Naomi is restless. She's on her gap year and stuck at home with her parents while her friends are travelling or at university. Then she meets Danny, a mysterious and intense musician who opens her eyes to a whole new world around her. Danny is exciting and talented, but he also has a dark, destructive side.
3.5 stars. This was a quick read but it was also quite deep. I could relate to Naomi a lot, both her personality and her relationship with Danny. Danny seemed so perfect in the beginning, as did their relationship. But what started as perfect slowly unraveled as flaws were uncovered. I think this book did a pretty good job showing what mental illness looks like and how it can be hidden. This book truly captured young love and how it feels to be swept up in a first love, as well as the ups and downs of first loves. I was interested in how this book would end but at times, it did feel a little slow. But overall it was a good book and had good representation.
"Isn't it weird how the truly significant days of your life often begin as the most banal? There you are, just minding your own business, doing something boring and ordinary like buying a Kitkat or, in my case, catching the number 29 bus home from work, and boom! thee most momentous and life-changing vent happens to you!"
Naomi is stuck at home with her parents whilst her friends are out traveling and going to university. Upon a bus journey, she meets the mysterious Danny, who just happens to be a lead singer in a band. What starts off as a nice friendly encounter, turns into a relationship. This is a love story between Naomi & Danny. When reading, you see a typical relationship: the ups and downs and the emotions that the characters are showing. But then there is also sadness and depression hidden beneath the cracks. In terms of character, I feel I can relate to Naomi. When we're young and in love, we are all crazy for that one person, and all opinions of them and situations don't matter apart from our opinion and our significant others. This is the same for Naomi. When her parents or friend look down upon Danny, she doesn't want to talk to them and will go off with Danny to be around him, rather than them. I feel respect towards her when she sticks up for herself in terms of career or what she wants. The chapters in this book are a nice size; they're not too long, not too short, which is nice. I thought the storyline was interesting. We see a normal relationship with the usual good and bad sides. You can really understand that there is love between the two. When I read the depressing bits, I even felt for the characters and was longing for them to get past their troubles. This is the first book I read from Hilary Freeman, and I enjoyed it. The ending was quite sad, but I respect Naomi in her decisions, and I really hope that she finds happiness again. I gave this book four stars because it deserved it. I don't think it would be a book I would read again, but it also wasn't a bad book. Whether it's worth buying, that's up to you. If you enjoy stories about life, romance and its complications, then go for it. Overall it as a good book & I recommend to all who enjoy these kinds of books. Happy reading =)
For me personally I would say this is one of my favorite books. It was one of the first I had read that delved in mental illness and relationship issues. And was really quite relatable with what was happening in my life at the time. It really is quite realistic and mature in that it deals with the ups and downs of a relationship and doesn't just cut to the butterflies and faeries. I can see how someone might see it as unrealistic or perhaps mental in terms of what Danny was doing, but actually for someone who has been in a relationship where your partner is mentally ill, it can be easy to connect to and so heart wrenching to read. I really felt for Danny and Naomi. So if your looking for a read that somewhat realistically explores mental health, relationship issues and first love then I highly recommend it.
An amazing touching novel! :) This seems like a typical love story when you first start reading it, they are so sweet and in love...you reallly get to know both Naomi and Danny thanks to Hilary's awesome writing Their relationship progresses and they are really serious about each other...but when she moves in with him...she finds out a whole other side to her sweet perfect Danny and his dark secret. Well this book made me absolutely sob at the end! :( But it was worth a read!!! Deffo!
This book is so freaking unrealistic the only way I liked. It in high school because I was self obbsessd with romance book ( still am) but reading this agin it really sad unnatural the guy sound sexy and fine at firs Danny but he's a freaking nut case okay he started self harming .
The main Naomi was as thick as a brick my gosh there were so many sighs this Danny was a crack pot I mean good for you you dumped him finally (rolling the eye balls ) jeez At the end I felt Danny need a kick up the ass and Naomi need a kick in the back get your life sorted girl know what a crack pot is like Danny New book title for this is : thick girl loves a phyco
This is one of the first books I have ever finished I read it as a young teenager in high school and loved it! It is an intense read and really shows how powerful and sometimes cruel a first love can be. I had a very rough relationship that went on for 4 years of my teenage life and could really feel for Naomi as she went through, obviously more dramatic, the same things I was going through. In the end this book helped me get out of that tough relationship and as much as it is just a fiction young adult book I will always cherish it for the hope it gave me at my time of need
