Book number two in the League of Pensioners series, featuring elderly Martha Anderson and her friends – Brains, Rake, Christina and Anna-Greta. They’ve escaped the nursing home and are living the high life on their ill-gotten gains, but they long for “home.” So, they return to Sweden where they purchase a secluded property where no one will find them. But they discover that their nest egg has gone missing and now they need to plan another robbery so they can continue their mission of improving the lives of the elderly.

The first book was a hoot, and I rather enjoyed the outlandishness of it all. But this one…. Well, it took me over a month to read it because I kept getting bored and putting it aside. It seemed to me that the author was just trying too hard to make this a comical crime caper, but it came across as tedious.

I’m crossing the rest of the series off my tbr.

The Little Old Lady Who Struck Lucky Again is the second book in the League of Pensioners series by Swedish author Catharina Ingelman-Sundberg. After escaping to the Bahamas with their ill-gotten gains, Martha Andersson and her four old friends head to Las Vegas. Then, having made De Beers, Casino, Bank security and Police look like total idiots, they head back to Sweden, so the book’s cover is actually rather misleading. With the help of Christina’s adult children, they set themselves up in a grand house, only to discover a Tarot-reading siren and a gang of bikies are their neighbours.

These self-styled Robin Hoods manage to lose their stolen assets as easily as they acquire them, and their commentary on the government, financial institutions and legal firms becomes repetitive and borders on preaching. Their justification for committing these crimes (the terrible conditions of retirement homes, schools and art galleries) is also reiterated numerous times. The humour relies on sitcom or slapstick, and obviously loses something in translation. While the characters are portrayed as resourceful, their activities (bank robberies, museum theft and extortion) are too far-fetched to be even vaguely believable. The plot (commit theft, give away funds, lose some, rinse and repeat) is executed in a rather tedious and occasionally clumsy manner. This sequel is disappointing.
With thanks to TheReadingRoom and Pan Macmillan Australia for this copy to read and review.

So we last met the little old lady, also known as Martha Anderson, when she was breaking all the rules and forming the league of pensioners. That was a terrifically fun and hilarious read and luckily this one was the same.

This time all our friends are in Las Vegas – where they are soon caught up in a hugely hilarious amount of criminal activity.

This was such a great uplifting read – if you can imagine the Ocean Eleven gang all in their 70’s and 80’s planning all sorts of shenanigans, you’ve probably got this one down pat. Beautifully hilarious at times, with a really good heart to it, I loved Martha even more in this one than the last, her character really grew for me. I think possibly I enjoyed the first one a LITTLE more simply because it was such a new idea, rampaging pensioners refusing to sit in a corner and knit – but still, it is a rip rollicking adventure and I am definitely planning to become a master criminal when I hit 65. I mean why not?

One group of lively pensioners versus a criminal gang made for all sorts of laugh out loud moments, the great writing and storytelling of the first novel is very much still right there, there are some side stories and little bits and bobs that REALLY brightened my day at times and overall you won’t find much better if you are looking for a funny, heartwarming read. From someone who spends most of their reading time with serial killers and psychotic women, this was a breath of fresh air and a little bit of a wonderful reading holiday. So glad there is going to be a third book!

I'll admit--I was concerned at the start--the gang up to their old tricks in a Las Vegas casino--only because I really didn't want them to get nabbed and sent to US jail (I especially don't think Martha would do well there), but soon enough we are back to familiar ground. Social Justice Robbers, Swedish grandparent style. Much like the last book, they find they are great at stealing vast sums of money but not so wonderful at holding onto or dispersing the funds, when they are outraged to discover that their old nursing home is even worse than it was before.

They also tangle with a motorcycle gang, the police, crooked custom officials while carrying out their intricate schemes. Passages like "Strange how much somebody could reveal when they were talking to old people. It was as if they thought that the elderly had stopped thinking. For youths and politicians the elderly just didn't seem to count. Not at all" underscore the point of the book. Like if Miss Marple was crooked--the League of Pensioners (or..not sure what they decided the gang should be called at the end) use their frailness and age to outwit everyone around them.

Do I really need to hear step 1, step 2, step 3... step 12...step 37... step n... as n approaches infinity in the decision-making process of whether to have coffee, tea, cloudberry liqueur, some combination of these, or something different EVERY time this group has a snack? (and they snack OFTEN). NO!!! NO!!! I really have no need and no desire to hear this process every time. Especially since it is virtually the same process every time, and I then get to hear all of the steps on why it was a good or bad decision - often from more than one of the main characters, and then the whole thing again for whether they should have wafers, or cinnamon buns, or cake, or who really cares why am I being forced to read page after page of this tedium?!?

Then, I got to read the tedious, repetitive rants about social conditions in Sweden. Then, the tedious repetitive details about their plans and tedious, repetitive discussions on whether they can morally commit the crimes. Then, I got to wonder why anyone thinks the so-called plot twists are funny when they were fairly predictable and mostly just made me wonder how anyone who makes such stupid mistakes can pull off these crimes - OH! wait because the author just makes stuff up as she goes with no basis in the reality of how banks and museums, or police investigations, etc. work... I hate it when authors are too lazy to do their research and apparently think I am too stupid to notice.

