River Wolf Pack #2

Second Alpha

Rate this book
Sequel to First Omega

As second in command of the River Wolf Pack, David takes his duty as ambassador to the Human/Werewolf Congress very seriously. With the threat of war, it’s more important than ever to strengthen human/werewolf relations.

But the meeting at the werewolf compound doesn’t go very well. The humans find the homosexual, polygamous nature of the werewolves, along with the fact that the men can bear children, off-putting.

On top of this, although David’s human lover Jax says he loves David, he is not willing to take the bite and become a werewolf himself. David doesn’t see how they can have a relationship, and even wonders if he would be better off mating with Brooks, an attractive beta in the pack. When David and Brooks are kidnapped by the vice president of the Congress, David has to think quickly to save his pack, even if it means throwing his own life away.

Oh this one was goood. What happens when you get one human who usually tops, and one Alpha Werewolf? A battle for dominance.

David is the second in command to the River Wolf Pack and has been appointed as a new human/werewolf ambassador. As has Jax, a human who we met in First Omega. Jax and David started their little tryst at the end of First Omega, therefore this story starts with them already being quite established.

This story was a mix of David and Jax trying to reveal conspiracies within the human congress to eradicate all living werewolves, and then trying to navigate a relationship between two completely different species.

I really didn't care about the whole humans trying to kill werewolves drama. It was good to see the plot broadening out from the first book, and that will obviously carry over to the third. The drama created a little bit of tension towards the end, but mostly I read this for Jax and David.

I loved Jax and David’s story, despite not liking Jax too much. There are so many complications for these two, being of different species. They split their time between living in the city and living at the pack compound. David hates living in the city, away from nature and surrounded by people who look at him as though he's a monster. Jax isn’t accepted by the pack because he is human and misses his family and friends while he’s away. They struggle to reconcile the differences between them so much, that things turn a little ugly when one of Jax’s friends is bitten by a werewolf and turns into one. This was doesn’t without his friends consent, but not fully with it either.

Honestly Jax annoyed me quite a bit. He seemed unable to understand David’s POV, and I didn't feel like he loved David as much and David loved him. Of course, I could feel that way because we only got David's POV. That made it harder to sympathise with Jax (although, I’ll give you a little spoiler… we get Jax’s POV in the next novel, Third Mate, and it did help me understand him better).

Just like last book, the sex is incredibly hot!!! Like so hot!!! Most of the time Jax is super keen to get that knot all up and in him, but at one point Jax decides he’s sick of always bottoming. This really confuses David as he has to process what being an alpha really means, and how that plays into not always being the top during sex. Needless to say, he loves a good fucking. But of course, that creates more issues because no one in the pack can know that David bottoms, otherwise his place will be undermined.

Phew, so yes, lots of issues between these two that they have to work through, but they do get there and the journey was written well. I’d say a solid HFN, but their story also continues in the next installment.

Can a Werewolf and A Human Be Happy?

Book two in Rebecca James's "River Pack Series" and the author has written a book about cross-species love matches and whether one can ever truly be happy without taking on the other life and assimilating into their culture. Ok, so maybe I am looking at this book a little too deep - but, it is about a human and a werewolf falling in love - which is forbidden. You need to read book one in this series, First Omega, before you even try to read this story. The MC in this story are David and Jax but we get to see characters from book one as well.

David has been appointed as the new Human/Werewolf Congress Ambassador after Josiah chose to stay and live with the pack and his mate River. As second in command of the River Wolf Pack, David takes his duty as ambassador to the Human/Werewolf Congress very seriously. With the threat of war, it’s more important than ever to strengthen human/werewolf relations. The wolves welcome humans into their pack to observe and study them to help educate others in an attempt to bring peace. This doesn't go over well and situations are twisted making the wolves appear to be barbaric Neanderthals who knock their intended mates over the head and have their way with them. Not to mention the humans not understanding the polygamous nature of werewolves, the ability of men to have children, etc.

So, what happens when Jax who is human and working with the Human/Werewolf congress goes and falls in love with a werewolf, yet refuses to take the bite and become one. Jax is essentially stuck in rival worlds where neither side understands the other and the humans have ulterior motives behind wanting to figure out how the wolves have built a self-sustaining community. A lot of drama, some kidnapping, some angsty decisions, and a human who can't commit to one thing or another is what happens. I enjoyed this story but I could have done with about 5 pages less of Jax wavering - I don't know why that bothered me so much except I did feel bad for David being left to wonder why he wasn't good enough for Jax.

