Yeah, yeah, towards the end he reveals all these heroic qualities, but to be honest it was too little too late. The whole suing issue was basic nastiness (if he needed the money, go for the guy that hit him who also owns a highly successful restaurant) and I hated the disrespectful way he treated Daisy long before they slept together and all that came after. He has zero respect for her afterwards either, and to be honest I couldn’t work out what the hell they saw in each other.

As for Daisy, damn, she’s hard work. So much happens to her that I wanted to be sympathetic, I really did, but for someone who shares her life story at the drop of a hat, she’s weirdly untrusting and always jumps to the worst conclusions. Her accusation towards Max was plain stupid, her snooping was embarrassing and her prickliness got on my nerves. I would have loved to have actually seen her at work in the kitchen at some point, but no, mostly we get annoying Daisy doing annoying things, while Max either barges around in testosterone mode or mopes like an idiot.

I did, however, cheer Daisy on after the wood incident. Ha! Totally deserved. I also loved some of the other characters – Rita especially – and Elizabeth is just wonderful.

It’s not all bad, and it is pretty funny throughout, I just also found it annoying and not particularly romantic or what I was hoping for. If you want something funny and easy, and you don’t mind a hero who has a lot of ground to make up and a heroine who has a lot of maturing to do, then give this a go. I hope you enjoy it more than I did.

This book is not what I was expecting. Nope, not all. The tropes are there for me; boss/employee, enemies to lovers (?), and opposites attract but at times I felt like the romance wasn’t there. Don’t get me wrong, I loved Daisy and Max in spades but at times, their romance seemed a little off to me. The comedy is there. The tragic comedy, oh my, is in spades, too. But I felt like the ending is a bit rushed. I would have liked a more solid ending to their romance.

Let me explain…when I read opposites attract or for that matter, an enemies to lovers story, I expect some romance from them. Now, the scenes on the ferry, at least to me, are the true romance parts of the books. This is where Max and Daisy get to know each other and its enduring. Daisy has got some quirks. Like some serious quirks but Max isn’t without his, too. But we don’t get see his until later. True that Max does something that I almost couldn’t forgive him for and for awhile Daisy doesn’t. I loved that she really gave it to him afterward but in the end, Max truly did romance Daisy on the boat.

The tragedies that Daisy had to endure were almost too much. The garage sale and bar scene were PERFECT. I loved that not only was her ex-involved but his new girlfriend, too. Which happened to be Max’s ex-flavor of the month. The dialogue between the four of them is priceless and unfortunately, it doesn’t end well for Max or Daisy. Or when she thought Elizabeth as on a plane. Honestly, my heart was in my throat during that. And yes, I won’t tell you about Elizabeth and I loved her. Again, I expected something else. Nice touch, Ms. McConnell.

Charity, Rita, and Maeve are great secondary characters. They rounded out Max and Daisy when they were having problems with one another. Otter Bite is a character within itself. I can’t wait to get to know it better in future books. I would be totally remiss if I didn’t mention the inn that Max owns. Wow…once it is revealed to the extent of what the inn means to Max and his guests, I was totally blown away. I just wish I knew about it sooner. I felt like if Daisy knew about it, her feelings would have changed sooner, too.

Overall, I loved Daisy and Max. The book flowed really well and the sex is off the page. Oh, we get the build up but then fade to black. This story didn’t need it. Daisy and Max had some major “growing up” to do in the book for it to work out for them in the end. Daisy especially with all of her quirks and the robbery. Do yourself a favor and pick this one up. You won’t be sorry.

