More of the same. I could end the review with just that.

Usually if I began a review with those two sentences, it is likely I was posting a negative one. Not so here. Right now especially I needed a somewhat stupid and cute comedy. Tomo-Chan delivered.

Not much in terms of a plot advance in this volume, as is typical with this style of manga. A few new characters are introduced (or at least given a spotlight if they showed up before). The highlight of this volume would be Tomo's mom and dad. Any time they show up it is guaranteed a laugh from me.

The art is slightly improved in this volume. Characters look a little more natural and there seems to be a little more background work this time around. Facial expressions continue to be the highlight as the artist is great at capturing comedic reactions.

Gundou continues to be the best character and is one of the few given more depth here. Everyone else is pretty much the same. I don't mean that as a negative though. For some reason I like all these characters.

In closing: Did you like the first volume? Your opinion will likely stay the same. Personally I find that I continue to love this series, as though it may not have grown much, it remains consistently amusing and charming.

First book down for the challenge of reading a book in the same spot!

I am starting to really enjoy this series. I enjoy a good story about love misdirections. The characters are also starting to grow on me a bit more.

All I can say is that Carol is the first big-boobed bimbo from a seinen manga that I came to love so much. She's so freaking cute!! I wish for a day that Gundou will finally feel at ease whenever Carol glomps her. I honestly feel hurt whenever Gundou is acting sadistic towards her.

All. Buttons. Pushed.

I'm officially in love with this series, my favorite romantic comedy since My Love Story!!, Vol. 1. I was already rooting for the delightful Tomo and less oblivious Jun, but now we are introduced to Tomo's parents and they are simply adorable. Hell, the whole supporting cast just works for me.

And then to have Tomo and Jun each have to stand up to some bullies . . .

I'm melting.

Is Jun more of an idiot than Tomo? The young man is certainly making the case for himself. Any thought or behavior espousing the smallest hint of emotional availability is severed from this poor kid's life. Fortunately for readers, Junichiro Kubota is too inefficient and oblivious to successfully outmaneuver the tides of fortune. In TOMO-CHAN IS A GIRL! #2, Tomo gets a little closer to her beau, while Misuzu and Carol gain much-needed clarity into what it means to be a good (better? best?) friend.

This volume focuses a little more on Jun's capacity (or lack thereof) to reliably snag Tomo's attention. He obviously has feelings for his buddy, and obviously has some serious hang-ups about being left alone to fend for himself (Jun: "She's too amazing. I still think I want to be just like her. . ."), but Jun's mastery of chancing the subject or resorting to abject physical threats when peers come too close to the truth makes for a nice blend of oddball humor.

The same can be said for how the author balances the relationship between Misuzu (mistress of the deadpan) and Carol (strong-willed archetype, with a heart). Carol's obsessive kindness and hyper-femininity grates on both Tomo and Misuzu, but the girls treat her as an equal, which is a welcome shift from expectations. This blend makes more sense when readers realize Carol's sense of humor leans toward joking about the obvious in plain sight and forcing her friends to discern the contradictions for themselves (e.g., asking if she can tag along on a date, hugging Misuzu knowing she'll get slapped for invading her privacy, teasing her crush into revealing how deeply he does or doesn't feel for her). TOMO-CHAN IS A GIRL! #2 expands the narrative by proving just about everybody is an idiot when it comes to sending clear messages (or attempting to send clear messages) about personal affection.

Yanagida appears to have perfected the art of simplistic facial expressions in this volume. This manga exhibits impressive control over characters' emotions by way of downcast eyes, asymmetrical smiles, cheeks puffy with wonder, as well as deferential hand gestures. This volume makes abundant but well-calculated use of these and other, simplistic style choices. The simplified facial expressions and behaviors may sound like a shortcut but with characters ever on the precipice of revealing their personal truths -- of revealing too much -- it makes for a rather crafty and convenient medium, especially for high-school kids endeavoring to figure out who they are.

Tomo-chan is a Girl!, Vol. 2 (My Kindle Review)

As Tomo continues to try being more feminine, we get to see more situations with her friends and others. We see her having a karaoke fail, Misuzu trying to be swooned at and Carol being her usual helpful self. We also see Tomo’s parents’ chemistry and how she definitely takes after them in looks and attitude. Plenty of story for sure. A- (91%/Excellent)

The humor in this series reminds me of Monthly Girls Nozaki-kun which I loved!

Jun : thinks that Tomo is a dude, realize years later that she's, in fact, a girl
Jun later in the serie : thinks that Misaki-senpai is a girl, finds out later that he's a guy only when Tomo say "bad luck, man" to him

What a stupid man. I love him.

Another cute sequel to the first book. This book further complicates the fact that Tomo is a girl, but no one sees her that way. Is Jun maybe starting to see her a little bit more girly? I'm not sure. The peek into Tomo's parents lives is a nice addition to the story. I'm excited to read book 3!