Overall, a good second story in the series and I am eager to read the next!

I remember very vividly when I finished reading 'First Omega', book one in Rebecca Janes's series 'River Wolf Pack'. I was beyond excited and all I wanted to know was whether the author planned on making this a series. I reached out to the author (bugged her, more like it) and begged to know if there was going to be more. I was thrilled to discover that there would be since I was nowhere near done with this alternate reality, hot sexy shifters, and male pregnancy world. It has everything I love, and more!

David is second alpha to River, and his best friend. David is also the ambassador for the pack with the Human/Werewolf Congress, a job that frustrates David to no end. David loves Jax, his human lover, but David can't live in the human world, and Jax can't live in the werewolf world. David believes that giving Jax the werewolf bite is the only solution, except Jax is horrified at that idea. David doesn't know what to make of his life anymore. David loves Jax and can't imagine life without him, and he knows Jax loves him, too. But there are so many aspects of werewolf lives and pack bonds that Jax simply can't understand. David is an alpha wolf, and Jax is far from being a submissive beta or omega. All of these worries plague David.

The Human/Werewolf Congress still has a faction that wants to eliminate all werewolves. When several humans from the congress come to the wolf compound to visit and see how the werewolves live, all is going well until one of their members and a werewolf fall for each other, and the human is given the bite. The political repercussions are huge, regardless that the human wanted the bite. This makes River and David's responsibilities increase tenfold as this could start a war. Not to mention that Jax's reaction to the whole situation shows David how Jax really feels, and all the hope David had is lost.

With humans, and the ones in charge of the congress, it still comes down to one thing. They might scream and yell about werewolves being nothing but animals, and that Josiah was "kept" at the compound, and now another young man has been "kept", but the basis for them kidnapping David and Brooks is greed. Nothing more, nothing less. Greedy humans who want the gold that's in the Cascade river that flows through pack land. Typical humans.

I really enjoyed this second installment, but I have to admit that I wasn't a fan of Jax. I understood where he was coming from, but I never really warmed up to him. Much of 'Second Alpha' revolves around David's feelings for Jax, the issues in their relationship, and as much as I liked the view inside David's head, I really wanted to see him with someone else. However, besides that, the author has written another fabulous gem of a story, and I love the world she has created. Not to mention the shocker that Josiah dropped, literally, in the hands of River! I can't wait for the next book as there are so many options for who it could revolve around, especially since the faction within the congress seems to be dismantled. Or not. *grins*

Too many characters to keep track of and nothing but fucking drama. It's like the shifter version of Melrose Place but not as entertaining.

When the knotting stops being super drooly HAWT that's a problem. Just sayin.

Well, this one definitely took a turn I was not expecting in more than one way, and I’m happy and shocked in some ways at how it’s come about. Because there are a lot of changes coming to River Wolf. Some good, some definitely bad, and some…….no one is sure of yet.

David has never been more in love than he is now. But being in love is becoming painful, because his lover is human and not a total bottom. And it’s going against everything David is to ‘submit’ to anyone, especially a human. But that’s not all that’s going on. Jax doesn’t want the bite to change, and when someone else does and takes it, Jax makes some comments that shows how he really feels. At least that’s how David feels about it. And to make matters worse, the feral wolves are closing in, and the Congress has got a branch that has now kidnapped David and Brooks in order to get what they want from them. And things are looking grim. But that’s not all the surprises in store. And the River Wolf pack is going to have to make some adjustments, or things are going to be in great turmoil.

I really like how this is turning. I really am. It’s becoming such a good series. The push and pull, the angst, the threat of war and all the inner changes going on in the pack as well. It’s an uproar and River is doing all he can to make sure things stay the way they are supposed to. David is trying as his second, but with his head messed up about Jax, it’s hard. And although, sometimes, I want to shake these alphas because of the alpha macho attitudes they have, it’s funny to see how much their lives are changing because of the right mate. Whether it be a hybrid or a true omega, these alphas are now realizing who truly ‘wears the pants’ in the family and it’s quite funny. But it’s a good thing too, because the alphas are starting to listen to the fact that there may be other solutions other than theirs. And it’s helping. It’s causing things to change, which is hard for some of them, but they are learning to roll with the tide.

And with the new pack members, it’s really going to change. And hopefully for the better.

