CHRISTIAN ROMANTIC SUSPENSE. THE PLEASANT HEARTS Series unwraps the journeys of four orphaned Christian sisters, all in their thirties, and told they'll never marry. To them, marriage did appear too distant as each struggled to build a career while single, and communication between the sisters was less than stellar. But when God stepped in, He showed that He could turn their struggles into triumphs-if they let Him. UNCOMMON GROUND , begins this series, focused on Stella, the eldest of the Hearts sisters.
UNCOMMON GROUND Widowed and now single, Stella Heart juggled between managing her career and struggling to communicate with her teenage daughter, Sharon. Their common ground crumbled beneath their different beliefs about God. While Stella believed in God, her daughter didn't. Sharon instead held strongly to what they taught her in school--until the day the ground physically gave way--altering both their perspectives about each other, and more than one person's resistance to God. Stella's concerns multiplied in the ensuing chaos after she met Michael, a Christian man with a mysterious past whom danger seemed to follow- and she wondered how many more unseen twists God trusted her to handle. Can she trust Michael beyond what he appears to be hiding from her, or will her own fears cloud her judgement when extreme danger surfaces?

I've decided to stop reading this book at 7% into my Kindle. I am interested in the story, but am finding small editing issues, and I'd just rather read something else. I hope that the author keeps writing, and that she devotes more resources to the editing process.
Uncommon Ground (2016, Life Fountain), first in the Pleasant Hearts series by Joy Ohagwu, is a Christian romanctic suspense. This book is part of a four-book series, and since each book focuses on a different sister, I'm guessing that each one is standalone. I chose to try this book because I don't have many authors whose last names begin with the letter 'O.'
Rating: I'm skipping the rating on this one.
The heroine: Stella Heart-Parsons is a widower and medical researcher. She has a single teenage daughter, the very sullen Sharon.
Christian elements:
*The book opens with the following verse:
"Behold, I will do a new thing, now it shall spring forth; shall you not know it? I will even make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the dessert. Isaiah 43:19
*The dedication is "To Jesus, Giver of new Beginnings."
*Stella's daughter and coworker are non-believers. (Not Christian)
Is it clean/chaste? I'm guessing it is, but I can't make any claims.
What I liked:
*The cover art is lovely!
*I'm curious about the plot. Apparently, an earthquake is forthcoming, and I'm curious whether Stella resolves her issues with her teenager.
What I didn’t like:
*While I'm intrigued by the plot so far, I'm finding sentences requiring more editing. Often, it's a matter of inserting/changing a word or changing a verb tense. An example at 3%
"Instead of an answer, the sealed curtain - Sharon's face - propped with the curve of a coming smile."
I am not sure, but I think the idea here is that what the author means is "was propped open" rather than "propped." Sharon's face had been previously described as a sealed curtain, so I do understand that.
Upon reading some sentences, I was fuzzy as to the meaning. The following example is at 3% in the Kindle version.
"Her [Sharon's] hair, which Stella had groomed until Sharon prided herself in its length and fiery-red lush, cascaded in a ponytail in contrast to White Oak's brightening blue morning skyline."
First, the noun form of lush should be used in this case, so the word should be lushness. And I have several questions about the above quote. Why is Stella grooming her teenage daughter's hair when the style is a simple ponytail? Why is Sharon not proud of her hair's length and fiery-red lushess until Stella had groomed it enough?
***********
The bottom line: This could well be a very interesting Christian romantic suspense. I would suggest people who would not be bothered by the needed editing give it a try. There seem to be a good number of good reviews, and I enjoyed the plot up to this point. I do own one more book by this author in a multi-author collection that I picked up for free, so I might try this author again at some point.
This book almost felt like it was two separate stories - the first half about Stella and the second half about Michael. I liked the characters of Stella and Michael so I think it was the way the story was told that did not appeal to me. I was very confused by the wording in the first couple chapters. I am not sure if the wording was just poorly selected (ie needed better editing) or if it was intentionally awkward to try and increase the tension between Stella and her daughter. The whole earthquake/natural disaster was also confusing. I even considered stopping reading at several points in the first half of the book due to the clumsy/awkward language. I persevered and did enjoy the second half of the book more but not enough to overcome my disappointment in the first part of the book. The few explanations that were given mid-book to resolve the mother/daughter issues and the earthquake in the first half of the book felt like band-aids and were not satisfactory as so many questions were left unanswered.
If this was the first book I read by Joy Ohagwu, it probably would be the last but fortunately I have also read "The New Rulebook" which I really enjoyed so I am going to chalk this one up to a bad reading day and expect that I will like the next book I read by Joy Ohagwu better.
