Dr. Darcy, an obstetrician has a visit with an older patient claiming her triplets were really quads and some one stole one. It appears that she saw a doppelgänger for one of her triplets and is now convinced one was stolen. As one was recently murdered she maybe just having a severe grief reaction. When he goes home to review her old paper file from his fathers practice he finds his home has been broken into and the file is gone. When she is found floating in her pool he begins to wonder if she wasn’t correct about the missing child. Quite a convoluted tale. The characters are ok and whilst the ending wasn’t a total surprise, the road to the conclusion was occasionally slow.
I thought this book had a lot of promise and parts were really well written and well plotted. Unfortunately I felt the story unfolded very slowly and then was very rushed at the end. There seemed to be a few too many coincidences going on within the characters and how they all related to each other, it did keep a bit of guessing going on through the book but just did not feel completely real. That said I am more than willing try another from his author.
Eric Darcy is an obstetrician who inherited his deceased father's patients. He met with one of the older ones, Malerie Abernathy. She had delivered triplets years before and had seen a woman on the street who looked exactly like of one of them - Dee Marie - who had died recently and might have been murdered. So she told Eric that she thought she had actually delivered quadruplets and one was taken from her. When Eric went home to check his father’s medical records on Malerie to see what was written, he discovered his house had been broken into. The records and some of his late wife, Lydia's, jewelry was gone. The next day Malerie was found dead in her swimming pool. Accidental drowning or murder?
This is a wonderfully written mystery with lots of twists and turns that kept me glued to the book. I loved that I had no idea who the murderer was throughout the story and was totally surprised when I found out. The characters are very easy to like. Eric is a very nice man who opened his house to his father-in-law and sister-in-law; letting them live there with him. I thought it was odd that a doctor would be trying to solve the murders but I realized that he thought he had a responsibility to the town and his patients to figure it out.
I have always loved Jacqueline Diamond's books so I was glad to be given a copy of her new mystery to review. If you like mysteries, you'll love this book.
A father's legacy. A disgruntled patient. And an unsolved murder.
Eric Darcy, an OB/GYN, never expected the outburst from one of his oldest patients. "My daughters weren't triplets...they were quadruplets." Oooh, interesting.
Although Dr. Darcy tried to pass this off as a mind trick or possible need for new glasses, he couldn't help but wonder if something had happened. Eric is then urged to search through his father's old records amidst his home's recent break-in.
Unlike a regular mystery, readers must delve into the medical scientifics to learn the history and depths of the patient's case. I thought the case of this missing quadruplet was a fascinating premise. Story was well-written and contains a certain degree of complexity. In fact, perhaps it was a little too complex. The number of characters in the story made it harder to keep tabs on it. It just seemed that this mystery was too convoluted and somewhat lagging. Mystery readers might enjoy the puzzling complexity and the scientific approach, but, personally, I would've liked this to have been more simplified.
This the first book in a mystery series starring Eric Darcy an Ob-Gyn physician in Southern California. It is also the first mystery by Jacqueline Diamond, a well-known romance writer. Although I have not read anything else by this author, I enjoyed this mystery very much.
Eric had been consulted by an old patient with questions about the possibility that her triplets were actually quadruplets. She claimed she had seen a young woman who looked exactly like her three daughters and she had been dreaming about having had quadruplets. Although Eric had decided the patient was having hallucinations, when the patient was found dead in her swimming pool, and likely murdered, he began questioning what had really happened.
This was an intriguing and suspenseful mystery with a complex cast of characters including the families of Eric's deceased wife and of the triplets, one of whom had been murdered six months before her mother died. I was not suspicious of the person who turned out to be the murderer until very close to the end. I would definitely enjoy reading more in this series.
Dr Eric Darcy finds himself with a puzzle on his hands: his patient claims that instead of having triplets, she gave birth to four babies. The woman all but accuses Eric's father, her former obstetrician, of stealing one of her children. With his father deceased, Eric sets out to uncover the mystery. Why did the patient think she saw the lost child? Then the woman is found dead in her swimming pool, leaving Eric with more than just a cold case to solve.
Though at first it was difficult to settle into this book, I did and the payoff was worth it! The author deals with the messiness of a troubled family with grace and skill. The mystery was delightfully twisty. Though I did guess the murderer shortly before the reveal, it was not easy to deduce (and it was, indeed, an outright guess).
This is an excellent book with well-drawn, memorable characters and a perplexing mystery. I especially liked being in Dr. Eric Darcy, the story's first person narrator's point of view. He's likeable, intelligent and knowledgeable, still getting over the mysterious death of his wife, but retains his practical sense of humor when dealing with challenges and difficult people in his life. When one of his patients is murdered he feels a duty to investigate along with his police detective best friend and his private investigator sister-in-law, who don't always appreciate his help. I very much enjoyed this book!
The Case of the Questionable Quadruplet A Safe Harbor Medical Mystery
JACQUELINE DIAMOND
Review by Roy Murry, Author
I enjoy mysteries as this where the finger of guilt points to many characters. The reader's mind spins, trying to solve the murders.