ARC received from author via Indigo Marketing & Design in exchange for an honest review.

This is the second book in the series and it continues where the last one left off. In order for these to make sense, you would have to read them in order. I felt this one was a bit of a slow starter and at times I started getting confused about who was who. There’s so many characters and there is so much going on with each of them, all having their own stories running alongside that of the MC’s. In saying that, more men, means much more hot sex from all these hunky exhibitionists. This book mainly focused on the relationship between David (a shifter) and Jax (human). For some reason, I didn’t take to Jax and felt that David could do much better for himself.

Although this took a while to get going, the human and shifter world interact more in this instalment and this is when it starts to get exciting. During Brooks and David’s trip to the city, the pair get more than they bargained for.

All the characters from book one feature heavily in this one too, with the addition of some new ones and the delivery of Josiah and River’s babies throws a real spanner in the works. I can’t wait to read the next book to see how things work out or if they even can….

Spoiler Ahead This was book two in the " River Wolf Pack" series. David is second in command and he is ambassador to the Human/Werewolf Congress and he takes it very seriously. David also has a human lover Jax. David and jax love each other but neither of them can live in each others world. Jax doesn't want the bite to turn into a were and David knows that he can't live in the human world. This book also had a lot going on in it River and Josiah are expecting twins and when he gives birth it's two girls and that's a serious no, no, one of the pack members X bit one of the humans and turned him and David is still worried about his relationship when he and Jax break up. When David and Brooks go to the conference they are drugged and kidnapped by the vice president of the Congress, and one of the humans that visited them Carl they want the gold and David knows that if he doesn't do something quick they will be killed. This was a pretty good read although I didn't understand what Jax problem was about turning. This book was well written like the first book with no errors in grammar or spelling. I am looking forward to reading the next book in this series.

Really enjoyed. I like that this author really puts work in. It's not just the run of the mill mating trope. In this book, she complicates things a bit with making David's (second alpha) love interest a dominant human, who doesn't seem to want the bite (that would change him to a werewolf). Not only that, David has to deal with his desires to submit to Jax at times in the bedroom. We have the council meetings with the humans and trying to smooth tensions there, and the human delegation visits to the wolf compound that are trying times for everyone involved. We have the beta Brooks (who I actually like a lot) and his feelings for David. We have the addition of a coyote shifter and a twist on the twins' birth at the end...just lots of great storylines that were handled really well. I didn't love the Bart storyline/showdown; it just changed the whole tone of the book and make it a bit hokey, but the birth of the babies brought things back.

4 stars. On to Book 3!

PS. This really should not be read as a standalone. You need to read Book 1 to understand what's going on.

So much happened, I'm still digesting it all. The story is part of a series and focuses on David and Jax, an alpha wolf and a human. It's also peppered with characters from the first book and advances the storyline of the Human Coalition. The battles for dominance, the introduction of Brooks as a possible mate for Jax and the suspenseful moments all added up to an entertaining story. I really enjoyed it and can't wait to read the third book!

This is the second book in the : River Wolf Pack Book Series

This book has great world building in this installment we get too know more of the key players of the pack . Yes there is change coming to the pack and of course not everyone will approve I can see that the pact will probably think that their way of life will be in jeopardy and turn on the Alpha and his family . I can't wait to see how this Author handle these changes . I have too say this series handles the human Shifter dynamic more realistically than any other shifter book that I have read . Looking forward to the next book in this series .

MM story with Male Pregnancy. David is second to River in the River Wolf Pack and he is a Alpha. His "mate" is Jax a Human and a Dominant. Story continues on from the first book First Omega. With some of the humans holding on to the belief that humans are superior and werewolves need eradicating and the Wolves believing Humans are odd and untrustworthy. Great Addition to the series. has characters from the previous book. Highly Recommend. Entertaining and Enjoyable read.

This book was provided by the author via IndiGo Marketing & Design in exchange for an honest review.
I give this book a solid 3 stars for the action and intrigue.

I am all about that A/B/O life and no story would be complete without slick, uncontrollable heats, and the struggles of explaining how men get impregnated and give birth! I wouldn’t recommend this book for anyone who can’t appreciate this genre as a guilty pleasure free of guilt and full of PLEASURE!