Sex - none (a little hand-holding and a kiss at the altar) Language - none Violence - reference made to some deaths that occur but no descriptions; some characters are injured in various ways at the hands of nature and of men - blood is mentioned but not graphic in detail Religion - a number of references to prayer, desire for others to be saved, God's protection and help
Uncommon Ground by Joy Ohagwu is a Christian thriller. It is the first book in the Pleasant Hearts series. Prayer is a major theme within the novel. Sometimes prayer is our only course of action as events spiral out of control. Prayer does not have to be long and elaborate. It is simply talking to God. The novel also deals with the area of faith versus fear. If one focuses on God and trusts Him, then fear will lose its power. Uncommon Ground shows how complex family relationships can be. Sometimes it is only when relationships are threatened and about to be lost that you realise what you have. Grief has the power to do harm to belief and trust in God. Grief and fear can tear one away from Him but God loves us, and once we have said yes to God, He will not let us go. It is only a question of when and not if the prodigal will return. One cannot force our loved ones to accept Jesus. The decision must be theirs alone. "Faith in Christ was a beautiful experience your loved ones needed to accept on their own." Our job is to pray for their salvation and leave the convicting to God. I really enjoy Joy Ohagwu's writings and devoured Uncommon Ground in just one sitting. I am looking forward to the subsequent books in the series. I received this book for free in exchange for a fair and honest review. No monetary compensation was received and all views expressed are my own.
Okay, I don't want to be ungrateful but this book could have done with some serious stylistic editing. The wording is rather long - winded and despite a quite dramatic beginning it left me emotionless. Maybe the ARC is not the final edition and there have been changes in the actual e-book, or maybe it is just an early piece of work and the author has improved her style since.
I struggled from the start to read this book. It's the first book in the series and I couldn't figure out what was going on or why. I didn't care about the characters. It was just one hot mess and for me, it never got better. Glad it was a free book or I'd be mad I spend good money on it.
The book started off a bit slow for me to the point that I had to make myself continue reading. I really got lost in the first part. However, the second part of the book really started to pick up and was incredibly interesting and was difficult to put it down. In the end, I'm glad I kept reading.
The story begins with explosion. What follows is chaos. This was the point where I got lost and couldn't figure out really what was happening. However, when I think back on this, I think the confusion I felt as I read this, actually worked. The story, at this point, was meant to be chaotic. The characters were trying to escape certain death and make their way to safety while at the same time, trying to find or reunite with their family and friends. It was chaotic. Imagine being in a natural disaster and the panic and chaos that ensues from that and you will have a fairly good idea of what this part of the story was like.
Between the first and second parts of the story, mother and daughter are reunited. The mother is already a Christian, but the daughter had fallen away for a time. The disaster brings her back to her Christian faith. At first, this seemed to me to have happened too fast, but when I thought about it further, I realize it really didn't. Several days had past between the time the two last saw one another and the time they were reunited. Also, she was already a Christian, but life got in the way causing her to loose faith.
The second part of the book was far more interesting to me. I enjoy reading mysteries and trying to figure out "who done it". Both the leading lady and leading man, in this story, were faced with a surprising revelation of which they both managed to take in stride. This second half has mystery and a bit of suspense. It also reveals a great deal about the relationships of the characters. The closeness between the leading lady, her sisters, and her daughter can easily be seen through their reactions when the leading lady has to leave home suddenly for an emergency. The emergency relates to the leading man and his family and it is during this times that this family are drawn closer together. The leading lady also builds a close relationship with the leading man's family and has also come to realize how much he really means to her.
Despite the fact (or perhaps because of) that it started rather slow, this book is definitely worth reading.
My review today is on the Romantic Suspense, Uncommon Ground. This is book one in the Pleasant Hearts Series. I don't think I have read any of Joy's books before; I will read more of her work. I was asked to read this one and wasn't required to review it. I felt I must review it because I really enjoyed it and I want to share it with you. This book is well written, action packed and full of faith. I know you are going to love it.
Today is Stella Heart-Parsons last day. She has been working in a medical research lab and as she returns to pack up more of her things she fine some kind of an issue with her young assistant and her seventeen year old daughter, Sharon. The two refuse to answer her question but before figuring out what is going on, there is something booming outside; the glass windows shatter, the floors quake, the road outside the window goes up like a wave and then comes down splitting the ground wide open. They run for their lives but somehow they are separated. Sharon gets on a bus but Stella can't get to it on time. She starts a journey to find her daughter and get them to safety. The world seems to be torn apart as Stella travels on her search. She is rescued by a man named Michael. He agrees to help her find her daughter.
Michael Huddleston is on a retreat. His boss, the pastor sent him out to a place in the mountains to get closer to God. The place is worse than rustic and he decides he is going to go back early. He can't stay a week in this place. Three men come and take over the camp. He rescues Stella and then must keep her safe from the three men. The leader agrees she can stay if she shares Michael's room. Michael cares for her injuries but on the second night the men are drunk and come after Stella. They must run for their lives.
A journey to get out of the war zone like terrain and find Sharon and get help for the people trapped at the disaster site. God has a plan for these two, a plan for a hope and a future. God has a plan for you too, a good plan and not for evil. Give Him your heart and watch Him move in your life.
Stella Heart struggles to communicate with her teenage daughter, Sharon. Disaster strikes. Sharon disappears. While searching Stella meets Michael, a Christian with a mysterious past whom danger seemed to follow. Can she trust Michael?
