The course of true love never did run smooth. Ryan is settling into his role as a new father and the royal consort of Mikos, the fierce and handsome Prince of Tygeria. He's still deeply in love and happy—most of the time. But the former Alliance colonel is a bit restless, and even though he loves his child and his mate, he needs a bit more to occupy his time. Mikos thinks giving him more babies to care for will help, but Ryan comes up with a different idea for some diversion and physical challenge by forming his own team for the dangerous Arena Games.

Meanwhile, Haggoz and Kevin are deeply involved in a much more serious game of their own. The king warned Haggoz that punishing his own mate and holding him prisoner would be nearly impossible, but Haggoz can't bear to be parted from him. Locked in a seemingly endless war between his love for the former marine and his duty to his king, Haggoz is struggling to survive.

Just when it seems that they’re hopelessly deadlocked, Mikos and Haggoz go on what should be a routine mission against an ARes training facility on a distant moon. When disaster strikes and word gets back to Ryan that Mikos and Haggoz are both in terrible danger, he embarks on a desperate mission to save them and bring them safely home. Ryan finds an unlikely ally in Kevin to help him save the men and discover that even though the course may be rocky, true love will always find its way.

Ok .. so I’m really loving this series for so far. Although Ryan and Miko’s story wrapped up quite nicely in book one, I was super curious about what would happen further in their lives and I can’t be more pleased that they get another novel to tell their story. 😊 And remember the side character, Kevin, from the first novel? Yup, he also got his own HEA in this book. 👏

So Ryan has been a bit restless these days. Don’t get me wrong .. he does love his husband but as a former colonel, he was used to living an active and colorful life. And currently, the life as the consort of the crown prince of Tygeria isn’t exactly what he had planned for his life before he met Mikos and he had too much time on his hands despite needing to look after their son. So our naughty Ryan has conspired together with ever-winning, always-getting-his-way, spoilt mother hen, Blake, to compete against their mates in the game area fighting gladiator games. And poor Mikos, 😂 even after giving a baby to Ryan hoping that will make his mate docile and obedient, 😁 my my, his consort is more stubborn and arrogant than ever and even more emotional than when they first met. 😂👏 Ryan claimed it’s because of pregnancy hormones but Mikos knew better but decided to relent and shut his mouth anyway. 😏

Meanwhile, the Dyson of the Tygeria and the mate of Kevin, General Haggoz is torn between love and hate for Kevin. 🤨 On one hand, he can’t live without Kevin and He can’t even fathom ever letting him go but on the other hand, he can’t deal with the fact that Kevin not only betray him but also tried to kill Ryan and somehow involved in the attempt to murder the royal family. And Kevin is fighting for his own inner emotional battles too. No matter how much he apologizes to Haggoz, he just can’t seem to forgive him and he’s worried that even if he revealed the real reason why he had to do what he did, Haggoz would even hate him more.

I really love the plot and twists in this story. It was very cleverly written and I can’t be happier there are four MCs instead of two in this novel. 👏 And my my, the sex is always sensationally hot, erotic and sexy. 😉 I just love those huge, macho, possessive and passionate Tygerian males. And the angst, Oooooh, a good portion of this novel was really angsty and emotional and although I know that they’d surely get their HEAs, I shamelessly cried a bit. 😭 What a sweet and thrilling emotional rollercoaster ride! 😌 and I really love how everything turned out in the end and that each of them got their very merry HEA. Such a delightful story to read. 😊

Favorite excerpts from the book: 💗💜💗

“Everyone you meet in this life will eventually try to hurt you, Kevin. You just have to find the one worth suffering for.”

“Don’t worry, baby, I’ll stay with you. And then in a thousand cycles or so, when you’ve been punished enough for your heathen ways, we can finally go to sleep together. I’d never leave you behind.”