Now onto the book. The story takes place in an alternate universe in which werewolves are known to exist and have a hostile relationship with humans. In an effort to strike a peace, the pack leader of the River Wolf Pack invites a representative from the Congress to stay in the pack and observe the wolves’ way of life. After pack leader River and Josiah become mates, relations with the Congress become even more strained. The answer, to send David, River’s second in command, to the “city” to join forces with Jax in hopes of making enroads with the humans that want to kill the wolves. Things quickly heat up between the seemingly star-crossed pair…unsettling both them and future of the pack.

This book is a part of very connected series and I wouldn’t recommend reading books out of order.

This story has way more intrigue and action than book one. That said, if you are expecting to see how David and Jax meet and watch their relationship develop….you are going to be DISAPPOINTED. Most of their relationship takes places “off camera” and so by the time book two starts…they have an established relationship that is slowly falling off the rails. Like book one, I have no idea what David and Jax actually do for a living or what their personal beliefs are…just that they are really attracted to one another and trying to find a way to be together in this crazy world. It is pretty clear that the author isn’t into character back stories or centering the stories on just the MCs. I saw way more of River/Josiah than I wanted to in this book and the pack drama sometimes overshadows David and Jax’s story line. That said, once I made myself focus on the whole story line and not so much on David/Jax…I could appreciate it more. I’m not sure if that was the point but oh well.

I don’t consider myself an angst-whore (I was shocked to find out how many people aren’t happy unless there is reams and reams of back and forth between the MCs. Too exhausting for me.), but the will-they-won’t-they between David and Jax is so intense. The chemistry between this pair is SUPER HOT! RJ does a pretty good job of establishing right from the beginning that David is really into Jax and Jax cares about David…but this isn’t a typical A/O relationship…it’s more like two alphas. It seems as if everything about these two is taboo. It becomes increasingly clear that Jax is happy with the status quo for now. He’s not dreaming of happy ever afters and having David’s child. As David comes to accept this, he starts to ask himself if his life goals are more important that the man who is currently warming his bed. After all, he’s not a “city” guy and Brooks seems more than happy to be the man in his life. I really liked David/Brooks BUT I couldn’t help wanting him to be with a guy who could put him first and tied for first in his life. Brooks seems to really bring out the protective side of David. There are a few moments when you see them together that shows different and non-traditional the David/Jax pairing is for David.
The action was pretty good. There are new additions to the pack, the human interactions are hilarious and awkward, and we get to finally see the Turned. We also start to see the first rumblings that everything is not well in the River Wolf Pack. Josiah finally gives birth, but it causes more problems. The cast of characters couldn’t be any bigger. Good luck in trying to keep up with them. It is probably easier to just take people as they come and go.

All in all…I liked it. I’m almost finished with the first three books of the series and I can’t wait to see what happens in book three.

***A Copy of these books was provided to Bayou Book Junkie in exchange for a fair and honest review***

As Second Alpha of the River Wolf Pack, David takes the safety and wellbeing of his pack seriously. He has never been a fan of humans and was extremely wary of Pack Alpha River bringing one into their pack to learn more about them, he’d rather they avoided humans altogether and went back to how they once were. Now that River is mated to a half human, half werewolf, he is tasked with learning as much as he can about the humans in hopes of maintaining peace between the two species. As ambassador to the Human/Werewolf Congress, he finds himself traveling back and forth between pack lands and human cities more than he’d like. Luckily he has Jax, the human ambassador by his side, not to mention in his bed.

Jax Moreau loves David, however, he is unwilling to take the bite and become a werewolf himself. He understands why David wants it as much as he does, but Jax isn’t ready to give up his human life, not to mention his family. He’s willing to continue their relationship just as it is, they love each other, that’s all that matters. The more Jax shows his reluctance at becoming one of them, the more David is convinced that they won’t last, and maybe he should end things now, after all he knows Brooks, a sweet and attractive pack Beta, would love to become his mate.

When a visit by a group of humans at the werewolf compound doesn’t go very well, the prospect of an impending war becomes more likely. The humans who live very differently are disturbed by the lifestyle and culture of the werewolves. Their homosexual and sometimes polygamous matings, the fact that the men can bear children, not to mention the idea of Alphas, Betas and Omegas is too much for many of them to accept and they make sure to report this to the Congress. So when David and Brooks are both kidnapped by the Congress's vice president, David is forced to make a decision that will hopefully save his pack, even if he himself won’t survive.

