This is a political novel set in a domestic context. Twins are born in Mullabawn Castle, home of the Lavaars but one, a girl, is stolen at birth by Lalla Deane and reared in the poverty of a poor, landless family. Lies, love, hate and betrayal await the characters against the magnificent backdrop of County Mayo in the dying days of Anglo Irish rule.
I have very mixed feelings about this book. It had the basis of a great story but got a bit lost along the way. The opening chapter is gripping. Bella becomes the main character as the book moves along. At first I liked her a lot. She had a loving family and a home on the estate. They were dirt poor but they still had love and happiness in their lives. Then things change and Bella's character ebbed and flowed. She made a decision, one that I didn't really understand and by doing so it changed her character completely. Major things happened but they seem to only warrant a paragraph, came out of nowhere and then everyone carried on as normal. It was all too abrupt. The final chapter was a bit farcical. Also all the chapters are only one or two and a half pages long so it's a fast read. So overall I was a bit disappointed with it.