Damn Ryan, I'm sorry for your loss, and with that I mean the loss of your bal*s and your masculinity. With each book my opnion of you is getting lower, you won the bet and you didn't even try to collect it. Where is your personality? The humans in this book are really a shame, all talk and no real action, the only thing they know how to do is throw things. I'm not a fan of any of the relationships in this series and I can save only few scenes of this book, and all the rest was a disappointment. I was thinking of rating this 3 stars, but after the epilogue and that shameful behaviour...

I don't wanna waste more time reviewing this book, I'm not rating this 2 stars only bcs there wasn't rape or cheat.

2.5/5 This honestly wasn’t bad at all, I just don’t feel like enough happened to justify its own book. I could easily see this being combined with the first and flowing nicely while maintaining a better length. I did however really enjoy the change in perspective, it was super interesting to learn more about Kevin!

Absolutely loved this book! First off, Mikos and Ryan have their own trials and tribulations to get through. Never, and I repeat never, spoon and cuddle with the rolls of a belly that have given birth! It upsets the birthing parent! I don't care who you are!
Ryan needs to feel better about himself so he devises a plan to play in the war games with a human team! Obviously Mikos is against anything that may harm his mate. He seems to have forgotten where his mate came from.
Now let me get to my new favorite (Shannon West has a way of giving me favorites!) Haggoz! I love him! He has undertaken keeping Kevin as his prisoner because he can't bear to be away from him.
The obvious love between the two break my heart. The position Kevin was in was a no win situation and both of them are torn apart.
When Mikos and Haggoz get took away on a mission and don't return, it is up to their mates to find them and bring them back. Even when one of them is compromised.
One of my favorites by far!

As much as I was looking forward to continuing Mikos and Ryan's story, I was especially interested in General Haggoz and former Staff Sergeant Kevin Neely, an Alliance Marine who got caught up in spying for ARes, betraying the Alliance and the Tygerian treaty. Of course, Kevin was tricked, manipulated, and blackmailed by his former commanding officer in the Alliance, into becoming a love slave and enticing General Haggoz for ARes. When Kevin confessed all to Haggoz about the plot to assassinate the prince and Kevin's role in trying to kill Ryan, Kevin knew ARes took revenge on his small son back home and murdered him. The king made Kevin a prisoner and no matter how much Haggoz and Kevin love each other, Kevin remains locked in a tower with only visits from Haggoz.

I can't believe how quickly I forgot how horrifically arrogant Mikos is. It's been six months since Ryan gave birth to Miklos and he's still struggling with some hormonal changes causing him to lash out and, occasionally, be illogical. It happens. When Mikos goes and talks to his bearer, Blake, about it, Blake's suggestion is that Ryan is probably feeling bored and unchallenged after being a colonel in the Alliance. Mikos' response is that Ryan just needs more babies to keep him busy. *rolls eyes* To say I laughed, long and hard, is an accurate statement.

“The course of true love never did run smooth.”
- William Shakespeare

General Haggoz finds himself in the impossible situation of having to imprison his own nobyo. As he struggles to come to terms with the wrong doings of Kevin, he also realizes that he will never stop loving Kevin. Kevin finds himself imprisoned in a cell in Haggoz’s house where the only thing that breaks the pall of his existence is Haggoz and the times he deems to visits him. But while Kevin may have reasons for his deeds, he has given up hope on ever having Haggoz forgive him.

On the other hand, Mikos and Ryan are just trying to get through everyday life. They bicker like an old married couple but are just as much in love as they were before.

But when Mikos and Haggoz disappear it is up to Kevin and Ryan to find them and bring them home.

This book is a good companion to its predecessor.

The story of this book follows two couples – Mikos and Ryan; and Haggoz and Kevin. The best part about following two couples was that since both these couples where in different places in their respective relationships, it made for an interesting story as we kind of got all the phases that a relationship goes through in one go.

Mikos and Ryan love each other more than ever but they also argue more than ever. Their story is basically about how navigating married life has been for them so far.