And finally, really they are robbing a museum of its treasures to get money to support, among other things, the culture of their country - you know, by donating money to museums. How does that even make sense?!?

Sadly, while I found this book tedious to read, I might well be misguided enough to read the next one in the series. But then again, with my growing TBR list of good and potentially good books, probably not...

This one wasn't anywhere near as funny as the first one and it dragged a bit in the beginning, but it picked up once the motorcycle gang members moved in next door. The League of Pensioners always seem to get caught up in something! LOL I will continue on with the next one as I want to see what happens with them and what hijinks they get into.

Very funny. I feel like I live with this group of rowdy pensioners. It felt like a Carry On caper as nothing went quite according to plan but it all turned out right in the end. Viva the old gang.

If you enjoyed The Little Old Lady Who Broke All the Rules , then you'll most definitely enjoy this sequel.

I personally didn't like this sequel as much because it was too over-the-top with the League of Pensioners getting away with four or five different crazy criminal activities in the span of a couple of months. I did, however, enjoy the unpredictability of the plot - what will they plan next? How will they get away with it? Where will they hide their stash? What are they going to do about the biker gang that they have as neighbours?

My average rating for The League of Pensioners series: 3/5
Check out my reviews for the rest of the series:

Having loved the Little Old Lady Who Broke All the Rules, I was really looking forward to meeting The League of Pensioners again and see what they would get up to this time!

Although you could probably read this as a stand alone novel, if you have not read the The Little Old Lady Who Broke All the Rules, I still recommend you read that one first as that will put this one into context.

Just like the first book, The League of Pensioners get up to all sorts of crazy criminal activity and just like last time, it is all for a good cause.

Martha- the brains behind The League of Pensioners definitely stood out as my favourite character this time as she comes up with some fantastic criminal plans. I think I shall aspire to be like Martha when I'm older, but maybe wouldn't quite get away with the things that she does! It was fun reading as even though The League of Pensioners carry out some truly brilliant crimes, they do have a habit of getting themselves into a bit of a pickle and can be a bit forgetful! Once again though I loved that this book gets across that you should NEVER underestimate a pensioner!

Although I still enjoyed reading this, The Little Old Lady Who Broke All the Rules is still my favourite as it was all new and hadn't read anything like it before. However this book was still a really fun read, it made me laugh loads and there was one point where I did actually go "Awww" as something that I wanted to happen in the last book happened in this one.

More Swedish fiction but definitely not up to the standard, which has been driven pretty high by the likes of Stieg Larsson's Millenium series, Fredrik Backman's A Man Called Ove and even Jonas Jonasson and The Hundred-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out of the Window and Disappeared.

To be blunt, it was naff. It's carelessly written and needs some brutal editing, the same things being described over and over, ad nauseam. When I read the first 'League of Pensioners' yarn, I thought it had a certain charm to it, which led me to venture on. But this was just too much of the same, a prime example of an inadvisable sequel, succeeding only in forcing the perpetuation of a tired idea.

You also get repeatedly bludgeoned with a wishy washy sort of 'author's message' to do with the politics of Sweden, but it feels all wrong with the tone of the book, like trying to find meaning in an episode of Road Runner. Maybe it translated badly, but I wouldn't recommend it.

I confess I really struggled to finish this book. I had read its predecessor and found it mildly amusing but this one really did drag. It wasn't even funny. The "Let's give them more of the same" approach really didn't cut it.

So, what's it all about. Well, Martha and her friends, our geriatric Robin Hoods, have left the residential home and from the proceeds of their crimes have bought themselves a house in the country, where they all live together. Their small community is disturbed by the arrival of a gang of Hell's Angels, who buy another house in road, right next door as it happens, and then start taking liberties, assuming no one will object. Wrong!

Whilst trying to handle their unwelcome neighbours, our gang are once again plotting robberies, to make up for the money they keep losing, but mainly to give away to homes for the elderly, to make their lives more comfortable.

The problem I have with this book is that it has all the hallmarks of being written by a child. The plots, such as they are, are simplistic and full of holes. The "With one bound he was free" style does prove wearisome after a while.

Sadly, even if there are more in the series, I doubt I will be bothering to read them.

I didn’t actually finish this one; made it ~3/4 of the way through and decided there was no reason to keep reading since I was bored out of my mind. The characters were entertaining. However, it seemed implausible that they could pull of these complicated robberies, yet were so incompetent that they lost their stolen goods right away.

I read the first of this series many years ago and recall enjoying it. I am hating this one. It is contrived and clunky and juvenile. The premise is so ridiculous, which normally would be quirky and funny, but I am just finding it really annoying. I may or may not finish it.

"What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas. . . Unless you’re in the League of Pensioners!
“Martha Andersson and the League are at it again: Trading their senior home for the bright lights of the Strip, they’re ready to take Vegas for all it’s worth. A few lucky nights at the casino, some helium balloons, a set of dentures, and an inadvertent diamond robbery later, these five elderly friends have added a nice sum to their philanthropy budget and, satisfied, head home.”