The book opens with intense drama and continues throughout the book. Where's Sharon? As a parent, I can imagine the horror of losing a child in the midst of a disaster.
The book kept my interest the entire read. I look forward to the next book.
The Pleasant Hearts Christian Suspense Series unwraps the journeys of four orphaned Christian sisters, all in their thirties, and told they'll never marry. Another excellent book from this author! Stella and her daughter, Sharon, have been having some problems since the father/dad died. Sharon has lost her faith in God since losing her father. While at work, an explosion occurs, later discovered to be an earthquake that ruptured gas lines. Trying to escape the danger, Stella and Sharon get separated. The story takes us on Stella's daring adventure to find her daughter. Along the way, she meets a man in witness protection who is on a spiritual retreat. Their adventures in searching for Sharon and any help for the people left behind will keep you spellbound. A spiritual adventure you won't want to put down!
I just finished this first book in the collection. This is a lovely story of perseverance and hope. I have two things that I would have liked to be different: 1) more description of later events and fewer of the earlier events because they don't seem to be followed up on later in this book; and, 2) a different way to pass time. Some events take place much later and I was left wondering, what happened to get me there. Overall, a good story.
This was a good book because the author kept the suspense going all the way to the end. First the earthquake, then Stella and Michael's harrowing experience at the Reserve, and then on to life when they found Sharon and all was well - or so they thought. Stella takes her time answering Michael's declaration of love and then he goes missing and she discovers she has deep rooted feelings for him. How it all plays out with a blended family in the end made for a good ending to the suspense.
I received a free copy of this book and I am voluntarily reviewing it.
This was a great book. I look forward to reading more from this author especially in regards to the other sisters. This was a hard book to put down. The plot was well thought out and the characters were so believable. I just LOVED them all. I would highly recommend this book to anyone.
I really enjoyed this story even though I got a little confused at the beginning. I thought the story became apocalyptic when Stella was wandering in the woods. This happily ever after is filled with the power of having faith and hope in God. Listen, obey and leave your problems in God’s hands.
Uncommon ground is a wonderful name for this story.
This book was totally unexpected. I loved that nothing happened in the way I expected. The only thing that bothered me is when they are at the rescue was why they were trying to get people to pledge to a man before they offered help. Outside of that one section it was a great story.
The Christian values of this book are spot on and reminded me of how often I should be praying and asking for God's guidance. That being said, it was an awesome romantic adventure. Sometimes, it was a little hard to follow and I believe kidnapping is spelled with two "p"s. However, it was a great read well worth your time.
Enjoyed reading this book. The characters are intelligent and have struggles similar to everyday people...love, family, jobs, beliefs, etc. when a character is believable, the reader laughs, cries, and empathizes with them. Will faith, family and love prevail? I found the faith based content to help with understanding myself and others when there is temptation and life experiences.
If it wasn’t for quite a few oddly worded spots in the story, I would’ve given it five stars. Please do read it if you enjoy suspense romance that clean and with a strong emphasis on faith. The plot made sense to me and the characters were interesting. That made me want to keep reading despite the wording issues. I believe it really is worth your time.
I wondered for the first third of the book if I really wanted to keep reading and I am so glad that I did. I fell in love with the characters and the writing was great. I'm looking forward to the next book.
People who love Christian romance will enjoy Stella's story as she struggles to overcome obstacles both personally and physically. The author tends to skip thru time fairly frequently, leaving gaps in her wake but overall it was a good book.
This is a very exciting story. From the beginning, it captures your attention and doesn't let go. This book is for everyone who loves great Christian suspense!
In some ways an unusual book especially at the beginning. I had to wonder what it was about but when I got into the story I thoroughly enjoyed it. The spiritual quotes were good and added depth to the story.
I enjoyed this book by one of my favorite authors! I struggled to get through the first chapter, but I am glad I pushed through to read the book! A clean romantic suspense with plenty of plot twists and turns. Looking forward to beginning the next book in this series.
I had a little trouble getting into the book at the beginning but past that it was an awesome read. It's about growing, learning and becoming a family. It's about trust and hurt and overcoming odds. I thought that the characters were relatable and I loved the twist and turns.
I love Joy's books. This one did not disappoint. Just enough twists and turns to keep you interested. No spoilers here, you have to read it for yourself. It's worth it! Can't wait to read the next book in the series!
I liked the premise of the book. However, something was missing in the storyline. But I do not know what. Maybe it was the lack of chemistry and romance in the story. Would I reread this story? No. Will I read the next book in the story? Maybe.
Plenty of action, suspense and romance in this book! It is full of family issues, unexpected disasters, kidnapping and a great bond with God. Goodness always triumphs! Wonderfully written.
I really felt like I was the one who was feeling anxious going through the trials in this story as well as the good feelings. To me this is the best kind of book where you can immerse yourself and become part of the story.
Once again Joy has brought us a story so full of twists and turns you don't want to put the book down. Witness Protection, earth quack, a child lost and many more surprises. You will love this book