This time around we get more of the royal family. We get lots of interactions with Blake, who I have come to adore. His will is second to none. Also we get to see a whole lot more of Vannos, Anarr, Larz and Nicarr but I guess the best thing was that we got to see Blake interact with his children which is so sweet. I mean I loved the parental vibes he gives off and how well he knows all his kids and how much he loves them. Also we see more of Davos but I need even more on him to pass judgement. Also could we please get more interactions between Davos and Blake I still can’t get the time Blake threw a jug at him in the first book out of my head. In fact I can read a whole book about Davos and Blake. But there was also a very inconspicuous absence of Blake and Davos’ fourth child Darrek, I mean this time around when we got introduced to all their children, I started counting and I reached only 5 and then I went back to figure out who was missing. Turns out it was Darrek and there is nothing about him in this book, absolutely no mention whatsoever. Also more Mikol!

This time around we get a bit more on the shifting aspects of Tygerians. Well we actually get to see Hagggoz in his tiger form and personally I loved the scene. But I wish we could get more of tiger Mikos, now that I would love to see.

Kevin and Haggoz’s story line was something extremely beautiful. I mean here are two people who love each other a lot but find themselves on opposite sides of the law. Haggoz had a horrible childhood and Kevin is his one and only shot at happiness because Kevin is his happiness. But Haggoz also has a duty to his king to keep his nobyo, Kevin as a prisoner but try as he might to hate Kevin for his actions he realises that his love for Kevin is boundless. In fact during the entire story I was positive that any hurt Haggoz had ever inflicted on Kevin actually hurt him more and hurting Kevin was actually his way of hurting himself.

Kevin might have reasons for his wrong doings but he doesn’t think that Haggoz will understand. But loving Haggoz is something that has become synonymous with living life for Kevin.

These two tortured souls who want nothing but to be together must walk a difficult and treacherous path to be together. But since their hearts are already one it won’t take long for their minds to realize how foolish their forced separation is.

I loved the story and how it is written the POVs alternating between the two couples, on one side there was the playfulness of Ryan and Mikos and on the other was the heartache of Kevin and Haggoz and they balanced each other perfectly. The plot was the best because seeing the Ryan and Kevin work together to get back their mates was really well done. Also it was nice to see the humans work together to rescue their more powerful Tygerian mates.

My only irritation with the book was that the meeting scene between Haggoz and Kevin was repeated i.e. we got that same scene from Haggoz’s as well as Kevin’s perspective but reading it again was kind of a dredge. Also the party at the end of which Mikos gets shot in the first book was rehashed this time from Ryan’s POV, these repetitions got kind of boring. Actually as such it wasn’t the repetition of the scene that was so boring it was the fact that I was anticipating that I would have to read the events that I already knew about again that was trying.

Otherwise this book was a great follow up to its predecessor and I loved the epilogue, finally Mikos learns how to deal with his husband. I hope we can get more Mikos and Ryan.

Cover Art by E Connors. The cover is a little weird what with that huge scarf but it is actually a depiction of Kevin from a scene in the book but it makes no sense whatsoever if you haven’t read the book.

Enjoyment: 3.5 maybe?
Quality: 3, maybe?

Mikos is 22, Ryan is 30. Kevin is 24, Haggoz is thirty. I don’t quite get why they act like the 6 years between Haggoz and Kevin are more than the almost 9 years between Mikos and Ryan. Blake and Davos are like 42. Literally every time Blake’s age is mentions it’s followed by the equivalent of “but don’t worry! He looks WAY younger than 40!” Lol

Overall this book was not as fun as the first one, at least for me. It made it harder to ignore some of the quality issues with the book. I’d still like to try the next book to see if it gets better.

The good:

We have a main couple (Kevin and Haggoz who don’t want children! I mean, Kevin has a son with a woman named Elena who was a one night stand and also a friend. Sadly, his son’s name is Jeffrey. But Jeff was an accident and Kevin doesn’t want more kids. (And then this was also nerfed when Haggoz decided he could love Kevin and decided out of the blue he wanted babies…which is fine, but I’m baffled).

