Godfrey Davis #1

Our Blue Orange

Rate this book
When inventor Godfrey Davis arrived at the ministry that Monday morning he had his first experience of the new phenomenon. There was something wrong with the aging android fleet that served the colony. Since when did they ever have names?

The president’s visit to his office later that morning gave credence to his earlier experience in the foyer, and somehow his long deceased father now seemed implicated. As Godfrey’s week spiralled out of control the future of the colony was now in jeopardy, and it was all because of him. He should never have left his latest piece of technology unattended.

If only he could find his father’s secret invention and turn back the clock then maybe he could redeem himself and save their society. But the past was about to collide with the present and the future now seemed very uncertain indeed.

Anthony Richard Merrydew was born in Dorking Surrey, England. His was educated at Andrew Cairns Secondary Modern school in Littlehampton, and several colleges in West Sussex.

He wrote his first manuscript ‘Malakoff’, during the early seventies, when he lived and worked in Besancon, France. For reasons best known to him, this remains to this day a work in progress.

His first published work, ‘Our Blue Orange’, was a light hearted Science Fiction story, which revolved around his fascination for automation, and in particular Artificial Intelligence. The novel took eight years to complete in his spare time, whilst working world-wide.

‘The Girl with the Porcelain Lips’, (second novel) was completed in Dunoon, Scotland, on a friends farm. Their support will always be remembered while recuperating from an accident in France.

Published on October 20th, 2023, and has been well received. It continues the story, however the theme has become more serious. As our own society changes with AI expanding it’s influence, so has the story.

The third novel in the Science Fiction series, ‘Inara’ was published on the 24th of June 2024. Whilst it still maintains the humour and consistency with the characters, it presents a daunting prospect for the future.

At the time of altering this bio, Book Four has started to develop. If progress continues unabated, then a publishing date in the spring of 2025 maybe achievable. There is no working title at present.

Anthony has also published a compilation of his poetry, ‘From the Pen of an Aquarian’ in 2023. An audio version of his book is available from Audible.com.

Anthony currently lives alone, and travels in his motor home named ‘Vera2’, full time, promoting his writing, poetry, and AI Artwork on social media platforms.

Author A R Merrydew writes what I found to be a fascinating and original story in Our Blue Orange. Godfrey is our main protagonist, and a loveable one too. His life is about to spin out of control as the story unfolds, as his past, present and future are going to implode unless he finds his fathers invention to turn back time. Time travel as a plot isn’t something particularly original, but the handling of the concept in this witty book I found very alluring. With its strange characters and artificial intelligence Our Blue Orange had me hooked from chapter one.

There is a well thought out concept within the pages, and a pretty funny storyline to go with it. The characters are engaging and very likable. Overall Our Blue Orange is pretty fast-paced and I enjoyed it start to finish. I’d say it’s definitely worth the read, and I wouldn't put any specific age group to it as I think its great for teens and adults.

A terrific, witty sci-fi novel

British author Anthony Merrydew has served as an electrical engineer, owning an electrical consultancy for such clients as Google, Facebook, and Emerson, and now makes his literary debut with OUR BLUE ORANGE, a novel that surveys a strange region of androids in a manner that seems completely reasonable and possible. Introducing the story is computer programmer Nigel Prentagast, ‘Nigel alone knew the reason why he was incapable of sleeping at night, and he wasn’t about to discuss it with his mother or anyone else for that matter. The burden that he carried was making him ill, and that particular Monday morning, as he sat staring at his ageing monitor with sunken bloodshot eyes, he knew that numerically it was simply a question of time before someone else learned of his discovery…In the half-light of a room on basement level thirteen, deep beneath the ministry, the chromium-plated fingers of a metallic hand flexed themselves with human dexterity. With engineering precision, the motorized thumb and forefinger disconnected a solitary lead from a nearby data port and let it fall to the ground.’

Stepping into the dark (yet very witty) story - ‘When inventor Godfrey Davis arrived at the ministry that Monday morning he had his first experience of the new phenomenon. There was something wrong with the aging android fleet that served the colony. Since when did they ever have names? The president’s visit to his office later that morning gave credence to his earlier experience in the foyer, and somehow his long deceased father now seemed implicated. As Godfrey’s week spiraled out of control the future of the colony was now in jeopardy, and it was all because of him. He should never have left his latest piece of technology unattended. If only he could find his father’s secret invention and turn back the clock then maybe he could redeem himself and save their society. But the past was about to collide with the present and the future now seemed very uncertain indeed.’

Science fiction delivered with aplomb, Merrydew proves a welcome new presence, and his mature writing style creates the hope that this book will be followed by further editions - and perhaps cinematic adaptation! Highly recommended

Strange

The most endearing thing is the hokey pokey writing, I genuinely enjoyed it. Like reading a novel about the Jetsons, where technology just happens when doofus characters push buttons. Every character is a loveable goof who somehow also single handedly on accident created an A.I. singularity. Then, at the end, the villain monologues for a chapter to explain how they are all doofuses and why everything is happening to them, thus tying up all the plot questions.

