Alvarez & Pescoli #7

Expecting to Die

Rate this book
The menacing woods of Grizzly Falls, Montana, are not for the faint of heart. But for some, they're the perfect setting for partying and pranks. They don't know there's a rapt audience amid the tangled trees, a killer with a different kind of game in mind, for whom the woods are dark and deep and perfectly deadly.

Some places earn their bad reputation through tall tales or chance. Grizzly Falls is different. Here, killers aren't just the stuff of legends and campfire lore. Someone is in the night-time shadows, watching the local teens play around in the moonlit woods. Waiting for the right moment, the right victim. Waiting to take away a life.

Detective Regan Pescoli is counting the days until her maternity leave. Exhausted and emotional, the last thing she needs is another suspected serial killer. Especially when her daughter, Bianca, is swept up in the media storm. When a reality show arrives in town, the chaos only makes it harder for Pescoli and her partner, Selena Alvarez, to distinguish rumor from truth.

Another body is found and another. And as the nightmare strikes closer to home, Pescoli races to find the terror lingering in the darkness, where there are too many places to hide and countless places to die.

Lisa Jackson is the number-one New York Times bestselling author of over ninety-five novels, including the Rick Bentz and Reuben Montoya Series, the Pescoli and Alvarez Series, the Savannah series, and numerous stand alone novels. She also is the co-author of One Last Breath, Last Girl Standing, and the Colony Series, written with her sister and bestselling author Nancy Bush, as well as the collaborative novels Sinister and Ominous, written with Nancy Bush and Rosalind Noonan. There are over thirty million copies of her novels in print and her writing has been translated into twenty languages.

Before she became a nationally bestselling author, she was a mother struggling to keep food on the table by writing novels, hoping against hope that someone would pay her for them. Today, neck deep in murder, her books appear on The New York Times, USA Today, and Publishers Weekly national bestseller lists.

With dozens of bestsellers to her name, Lisa Jackson is a master of taking readers to the edge of sanity—and back—in novels that buzz with dangerous secrets and deadly passions. She continues to be fascinated by the minds and motives of both her killers and their pursuers—the personal, the professional, and the downright twisted. As she builds the puzzle of relationships, actions, clues, lies, and personal histories that haunt her protagonists, she must also confront the fear and terror faced by her victims and the harsh and enduring truth that, in the real world, terror and madness touch far too many lives and families.

Incredible, action packed thriller with sightings of Sasquatch and untimely deaths of young women. Quite a cast of characters with many unforeseen events.

The events in a rural Montana town capture a reality star documentary producer which creates an added layer of drama as the number of murders climb.

Highly recommend!

Deputy Regan Pescoli and her daughter, Bianca, get involved in a murder investigation when Bianca stumbles over a corpse in the woods. But this won't be the only body. Regan is pregnant and close to going out on maternity leave. Emotional, exhausted, and still dealing with her ex-husband, the last thing she wants is to have to face another serial killer.

And when media advances on the small town with a reality show, things only get worse.

And someone ...or something ... is watching it all.

Although part of a series, this one does okay as a stand alone. The plot seems complex and a bit hard to follow at times. There are so many characters, it's not always easy to see who they are and how they relate to the story. I spent some time backtracking on pages I'd already read.

Being a huge Lisa Jackson fan, I was somewhat disappointed with this one, but not enough to put the book down and not finish. I'm accepting of the fact that any particular author may not be able to hit it out of the ballpark every time.

Many thanks to the author / Kensington Books - Zebra / Netgalley for the digital copy. Opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.

A group of teenagers gather to play a game of hide and seek and instead find the body of classmate, Destiny. In fact, the teenage girl that finds the body is none other than the daughter of Detective Regan Pescoli. Bianca tells her mother that just moments before discovery the body that some type of Big Foot/Sasquatch type creature was chasing her. Pescoli wonders "Did my daughter see Destiny's killer? " As the police search frantically for more clues, more young women go missing, the killer gets even closer.

I enjoyed reading the book, but didn't feel that it was hard to put down. Straightforward mystery solving, good characters, but I had pretty much figured out "whodunit" right away.

Thanks to NetGalley for an e-arc of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I struggle with this review because this is the first book I have read by Lisa Jackson and it is book in a series.
This story seem to just trug along and at times with the endless backstories that I am sure are for first time readers to the story but honestly just got this reader lost many times over. I am not sure I could count how many different characters were in the book and some that were not necessary at times. I get that Detective Regan Pescoli is an angry woman and pregnant. I couldn't connect with her as a reader which made it difficult to connect to the story. I believe the author created Selena Alvarez for those who couldn't connect to Regan but instead of connecting I felt the story was disconnected and the characters had zero chemistry.