Three stars!
The start of this story was strong. I liked how Daisy and Max met and the crazy circumstances of their first almost-but-not date. Daisy very quickly got on my nerves and Max gave me the creeps at times. They both had some redeeming qualities about them that I hoped would be expanded on as the story progressed. Sadly that never really happened. Daisy was quick to dismiss all personal responsibility for pretty much everything throughout the story. Yes, she did have a few things happen to her that were out of her control. However she still needed to own up to her choices and the path it put her on. Even through the end, she never really thought she did much of anything wrong. Max was a self centered playboy and it was creepy and gross for a while. He developed more the further you get in the story and I wound up liking him marginally by the end of the book. One of my biggest issues with the story was the non stop games these two played with each other. The sneaking, backstabbing, trying to outsmart and outdo each other was over the top. It was hard to get invested in them as a couple when all they did was try to tear the other down for the majority of the book. Sure, they both kept saying they were attracted to the other. But I didn’t feel any of the emotions in the book or the love they professed to each other. It felt wooden and fake. I liked Max’s purpose behind Wild Man Lodge. However it was totally overshadowed and got tainted. Max could have used what was really going on to show his side and how he wasn’t as bad as Daisy thought. Instead he wanted to let Daisy prove how horrible she is by jumping to a logical conclusion based on limited evidence given. The ending is kind of cute in how they come together again. However, it was a bit over the top and gushy when I couldn’t see them truly feeling and acting that way towards each other. Some of the side characters had potential and I truly enjoyed them and got engaged in their parts of the story.

This was my first book by author Maggie McConnell and I loved every minute of it. The characters were realistic and relatable; Daisy & her obsessive compulsive behaviors and controlling natures really resonated with me. I loved how the author delved into her thought processes making Daisy seem like someone I could be friends with. The chemistry she has with Max is off the charts but they clearly have a love-hate relationship. Max appears on the surface like a man who is set in his ways and only wants things to be his way, when in reality we discover that he is so much more than what meets the eye. There were multiple moments where I did not think they were going to end up being together because of one miscommunication or another - which helps make their characters believable and realistic.

The way the author wrote this story captivated me from page 1 and held my attention the entire time I was reading. It was one of those books that once I started I was so engrossed in Max & Daisy's lives that I didn't even realize I had been reading for a few hours. I would definitely describe this book as a RomCom because I laughed and I swooned. I loved how Daisy & Max grew together over the course of the book; I just enjoyed everything about this book.

Independent Reviewer for Archaeolibrarian - I Dig Good Books!

This was such a sweet little surprise of a read. Humor, romance, wit and charm, who could ask for more.

The story line was great. It was full of surprises, hilarity, and some serious frustration. Max was the most frustrating of a character but also one that you couldn’t forget if you tried. His character kept me reading. I had how his character grew and blossomed, if he even did. He is a character you’ll love to hate, for sure.

Details and descriptions were spot on. The descriptions of the scenery definitely made me want to visit Alaska and see the scenery and the sights. I enjoy cold weather so this was just a little extra push to make me want to visit. The details made it incredibly easy to keep reading, to understand what was happening and the surroundings. These items made the story flow from page to page flawlessly.

I certainly enjoyed this story. It was an easy read, provided an entering and fun read, and allowed me to escape reality for a few hours.

Did Not Finish

DNF @ 38%

I did not finish this book, and will not be officially reviewing it. I loved the idea of the story, as I love books set in Alaska and aboard vessels, but this book was all over the place for me. It starts out with a rather unbelievable encounter in a bar between Max and Daisy, and Daisy's ex and current fling. Things turn violent and people are hurt. But Max decides to sue Daisy over it?? And then they randomly encounter one another on the ferry and she willingly lets him share her cabin and then BAM they sleep together? I don't understand doing these things for and with a man who is suing you for something that's not your fault and that you actually despise. I really don't like Daisy, and I pretty much hate Max for flirting with a busty blonde while on a date with Daisy. He's also super cocky and sounds like a major playboy. There's just nothing good about this book for me at all.

I was given this book for free in exchange for an honest review.

Daisy is downsizing after a bad breakup, and holding a garage sale seems like the best way to get rid of her ex's stuff. Max attends her garage sale with his mother, and thanks to his mom's matchmaking, ends up going on a date with Daisy.

The date is a disaster, the latest event in the string of bad luck that has been Daisy's life for the last year. She is ready for a fresh start, and when she gets a job offer in Alaska, she grabs it. Unfortunately, though, her string of bad luck follows her in ways she never could have imagined.

On her travels, she ends up running into Max again...and again...and again. They can't seem to escape each other, no matter what they do!