These reviews are fake or paid. Is this book written for children? The writing is childish, the language rudimentary, the story is all over the place. Several threads left without proper ending, characters are one dimensional, no growth or progress. For a “Ministry Inventor” Godfrey is a gigantic doofus. What a dreadful book. One star is generous.

Wow… I didn’t think I could possibly roll my eyes so much while reading a book. So many failed attempts at cheesy humor. Often detracting from serious moments. Ridiculous premises. And an ending so heavy handed with moral superiority that it made a ridiculous book insufferable.

I can see why many people like this book. It's quirky and has a particular sense of humor that is decidedly british. It just didn't land for me, however. The plot seemed a bit...either forced or farcical - maybe both. I got the sense that the author was heavily inspired by Douglas Adams, which is another indication that this book isn't for me, since I didn't like Adams' work, either.

Anyway, not my cup of tea, but I can see why it would be for others.

Wow. That was... awful. I THINK the author was going for a Douglas Adams vibe but honestly it was just bad. I'm shocked at the good reviews here on GoodReads. I thought I was possibly reading a different book than the other reviewers? The plot was weak, the characters predictable and the dialogue child-like. I simply can't fathom how on earth this book has 4+ stars!?

Did not finish. Got a quarter of the way through and couldn't take any more. I really don't understand how this book is so highly rated. To me, the "action" reads like a bugs bunny cartoon, it doesn't flow and is full of inexplicable gags that come out of nowhere. The characters are one dimensional, it's hard to relate to any of them. Their cartoonish motivations and dialogue that reads like it's from a movie from the 60's make the whole thing feel like the Jetsons, then something written in 2015.

While I initially liked the first few chapters/starting setup, it failed to capture my attention. Not enough world building, it seems empty, like reading a theater script. Also somehow fails to make me believe in the world it presents, it's characters attitudes and motivations.

After pressing through this I have to agree with the reviews that are baffled by the biased high ratings. The best comment I can make is that it’s rambling. Some bits were ridiculous enough to entertain in small ways.

2/5 is generous. Honestly, this was really hard to finish because of how badly written it was. Between cheesy writing, strange scenarios, and bad editing, this was a difficult novel to read.

It's a good story, light on the sci-fi, heavy on the pithy humor. Very British. Not my cup o' tea.

Did not finish, at the time of this review. I'm hate reading at this point. Absolutely horrendous.

As others have said, the author might have been trying for a Douglas Adams-like tone, but falls far short. Some of the higher reviews here describe the characters as "goofy" or "lovable," I find them useless and needy. Arthur Dent is lost, scared, and angry; weird things keep happening to him and he's just trying to get home. I care about what happens to Arthur Dent, and I relate to the way he reacts. Godfrey is... a loser who is riding on his father's coat-tails into retirement. He can't accomplish anything, and doesn't try; he sits on a couch and catches a cough, takes a nap, drinks cough syrup until he passes out drunk, then vomits all over himself at work and doesn't even consider going home to change. Get bent, Godfrey.

The perspective of the narrator changes throughout the story. Different chapters from different perspectives I can deal with, but nearly every chapter is from a new character's perspective; sometimes the perspective changes within the chapter, from paragraph to paragraph. Stahp, please.

It feels like it was written as if it were a 1950's vision of the future. Phone in the hallway. Fathers command their adult children, as if they own them: "You need to take a wife [...] that pretty little thing you were with in college [...] She's the right stock." "The women curtsied." Android elevator operators. Android doormen. Yes, door-MEN, the androids are all boys. Why are all the androids boys...? Eh, never mind.

The women exist in order to mother the men. That one programmer who... "disappeared"? Lived with his mother, who fed him and cleaned the house. Godfrey's wife? Also his mother: hey look at her, she makes his breakfast, lunch, and dinner, folds his laundry, treats his sore throat, and plays counselor when he needs someone to talk to. BTW, HER mother lives with them as well, and has nothing better to do than be "nosey" and "tittering." The office cleaning lady? She makes Godfrey some tea and fusses over him, because he went through the same "trauma" that she herself experienced, and then she tells him that he needs to go home early. Poor Godfrey. Burt misses his wife's cooking. She left him because "eventually it became to much". What's "it"? Doesn't matter, because we're supposed to feel sorry for Burt because he doesn't know how to shop for groceries.

Ick.

Well, I gave it a two because some bits are so silly they actually made me laugh but seriously, don't waste your time and money.
This book is very poorly written. The tone is all over the place, from dark and grim to outright slapstick comedic, the characters are caricatures at best, none of the places feel even remotely real, the prose is pedestrian, and the plot is full of so many holes it resembles swiss cheese.
The whole thing feels like somebody took inspiration from a few real writers and tried to cram them into this thing.
As I said, it's so poorly written it's actually hilarious here and there, but that's not much is it? It's clearly a first effort, and I'd recommend the writer not to bother with writing anything else as fiction is clearly not something he has any talent for.