I really liked Second Alpha, I loved that it was a great combination of action and romance. This book is mostly about the relationship between David and Jax and their struggles with being an inter-species couple and the bigotry by humans and werewolves alike. There is a lot of coming to terms of how being an Alpha and dating a non-submissive reflects on David's wolf and how he's always thought of himself. As well as the emotional toll on both because of Jax’s reluctance at becoming a werewolf and whether or not he may not be as accepting and comfortable with werewolves after all. This was one of the hardest parts of the story for me because I truly felt for David. He is struggling with a lot of self-reflection and doubt. He loves Jax fiercely, but feels helpless when it comes to making things work in the long run. While I understood Jax’s points to some extent, I had trouble not getting angry with him and ultimately siding with David.

As David is trying to navigate his love life we also have the relationship between humans, specifically the members of the Congress and the werewolves. As we saw in the first book there is a real danger of war and the werewolves would like to avoid that as best they can. This is where the action of the book takes place and I loved seeing David as well as Brooks have to decide how to get through it and ultimately help the pack.

The first time I read this book I gave it 3 stars, however, now that I've gone back and read the first book I found I enjoyed it even more. I loved David, I liked Jax. They had great chemistry and were definitely sexy together. I really can't wait to see what happens as the series progresses.

Would I recommend Second Alpha? Absolutely!

I am so happy to be back in the world of the River Wolf pack! In this book the story continues of the River and pack trying to keep the peace between the humans and the wolves. Still has complicated as ever with those on both sides who are against the whole idea. Human’s because they think wolves are the lesser than species who are nothing more than animals and the wolves because they do not trust or want human’s and their oddities in their world. Again, this author continues to build on the world she created for us in the previous book with such ease and flow. He cannot be read as a standalone!

As second Alpha to River, David had always hated humans but when River, his best friend and Alpha, sent him to the human world his ideas and views had changed because he fell in love with a human. And no one is more surprised about this than himself but the wolves of his pack and the humans of Jax’s world and neither are going to make this easy on them. David is an alpha in his own right and struggles with the ever changing dynamics in his relationship with Jax plus the fact that his love refuses to take the bite to become one of them. He can’t help but be hurt by Jax and his reasons for not wanting to turn. Should he just mate with a wolf, like Brooks or stay to fight for Jax despite the pack?

Jax loves David, he knows he does, but he can’t get himself to want to change for David. He doesn’t want to lose David and he is willing to do the work to make it work but the whole world seems to be against them. And it’s things like their love that is causing even further riffs within both human and wolf communities. Does he have to let David go to be with a wolf of his pack?

What I loved about this story was although it was a HFN ending it wasn't one that came easy for David and Jax and not for the pack either. With Brooks thrown into the mix it further emphasizes to David and Jax how different they are and the whole time you are hoping the differences will not tear them apart. David and Jaz bruised my heart a little through this story because they struggled so much to not let their differences over run their love and didn’t always succeed. I do admit to getting a little mad at Jax and what seemed like unwillingness on his part to change or bend at all for David and his own struggles. Especially since David knows it’s not because Jax doesn’t love him but it does cause all these other host of reason to run through David.

River has to continue to stand up for what he and his pregnant mate Josiah believe is the right thing to do for the pack and its continued peace with the humans, but not all the pack agrees with him. I loved the over arcing storyline of peace with the humans because not only is this carried from book to book it is interconnected with each relationship and how even a love bond can cause a rift in the pack. And there were babies in this book!! Which ended up causing even more of a rift within the pack, one that is a shock to all involved. I loved some of the other secondary couples that got together in this book and how even those seemed well developed especially for secondary stories.

I cannot wait to read book 3, Third Mate, and see what wonderfulness the author will bring to this story again!

I had seriously high hopes for this book because at the end of First Omega (River Wolf Pack #1) I couldn't think about anything but my anticipation for a book about David and Jax. I was not disappointed.

David was like that bratty, grumpy character that you couldn't help but love because you knew deep down that he was actually a little fluff ball of love and comfort. Of course he hated Jax at first, being human and all, but it's no surprise that any two men in this series that get close together are gonna hook up sooner or later... usually sooner though.

4d40092d16c69842e68957663403015e

Jax is the character that you've heard a lot about and already had an impression of before the book started but weren't really sure about. He was also a lot more patient and understanding (but definitely not soft) than I expected him to be. I wasn't too sure how these two were going to get on as a couple, and honestly I expected a lot more turbulence than there was (but I guess I can't really complain - this is kinda a shifter insta-love series).

