A self-proclaimed cynic, Eli is unsurprised by her boyfriend’s betrayal. Yet, its impact goes beyond what she realizes; a cruel bet, an array of secrets, and a thousand lessons not yet learned teach her how to trust again as an unlikely boy shows her a kind of love she never knew existed.
After Eli finds her boyfriend cheating on her, she seeks an escape. She heads to the beach to spend the summer before college with her two best friends. When Eli is unable to move past the betrayal, the girls devise a distraction; a bet about their handsome neighbor. Yet their thoughtless competition goes too far and their friendships are tested as they began to wonder how much they really know about each other and themselves. In the chaos, they manage to learn the truth about love, self-acceptance, and the journey back from rock bottom.

Eli wasn't really surprised when she found her boyfriend with another girl on her bed. She was used to people disappointing her. But she couldn't help but be angry and sad for what things could have been. She knew Ryan since she was ten. She had hope. But now she deems the male gender to be all alike. To get her mind off of Ryan one of her best friend's, Rachel, hatches a plan. She decides that if Eli believes that all men are the same then their new neighbor deserves a taste of what they all have been doing to girl's for eons. Eli, Rachel, and Ash are going to make the handsome neighbor, Jessie, fall in love with them and then break his heart. How's that for revenge?
I honestly did not understand the revenge plan. It was really the only part of the book that I was confused about. It made no sense to get revenge on someone they didn't know. He did act overly confident so if I could have seen a scene of the girl's where Jessie was acting like a jerk before they came up with the plan then that would have made better sense for me.
Other than the revenge plan I am a sucker for a good romance. If you have a good romance then you have saved the book for me easily. Jessie is an overly confident, charming guy but he never acted like a jerk. Hallelujah right? Eli was always sarcastic with Jessie. I always thought it was a defense mechanism since she's hurting right now, however she can be quite snarky with her best friends too. Mostly these two watched movies together which doesn't sound thrilling but it does sound realistic. Jessie and Eli's conversations were really fun. Of course, I knew something was going to happen with the two so it made it even more exciting when they were together.
Eli's friendship with Rachel and Ash was a huge part of the story. Best friends are the best, but Rachel... well let's say she took after Eli is the sarcastic department but she could be pretty cold hearted to Ash. I was always upset that Eli never really stood up for Ash as much as I would have liked her to. I know Rachel has her issues like Eli but what kind of friend is she really if she treats others so poorly? Eventually, things got smoother which I was thankful especially for Ash the poor girl. She's the girl who felt invisible in high school until Eli came along. I pretty much sympathized with her the most. She had the heart to be the only one who was hesitant to do the plan. Smart girl. The three girls were such a large part of the book and kept me interested (I sometimes need more than romance). The talks between Jessie and Eli always made me happy (But really it all goes back to the romance). All in all, other than the strange revenge plan I enjoyed Eli, her friends, and her love interest. How to Get Your Heart Broken was a pleasant read that thankfully didn't leave me hanging at the end. (Epilogues rule!)

This book was quite a bit different from what I was expecting but nonetheless I ended up enjoying it. Eli’s heart breaks when she catches her boyfriend cheating at a party in her own house. Along with Eli’s two best friends- Rachel and Ash, they decide to spend their summer at Ash’s beach house left by her grandfather before they start their respective colleges. Rachel comes up with a plan to make Eli forget her betrayal by her boyfriend by making Jessie, the guy next door fall in love with any of them and then by breaking his heart. They reluctantly agree and promise that they will not fall in love in the process but what’s going to happen when Eli finds herself breaking that promise?
The plot was… different. Definitely different. Rachel comes up with an entire plan on how to stop Eli from moping anymore over her ex-boyfriend and start living but before doing that she needs to get it out of her system and hence the revenge plan. I felt Rachel’s plan was a bit like Miss Havisham’s in Great Expectations because she wanted to break every man’s heart in order to satisfy her need for revenge because her heart was broken as well. Although the plan was weird but watching them trying to attract Jessie and impress him at first was quite enjoyable. I liked the trio’s friendship, although it was not at all normal but they were there for each other.
Eli was an okay protagonist. I liked her but I was quite surprised when she easily agreed to Rachel’s plan. I liked that when she found herself falling for Jessie she tried to tell him the truth about their plan but she should have tried harder. Jessie was an easy going likable guy. I enjoyed how the story flowed out although I felt some parts dragged out a bit. I was a bit surprised towards the ending as well, I would have been actually very angry if there was no epilogue but thankfully it made up for it.
Overall, How to Get Your Heart Broken was a different kind of read. The plot was executed well and although I couldn’t connect with the characters much, nonetheless I liked them. The writing was simple and easy to read. I easily finished this book in a few sittings.
Elle was living the life of any teenage girl. She had a cute boyfriend, college plans and a kick ass graduation party.
Sure, Elle and Ryan understood their two year relationship would come to an end once they left for college, but what Elle did not expect was to find Ryan in her bed with another girl.
AT HER GRADUATION PARTY!