I like that Haggoz not only allowed but encouraged Kevin to learn to fight Tygerians who have slightly different bodies and combat. And then that Kevin taught the other humans.

I appreciate that the “soul mate” system isn’t perfect and also isn’t purely horrible. I’ve read some of both and neither are awesome for me.

Still glad that all the MCs are bonkers. Like truly bonkers. If one of them was normal I’d be so worried for them. Luckily I don’t have that issue here.

Lol, Ryan had no idea his name changed when he got married. I mean he should have at least guessed!

Team human (Ryan and Kevin) are the rescue team! Even though their rescue team gets co-opted the moment they rescue their partners.

The not so good:

It’s very cheesy in a lot of places (but I’m not sure it’s on purpose), and still haphazard-feeling. Sometimes it contradicts itself from one sentence to another. Sometimes it has repetitive exposition (like saying “Mikol, Tyan and Mikos’s baby” when we’ve known that since the start of the book. It also uses passing out as a scene transition too much again. It’s creepy sometimes like when Ryan and Blake get bad news and they’re injected with a sedative against their will by their family so they won’t be upset.

I’m not a fan of all the violence or attempted violence by the humans agains their Tygerian partners. I get the Tygerians are all bigger and stronger but it’s still not OK to hit your partner. None of them seem bothered or threatened but it’s still uncomfortable. Like Kevin deciding he has to “act like a marine” and so he punches Haggoz on the chin.

Please don’t say “crotch” during a sex scene. Not sexy.

So! Many! Exclamation! Points!

Still the casual misogyny (“acting like a woman” is bad, but “like a woman” means caring for someone or worrying for them). Why is this SO COMMON in all genres? The book says the Tygerian women run all the other infrastructure on the planet other than war, which is the only thing the men do. Yet the men are so casually dismissive of them. That doesn’t seem “equal” to me.

Sometimes too much tell and not enough show. I had to skim some of it because of the repetition again.

I wasn’t thrilled about focusing on two couples, especially when a lot of it from Kevin & Haggoz’s POVs was recapping from book 1. I had the dual problem of not being as interested in Kevin and Haggoz, and yet sometimes I could barely tell them apart from Ryan and Mikos.

The continued hubris by Ryan, and sometimes Blake, is a potential danger to Mikos...

...particularly as Ryan hasn't Blake's years of experience dealing with protocol and royalty, nor does he seem to recall his military training, self control, and discipline. I disliked Ryan's belligerence and petulance, which Mikos blamed on hormonal reactions; however, Ryan was a colonel with at least a decade of military experience in combat leadership, and ought to still have had his military training kick in despite the hormonal imbalance.

Then the posturing over the challenge was featured into a huge deal. Ryan and Mikos were newly mated as well as new parents. For an experienced military combat commander who probably faced making quick decisions, choices, and analysis for the best outcome, Ryan displayed poor tact, judgment, and zero respect for his mate's feelings, position, and culture when he insisted on immediate changes to rules or policies for humans. Realistically, Mikos wouldn't have been able to allow Ryan the extreme magnitude and waiving of Tygerian protocol for deliberately humiliating Mikos in the challenge. He at least ought to have kept it straightforward and fair without deceit. The maneuvering Ryan used against Mikos was not, in any shape or form, impersonal or honorable. Instead, Ryan preyed on Mikos' devotion to him as well as a Tygerian's inability to deliberately harm his nobyo to win -- he flat out cheated. Given Tygerian culture and their stance on honor and proper behavior expected toward any royal, he shouldn't have been allowed the win using that level of trickery. Although the Tygerian public get to see a different, more empathetic Mikos, that change in perception and knowledge could hurt the way the family is viewed by their people, other races/cultures, and their enemies.

