Great Quick and a True Pocket Guide

I love how the book is not littered with Jargon but also not made too easy to understand and miss out the fact that soem of the topics are complex.

Jillian Howard manages to deliver a book which stands the test of time and which provides solid investment advice.
She does lay on her self promotion a little thick, though, which comes across as egotistical.

Being financially savvy feels overwhelming for many people, and the world of investing can seem deliberately complicated. What’s the difference between shares and stocks? What are bonds, and how are unit trusts different from index funds? And what, exactly, are endowments?

This is where The Best Pocket Guide Ever for Wealth-building Investment comes in. While it’s not the be-all and end-all of financial advice, it does exactly what it claims to do: simplify the complex world of investing. It gives readers the confidence to begin managing and growing their money with clarity - without talking down to them.

Author Jillian Howard brings solid credentials to the table, holding a B.Comm degree from UNISA, a CFP qualification from the University of the Free State, and a Results Coaching qualification. More importantly, she knows how to meet readers where they are. The guide opens with budgeting and saving - concepts that sound simple, yet are often people’s biggest stumbling blocks.

Howard then introduces a risk assessment questionnaire designed to help readers understand which investment options align best with their goals, budget, and tolerance for risk. This self-awareness becomes a useful foundation for the next section, where she clearly explains the various investment types available, outlining how each works, along with their respective risks and benefits.

First published in 2014, this little booklet has remained a bestseller for over a decade. The latest edition has been updated to include guidance on offshore and online investments, making it relevant to today’s increasingly digital and global financial landscape.

Whether bought as a gift or as a personal starting point, this pocket guide is ideal for complete investment novices. Howard simplifies complex concepts and makes them relatable to the average Joe, often injecting her wry humour into her explanations - adding warmth and humanity to an otherwise dry topic.

While she doesn’t flood the reader with jargon, Howard uses the correct terminology throughout, ensuring readers are properly informed. She also consistently highlights potential risks - a refreshing and responsible approach.

Armed with this foundational knowledge, readers will be better equipped to make informed decisions, whether through a financial advisor (there’s even a dedicated chapter on how to find and work with one) or - for the braver souls - independently.

You won’t find get-rich-quick promises here - just practical knowledge. Because sometimes the smartest investment you can make is learning how money really works.