Many times the story simple fell flat and I struggled even finishing the book. Characters were hard to connect with, unnecessary characters in the story and the ending fell flat and unbelievable at times.

This book might give her followers the story they wanted but for new readers to her books it turned this reader off.

This was a quick read for me; I was immediately pulled into the story and through most of the book didn't want to put it down. There were moments or stretches where the story lulled (hence the rating). At some points in the police investigation, the investigation felt like Selena and Regan were spinning their wheels. I know this happens in real investigations and it did feel real to the story. However, in a story this is where the side plots need to keep you involved and the story interesting. Instead it felt like the story lulled and I had to do some skim reading to get back involved with the plot.

In this one, Regan was getting more page time than Selena and I thought, during and especially after I finished, that both her current husband and her ex didn't get enough development. From a personal standpoint, I wanted to see more of Santana and from a plot standpoint, I felt that Luke, the ex, needed more development. Part of this could be that I haven't read the prior books in this series. But for me, Santana, Regan's current husband, seemed very flat.

The plot centered on the death of a high school girl, Destiny, and the relationships she had with other kids both her age and those older than her. And unfortunately with the number of "persons of interest" and their respective parents it was difficult to remember who was the son or daughter of whom, or was the BF of whom, who was the sibling of whom, etc. Plus when additional bodies start turning up, it did get to be a busy read.

Overall I did like the plot, I liked the team of Alvarez and Pescoli and I like Lisa Jackson's writing. And now, I think I need to start reading this series from the 1st book...

I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Ms. Jackson does a phenomenal job of crafting edge-of-your-seat suspense. I've been a fan ever since I read Deep Freeze. This book gets your heart pounding and keeps you reading well past your bedtime. Pescoli and Alvarez make a great team and kick ass when it comes to taking down the bad guy. The murder investigation is proving to be quite tricky in this case, not to mention a Bigfoot sighting that is a puzzler. Hold onto your seats because you're in for a wild ride. This author is always on my auto-buy list. Read one and you'll see why.

Only daughter Destiny finds out she's eight weeks pregnant, she couldn't tell her mum and dad or the father of the baby as he would be pissed. She needed to tell her boyfriend Donny that she's pregnant. Destiny told her folks that she was going for a walk, but was really meeting up with Donny in a remote area of woods. Destiny and Donny have an argument, and Destiny ends up having to run, run, run! for her life to save her and her baby.

Expecting To Die, the seventh Pescoli and Alvarez novel, is set in eerie, dangerous Grizzly Falls, Montana. There a group of teenagers are playing in the woods when Pescoli’s daughter finds a body of a classmate while being chased by “bigfoot”. This sighting brings in a reality show that makes dealing with this and the following disappearances harder and harder to investigate as the deceits and sensationalism grow.

This was another good read by Lisa Jackson. It can be read as a stand alone, however it would be better read in series order due to the continuing story arc.

I would like to thank Netgalley and Kensington Books for an advance copy of Expecting To Die, the seventh Pescoli and Alvarez police procedural set in Grizzly Falls, Montana.

A group of teenagers meet in the woods at night to do whatever teenagers do and Bianca Pescoli gets separated from her friends and is chased through the woods by a big, hairy, smelly beast till she reaches the creek and literally stumbles over a dead body. Her mother, Detective Regan Pescoli doubts that it was Bigfoot who chased her but the local enthusiasts beg to differ, so while Pescoli senior, at 35 weeks pregnant, is busy investigating the death of Destiny Montclare Pescoli junior is starting her reality tv career by re-enacting her flight through the woods.

I wasn't overly impressed by the previous novel in the series, Deserves To Die, but I'm happy to report that Expecting To Die is a welcome return to form. Grizzly Falls is an extremely dangerous place to live so Pescoli and Alvarez are very experienced homicide detectives but Destiny's death and the others that follow have them initially stumped because they are dealing with teenagers who lie without compunction, take omertá to a whole new level and when all else fails hide behind their parents' desire to protect them. Watching Pescoli and Alvarez jump through hoops to get any kind of information makes for a very good read and I would never have guessed the ending in a million years.

With Bianca involved from the start this is very much a Pescoli novel (the author concentrates on one or the other's private life in each novel). She is 35 weeks pregnant and feeling it so she's grumpy and not at all pleased at Bianca's involvement in the reality tv series. Again, what happens with this is unexpected and very interesting.

Expecting To Die held my interest from start to finish with its twisty plot, likeable protagonists and good pacing. I have no hesitation in recommending it as a good read.