But I was not disappointed! With the ending of Book One I knew I wanted more David and Jax and with Book Two I got more David and Jax.

And shit, did Jax have a dominance streak in there. Poor little David didn't know what hit him (or how bad he really wanted it - until he already had it, anyway).

The conflict in this book wasn't as pronounced as it was in the first, so it felt like more of a side story than part of the same plot, but these two have definitely become my favorite couple of the series! (Now we just need to figure out what's going down with Brooks because that boy deserves some love).

I know it wasn't, but this book seemed a lot shorter than the first (maybe just because I liked this one a lot?). To anyone who enjoyed First Omega, I'd recommend this book without hesitation. I think it was definitely a more engaging read than the first and the characters were without a doubt more complex and developed. Definitely looking forward to reading the third book in the series!!!

This book is the second in the series. The main characters, David (River Wolf Pack’s second alpha and pack representative), and Jax (the Human/Werewolf congress representative) were introduced to us in the first book. Tensions are high between the humans and werewolves with neither side truly understanding the other. Humans are given a chance to visit the werewolf home to learn more about them, and we are given a deeper look into the werewolf society. David and Jax are falling in love and the story revolves around them trying to come to terms with the differences between each society and figure out how their relationship can work in the face of bigotry and hatred from both sides. River and Josiah, from the first book, are woven into the story but take a secondary position to David and Jax’s tale. I like how the author brought in more depth to River’s character and his place in werewolf society but still left David as the protagonist. The situation becomes explosive when a human is turned into a werewolf, some evil members of the congress show their true face, and David and Jax come to a bitter understanding of just how great the differences between the two societies really are. We are also introduced to other paranormal characters and given more detail about rogue wolves and their creation. It ends on a HFN note with a twist that will affect the future of the werewolf society.

The book was a bit slow-paced through the first part, but picked up speed half way through and finished with a flourish. It was well-written with few grammatical or syntax errors and was very enjoyable to read.

Overall I really like the book and look forward to the next in the series. Well done Ms. James.

In First Omega, Rebecca James built her world and introduced a lot of memorable characters. She also wove in an engaging plot twist that needed to be looked at from a different angle. This angle we get in Second Alpha as we follow the—like the title hints—second alpha of the River pack, David, as he goes to the city to function as the ambassador for the pack. Pack alpha, River, has enough on his hands with Josiah being pregnant and his human half causes trouble.

Once again, I absolutely enjoyed myself when reading a book by Rebecca James. She has a flair for character building and pacing the information the readers need. She knows how to ramp up the heat in the right places, and how to make the reader inch their butt closer to the edge of their chair. There’s a sweet balance between action, heaty sex, ups and downs in the character’s relationships, and the threats to be solved.

Unlike the first book, that left me pacing for this one, Second Alpha has a nice round-off and it scares me. I need more from this world. I wanna know about River’s and Josiah’s future, I wanna know if David gets the man he loves, and I wanna know if this bordering threat of the Ferals is there or just in my over-imaginary head. In short, I. Just. Want. More!

I like the fact that the first book was called FIRST something, and the second SECOND something. Whether this is a coincidence or if Rebecca James has a fiendishly clever plan going, I cannot say, but I find it kinda cool.

This is the second book in the River Pack series and sequel to First Omega. This is David and Jax's story.

I was unsure about David in the first book, he is River's second alpha of the pack and I felt he was portrayed as having his own agenda. However, he becomes the new liaison with the human/werewolf congress and continues his affair with the human - Jax. This causes a number of issues, not only for the pack, but between themselves. Jax dithers about taking *the bite* and sometimes it feels it's angst for angst sake. At this point I started to really feel sorry for David and wanted Jax to man up and just make a decision! There is increasing unrest within the pack when more humans visit and River is distracted with Josiah's pregnancy. More drama when David is kidnapped by dodgy congressmen and there is a face-off with feral werewolves (humans who were turned against their will) - again, a plot bunny that was a little too easily written away.....

There are a number of introductions to new characters, including waifs and strays. Pack politics are now coming to the fore and there is evidence that all is not happy on pack-grounds when River and Josiah's pup's are born!! It ends on a fade to black with Leo's book next in the series.

Entertaining read.

