What a beautifully, BEAUTIFULLY written story! This is the first book that I've read by Anne Jolin, and I can assure you I will be devouring ever last one of her books soon! This woman is a writing QUEEN! Every last sentence is written with such heartfelt detail, you can literally feel the emotions like they are dripping right off the pages. You completely sense how personal this story is for the author with how much heart she puts into it. I've never personally experienced the tragedy of addiction, but within these pages, Anne Jolin creates a story so profound that you really feel the emotional struggle on what it's like to deal with it, how to carry on with that loss, and what grief can do to destroy a person.
I can't even explain within this simple review how beautiful the words in this book are. I should start by saying that at the heart of it all, this story is about Charleston, a woman who is struggling to deal with the loss of her brother (to addiction), and her first love who abandons her around the same time, with no form of goodbye, just up and disappears. She loses herself in her grief, and as a result, uses men as her salve, to receive from them the comfort and attention that make her feel better. She herself, becomes an addict. But with men. She is deathly afraid of losing herself to love again, and as a result keeps any form of attachment at a safe distance.
Enter the three gorgeous men that come into her life, and in turn, bring out a parts of Charleston that she lost. Beau, the gorgeous politician that sweeps her off her feet and is the sweetest man ever!! Maverick, the man bun wearing, body full of muscle, dark and mysterious, hunk of man meat who I would want slamming me against a wall any day! And then Dean, her ex who left her high and dry, who unceremoniously, comes back into her life and tries to explain his past mistakes and receive closure. (BOY, did I want to choke him to death and kiss him all at the same time)
Through her time with these men, Charleston is left to figure out who she has become as a woman, and how she wants to continue living her life. There is a lot of inner dialogue from Charleston as well, as she tries to maneuver around her past, her fear, and her grief. Which was beautiful to read. But at the same time, I found it took away from the build up into her relationships, their interactions and the time spent with the three men. As a result, I didn't really build any sort of strong connection or strong feelings for any one of them, and it was hard to say who I really liked from the three (although Maverick was flippin HOT during those intimate scenes!)
Another little MINOR detail that sort of left me wanting in this book were the sex scenes. Each time, the build up was sooo steamy, and with three men in the mix, I would have liked some lengthier and detailed sexy time. But having said this, I feel that the authors purpose of this book was about Charleston's grief process and how she deals with the loss of people in her life, and how each of these men allowed her to see the woman she was choosing to be. As a result, I can see why steamy sex scenes may have taken away from the important message of the story.
The ending is what completely got me. I have to say before it, I was undecided about my star rating for this book. I went from 4, to 4.5 and pretty much stayed there up until the end just because of my loss of connection with the men. But that ending knocked the air out of me, made me cry my eyes out and then left me with a big fat small on my face. I absolutely 100% LOVED the ending. I've never come across a book that has ended that way, and I think if it was any other author or any other story, I might have thrown my kindle and smashed it to pieces. But Anne Jolin made my heart hurt and soar all at the same time! It was genius really, and beautiful! What an inspiring message about the true meaning of love! Loved loved loved this book! 5 stars all the way!!