This diabolically entertaining sequel to The Little Old Lady Who Broke All the Rules shows us that jumping into the game is never too late. Catharina Ingelman-Sundberg's follow-up to her earlier novel about a group of elderly Swedes who commit robberies in order to provide the needy with money is The Little Old Lady Who Struck Lucky Again. In Las Vegas, the group of five pensioners begins their last caper, where they loot a casino and gain access to some of the stolen diamonds. However, back in Sweden, it is not always as it should be. Their new neighbors, members of the infamous motorcycle gang, took a particular interest in the neighboring retirees and, more significantly, their Vegas winnings were stolen. Martha will not rest until the lives of pensioners across Sweden has changed.

This is a good book if you are looking for a light reading.

The Little Old Lady Who Struck Lucky Again! By Catharina Ingelman-Sundberg

THE BLURB

The little old lady is back! Martha Andersson and the League of Pensioners have left behind their dreary care home in Stockholm and headed for the bright lights of Las Vegas.

This is their opportunity for a new lease of life and they plan to make the most of it. But before long they are up to their old tricks and with ingenious tactics, a pair of false teeth and a wheelchair each, they plot to outwit the security system at one of the biggest casinos. However, they aren't the only ones planning on stealing bucket loads of cash and soon find themselves pitted against a gang of dangerous criminals.

Can the group of elderly friends work together to outsmart the younger robbers and get away with their biggest heist yet? Or will this job be a step too far for The League of Pensioners?

WHAT I SAY

WELL WHAT CAN I SAY I JUST LOVED THIS BOOK IT JUST A FUN READ IT MADE ME LAUGH SO MUCH I COULD SEE ALL THE DELIGHTFUL OLD PENSIONER DOING THE ROBBERIES

I just loved this book the written style so easy to read the plot just silly but so clever and what a lovely group of pensioners it just a very entertaining book

All the old pensioners have gone on a trip to Las Vegas they are so determined to make the most of their other wise dull life's. They do not want to be in care homes

One day they seem to get by chance a very nice surprise it so funny how the get the first bit of luck if you can call it that it made me laugh so much
They now decided to rob a casino you could to read to see just how the plan and do it
So very cleaver who would think a group of old people could rob a big casino

All the characters seem to be very feisty and very likeable
Martha the ring leader she was a great character i like her best she was so funny and where did she come up with her ideas. The pensioners call themselves The league of pensioners this did suit them

They did not want to be old they wanted the good life they did a few robberies to give back to the care homes they wanted the old people to have nice things and money to have all the things they need or wanted

The crimes they did took a lot of planning it was good to hear all about it
They use zimmer frames and walking sticks to help them get away with little things

The comedy in the book so good but i did think the plots of a few of the little jobs were a bit unbelievable but I could see them getting away with all
Just because they were old people

The biker gang side of the story was good it brought a fun part to the story i could see them being friends as they were just so different
The book was a bit far fetch but it just made me smile i really did love this book it just make you see old people can still have fun just a nice warm family of friends they stick together what fun they had

It a book i think you will love or hate i loved it so much
I just like all the security situation how they out wit them or did they ? just a fun story
This is the second book but you can read as a standalone book like i did

A BIT ABOUT BOOK /AUTHOR

1) Do you have any favourite novels?

I enjoy feel good novels. I also read Dickens, Oscar Wilde and many other English authors. I love English films too and the wonderful sense of humour that English people have!

2) What do you enjoy most about being an author?

Honestly, it gives me the freedom to plan my own time and do what I want, where I want.

3) The Little Old Lady Old Lady Who Broke All the Rules has sold to 17 countries so far and has been published under several different titles. Can you tell us what the other titles are and what they mean?

The original Swedish title is Kaffe med Rån which translated means ‘coffee and robbery’. Some countries have followed the Swedish title, i.e the Icelandic version Kaffi og Rán. The German title is Wir fangen gerade erst an (we’ve only started now), the Italian title is La banda degli insoliti ottantenni (You cannot trust the 80 year olds), the Norwegian titles is Svindel og multelikør (crookery and Cloudberry liquor), the Spanish title is La Bolsa o la vida (the money or your life) and the Dutch title is very much the same - Je geld of je leven.
I love the English title, The Little Old Lady Who Broke All the Rules because it says exactly what the book is all about. A group of elderly people who break all the rules - with Martha as their leader. And then I identify with the title personally as well!

Martha Anderson and her four friends continue with their "Robin Hood" project of taking from the wealthy and giving to those in need. Their first attempt ihappens in Vegas. And from there back to Sweden where they plan a bank robbery. It becomes more interesting when some bikers move in next door. When one of the pensioner men becomes attracted to the tarot card reader things get more interesting .

What a hoot! It was a little repetitious in places and detailed what they had to eat a bit too frequently, but all in all was an interesting romp. The robbery schemes were way-out wacky, and the ending--OMG! I was not expecting it.

Maybe it was just the right time for this kind of read, but I really enjoyed this book. Quite far-fetched, terribly unfeasible and extremely impossible, yet ..... With humour and fun-loving characters, the author spins a tale that just makes you smile.