This was a great follow up the the first book, First Omega. At the end of that book, David, a were, was working with Jax, a human, to improve relations between the two groups. They are together as a couple before this book starts, and this is a great story that doesn't ignore the challenges and hesitations that these two men face. They come from different worlds, and sometimes it is hard to ignore past beliefs (example the belief that werewolves are monsters). Although Jax knows it isn't true and he is in love with David, the thought of being turned a werewolf is overwhelming and terrifying. I was glad this wasn't glossed over and was explored as a truth for the two guys. I'm very interested in reading another book in this series; I am glad there will be another one coming! I would love to see who these two fare after coming to a compromise, and I am sooooo curious to know how things will change for the pack with the birth of River and Josiah's kids. This was a great addition to the River Wolf Pack series.

Fell in love with the first one, so of COURSE I had to dive into the second one as well. Freaking phenomenal! Can there be a better sequel anywhere? I loved this book to peices. First there was David, who in the first book you were lead to believe he was the bad guy, but it couldn't be further from the truth. I adore David, so much. He's a fantastic Alpha who loves his pack almost as much as River does. He tried so hard to help bridge the gap between humans and werewolves.
Jax on the other hand, now he I really liked in the first book, albeit he had a very short intro in the first book but what I read of him I liked. Until this book. Now, I understand that everyone is different. I just had Jax pegged as a really great guy with an open mind and a good heart. But he surprised me with his reaction to a few hurdles in his relationship with David that made me think that maybe he isn't the greatest guy out there. He redeemed himself towards the end, at least I think so but I still don't think he's good enough for David.
I really loved this book and cannot wait for the 3rd one to come out! I'm seriously chomping at the bit to find out whats gonna happen next! Cannot recommend these books enough!

This was 3.5 read for me. Quick and enjoyable and the characters were more relatable this time around. I liked Jo and River but I did not feel much of a connection between them. Though hopefully write about main characters that are polygamous since in this world werewolves are polygamous and we had seen secondary characters in happy polygamous relations. Though am very wary about it. I have become more comfortable about my views on polygamous relationships. Personally this is not the type of arrangement that suits me but I understand that just like polygamy isn't for everyone, neither is monogamy. Though am not sure about how the author would handle that. Her polygamous characters at this point have been those that completely buy into the power structure of werewolves and just go with it. That's one of my big turn offs about this series. I do not like the elements of control from the alphas. But this is that kind of book so I guess I'll stomach it but I still cannot stop rolling my eyes at a lot of the behavior by the alphas.
UPDATE: Apparently I am getting that polygamous book. The third book is called Third Mate. Which is going to be the sequel to this one. I wonder how Jax is going to handle David taking Brooks as a mate. Hopefully he will have a say in it.

This is the sequel to First Omega and here we see David’s story with Jax. David is second alpha in command of the pack and Jax is his human lover. This is quite a problem for many in the pack because they don’t want to be involved with humans at all. There is some angst in this story between David and Jax in that they are very much in love‑‑you can really feel the love—but they are caught between their two worlds. If only Jax would agree to be bitten by David and therefore be turned, they could be mated and problem solved. But Jax refuses so this causes more stress for the two of them. There is increasing turmoil in the pack. And the humans who have been visiting from the Congress have created more problems. Things get critical when the people Jax work with and trust kidnap David and another packmate.

This second book in the series is even better than the first. The action has stepped up several notches. Pack politics are getting heated. Many more relationships are forming within the pack that make the story even more interesting. The secondary characters are all just as lovable and interesting as the main characters. I read this book in one sitting. I couldn’t put it down.

A Joyfully Jay review.

4 stars

I liked Second Alpha a bit more than I did First Omega. It’s not that I think David and Jax are better characters than River and Josiah. They’re about equal in my mind, but I enjoyed reading more about the human/werewolf congress, the conspiracies, and the struggle to maintain a love relationship as the tension between the two species continues to grow.

David is a grumpy Alpha. He loves Jax, but it’s almost as if he’s loving him begrudgingly. I could feel his confusion and insecurity. He continues to question whether it’s worth it to stay with Jax because Jax doesn’t want to be bitten, even though he claims to love David. David wonders if he should just mate with Brooks, a werewolf Beta who has wanted David for years. This isn’t a light and fluffy romance. There’s angst, and sadness, jealousy, and even a bit of anger. I found myself really feeling sorry for David. He wasn’t my favorite character in the first book, but in Second Alpha, he really spoke to me.
