Ally Blue

Ally Blue penned her first tale at age eight, relating the breathless terror of her little sister’s not-quite-fatal encounter with a bee in the backyard. That was the beginning of a lifelong love affair with storytelling. She now writes gay romance of all flavors, and has recently branched into writing her first love: horror. She continues her neverending quest to scare herself. She is not a hippie or a brain surgeon, no matter what her kids’ friends say.

This was another great addition to this series. Poor Adrian, that was a lot of a little boy to go through but I'm happy that Sam stepped up and helped him. This one was pretty scary with the big bad showing up at their house. I think we are going to see more cooperation & less nastiness between them & Janine; even though I still don't like her.

Wanted to shoot Janine and I hated her quick turn around. Still loving Sam though, and Adrien, too. Bo still rather irritates me, and I enjoyed the other secondaries, too.

Story:

My favorite of the BCPI books so far

Warning: This review might contain what some people consider SPOILERS.

Rating: 8/10

PROS:
- This story focuses on Bo and Sam’s relationship with Bo’s sons, and I really enjoyed seeing their interactions. The younger boy, Sean, is sweet and energetic and totally accepting of not only his father’s homosexuality but also his father’s new partner. A lot of what Sean says is very endearing. But it’s the older boy, Adrien, who I found to be the most interesting character in the book. He’s got the sullenness of a preteen dealing with his parents’ divorce, but he’s also innocent and fragile and yet at the same time, shockingly powerful.
- I said when I reviewed Volume 4, Closer, that I was getting a little tired of the whole interdimensional portal thing reappearing in EVERY book, but I take that back now, because there’s a delightful new development on that front that makes the storyline more interesting.
- I’ve complained before about not being able to tell the secondary characters apart because they aren’t fleshed out, but they’re starting to become more memorable. Dean is no longer the only secondary character I care about, although he’s still by far my favorite of the other investigators who work with Sam and Bo.

CONS:
- There are hints in the earlier books that Bo’s marriage wasn’t all that great and that his ex-wife isn’t the most pleasant of women, but dadGUM. She is possibly the least likeable female character I’ve ever encountered in this genre, and a lot of m/m writers tend to vilify women a bit (even though a lot of them are women themselves). Seriously, though, the majority of scenes in which Bo’s ex appears are INFURIATING. And it’s not just that they’re not fun to read; it’s that I didn’t really understand WHY she’s so horrible.
- On the whole I didn’t find Sam’s and Bo’s actions and attitudes as frustrating in this volume as I did in Volume 4, but there are still some frustrating individual scenes. Particularly with regard to Sam’s interactions with Bo’s ex-wife: in a few cases I wanted Bo to stand up for Sam more forcefully than he does.

Overall comments: I’m a goner by this point in the BCPI series, so I really can’t give an objective opinion about whether you’d like this book without having read the earlier ones in the series. This volume has a better plot than some of the earlier ones, if only because the introduction of new characters adds an extra element of intrigue that is absent in the earlier books. Most of the books in the series have some romance, some sex, a decent plot, and a bit of creepiness, so overall they’re a nice mix.

This series is getting better with every book. In this one Bo's children factor in heavily, which is nice because before the epilogue of the last book, we had only every heard of them, but never met them. This book is nicely paced and a real page turner. Except for one ill placed (and kind of boring) sex scene this book was a real improvement over the rest of the series.

Peeking ahead this looks to be the last book with Sam and Bo as the main characters and I don't feel finished with them. I want more resolution with these guys and Sam's abilities and Bo's leg. Most importantly I feel like I need some permanence to their relationship. Right now it seems there is nothing official. Like the papers so that Sam can be the next of kin. And so that in an argument Bo can't keep saying that Sam isn't family. Maybe we will get some of that through while spending time with the other characters. And even though I know that Andre's story would have to be m/f, I'd like to see him find someone.

This is the best of the lot so far. I would not go so far as to say you could start the series with this novel, I think there's too much by book 5 that would need a bit more explaining, but I do feel you wouldn't be totally lost. And the sex is hot as always.

SPOILERS!