Though this book was somewhat buried in my TBR pile, I grabbed it because my recent reads were new authors to me and I was aching for something and someone familiar. This book is #7 in Lisa Jackson’s To Die series. While there were obvious references to things that had previously happened, (quite a few actually) this book was perfectly enjoyable being read as a standalone. I’m fairly certain I’ve read a couple of the previous ones, but they were awhile ago and had no bearing in me enjoying this book.
I give this story, 4 stars, I almost say 3 ½ but since I can’t do halfsies here, I rounded up. This book started slow. And felt just a bit scattered in the storyline. I crave the books that grab you from page one and pull you in so close that you can’t put the book down – where you wish you could devise a way to read while you’re in the shower. This won’t do that, but the story is steady, builds momentum throughout, and all loose endings are tied by the time you get to the end. It took some 40% of the book before I reached that point, but once I did, it was a page turner.
While I don’t love Pescoli, (I’m going to chalk by dislike of her to her pregnancy hormones hahaha, My husband always says I’m a mess while pregnant, maybe she is too lol)I loved her dynamic with her partner Alvarez and her husband Santana. Her daughter Bianca developed perfectly throughout the story and the storyline was unique. I look forward to the next installment!
Thank you so much to Netgalley for an advance copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. It’s been a pleasure!

I struggled to get through this one. Normally I love her books, but this one was not fabulous. It had too many characters--the list of suspects got so long that I didn't care who did it by the end.

4.5 stars. In Grizzly Falls, Montana, Homicide Detectives Regan Pescoli and Selena Alvarez are called to the scene when a young girl's body is found in a creek located in deep woods. Regan's daughter Bianca stumbled on the body as she was being chased through the woods by a tall, furry, bad smelling creature. Bianca secretly met a group of teenagers to play a game at midnight, never expecting to find the body of someone they know. The teenagers are obviously hiding secrets to protect one of their own. A group of Bigfoot believers bring in a reality show producer to sensationalize the supposed sighting as Regan tries to deal with her daughter's vision of stardom, impending birth of her next child and solving the murders that continue to occur. The dead girl's pregnancy brings forth a slew of potential fathers and, therefore, possible killers.

Lisa Jackson is one of my favorite authors. I love her writing style and have never read one of her books that I didn't like. I've read most of the Die books featuring Alvarez and Pescoli and I really admire these ladies. I enjoy reading about the happenings in their personal lives.

I've been reading about Bigfoot sightings for as long as I can remember and I found it interesting that Jackson included this legend in one of her books. I eagerly await the next book in this series.

Bianca is at a party where the teens are playing hide and seek. Something large chases her through the woods and she falls in the creek at Reservoir Point and discovers a dead body.

The body turns out to be that of a schoolmate Destiny. Convinced that the Father of the baby Destiny was carrying is the killer Selena and Regan set off to track down the likely teen killer. But before they can Lindsey (another one of Bianca's schoolmates) is run off the road and eventually found dead in her car.

Meanwhile TV reality star Barclay Sphinx has come to town to create a show about Big Foot and at first Bianca is cast in the staring role, to Luke's (Bianca's Father, Regan's ex) dismay when Laura (another schoolmate with big tits) is supposedly chased in the woods by Big Foot, Sphinx decides to make Laura the star of the show. In attempt to get Bianca back in the starring role Luke hires the local drug dealer (the Preacher's son, Tophman) to kidnap her. But what Luke doesn't know is that Tophman is hanging out with Destiny's killer.

Husband stealing sluts don't fare very well in this book. Marjory Tufts is killed when her Baby Daddy is afraid that Marjory's husband will discover their affair, since the husband is shooting blanks. Michelle dumps Luke for Sphinx and a shot at TV stardom but Sphinx has little use for Michelle once he wraps things up in Grizzly Falls.

Luckily Bianca has inherited her Mother's brains because she is going to need every weapon she can lay her hands on to get away from the two boys, who kidnapped her on Luke's behalf.

Meanwhile Reagan is in the hospital giving birth to Tucker Grayson Santana.

This may be the last Selena Alvarez/Regan Pescoli novel as Regan is considering being a stay at home Mom.

I enjoyed previous books in this series but this one failed to connect with me. The plot was quite slow to progress and just an over abundance of dead bodies to be believable. Too. many characters for me to get to grips with! Glad the baby has arrived though. Not the best book in the series but I would read another by the author. A good holiday read.Thank you Net Galley for my copy.

This is the last book for 2017 and I think it's time to give up on this series. I have enjoyed the serial killer mysteries but lately since the past couple I've been weighed down by too much negativity. Not the mysteries themselves, but the characters attitudes. I find I can't stand the snarky and bitchy. I consider myself a strong woman and yet I don't run around being negative and craping all over every experience. It's just crawling under my skin and it's time to say goodbye. Thanks for the memories Regan and Alvarez.

