His novel La délicatesse is a bestseller in France. A film based on the book was released in December 2011, with Audrey Tautou as the main character. His novels have appeared in over forty languages, and in 2014 he was awarded the Prix Renaudot for his novel Charlotte.
Growing up in a home with few books and often absent parents, David Foenkinos read and wrote little during his childhood. At 16, he required emergency surgery as a result of a rare pleural infection and spent several months recuperating in hospital, where he began to devour books, learning to paint and play the guitar. From this experience, he says, he kept a drive for life, a force that he wanted to convey through his books.
He studied literature at the Sorbonne and music in a jazz school, eventually becoming a guitar teacher. In the evenings, he was a waiter in a restaurant. After unsuccessfully trying to set up a music group, he turned his hand to writing.
After a handful of failed manuscripts, he found his style, and his first novel Inversion de l'idiotie: de l'influence de deux Polonais (“Inversion of idiocy: influenced by two Poles”), though refused by many other publishers, was published by Gallimard in 2002; the book earned him the François-Mauriac literary prize, awarded by the Académie Française.

A comics adaptation by Cobeyran and illustrator Horne of David Foenkinos's book about Lennon, conceived as a series of therapy sessions. The title says it focuses on the New York years, beginning in 1975 when he dumped Cynthia, stopped being a Beatle, moved in with Yoko Ono, started being the Dad for Sean he had never been for Julian, but the book basically is listed as New York because the interviews took place during this time, but the text covers some aspects of his entire life.
If you do not know the Lennon story, this would be a sketchy place to begin, but since I assume most people know at least some things about him, this is interesting, well done. It doesn't attempt to romanticize him in the least; the "Imagine" artist was from time to time violent, he was an addict, an ego-maniac, and as he says, "his fame kept him from becoming a full adult." Eh. He was abandoned by his father, sure, and it crushed him, but no excuses, though, he was terrible to some people, including Yoko and fellow band members. He saw himself as a genius, as Jesus, and thought of the Beatles for a long time as "his" band, with him as leader.
Sometimes as I read this I think this is just the typical rock story of fame and dames and blame game and insane and train (wreck), and it really is, but I grew up reading everything I could about these guys, so this was like revisiting things I knew through a selection of Lennon's own words, cartooned. Would have liked more focus on the music, since that is what separated him from the typical rock star story of excess, but I listened to some songs as I read. You will need to find other ways to fill in the gaps (what happened with Paul, how did his friendship with George evolve, and so on), but the artwork here is great, with a documentary feel. 3.5, up to 4 for the art. Essential for Beatles and comics fans.

Beautifully drawn graphic novel about the whole life of John Lennon, not only the New York years as the title weirdly misleads you to think. I read it at Foyle’s in London while enjoying their 5th floor bar.
Problem: many panels were repeated, either on the same page, or on separate pages. Seemed too much like a cheap trick. Hence, no five stars.
P.s. the universe-shattering moment when John and Paul met is shown as John being the great director and Paul just going along with it. John says “I could create a band that would have international fame”. Whatever happened, the only thing that is 100% SURE is that John immediately realized he was looking at a fucking genius. This is not properly described in the book’s narrative, given the Lennon first-person perspective. Also, no Epstein, no Beatles - this is something else that goes too often unsaid.

En esta novela gráfica Foenkinos nos narra la vida de Lennon desde su infancia a través de sesiones con su psicóloga. Una historia que me ha sorprendido porque no conocía nada en absoluto, por mi edad, lo que recordaba de pequeña era cuando estaba con Joko y cuando lo asesinaron. La vida de Lennon y los Beatles no se puede separar hasta que aparece Joko y es que Lennon tuvo una infancia muy solitaria y falta de afectos. Os recomiendo esta novela si queréis conocer con gruesas pinceladas, aunque mostrándolo todo sin tapujos, como fue la vida de Lennon.

Beatlemaniacs will find this Lennon biography told in the first person really interesting, although occasional errors (e.g.: a discussion about Paul's first solo album shows the cover of Wings Wild Life) are distracting.