The daily slice-of-life adventures of a fiery martial artist tomboy named Tomo, her goth ice-queen friend Misuzu, and her chaotically sporadic friend Carol. It mostly revolves around Tomo balancing her masculine personality and interests with her growing sense of femininity, her wacky antics with her two best friends, her embarrassingly awkward attempts at romance with her childhood crush Jun, and failing hilariously at trying to accomplish basic normal people things because of her rockheaded straightforwardness.

I definitely wasn’t expecting to rate this series so highly when I first started reading it out of the blue. It’s not a masterpiece of amazing storytelling or anything, but it turned out to be way better than it had any right to be just based on sheer fun factor. The comedy, romance and friendship dynamics are hilarious, wholesome and enjoyable from beginning to end.

The romance is mostly just a nice little cherry on top instead of being the central focus of the whole story. What really makes this series so good is the crazy antics between Tomo and her two best friends; Misuzo being the devil on her shoulder and Carol being the angel on her shoulder. Misuzo reminds me a lot of Wednesday Adams while Carol reminds me of Luna Lovegood.
The way their three personalities constantly clash and complement each other at the same time led to some brilliantly goofy and sweet moments.
A lot of the humor in the series is also surprisingly clever and subtle, making use of facial expressions, imagery and body language to deliver the punchline of a joke rather than just delivering it verbally. The chapters only being four panels each also helps with the precise and witty delivery.

On top of that, the romance between Tomo and her childhood friend Jun is just genuinely great. They’re both a couple of dopey athletic muscle heads who have treated each other like bros since they were kids and now convey their true feelings toward each other in adorably awkward ways. The dynamics between all the characters just worked really well.

A romantic comedy that can be enjoyed by people who don’t even normally like romantic comedies.

My rating: 4.3/5

Chapters 126-250 +omake 2!

Carol is hilarious, but girl blink twice if you need help. Gundo is best girl as always. Lastly, Akemi-san and Gorou-kun are literally couple goals (hilariously enough). Tomo-chan's awkwardness with Jun is a rollercoaster.

Aside from the karaoke scene where Tomo-chan sings lullabies has me rolling. Two other moments had me dying in this volume. Tomo's parents are wild. They are very strange honestly but hey her mother ships the two of them so it is what it is. I'll take a win. The way her father acts towards her mother had me questioning so so much but it was quickly answered by her mother.. lol.

Lastly, I'd like to discuss Carol... her mother's age. WILD. But, the girl is loaded. There's so much wrong here, but I have to remind myself that this is definitely fictional.

Absolutely love this.

Such interesting characters. Brings back memories of my school days. I too was in martial arts. Several of them. Most of my friends were girls. I hated that in the younger years, the boys teased & bullied the girls. Teen years, it made me so mad to see my friends cry when some jerk dumped her or spread rumors about her that were unflattering. I miss those days. Still have lots of female friends, & gay male friends. I didn't set out to have it this way. I just like girls & I feel comfortable around gay men. I find them so fascinating. And guys, let me lay down some straight up TRUTH. Most girls LOVE gay men. Befriend a few gay guys, & you will be SURROUNDED by cute women. Seriously. Anyways, kinda got off-topic. I really dig tomboys like Tomo. Jun is more & more starting to show that he has feelings for her. Maybe he hasn't sorted them out. There's hints about him being shy & putting on a facade. Time will tell. Art, decent. Dialogue, good. Characters, believable, likeable, relatable.

I understand Tomo so well.
With the whole “I wish I had more tactile relationships (with girls)”. To be fair, I am also queer as fuck but still, the struggle of initiating casual touches because you enjoy them but you’re too worried about 100 other things like being misunderstood or pushed away or sth? oh man, I wanna hug Tomo :(

Very different, but the chaos Carol brings to the story? Amazing. Though, Gundou is probably my favourite - her deadpan phrases and looks are just 11/10.

Loved it! Seeing Tomo-chan deal with Misuzu and Jun's past relationship was hilarious. I love that this did not cause tension with the girls and the story's overall mood stayed light and humorous. I especially loved getting to learn of Tomo-chan's parents and their relationship. Can't wait for volume 3!

This is becoming one of my favorite ongoing manga series. I love that we got a little more insight into Misuzu and Carol as characters. I'm really liking Carol a lot more, I felt like she was just kind of a ditzy character, but we're learning that isn't really the case. I love their dynamic with Tomo and of course Tomo and Jun.

Gave this series another chance when I heard that it ends at volume 8. I’m starting to see the appeal of it since Tomo-chan is a funny and unique character.
I’m curious to see how Tomo-chan acts in the next volume to attempt to win over Jun’s heart.

Still interesting, but I am hoping for more character development in the next book or I might loose interest. Positives: the supporting cast is growing, and more people are in on the joke of Tomo liking Jun and he has shown some more growth.

The antics continue

This continues to be a light entertaining read. I enjoy the fact it allows platonic relationships to develop alongside the romantic. I'll definitely be reading the next volume.

Tomo trying her best to interact Jun romantically but it always end up with an epic failure and Jun is super oblivious about Tomo's motives. Oh, the art style didn't change so as its episodic chapters and I somewhat enjoyed reading it.