I have read many good books by Lisa Jackson, but this one bored me to tears. I got more than halfway through with it, then skipped to the final 15 pages to put myself out of my misery. The plot line was too confusing, too many characters (most with whom I did not connect) and quite frankly, I just didn't care who did it and why. My new mantra is "Life is too short to read books I don't love"!

Bianca Pescoli is with a group of her school friends in the woods on a dark night when she is chased by 'something' and she lands in a creek but she is even more horrified when it seems she has landed on a decomposing corpse. Homicide detective Regan Pescoli is Bianca's mother has the task of finding out who the deceased girl was and it is made all the more difficult due to the fact that Bianca is sure it was Bigfoot that chased her. I read this as a standalone book as I haven't read any of the previous books in the series and It didn't spoil my enjoyment at all. It has made me want to read the other books now though as I found it quite a page turner once I got into the story. There was a little bit of a lull in the excitment when there were more and more characters introduced and I had to really concentrate to keep up. I have given this 48 purely down to the slight lull.I loved the plot and the way it had me guessing about the 'killer'.
Thank you to http://nudge-book.com/ for the copy of the book.

In Grizzly Falls, Montana a big portion of the residents believe that Big Foot walks among them. When a group of teens steal away in the night to party, Detective Regan Pescoli’s daughter becomes one of them.

Something bad happened to her daughter, someone did attack her! She did find the body of a classmate who was reported missing a week prior; but really attacked her?

As more young women begin to mysteriously disappear, Pescoli, who should have taken maternity leave by now, and her partner must rush to stop the killing by finding the murderer. But now, a reality show producer is muddying the waters by filming a Big Foot reality Show at the exact location where the first girl’s body was found and her daughter was attacked.

Just as the case is winding up, Pescoli goes into labor and her partner who cannot locate her must complete the task herself.

Heart pounding action!

I received a copy of this book from Netgalley in exchange for my honest review. The dead body of a teenage girl is discovered while a group of teenagers are playing a midnight game of hide and seek in the woods. Detective Pescoli, who is due to give birth any day, and Detective Alvarez are on the case. The suspect list is long and the case becomes increasingly difficult as more teenagers begin to disappear and more bodies are being discovered. I found this story to be highly engaging and it kept my interest from beginning to end. I look forward to reading more books in this series!

Review:
This was my first time reading a Mystery by Lisa Jackson so I wasnt sure what to expect but I have to say I really enjoyed this one more than I thought I would tho that Coyote Chase was abit much 🤣.

The Characters were fun and interesting to read about. I didn't have a favorite since I seemed to like all the characters.

The Setting was beautifully described which made me feel like I was actually in the woods while reading especially when the scenery and Coyote Chase was described.

Overall a Good Book 7 in this Mystery Thriller Series!! Can't wait to read more by Lisa in the future!!

How could I have never read a Lisa Jackson book before? Now that I have found her, I've got a lot of catching up to do. Can't wait!

Although this isn't the first book in the series, I felt that the author gave enough background info that I didn't feel lost as to who each character was. But now, I want to go back to the beginning of the series and see what I have missed.

This story was a real nail biter with so much suspense! Was the killer a human or a "Big Foot" in the woods of Montana? There were some terrifying scenes that had me glad I wasn't home alone.

I loved the personality of both of the main characters, Detectives Pescoli and Alvarez. I look forward to more thrilling reads about them, their work and their families.

Looking for a well written and suspense filled novel? This is one I'd highly recommend!

Expecting to die by Lisa Jackson.
A dead body is found by a young girl who's with her friends playing tag in the woods. She stumbles upon it after being chased by what she thinks is a beast. She calls the police who calls her mum who is a sheriff.
A very enjoyable read with great characters. I loved the story. Wasn't sure who it could be in had a few suspects. It wasn't who I thought it was. Highly recommended. 5*. I voluntarily reviewed an advanced copy of this book from netgalley.

Alvarez and Pescoli are very strong lead females in jobs mostly dominated by males traditionally, especially in a place like Grizzly Falls, Montana. This series is just as good as her Montoya and Bentz - New Orleans cop/crime series. If you like murder, crime, and cop novels with a slice of the thriller aspect than this is a must read series. I really like how their personal lives and relationships are just as much a part of the stories as their crime fighting. I guess there is a new novel for this series coming sometime this year and I'll look forward to reading that one as well.

Page 1- A pregnant cop
Page 50 - Omg! the cop is pregnant!
Page 100- Whoa! Are you pregnant and middle of the investigation?
Page 200- The cop is pregnant and the victim also is pregnant. No one got a clue about the murderer who was already introduced in page number 10.

Teens and their teenagery stupid problems. What a crappy book ! Never touching a book by this author ever again.