I thought this book was funny, quirky, and a good read. I would give it 4 stars.

What a pleasant surprise! I liked the blurb outlining the story but really wasn't sure what the book would be like, but I was chuckling along to myself right from the very beginning, I love the style of writing, so easy and amusing.

Daisy has been ditched by her fiancee, who now has another fiancee already, lost her place in the restaurant they both ran as he sacked her and a judge upheld it in court, even though she'd put in all blood, sweat and tears in their restaurant, and ostracized by the restaurant community because she dared to have a bit of a tantrum about it all, I think she was totally justified! So she accepts an offer in Alaska at Wild Man Lodge, a complete change of lifestyle.

During her garage sale to get rid of all her, and the ex's items, she bumps into Max escorting his Mum around a few garage sales, and both of them are pushed into going on a date that evening. Unfortunately during the date they bump into her (very drunk) ex with his new fiancee, who it turns out Max had dated, and a brawl ensues leaving them all the worse for wear, especially Max who ends up with a cast on his leg and a concussion. Then on her way to Alaska and her new job who does Daisy bump into again on the ferry but Max!

The story continues with chaos everywhere Daisy goes - she gets robbed (money/car/all her belongings) / steals Max's passport and forgets to put it back / ends up sharing her cabin with him in exchange for a lift, but as he had been ogling someone else at the time and tuning her out he didn't hear half the conversation and then just agreed at the end in the hope that it was right. They end up spending the night together but two seconds later he's in bed with 'Olga', which really put me off him for a while. Daisy finds out and even though they aren't a couple she decides she's had enough and leaves the ferry and gets a plane to her final destination, without mentioning it to Max.

Of course she soon finds out that the owner of Wild Man Lodge, and her new employer, is none other than Max. The usual chaos ensues throughout most of the rest of the book, she's just draws trouble! Daisy was just a ditzy hothead who I really liked, Max I had a bit of a love/hate relationship with, but I warmed to him as the story went along. And I loved Elizabeth the turtle!

I can certainly say this book was never boring and I really enjoyed all the shenanigans - very amusing! I really enjoyed the story, and the setting, and look forward to returning to Otter Bite in the next book.

Just recently I was commiserating with another reader over the fact that romantic comedy author Jennifer Crusie hadn’t penned a book in years and how unfortunately there were very few writers who were capable of writing intelligent, quirky romantic comedies.

Enter Spooning Daisy by Maggie McConnell. From the pun in the title to the fast-paced dialogue to the different and compelling storytelling, I was captured and captivated.

DNF Books

I read the blurb and loved it, I was ready for a great read. I find it very hard to get into, it was very slow pace. I do however like Daisy, she has a unique quirkiness to her. Max, I'm not sure how to take him.

It didn't pick up till I reached 50%.

I'm skimmed read till she got to her chef job. As I continued to keep reading Max becomes a complete asshole, there's is nothing redeeming about him at all. He's not charming, likable or anything. For me to enjoy a story I need to like the couple only liking one-half makes it difficult to get into the story.

I kept skim reading and I couldn't go any further with the book.

Oh I really enjoyed reading this book! I posted a showcase for this book a while back but didn't have the time to read it than. Boy am I glad I finally did read it!

This was exactly the type of book I love to read. It was a lot of fun and holy cow can that girl get herself into some trouble without even trying! I loved Daisy with all her quirkiness. I love characters like this - unique, fun, never a dull moment. I loved her aversion to sleeping on other people's sheets. I loved her non-stop talking. I loved her turtle, Elizabeth (I had two turtles! For years they were my pets and I used to let them walk around my apt. just like Daisy did - awww).

Max, I wasn't so sure about. He did end up redeeming himself in the end but the whole way through I was so unsure about him, he just wasn't winning my heart. I'm pretty sure that was the author's plan all along though - so job well done!

Yes this book is a chick-lit style romance, which I love. But it's also speckled with these beautiful detailed descriptions of the Alaskan wilderness, which I also loved. I felt like I was right there.
This story is funny at times, and a lot of crap happens, it's kind of typical romantic comedy stuff. But, also very endearing, an absolute delight to read!