Me ha gustado, pero no tanto como esperaba. Me fascina la figura de John Lennon y también la forma de escribir de Foenkinos, así que quizá mi expectativa estaba demasiado alta. Ha sido entretenido y he aprendido algunas cosas nuevas sobre la vida de Lennon, pero no me ha fascinado como "Charlotte" o "Número dos".

In 'Lennon' vertelt John Lennon een fictieve psychotherapeut in 18 sessies over zijn bewogen leven. Hij geeft openheid over zijn getroebleerde jeugd, the rise & fall van The Beatles, de break-up, de rol van Yoko Ono, zijn affaire met haar personal assistant May Pang en over de relatie met zijn twee zoons. David Foenkinos, zelf groot Beatle-fan, heeft jarenlang onderzoek gedaan naar het leven van John Lennon in voorbereiding van deze roman.
Persoonlijk was ik wat teleurgesteld over de uitwerking. Ik heb eerder de biografie van The Beatles door Bob Spitz gelezen en de informatie die daar genoemd werd komt hier bijna woordelijk weer terug. Dus voor mij waren er geen grootse onthullingen of aanvullingen op de informatie die ik al wist. Ook de fictieve invulling van Foenkinos en het format waarin hij dit presenteert - de gesprekken met de psychotherapeut - hadden voor mij weinig toegevoegde waarde. Zo zegt Lennon op een bepaald punt in het boek bijvoorbeeld letterlijk dat hij het waarschijnlijk door de onzekerheid en onvoorspelbaarheid in zijn jeugd zo moeilijk vond om zich op latere leeftijd te binden en daarom een muur optrekt. Waarvan ik dan denk, show, don't tell, en dit is iets wat iemand met weinig (psychologische) kennis ook wel in kan vullen.🙄🤷♀️ Ik denk dat ik het verhaal sterker had gevonden als Foenkinos slechts één stukje uit zijn leven gepakt had en dat had gefictionaliseerd.
Als korte samenvatting van het leven van John Lennon is het een prima boek waarmee ik me vermaakt heb, maar de verwachtingen over 'grootse onthullingen van de laatste 5 jaar van zijn leven' en een meerwaarde van het format van psychotherapeutische gesprekken werden voor mij helaas niet ingelost. Toch denk ik dat het een fijn en laagdrempelig boek kan zijn als je meer wilt weten over zijn leven en geen zin hebt om in een dikke biografie te duiken. 🙂

C'était correct. Je n'ai pas trippé sur les illustrations, elles étaient redondantes (les mêmes revenaient plusieurs fois). J'ai aussi repère quelques erreurs qui m'ont un peu gossé. L'histoire quant à elle est intéressante, on en apprend plus sur John Lennon et la montée (et la descente) des Beatles, mais je referme la BD en n'ayant pas nécessairement une belle image de lui!

I like graphic biographies for the low entry fee to learn about someone. I finished this book in 2 sittings and I'm sure many could read it all in one go. I didn't know much about John Lennon. I know a little more now.

