After read the afterthoughts, I am thinking it was a great idea to publish these two books respectively actually. Because first, it has a gap for people to think as the former book for sure will create tons of responds. Second, people will realize maybe they judged too soon.
In the Afterthoughts, we are able to read a lot of letters and passionate, exciting responses from readers which all kinds of personal experiences. Gide wanted to say that after the first book and the trip, he began to realize a lot of things that he was not able to think about in the trip and while writing the book.
In the beginning, M.Yvon in his pamphlet Ce quest devenue la Révolution Russe has a quote that "The cause of this shortage is that the revolution was far more concerned in 'outdoing' capitalism"19. It is right, it sounds like a revenge. But can't we say the revolution is just a way to get back at the Capitalism?
There are more personal experiences in this book, as an example for people to understand what exactly is happening. For example "To join the Party, to get oneself admitted (which is by no means easy and demands, over and above special knowledge, perfect orthodoxy and a turn for swift and supple compliance) is the first and indispensable condition for success. " It may sounds ridiculous or interesting or unbelievable for people, but we do say, "if you cannot beat them, join them"31. I couldn't agree with this, as this notion gives you a wrong direction. If you want to be successful, first, get yourself dirty or get yourself with a party that will show to whom you belong to, then things will be settled.
And in the party, "Spying is one of the civic virtues. One is brought up to it from the earliest age and the child who 'tell tales' is complimented"33. That's right. spying is considered as loyalty. Like a mafia, Loyalty is one of the most important things in the party. Only difference is, there is a lie telling you that all you've done for the party is a personal sacrifice for the good Everyone, not for an individual, instead, you got personal benefit from be loyal in a mafia society.
Maybe it's just French people are too good at confessing, yes, it is the country where Confession was written. So Gide says, "I had read too many books of travel, enthusiastic descriptions, apologies. My great mistake was to have put too much faith in all these encomiums. And then too, everything that might have served me as a warning was said in such an acrimonious tone.... I am more inclined to believe love than hate. Yes, I was full of trust and confidence. 57", and then his apology goes on, "but I confess that the extraordinary privileged position (more so than in any other country in Europe) granted to anyone who holds a pen -- provided he writes in the proper spirit -- contributed not a little to open my eyes.59" This is important, because first, they satisfy your ego, and always show extremely respect, and then, you will speak for them unconsciously. Look at the expense later on Gide exposed! The expense!
Does it look familiar? Gide's book makes me seen a lot of doubles. The double of familiar routines that I've been up with. Is it uncanny when you see the double, meanwhile, you know also that you saw the dead? Like Stefan Zweig, everyone is USSR got to have a person tell them "you understand nothing about it"62. True. Only people who lived in that closure, that domestic machine feel it, however, they are forced to keep silence, or say, trained to be silent. After you've seen all of these in the eyes of Gide, you think "Are these really the men who made the Revolution? " I asked in my Back From the USSR, and answered:"No; they are the men who profit by it." 64
They created a happy paradise, for display, and etc. This is before the WWII. Gide wrote the best line, "Russia is not the place for lamentation -- but Siberia." 66 For anyone who saw this society, and went out of it will try to seek the truth, but I don't know where the truth is, not in Captalism for sure either, but I do know where the truth is NOT.
Sure, USSR betrayed all our hopes, 71, and now, it is a bygone era. So we feel completely free to talk about it, mock it, laugh at it, as if we are that better off. Please don't ignore that in the same battlefield, we who flee 50 paces are just laughing at those who fled 100 paces and fell.

Muy buena revisión de lo que debería ser el conocimiento y la opinión crítica de la izquierda, que brilla por su ausencia. Se nota que Gide, por otro lado con comportamientos cuestionables, estuvo y vivió la cuestión marxista, y, como San Pablo, se cayó del caballo a tiempo.
