“I was no one’s father, no one’s lover, no one’s husband, no one’s friend. But now, this word… 'Amour'… I think I understand it.”

Jean Valjean is determined to protect Fantine and her daughter, Cosette. Eventually he makes his way to the poor girl and finds a new purpose in life. Years later, a young man named Marius finds out the truth of his father and ends up meeting a group of idealistic revolutionaries known as the Friends of the ABC.

And so begins my favorite part of this story – and, accordingly, thus returns the 5/5 star rating. Before I start blabbing on about everything I loved, I just wanna say, yet again, that the art is great, the character designs are wonderful (though I have such deeply ingrained fandom images of some of the Amis in my head that I had to consciously try and get rid of them while reading this) and I like the way Takahiro Arai adapts this story. Yeah, a lot of pruning has to be done cause the book by Hugo is not called "The Brick" for nothing, but Takahiro Arai has kept everything important, and most importantly, he has retained the heart of the book in his adaptation.

First of all, I love all the Valjean and Cosette stuff. I am a huge sucker for stories where a grumpy, lonely, loveless man accidentally adopts a child and learns what it means to love through that relationship. And to make it even better, Valjean is also a way in which Cosette learns what it means to be loved and cared for, to be safe and to trust someone. The abuse inflicted on her by the Thenardiers, but especially the Madame, was very well depicted and made me extremely sad. Seeing Valjean, first depicted once again as the calm, noble lion, shining bright light, save Cosette, made me very emotional. Lastly, speaking of Cosette, I wanna mention how cool it was to see little glimpses of empathy in Eponine for Cosette: they are not friends, they never have and never will be, but when they are eating, Cosette on the floor and so on, there is a sadness in Eponine's eyes, as if she feels at least a little bad for her. I liked that little moment, because it showed that Eponine is somewhat better than her parents.

And now, on to Marius Pontmercy and all the stuff he brings to this story. I am not the biggest fan of his character - ne is annoying, silly and a bumbling fool – but I absolutely love how the plot begins to develop once he comes along. I love the political debates he gets into, I love the way the Thenardiers come back (and I love Eponine) and I love, with my whole heart, the Friends of the ABC. Their introduction was so, so good. Courfeyrac saying, to Marius, “It seems I must drag you into our revolution" and then taking him to meet his friends, knowing the poor boy would be ideologically trashed the second he reveals himself a Bonapartist is lowkey hilarious. He really just looked at Marius and thought, Hmm, this idiot needs fixing, let me introduce him to all my pals who will verbally neuter him. Iconic, true chaotic bestie behaviour.

As a Grantaire enthusiast, I loved the way he was written and drawn. I love that for once, he isn't made cute or handsome. As also something of an Enjolras enthusiast, I have to tip my hat to Takahiro Arai for his design. Enjolras really is a character that can ever truly be captured in anime or manga: beauty like that can only be achieved in this art form. Also, him being depicted, in Marius's head, as a burning sun, the center of the light of Musain that so disturbs Marius... So good.

On to the next volume!

Wiiiiihhh... bagian terfavorit saya dari cerita Les Miserables! Perjumpaan Om Jean Valjean dengan Cosette kecil <333
Uuuuuh... waktu si Om ngebeliin boneka yang harganya selangit itu buat Cosette, saya sampe terenyuh huwehuwe.... Terus, saya sukaaaaa banget penggambaran Cosette yang tidur di atas singa emas waktu akhirnya berhasil dibawa pergi Om Jean. Om Jean pas jadi singa emang jadi makin menawan(?)~ <333
Uuuuuhhhhh.... Oooooommmm, Gie padamuuuuuhhhhhh uuuwoooo saya paling gak tahan sama om-om yang ngurusin bocah sendirian dan disayang banget kayak gini uwowowowoo bikin iriiiiiiii uwooooo iri sama Cosetteeeeeee!!! Saya juga kepengen punya om-setengah-singa(?) kayak Om Jean Valjean <333

*berhentilah fangirling Valjean, Gie*

I advise you to read this only when you are in a good mood... because the story can seriously make you miserable. On the other hand, reading stories like this can make you apreciate more the life you have.

Continues to be solid but I can tell there's a lot of the story getting cut out and I wonder if the relationship building is stronger in the novel.

When I visit a bookstore the other day, I realized that the fifth volume was already published. OTW buying it.

Marius! It seems like I forgot because I read the novel long ago, but he's actually a pretty decent character. I love how he's being pictured here, because he was not just "Cossette's love interest" anymore. The conflict between he and his grandfather, and his father, is nice to see.

Takahiro Arai brings again beauty in Hugo's saudade masterpiece.
Oh God, just another tome left. I am not ready for this.