Hace tiempo que planeaba leer este libro, especialmente porque la música de los Beatles siempre me ha gustado y me ha acompañado a lo largo de mi vida. Recuerdo la primera canción que escuché de ellos en la radio “Love me do” para pasar a tomar el CD de mis padres donde venían los éxitos de los Beatles, donde hasta ahora mis favoritos son “A Hard Day’s Night”, “Eleanor Rigby”, “In my life” y “The night before”, así como puedo decir que mi álbum favorito de ellos es “Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band”. Algo tienen esos cuatro chicos de Liverpool que agradan, especialmente en la época donde tenían sus famosos cortes y usaban trajes negros. Creo que ese es el perfecto comienzo para cualquiera que comience a conocerlos.
Por eso mismo el libro “Lennon” de David Foenkinos (autor que gratamente ya conocía por su libro La Delicadeza, que me divirtió mucho), no es para los que no conocen del todo a este grupo que ha marcado toda una época y lo que se conocía por cultura popular, “Lennon” no es la típica biografía de John Lennon, el más complejo de todo el cuarteto. Aquí Foenkinos nos trae un John que por primera vez en su vida puede poner en orden sus ideas, todo lo que ha sido su vida, su nacimiento, la locura que arrastraban sus padres y que lamentablemente le afectó mucho más de lo que podemos ver a simple vista, el lado b de su existencia. Durante varias sesiones con un psicólogo al que nunca le vemos la cara, John comienza a explayar los comienzos de su vida, donde poco a poco aparecen las figuras más importantes de su vida y lo que significan para él, como su madre Julia, su tía Mimi, Paul, George, Ringo, Stu Sutcliffe-a quién me alegró que le dedicaran algunas líneas, porque de todos los Beatles, él es mi favorito, su historia con Astrid Kirchherr y su triste final por un derrame cerebral a la edad de 21 años cuando recién comenzaba a vivir su vida como artista-y la figura de Yoko Ono, quien es representada, al menos en el libro, como la que salvó a John se destruirse como le ha pasado a muchas celebridades e iconos. La historia siempre ha dejado a Yoko como la mala, la que separó finalmente a la banda, la que evitó que John construyera una relación sólida con su hijo Julián y la que hasta el día de hoy maneja todos los bienes de su fallecido esposo. Tal vez porque es fácil odiar a alguien, pero como todo en la vida, hay variadas perspectivas y aunque personalmente no siento nada por Yoko, es interesante leer a un John Lennon no tan perfecto como lo conocemos, sino alguien que es capaz de admitir que no era feliz en su primer matrimonio ni que se sentía listo para ser padre y que lamentablemente encontró el sentido de las cosas mucho más adelante, ¿a quién no le ha ocurrido también?
Dicen que en este mundo eres fan de los Beatles o de los Rolling Stones, pero también se puede ser un poco de ambos. Este es uno de los primeros mitos que se van aclarando y que por ello se debe leer este libro.

There are a few places that are inaccurate or somewhat misleading, but on the whole this fits with the reliable history of Lennon's life. How do I know? I've read so many biographies about him that I am finally able to separate what seems likely and what doesn't. Excellent art work and an interesting premise (John telling the story of his life to a therapist)-- good book overall

Don't let the title fool you, this book takes us through the life of John Lennon in it's entirety. The setup of the "The New York Years" is that John Lennon is sitting in a psychiatrist's chair going through his entire life. It's almost a verbal autobiography from that perspective. He takes us through the early days of his childhood, to the Beatles years, to the years with Yoko. Even the sad and tragic end. The highs and lows of his life are explored, with the highs being almost magical, and the lows giving that quote there a solidified confirmation.
I think David Foenkinos tactic of having Lennon himself be the narrator was a really smart move. It kept me engaged and attentive. I even did that thing where you read it in what you think a characters voice should sound like in your head, except this time you know exactly how it would sound. Of course, being a fictional work of art, there are times where the book takes a liberty or two regarding what Lennon is saying about a moment, or how he actually reacted. But the way Foenkinos keeps the character well in line with what we know about Lennon and how he was - makes the book feel like he is really talking to us and taking us through his life.
The art in this book is amazing. Horne does illustrations that are black and white and very life like. It enhanced the scenes as they gave us a (supposed) look at situations that are being written about in the book. Some are directly from old photographs of the Beatles, and the mix of reality and imagination makes the book come to life.
This is an great and expedient view on John Lennon's entire life. It is the bullet points of a biography. I did think the ending was abrupt but again, so was Lennon's ending, so it really does seem appropriate thinking on it now.
If you want to read a quick biography on Lennon's life in a fun and stylized way, this one is for you.