I dislike cultural oppression, but I also abhor newcomers belittling a way of life, rules, establishment, protocol, and/or society, which is what Ryan did, to a degree. Even with the hormone injections interfering with his moods and attitude, Ryan's military training shouldn't have let him ever that far off course in his manners and professionalism. Realizing the drama was necessary for the plotline, Kevin behaving out of whack would've been more believable since he was younger with less exposure and training. I refuse to believe men possess the chemistry to be that bipolar once hormones are introduced to their system. I would find it difficult to believe that even a woman with Ryan's background and experience could demonstrate such extreme behaviors - the reactions, discipline, routines, would all become so ingrained and natural, they would kick in and prevent them from being rude, or to lose control to the extent Ryan did. That bothered me.

I occasionally read a series that's so fantastic I devour each installment and the Mate of the Tyger Prince is shaping up to be just that. I was wondering what would become of Kevin after the last book and boy did I find out. I felt sorry for him in book 1 and then felt bad because I loved Ryan and he didn't deserve the things that happened to him. Annnnd, then I felt sorry again for Kevin because he didn't deserve the things happening to him either. I was so torn! And so invested! Sorry for all the exclamation points lol. So I started this story feeling bad for Kevin which quickly evolved into feeling badly for Haggoz (Kevin's mate). The angst level is off the charts but somehow not overdone.

I'm really loving the Tygerians who fight hard and love harder. They definitely don't have the same set of morals and ethics as earthlings do but they are as honest as they are harsh.

This book included the MCs Ryan and Mikos from book 1 in a way that I wouldn't call cameo appearances because they played as important a roll in the story as Kevin and Haggoz. I was glad to see that their story continues.

I thoroughly enjoyed this story and am loving the series. I recommend it highly.

I dunno. So much of this is really great. But I fucking hate Miko. He's such an asshole. There's no HEA with him, it's just a "reluctantly accept that this abuse cycle is currently on a high". He's so toxic. And refuses to compromise. And even when he's forced to compromise, it's too little too late and the plot is off to the next thing that he refuses to budge on. It's exhausting.

Kevin and Haggoz are actually sweet. But unlike most romance books, the focus isn't on just that one couple. It's also written from a third person perspective which I don't mind at all, but some people find it weird.

I end the book wanting to read the next one, but I seriously consider DNF so much *while* I'm reading it. It's like it's not fun to experience, but I still want to know what happens with the plot cuz I enjoy the universe.

A lot of fluff

This is book 2 in the series I waited until now for a review. The first book didn't get going until halfway through.

This book spent the first half reviewing and retelling the story from the first book only from a different characters perspective.

The subject matter of this book. A rescue mission, didn't begin until nearly 3/4 of the way through. Far too many gratuitous sex scenes.

These first two books could have been combined into one, and there could still be plenty of sexy times.

Not sure if I will continue the series.

Too much domination for taste, to be much more equality between couples, I think it is as good as easier, very very anxious in the middle of the book for the Mikos fulfill their promise and not end is not happened. Kevin was treated with a lot of inequality as well.

I enjoyed this space shifter story.

This is the 2nd book in the tiger Prince series. Focusing mostly on Hazzog and Kevin, with Mykos and Ryan as a side story. I like this one, and was happy to see a bigger glimpse of the shifter aspect of the tygerian ppl.

Like two stories for the price of one. This books focuses on Haggoz and Kevin's relationship along with Mikos and Ryan. Kevin and Haggoz briefly appeared in book, Kevin was the one mixed up with Ryan's assassination plan and Haggoz is Mikos close friend and the right handman? (I guess you can say...or if you want to be more technical the General or Dyson) of Mikos.

The book starts off with Haggoz and his prisoner/love slave, Kevin. We get some background stuff on Haggoz and why Kevin betrayal cut deeply for him. As the story progresses we learn many things about Kevin and why he did what he did for ARes. Along with that we get to see how far Haggoz and Kevin's relationship have deteriorated. It was pretty heart wrenching. Kevin was extremely guilt ridden and it was saddening to see. But luckily he has Haggoz who tries to help him as much as he can. When he manages to get Ryan to meet with Kevin, things look a bit better for Kevin.