Well, Elle showed Ryan what she was made of by sending him on a trip to the ER and all I can think about is…

Well fast-forward the plot and Elle is with her best friends, Ash and Rachel spending the summer at Ash’s beach house. Elle meets a hottie, and the romance begins.
I loved reading the innocence of young love blooming and the author did a fantastic job tele-porting me back into the days of my youth when summertime and boys were all that mattered.
Each character introduced are brought to life with wonderful attributes to Elle’s life. The story line was quite perfect.
What was not perfect was the writing...
I found there to be way more errors than what I would normally accept, but because the story was so compelling I tried to ignore it. An editor could have easily turned this book into a 5 star rating but frequent mistakes such as “I scouted over” instead of “scooted” or “my eyes snapped upon” instead of “open” took away too much focus of the story at hand. Overall, A for effort. Just invest in a proof reader, it would make a huge difference.
I almost like it, because I think that Eli's character is well portrayed, she has a lot of issues, she is not only cynic, and I didn´t understand why Jessie was so pissed, Eli did try to explain.
Absolutely love Jesse. He is kind, sweet, gentle and understands so much more that Eli thinks. He is also patient and needs to be with Eli. I didn’t blame him at the near end when it came to Eli. She did him wrong the whole summer by lying to herself and him about her feelings and the bet that was all kinds of wrong. Yes I felt for Eli about her parents and the douchenozzle boyfriend but this bet was horrible. Just mean and hurtful.
Eli was hurt badly and her trust is brought to an all time low in others so when she gets to the house to be with her two best friends I thought yeah a time for her to get her head together and over her ex. but one of her friends Rachel makes this bet about the boy next door. the sweet kind adorable next door and I just couldn’t believe it. How could they play with emotions like that was just wrong. But Eli was hurt and angry. She was in denial and distrustful and wanted someone to suffer. Little did she know that Jesse was the one to help her have hope and faith again. To show her patience, honesty and kindness and what it means to love again. Love unconditionally and trust with all you are. He treated her with respect and as a equal. They drove each other batty but there for each other no matter what. Well until she was honest with herself and him and crushed him. We see Rachel go from sarcastic and angry to one that begins to have a wish for her future and want to see happiness for herself and her friends. We see Ash go from mousy to confident and standing up for herself and get closer to her friends.
There are two stories there. the renewing faith of love and trust for Eli as she fell in love with Jesse and the friends and them learning who each other are and being there for each other and in the end becoming closer. So Eli and her friends due to the bet end up hurting each other alot and their friendship is tested but they were always there for each other and they got closer. They learned to be more honest with each other but when one was hurt and in pain the others were there. They protected each other and learned to trust and be honest with each other. Eli learned to confront her fears and find out who she is and be okay with it. This was able to happen because Jesse and her friends.
The characters in the story have you root for them to find happiness and stay close. Of finding out who they were and what they want. For Eli’s friends, it was great to see them become like the Yaya sisterhood-close and there no matter what. For Eli watching her finally stop lying to herself and truly look at herself-her wants, desires and needs-and see the truth. To stop hiding behind her anger and sarcasm and become more real and honest. When this happens than she truly can find herself and happiness except when she finally does it may be to late because she kept hurting Jesse over the summer by pulling away and not being truthful.
The plot is character and emotional driven. We get some sweet moments like in the indoor fort or the reindeer mug incident. We get some intense moments like both bonfire moments and we get some character building trust and bringing people closer moments like when the parents came and they were there for the backlash. We see life before college as Eli and her friends find out who they really are and what they can be. We see love come and fight for it. We see hope renewed and trust be seen again. This is the fun fast paced story of Eli and her friends. How they get closer when they are honest with each other, Eli being honest with herself finally and Eli and Jesse finding love with each other. This is the story of a interesting time at the beach that changes their worlds and has them grow up and closer together. That renews faith and trust but also shows Eli what it means to love and trust in love. the ending will have you melt for Jesse is just amazing and seeing Eli change from angry and distrustful to one who is honest and learns what love is and has faith in that again is wonderful.
At its roots, How to Get Your Heart Broken, by Rose Fall, feels solid. A group of high school friends spend the summer before heading to college at the beach, finding out who they are, and for Eli, mending her broken heart. Described as “Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants meets John Tucker Must Die”, it feels a little like both, but the story eventually gets overwhelmed by one too many things going on.
I liked the friendship story, but it kept getting interrupted by the love story. I liked the love story, but it kept getting interrupted by the friendship story, and soon I felt as though I had a slight case of whiplash, especially as plot points were introduced to move one story ahead, leaving the other in murky waters. And, the plot device from which everything stemmed-a bet between the girls-stood on rocky ground from the beginning, with no real definition.
Eli had her heart broken on graduation night and heads to the beach with her best friends, Rachel and Ashton, to try and mend her heart. Each girl has their own demons to slay as they move into adulthood and are easy to identify with for the book’s target audience. As the summer progresses, secrets are revealed, which challenge girls to not only look inward, but to redefine their approach to friendship. Introducing summer romance to this seems natural, but having it stem from a bet added unnecessary drama.