And don't believe the positive reviews.... Nothing but a bunch of shills and, I'd imagine, friends of the author. It's just an awful waste of paper and ink of a novel.
LIke another poster said, the plot is summarized by a bunch of doofuses running around doing ridiculous doofus'like things until the doofus bad guy enlightens us all.
Avoid it like the plague

Author A.R. Merrydew does a great job of setting up an appealing cast of characters in Our Blue Orange, most especially Godfrey (our protagonist). There is plenty of drama ,weird and plucky androids and lots of action to be had in this fascinating sci-fi novel.

Inventor Godfrey Davis has put the whole colony in jeopardy by leaving his new invention un-attended and the only way to save civilisation and also redeem himself in the process is to find his late fathers secret invention and turn back time, however the past was about to catch up and throw chaos in the works!

These strange and weird characters entertained, each have their own personality traits and I really loved them. The plot line gripped me from early on, and the humor had me smiling at some of the plucky dialogue and events that played out. If you have even a passing interest in sci-fi, as this is a lot more than a sci-fi novel, and love to be entertained and have a giggle whilst reading, then I suggest you give Our Blue Orange a read.

A charming book that manages to capture a futuristic, yet quintessentially 50s British, world. An alien world that isn't very alien, robots that make you wonder whether we'd be more productive without them, and characters that you can emphasize with whilst groaning at their behaviors and decisions.

The story takes a number of turns and roundabouts, setting up the later books in the series well with mysteries to unravel, and contains its own little cluster of mystery/reveals that make it thoroughly satisfying.

People may find this book challenging simply because it's so stereotypically British, with a lot of social morays and affectations that may be alien to those not raised in, or familiar with, British culture and humour.

I feel it's fun, funny and engaging either way and hope others find the same.

Our Blue Orange by A.R. Merrydew
Past, present and future and what happens when they collide.
Really like AI parts of this story and how the coders are the ones to be saved, at all costs.
They take on a realm of their own by having names and getting teeth painted blue. It's a fad and hilarious at times to me.
Like when they take a stand and do things their way.
Rebellious at times but they don't want to take over the world.
Look at what could happen to our world as we know it if things get out of hand with AI.
Love following the mystery and when they look for certain device and it was right in front of them the whole time, great hiding place!
Received this review copy from the publisher and this is my honest opinion.

The author's unique blend of talent and humor shines in Our Blue Orange, a captivating story that hooks the reader from the very first page. The narrative is one-of-a-kind, filled with warmth, touches of humor, and confusing moments that challenge the reader's perception of reality. The book features a bunch of quirky characters, including malfunctioning androids, fuzzy sand critters with the same thoughts, and pacifist A.I. weapons that prefer delivering weather reports. It's a story that transcends age groups and stays in the reader's mind long after the last page. With the potential for a fantastic screen adaptation, this book is highly recommended.

Interesting characters, AI gone wrong, and time travel are what you’ll find in the pages of this book. Merrydew does an excellent job of bringing the setting to life with evocative descriptions, and really draws the reader into his unique world. Godfrey was a great MC - he’s accidentally put himself in quite the position, and watching him try and find a way out (time travel being his intended method) made for a fascinating story. The other characters were all unique in their own ways, and made up quite the cast. If you’re looking for a new twist on some fairly standard sci-fi tropes, then you’re going to enjoy this story.

This is so funny. When I got recommended this book on Goodreads the ratio of comments to reviews felt really weird. When I checked 5 star ratings of random people who rated 5 stars on 16th of July, they were all given 9-10 hours ago, like someone logged onto some fake accounts to like the book. When I looked further into the past, they have almost no Goodreads friends (1-2-3), nothing on currently reading and nothing on to read. No activity in 2022. 0 reviews.

I'm not blaming the author, maybe this is a family member or friend trying to support, but seriously this is wrong.

I don't feel bad about giving 1 star to balance out the fake ratings.

I very seldom feel the need to leave a written review. Rating books by stars is mainly my way of keeping track of the books I've read. I'm a voracious reader and many times over the years I begin a book only to realize... I've read this already.

This book has actually made me laugh out loud several times and that is a rarity. I'm not really definite on how to categorize what type of book it is. I'll go with Syfy comedy. About half way through I realized maybe the reason I was enjoying it so much was that the style was reminiscent of the late great Sir Terry Pratchett. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and look forward to future ones from this author.

I was not enamored with this book. It was some sort of amalgam of sci fi concepts without much that felt original or interesting. The story seems to rest on the quirkiness of the characters and the inane ramblings of talking weapons. I did get through the whole thing and found parts entertaining. The way the story was written linearly was fun, and the author was able to make these characters come to life (even if I found them rather forgettable). I don't think I would generally recommend this book unless the recommendee had a fondness for Hitchers Guide to the Galaxy which exudes a similar playfulness with the sci fi genre.

Entertaining to an extent, but I easily lost track of some of the characters, and maybe there's some deeper meaning over my head, but I just didn't get it. I think the book tried to make some bold points about the human race being selfish and there being a cycle of our own destruction, maybe, but maybe not. I really didn't get the end. This was an okay sci-fi book and then it just got kind of weird, and meandering, like if it had stayed on course it would've been a fine book, but then some extra sci-fi time travel stuff was also thrown in and it tried to make a point and I dunno maybe I just didn't get it. Meh.