On Ryan and Mikos end we get to see more of their relationship, how they've settled back in to married life after the ordeal they suffered in book 1. Ryan is extremely hormonal and it is a bit of comical relief in terms of Mikos not knowing how to deal with the mood swings. Furthermore, Ryan is restless and so him and other nobyo decide to create their own team for the Exhibition Games, which causes some stirring among the Tygerian community.

When Mikos and Haggoz leaves on a mission and four weeks passes with no contact from their mates. Ryan, Blake and Kevin become worried when they get word about what happens, things start looking pretty bad. Ryan and Blake enlist Kevin's help and even throwing in a pardon if Kevin manages to help locate Mikos and Haggoz.

I really enjoyed the story although I felt like Kevin's story was cut a bit short in terms of what happened to Jeffrey. The bet between Mikos and Ryan, made their relationship feel a bit one sided. Mikos got what he wanted but I would have liked to see Ryan actually get his end of the bargain too since he did win even if it didn't seem honorable to Mikos. I really hope the next installment revisits both couples.

Darkside by Shannon West is the second book the Mate of the Tyger Prince series. They should be read in order the story is building off the previous book.
This one focuses on Haggor and Kevin, but we do see Ryan and Mikos. Again.
Haggor is the prison keeper but he cannot stop having sex with his in mate, Kevin after all Kevin is his mate. Kevin loves Haggor no matter what. When you find out what really happened with Kevin and why he is in prison you also find out things are not always as clear cut as they seem. Haggor will need Kevin and Ryan if he is to survive this book. I liked how danger has bonded them all and shown us the readers the true colors of the characters. I also like how the story is progressing along. There is a lot of story in this book which I love. There is also a lot of heat in this book, I can never say no to that combination. I cannot wait to find out what happens next! I love that all the characters are finally coming together and really forming bonds and have real strong personalities. This is one of my favorite series for both hot man love and amazing story telling. Keep bringing them on.

Excellent

I've loved all of these books, both in the love slaves series and in this spin off series. I felt so bad for Kevin in the last book and was excited to find out that he and Haggoz for their story in this one.

This book starts out shortly after Mate of the Tyger Prince ended with Kevin under permanent house arrest in Haggoz's care for betraying and attempting to assassinate Ryan. But, of course, the situation isn't as simple as anyone involved assumed.

As new information about ARes surfaces, Mikos and Haggoz leave their mates on Tygeria to investigate things, but end up stranded on a distant moon and avoiding capture by ARes.

The story was entertaining, well-written, and often hot.

I was really hoping this book would be a little bit better than the first one. Story wise it was, slightly. However, the rest of it was questionable. For a good 50% of the book we're getting 3 stories, Kevin before Haggoz, the present Kevin and Haggoz post the assassination attempt, and then Ryan and Mikos. I feel like Haggoz and Kevin's story should have been a novella or something. It didn't really need to go into book 2, but I understand why it did, it just didn't seem to flow well. Not to mention I wish that Mikos would have bottomed for Ryan I would have loved to see that. Overall the story was good, it just didn't wow me or anything.

3.75 Stars. I didn't enjoy it quite as much as Mate of the Tyger Prince but if you enjoyed the first book I certainly recommend it. I'll also pick up any more books written in this series.

My only negative comment (and it has nothing to do with the story) is who the hell picked out the cover? I think it would have to win some kind of award for "Cover that has nothing to do with the story".

Not as good as the first book, but gives us a bit of background on Kevin.. I was disappointed that they didn't give us a bit more about the HEA...and Kevin kept going on about a son he never had any active role in his life.. I would of like to seen them find the son and show the humans as a stronger assault team rather than the weak little shits they came across as. Not to bad though but needed a bit more action

I loved this book because it was combination of both couples Haggoz and Kevin who in the first book in this series turned out to be a trader and the original couple we loved Mikos the prince and Ryan. It was quite humorous and interesting to see both Kevin and Ryan work together in trying to save their mates and win the human fight games. Blake and King Davo were a hoot too!!!