There’s great potential is Eli and Jessie’s romance. Eli is angry and sworn off boys for the foreseeable future. Jessie is the opposite of everything Eli believes boys his age are: he’s kind, funny, and sincere. A summer of him slowly trying to win Eli over would have made for a fun story. Instead, it gets bogged down with guilt and melodrama because the girls know what they’re doing is wrong, and, naturally, Eli falls for Jessie and inevitably breaks his heart. I’ve seen this thing done well in John Tucker Must Die and She’s All That, but author Fall never makes the bet feel important unless it’s to make Eli feel guilty and, of course, as the proverbial straw that breaks the camel’s back.
How to Get Your Heart Broken is a light read with a steady pace. 3 stars as I liked it. Heat level: 1 (some kissing and hints of intimacy)
I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for honest feedback.
After reading this book I felt very confused. Don’t get me wrong I enjoyed reading this book, but I think some of the events could have happened in real life and I guess I personally wouldn’t have done the same things, which affected my opinion.
My main issue was around the bet that happened between the girls. I don’t think I fully captured the terms of the bet and what was supposed to happen. I could see betting for the guy to fall in love with one of them, but the others back off once he shows interest. It was confusing when he was showing attention to one of the girls and the other one would not back off yet. I kind of felt like if you were a true friend you would back off right away or make the bet to begin with. I don’t see either how the bet would have made them have a stronger friendship or fix any of the heartbreak. In the end everything does work out I just didn’t love the whole concept of a bet and this being a huge part of the story.
I did love how each character went through their own journey of self discovery. They each learned a large amount about each other and leaned on each other during their learning. The story is only told through Eli’s eyes, but we get a real sense of how the other girls feel as well as their overall growth at the end. Each comes from a broken home of some sort so for them to realize that they will be ok and be able to move on from these issues. The girls were able to confront the issues and move past them, which I believe should have been the major portion of the story versus keep going back to the bet. They all needed to grow and the bet just didn’t add to their growth in my mind.
I also really liked Jessie from the beginning. He seemed like a very stand up guy and someone that one of the girls could fall for. He had a lot of positive attributes and you could see him as Eli’s compliment. He stayed by her side through everything and I couldn’t have imagined a better way to show what love is.
I would suggest this as a night time read, it is easy to pick up and put down. It was easy to follow along and the chapter titles gave a quick outline of what was going to happen.
I received a copy of this book from YA Bound Book Tours for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of this book.
This book really shocked me. I absolutely loved it.
The plot...as I started reading, I found it a little predictable, and I was actually really scared the whole book would be that way. But around halfway through - things changed. Everything became hard to guess and full of little plot twists that made me really want to read on and find out what was going to happen between Eli and Jessie!
The characters...ah I found them so confusing at times - especially Rachel. But if you decide to read this book, here's one bit of info for you. Read on. I learned a lot more about the extraordinary bond between the three main characters as the book progressed, which I loved! They made me feel really involved in the story and the development of their friendship.
The writing...for the most part, was great! At times I did find it a little confusing and hard to read (especially in places with dialogue), but other than that I loved it. Fall definitely has a certain way with words.
Something I liked...the unexpectedness of the ending. I really couldn't work out what was going to happen, and it could have gone a lot differently. This book walked the fine line between being cheesy and predictable, and poetic and romantic. I found it to be the latter, luckily, and the plot really helped that.
Something I disliked...nothing in particular. Only the dialogue thing, and how some of the writing seemed a bit jumpy - at times I wouldn't be sure where Eli was or who she was with (as the scenes would change quite suddenly).
My thoughts...I'm so glad I read this! Definitely for lovers of YA romance and contemporary. If you enjoyed The Sky is Everywhere by Jandy Nelson or The Edge of Falling by Rebecca Serle, I would recommend this!
This is the story of Eli. After she graduates from high school she finds her good for nothing boyfriend in her bed with another girl. Eli loses it and writes off all men. She decides to spend the summer with her two best friends at the ones beach house. This is when the book starts to pick up. After a cruel bet and tons of secrets are reveled these three friends learn things about themselves while sorting threw the issues that they face.
I really liked the chemistry between all the characters in this story. I thought the banter and one-liners between Eli and Jessie; the boy next door was fantastic. This book had a lot going on and it dealt with a few important issues. The story flowed pretty well and it had me wanting to know how things were going to turn out. When I got to the end I wanted to hunt down the author and beat her with her book but she redeemed herself thank god with the Epi!!!!!
“I knew that Jessie and I were going to be okay; I knew we were all going to be okay. And I had faith that wherever our individual paths led us would be exactly where we were always meant to be. For a girl that had never believed in anything, this realization meant everything.”
This book had me laughing one minute and choked up the next. My heart hurt for Jessie throughout most of the book and I felt sorry for Eli at certain points but most of the drama she brought on herself. Let me say that Rachel was a first class bitch through most of this book but she had her own demons she had to make peace with.
Overall, this book was very entertaining and flowed really well. This is the first book that I have read by this author but I enjoyed her writing style so it probably will not be the last.