I'm 18, I live in the middle east -Egypt- in the year 2019. I'm not a fan of the Beatles as I have never heard of them until recently, and I still do not think of them as one of my favorites. I always thought of them as a group of English good boys and it kind of shaped how I thought of English teens in the 60's-80's. Boy how I was wrong.
I learnt the hard way not to look musicians up because it's almost always true that while being very creative and poetic they also contain all the evils of the world. Drugs, racism, fraud, cheating, abuse, rape.. whatever your mind can conjure, a musician did it.
I wasn't remotely ready to discover I was wrong, but no one cares about that. The graphic novel showed me what the Beatles were made of, what John was made of, and it's another disappointment.
It's not that I expected him to be an actual model Englishman like those I read about, one who thinks of revolution and world peace like any self-respecting person in the 60's. I do know that I was a little too dreamy to look for the 60's in a band, even if it was the Beatles.
I was reading and kept thinking: "Why is he even doing that? ". John was so deep in self-destruction and I think he didn't even question his most awful urges. I've just watched Imagine on Youtube and looked at his face while was singing, he looked so good and and care-free, I couldn't look in his eyes and see a cheating drug addict or a bad friend or a murdered man, he was so peaceful, so happy.
I may know music, but I'll never know musicians.

Eu gosto muito de ler quadrinhos sobre os Beatles. Claro, isso é porque eu gosto muito da banda e cresci com meus pais e tios ouvindo as músicas deles. Então, eles fazem parte da minha vida e, por isso é legal saber mais sobre a vida deles. Existem muitos quadrinhos que tratam dos Beatles em quadrinhos, tendo inclusive um livro teórico que analisa todas essas encarnações. Neste quadrinho de origem francesa, intitulado "Lennon", acompanhamos sessões de terapia hipotéticas do líder dos Beatles, John Lennon, a partir de quando ele se mudou para Nova York até o final do seus dias, quando foi covardemente assassinado no prédio onde morava. Temos, então, um passeio analítico-psicológico através da vida de Lennon, que tenta explicar seu "problema" com as mulheres e seu complexo de Messias, quando chegou a se comparar com Jesus Cristo. Os desenhos de Corbeyran com as aquarelas monocromáticas de Horne para arrematar dão uma dimensão incrível para os desenhos do álbum, deixando ele mais palatável e também lançando por vezes recursos mais caricatos para representar passagem da existência dos Beatles. Um belo quadrinho para fãs e não fãs de Beatles.

Koos het omdat het verhaal van Lennon in therapiesessie me wel aansprak. Hier wordt eigenlijl niks mee gedaan buiten de eerste zinnen van elk hoofdstuk. Wat dan overblijft is een pseudoautobiografie die wel vlot leest, maar allesbehalve volledig is. Es una biografía novelada sobre la vida de Lennon narrada en primera persona, en un escenario que parece casi una receta para el desastre: el ex-beatle está saliendo de ese periodo de encierro como padre de tiempo completo y se dedica a contarle a su terapeuta los puntos claves de su vida, ante el miedo de volver al grabar un disco, sì, el Double Fantasy.
La cuestión es que Foenkinos de algún modo se la arregla para darle un sentido auténtico, cálido y lleno de matices a la voz del ficticio Lennon, logrando un personaje entrañable lleno de conflictos, miedos y un montón de odio autodestructivo. Logrando algunas frases buenísimas en el trayecto:
"Para no arruinar nuestras vidas deberíamos vivirlas al revés"
"La muerte a balazos es la crucifixión moderna"
"El dolor nunca se toma vacaciones"
"Ahora pienso que el amor experimentado es proporcional al que no se recibe"
"La primera boca en abrirse fue la de mi padre. Intentó, con esa energía tan bella como patética de la desesperación..."
"Pasamos una década mezclándonos, sin intervenir jamás uno en el otro. Creo que nuestro éxito vino de ahí: de esa extraña alquimia entre la autonomía y la unión"
"Yo derroté al porno..."
Este libro se dejó leer sin parar en un par de días, poco tiene que ofrecer para quien haya leído una biografía más en forma, pero como ejercicio lúdico y melómano es bastante interesante y ameno. Va a mi top de este baratito subgénero.

Quien espere conocer detalles inéditos de la vida de Lennon posiblemente terminará desilusionado. Acá no hay sorpresas (al menos para los fans acérrimos), pero la gracia es que aproxima al hombre detrás del mito. Foenkinos, quien no hace ningún esfuerzo por disimular su fanatismo por el artista, expone crudamente el lado menos feliz del ex Beatle. La narración es fluida, y pese a la brevedad, abarca los aspectos más importantes de la vida de John. No he leído otras obras del autor, por lo que no sé si lo que no me terminó de convencer se debe a su pluma o son mis discrepancias con Lennon (o con la visión que el libro entrega de él).

