Si passa così dalla "rappresentazione" nelle sue varie forme - gli specchi, il teatro, la scrittura, il sogno - al problema della serialità nelle arti, alle congetture sui mondi della fantascienza, alle questioni di metodo nelle scienze umane, nella filosofia del gioco, nella teoria della comunicazione.

About the author

Umberto Eco was an Italian medievalist, philosopher, semiotician, novelist, cultural critic, and political and social commentator. In English, he is best known for his popular 1980 novel The Name of the Rose, a historical mystery combining semiotics in fiction with biblical analysis, medieval studies and literary theory, as well as Foucault's Pendulum, his 1988 novel which touches on similar themes.

Eco wrote prolifically throughout his life, with his output including children's books, translations from French and English, in addition to a twice-monthly newspaper column "La Bustina di Minerva" (Minerva's Matchbook) in the magazine L'Espresso beginning in 1985, with his last column (a critical appraisal of the Romantic paintings of Francesco Hayez) appearing 27 January 2016. At the time of his death, he was an Emeritus professor at the University of Bologna, where he taught for much of his life. In the 21st century, he has continued to gain recognition for his 1995 essay "Ur-Fascism", where Eco lists fourteen general properties he believes comprise fascist ideologies.

La puntuación nada tiene que ver con Umberto Eco ni con su forma de escritura. Ni más faltaba. La puntuación en sí va a quienes estuvieron encargados de la selección de los textos para esta antología, la cual considero muy desacertada e inconsistente. Más de un texto en esta antología se refiere a autores, obras literarias, filósofos, o fenómenos de una especificidad tal que hace absolutamente incomprensible y poco agradable la lectura para quien no tenga un dominio sobre determinado tema. Si bien la antología acierta al categorizar los textos por temáticas, considero que el criterio de selección debió centrarse en textos de problemas mucho más abiertos para el lector general y no que se convirtiera en sí en un texto para "estudiar" a Eco. Quizá habría sido más acertado, para elaborar una antología de Eco, seleccionar aquellas exquisitas columnas de opinión con las que solía deleitarnos todas las semanas en el matutino italiano para el cual él escribía. El título "De los Espejos y Otros Ensayos" debería haberse reemplazado por algo como "De Los Espejos y Otros Ensayos Sobre Semiótica y Literatura".

Een verzameling essays van semioticus Umberto Eco over een varieteit aan onderwerpen, waaronder, zoals de titel beloofd, een verhandeling over in hoeverre spiegelbeelden ook tekens voorstellen die los staan van het gespiegelde object zelf. De meeste verhalen zijn uitgewerkte teksten van lezingen die de schrijver ooit heeft gegeven, maar die echter zo bol staan van de waardeoordelen, dat de conclusies vaak onbevredigend zijn.

Gelezen in de nederlandse vertaling, waarvan zelfs de tweede druk nog vol spelfouten staat. Van enkele zinnen rijst het vermoeden dat er een italiaanse woordspeling aan ten grondslag ligt, die niet in de vertaling is meegekomen of geannoteerd.

In this age of online shock-value headlines, conspiracy theories and general lack of critical thinking, it's a breath of fresh air to read essays by Umberto Eco, which provide the opposite.

I must say, however, that while the first essay on mirrors was excellent, some of the others dragged on a bit and were a tad repetitive (which makes sense, being a collection of articles, essays, etc.). I also enjoyed his thoughts on Dumas' Count of Montecristo (I had no idea he had been paid by the word).

Si tratta di una ricca raccolta di saggi, interventi, riflessioni, articoli di Eco su tematiche in qualche modo relative alla comunicazione, all'espressione, alla semiotica. Il ritmo è discontinuo, e non tutti i pezzi catturano l'attenzione con la stessa intensità. Eccellente il primo studio sugli specchi.

Wie auch Über Gott und die Welt versammelt dieser Band vor allem wissenschaftliche Aufsätze von Eco zu verschiedensten Themen. Überlegungen zur Semiologie von Spiegeln, zur Gattungsdefinition der Science Fiction, zur Übersetzung des Monte Christo und vieles mehr stehen hier nebeneinander. Unterhaltsam ist die Lektüre allemal, wenn auch nur selten der Witz und die funkelnde Brillanz aufscheint, die Über Gott und die Welt auszeichnen. Abzuraten ist jedoch allen Leser/innen, die nicht geisteswissenschaftlich-philologisch interessiert sind und nur den literarischen bzw. ironisch-essayistischen Eco genießen wollen.