I am thinking that since it is "An Otter Bite Romance" there are more??? If so, I definitely would like to read them!

I voluntarily posted this review after receiving a copy of this book from the Author - Thank You!

Daisy has the worst luck of anyone ever and she'll blame everyone, but herself. There's always a reason for her actions and never in million years would she ever consider that maybe she overreacted in certain situations, which caused them to go from bad to worse.  She is also one stubbornly determined woman who won't back down. Underneath all of that, she's actually pretty sweet.

No matter how hard he wishes for it not to be true Max's path keeps crossing Daisy's. At first she's like a plague he can't escape, but after a while he realized that maybe he doesn't want to escape. She challenges him as much as she infuriates him leaving him baffled by how much he starts enjoy it.

Fate has a plan and if it doesn't succeed it'll try again and again until it gets it right. In Spooning Daisy if two paths cross enough eventually they'll realize it's meant to be.

This book is slow paced. I felt like I was reading forever and nothing really exciting would happen, just little things here and there. I enjoyed where the story lead, but the journey getting there was long and drawn-out. Max's mother and Daisy's best friend added a little much needed humor and the people of Otter Bite added a heartwarming sentiment.

"The odds are good, but the goods are odd." ~That quote pretty much sums up the entire book for me.

The sweet-simple front cover of this book hardly does justice to the multi-faceted characters, setting, and plot that intertwine on its pages. Daisy and Max grew on me as I got to know them, with their unique skills and talents, their captivating personalities, and their all-too-human foibles. I found myself caught up in their inescapable, off-and-on dance with its surprising twists and turns. I felt their highs and lows, from hilarious to dismaying to breathtakingly sexy--until a perfect ending finally came. Go to Daisy’s yard sale in the first chapter, then take the ferry ride to Otter Bite and hang on for the tantalizing adventure. You’ll stay immersed in this smart, sleek, sophisticated romance and be sorry when it ends.

This was a fun entertaining read that had me chuckling throughout the story. The writing was excellent and very descriptive. The author made the beautiful Alaskan setting come to life for me. The characters were all great. Daisy, Charity, and Rita were a lively trio and kept the pace of the story brisk. Then there was the mysterious Max. He seems to turn up everywhere and then when it turns out he's her new boss, things really get hilarious. This is a wonderful read as you get to go along with Daisy as she bumbles her way to a new life! I would recommend this one.

One note - if one of your triggers is the H sleeping with OW - stay clear!

Daisy is great, Charity is great, Rita is terrific= and Max is the sort of mysterious romantic hero you expect in this sort of novel. Spooning Daisy is well written and a page turner. Loved the Alaskan setting (especially liked the ferry ;) and Daisy's devotion to her unusual pet. My quibble comes from some of Daisy's behavior such as stealing, slapping, and generally behaving like a snot in some parts. Neither of these two is a dummy (witness their discussion about who's who) nor is Rita with her word of the day. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC_ you will most likely enjoy this quick happy romantic novel.

My reading genre is not typically romance, but since the story took place in Alaska I was curious. McConnell's description of Kachemak Bay was right on, to include the local culture. Being an Alaskan resident I was pleased she depicted the area as it really is. Her humor, wit and character development was wonderful and very entertaining. I loved the twists in her plots which kept me reading, to see what was going to happen next. Can't wait to read "Embracing Felicity". Cudo's for a not so stereotypical romance. Marcy

I really enjoyed reading this book. I thought the characters were likable and interesting and you found out more and more about them as the story progresses. It is set in a small town in Alaska and the description of Otter Bite and it's surrounding towns will make you want to immediately book a ticket to Alaska. I thought the story really moved and I couldn't stop reading it. It is a perfect love story with just the right amount of intrigue to keep you reading each chapter. I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a sweet story in this genre.

Cute read about finding love when life seems against you. Daisy has had some setbacks & is moving to Otter Bite Alaska to start over. Once there she finds the man in charge, Max, is someone that she has had a bad encounter with & life gets even more crazy for her.

I love the way the story ends...... Max's mom gets the couple back together in the most fun way.