El Beatle que menos me ha gustado ha sido siempre John Lennon. Si, era un genio con la música, pero como persona siempre me ha dado la impresión de que dejaba mucho que desear. Y aún con todo eso, he de reconocer, que esta biografía contada por el mismo, a través de la imaginación del autor, me ha encantado.
Más allá de que David Foenkinos escriba magníficamente bien, la novela es totalmente neutral. Lennon nos cuenta sus mejores momentos, pero también su descenso a los infiernos. No se guarda nada. Entre sus páginas, aparecen multitud de pequeñas anécdotas tanto de él, como de los Beatles o de la gente que les rodeaba. Algunas son de sobra conocidas, otras me han sorprendido, y con muchas simplemente me he reído.
Me preguntaba como acabaría un libro, del cual ya conozco el final. Y he de confesar que me ha emocionado, como fan de los Beatles y como persona. Es triste, pero también esperanzador al mismo tiempo, aunque el desenlace fuera fatal.
Solo me queda recomendar este libro, que es muy cortito, pero demasiado intenso. Es simplemente el retrato de un hombre, que solo buscaba reconciliarse con su pasado y su vida ¿Lo logró al final? quien sabe...

Es una gran novela gráfica. La ilustración es impecable, y el guión está a la altura. Sólo hay una cosa que al principio no le he dado importancia, pero al final me ha llegado a molestar y es el uso de una misma ilustración en varias viñetas, algunas de ellas hasta cuatro o cinco veces. Canta bastante, la verdad. En mi opinión le resta enteros a esta obra.

Este escritor es de locos, los libros que me he leído de él son en mi opinión muy buenos, este no es la excepción, me llevé una gran sorpresa pues el libro está contado en primera persona, es Lennon el que nos cuenta su vida, solo me queda por decir que fue un genio en la música y un cabron como persona

While I knew most of this, it was nice having a book that wasn’t only praise of John, but also the things that he needed to work on. I think the story was a little everywhere and jumped around time periods a lot but it was still a good graphic novel. The art was also wonderful!

Coming to this piece after reading The Fifth Beatle by Vivek Tiwary. Nice adaptation of the book and rather interesting take on Lennon the man suffering from the realitities of being "More popular than Jesus"..nice read..especially the dynamics with Yoko Ono.

Revelador! de una manera ingeniosa David Foenkinos le da la voz al "mito" Lennon para que en varias entrevistas pueda relatar su biografía, utilizando el formato de lenguaje que fué adoptando Lennon desde la franca timidez del adolescente solitario pasa al grotesco Teddy Boy que inicia sus viajes en las drogadicción, pasando por el Beatle que opaca y casi engulle al hombre, y para terminar con el reflexivo, arrepentido y mortal John. Pero sin duda en cada estrevista rescatar el genio que luchó por dar mensajes desde su atormentado interior.

Es la historia de John Lennon, el niño, el hombre, el músico, el esposo, el padre, el Beatle, el mito, la leyenda.
En sesiones de terapia, John hace un recuento de su vida, desde que era solo un chico de Liverpool, su niñez dolorosa, llena de soledades y abandonos, la relación con su madre, su lejano padre, tu tía Mimi.
La vida pasa y llega la época de la música, de la guitarra, de las composiciones, del deseo de ser grande. El inicio de los Beatles y todo el desenfreno y buena música, el descontrol, las giras, las mujeres, las groupies, la Beatlemania para luego llegar a la desconexión, al cansancio, a perder un poco el norte.
La llegada a su vida de Yoko y ese amor tan intenso, tan salvaje, tan salido de proporciones que tendría un efecto grandísimo en John, un encuentro con él mismo, música y composición diferentes, arte, proyectos, su hijo Sean y el fin de los Beatles.