I usually have a good idea by mid-book who did it. In Ms. Diamond's mystery, the reader will be surprised at the end.
The suspense was killing me. Was it one of the daughters, or their mates, or another character implied? Who did the deeds?
Dr. Darcy's family members are involved on the legal side of the equation, while he fills in the gaps of how things are moving in the crimes and why the quadruplet maybe the center of his inquiry. His father's old files are critical to the events that follow the birth of triplets. Or where there four?
You will need to read this thrilling, well-written mystery to find out.
This is a clever and convoluted medical mystery. A definite page turner. Lots of interesting and a few unusual characters. I enjoyed seeing the changes the doctor was able to make in dealing with the death of his wife. In order to be involved enough to solve the mystery, he did get over involved with his patients. The religious details, Christian and Jewish, were interesting and not heavy handed. The medical details were just enough without being over informative. I look forward to reading the next one in this series.
The Case of the Questionable Quadruplet, by Jacqueline Diamond, is a mesmerizing tapestry of mystery and intrigue. The author provides ample detail and information, to keep the reader engaged and anxious to solve the mystery.
With a large cast of characters, the story moves along swiftly in and out of unexpected twists and turns. This complex story has a surprise ending. If you like mysteries, you will love this book. It is a page-turner.
Review November 29, 2022, by Rachel Jamerson, author.
The Case of the Questionable Quadruplet, written by Jacqueline Diamond, is the first book in the Safe Harbor Medical Mysteries series. This is the first book I have read by this author, but it won't be the last. This book was fast paced and held my attention from the first to the last page. The book is a clean language read, with well written character descriptions, an interesting plot and multiple twists and turns to keep the reader engaged. I am looking forward to reading the next book in this series.
In "The Case of the Missing Baby," a spellbinding mystery unfolds as a small-town doctor races against time to foil a murderer and reveal the truth behind a baby's vanishing. With an intriguing blend of memorable characters, a medical backdrop, and fast-paced storytelling, Jacqueline Diamond's series starter, "Safe Harbor Medical Mysteries," captures the reader's attention. This book promises a captivating journey with a "very clever mystery," as praised by NightOwlReviews. A promising beginning to a compelling series by the USA Today bestselling novelist.
I started this book, decided it was going to be a far-fetched story and started reading another book. When I finally got back to the story and met most of the characters I was engaged with the mystery and hooked on finding the solution. Dr. Darcy and the other characters fascinated me. The surviving sisters Doreen and Danielle make quite a contrast. The mystery takes several twists that keep it interesting. I look forward to checking out Jacqueline's other mysteries.
I don't know what's wrong with me, but I didn't enjoy this book as much as other reviewers seemed to. In fact, I quit several times and then went back to it. It was an interesting premise: a woman who gave birth to triplets and then discovered another identical girl the same age. It just could have played out better, imho. Also, I selected it because it's billed as a "medical mystery". I must have missed out on the medical parts.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading The Case of the Questionable Quadruplet. It's a fast-paced, murder mystery wrapped in intrigue. The characters are rich and believable and the story line is riveting. The author does a great job of setting the stage and the mood of each scene.
We never know what long range results our decisions might create. Dr. Darcy decides to help a patient and finds himself embroiled in a family history that he could never have imagined.
Diamond has written a story that keeps the reader wondering. The only wondering I was left with at the end was what’s up with Dr. Weird?
Super book! The curious characters and the seemingly disjointed, at times, circumstances combine to keep this book rolling along! It is well worth your time.
Dr Eric is pulled into the middle of several murder investigations of his friends. I could not have.predicted whodunnit until close to the end of the story. I really enjoyed this book.
Entertaining story with enough twists and turns to keep your attention and keep you guessing. Jacqueline Diamond brings each character to life so you feel as if you are friends.
A real page turner! It was written so well I felt that I really knew the characters. It keeps you guessing to the end. I’m looking forward to how these characters fit into book 2!
Boy I enjoyed this mystery. Dr Darcy a gyn, Tory a private investigator and the triplets/quadruplet, were fantastic. This story was very convoluting and kept me reading till the end.
Quando o ódio e a impunidade leva uma pessoa a cometer crimes cada vez mais hediondos na certeza de não ser pega no ato, colocando várias vidas em perigo. Uma narrativa interessante.
I usually can guess who is the culprit, but this one had me truly flummoxed until the very end. I look forward to reading the rest of the "Safe Harbor Medical Mysteries" series. Bravo!
An interesting, but not compelling read. The book summary had intrigued me so I read this quite quickly. However, I was somewhat disappointed in how the plot developed. There seemed to be a lot of coincidences and unrealistic occurrences which caused the book to seem less credible to me. Nonethless, this would be a good, almost cozy type of mystery to read on the beach, or in front of a fireplace on a cold winter’s night. Just go along for the ride and enjoy the read.
Ms. Diamond is known for writing within the mystery genre and this book keeps the reader on their toes as to who the culprit could possibly be from start to finish.
