The tranquillity of a tight-knit neighbourhood in Victorian Toronto is shattered when a young girl becomes the next victim in a string of robberies, missing persons and murder. Why is her father acting so strangely? Could he somehow be involved? Are the two murders and the disappearance of a neighbour connected?
Detective Albert Hodgins travels east to Kingston and north to the tiny hamlet of Pine Grove looking for answers. The trail eventually leads to New York and a rather rough NY Captain whose methods are almost deadly. Hodgins frantically tries to piece everything together so the person responsible can pay for his, or her, crime.

Love a good mystery Detective Albert Hodgins has his work cut out for him when his case load starts piling up with robberies, missing persons, and the brutal murder of a young lady from around his area. He is assisted by Constable Barnes who is proving to be an excellent right-hand man. Set in Victorian Toronto and surrounding area, it is obvious that Pattenden has done her research of the time and location, and of the laws and practices of that time. Her writing is clear, her transitions flow, and her characters are engaging. While I’m a reader who likes a gory mystery, filled with descriptions of blood, psychotic killers and maimed bodies, I found that stepping into a more ‘cozy’ mystery was refreshing. Looks like I’m going to be reading the other five in this series... but only when I need a break from the evil and malevolence of the books I love. Brava, Nanci Pattenden.
Engaging characters, Interesting story..Easy read! It had me guessing on who the Murder was! I hope in the books to come his wife will help him with his investigating. They would make a good team. What I truly enjoyed was how kind and thoughtful the sheriff was to his family. You don’t find that to often in Victorian Murder Mystery’s. Next Up, Book Two!!
Detective Hodgins with help from Constable Barnes have a couple of mysteries to solve. A young girl is murdered and so is a man. They have to figure out of they are connected. Police methods were a bit brutal in Victorian times. I did enjoy this book though.
All in all, this is an enjoyable mystery and police procedural that takes place in Victorian Toronto. The sense of time and place are nicely done. Given that the book takes place during a hot, sweltering Toronto summer, this strikes me as a good book to read while sitting outside on a hot day.