There's a real story, one that touches on a new subject--poltergeists/teen-caused paranormal activity--rather than everything being about the inter-dimensional gates (though of course the gates come into it before the end), and it finds a way to resolve an issue involving a woman without killing her. Hopefully moving forward Bo's ex-wife will be less of a stereotype. I don't like that Sam had to risk his life to be considered worthy to breath air on Janine's planet, but considering her vitriol in previous books, I believe that that is what it would take. I'm also not in love with the fact that Bo & Janine's kid is surprise! a psycho kenetic like Sam. Way to bring Sam into the parenting loop.

Finally, I got my wish in this book - Bo's kids played an important role. I wanted to know if the kids would ever be featured in a prominent role. I liked the kids even though they didn't right away accept Sam into their lives - after all how can they wrap their mind around the huge fact that 1) their parents are getting divorced and 2) their dad is gay and already has a boyfriend. The wife of Bo - omg! I would have bitch-slapped her. It reminded me of GA Hauser's female characters. They drive you insane with their hate but then in the end they redeem themselves. Thank God the same happened here! Otherwise it would have left a bad taste in the mouth. I wasn't surprised when it turned out to be that he too has abilities like Sam - nothing like the danger to get two people close!

The thing that annoys me most about m/m books that include an ex-wife or ex-girlfriend is how that woman is protrayed. ALWAYS is this person first introduced and protrayed as a homophobic assholish bitch wheter they eventually redeem themselves or not, and I HATE that. Not all exes that have been left for a person of the same sex are like that. Granted, probably more are than are not, but not EVERY SINGLE ONE and that seems to be the character I always stumble upon when reading this type of story.
That's the only reason I gave this book 3 instead of 4 stars. Other than that fact, this book falls right into step with the rest as far as how it was written and the story told.

Whoa, and I thought the last book was intense. This one just takes it to another level. Sam and Bo have an established relationship, and Bo's two kids spend time with them. Adrian, however, doesn't seem to care for it, and he's starting to exhibit the same powers as Sam. I was hanging on to the edge of my seat until the very end, because I never knew what would happen next. I hope there are more adventures for Sam and Bo, but it seems like the author will be taking a break from their storyline to explore some others.

So far I think this one was my favorite of the series. I liked seeing the interaction between Bo, Sam and Bo's sons. The paranormal elements were pretty proportioned with the sex scenes and made for a fun read. I did have a moment where I thought Bo was bad for Sam. Since reading book 4 I felt that whenever Bo gets angry with Sam he becomes abusive and it's no different in this book when he had angry sex with Sam. It's a bit scary to read. I really liked Adrien and I look forward to getting to his book.

I've read this entire series and think it's amazing. The characters are so flushed out you might think this was taken from real life. The situations are so clear and concise that you can truly imagine them happening in front of you. All I wanted to do was root for them as a couple and when Bo's son starts exhibiting some telekinesis, I was beyond thrilled!! (that means more books for me)
A real fantastic series that ANYONE who enjoys M/M paranormal with fall in love with!!! Thank you Ally Blue for a wonderful escape!!

Another great instalment in this series. And while some others might find that the author has shown Bo's ex-wife to be a stereotypical bitch, and unnecessarily nasty, I don't think it to be so. In fact, I find ex-wives who have no issue with their husband leaving them for another man to be very odd and unrealistic. I'm glad however, that they come to an agreement where the kids don't continue to suffer!

I think this is my favorite of the series so far. It was neat to see more of Bo's kids and the dynamic with his ex. The personal touch made this a lot more interesting than the other "haunting of the week" type plots from the previous books. And of course it's Ally, so the character interactions are great. Good book!

If you like homo-erotic male fiction with a little supernatural twist thrown in, the BCPI series is great. Some really graphic scenes in both supernatural events & male-on-male encounters. I'd have preferred more events & fewer encounters ... but that's just me.

4.5 stars. Very good paranormal m/m romance in which Sam and Bo struggle against Bo's ex-wife in order to help Bo's son control his potentially dangerous telekinesis.

Interesting twist to the ghost story. The concept is quite unique and well written. The characters are likeable as well.
