This one was definitely one of the oddest books I have had the pleasure of reading lately. What drew me in at first, was the beautiful cover with the men's silhouettes and the colours. Plus, it helped that it was free at the time of me grabbing a copy. :)

Diving in, I already knew that it was going to be one of these odd mpreg romances where it's possible for men to get pregnant as well, but I had no idea that it would be set in the contemporary setting with only a slight scifi alteration to it. The few rare mpreg romances I have read before have used the good old paranormal/supernatural fantasy excuse as to why men are all of a sudden having babies on their own (it's like someone installed them with their own womb and uterus). This time, however, it's all because an evil scientist made some tests for the military that had a side effect of all men getting pregnant when they wish to when he contaminated the water supply with that chemical/supplement/whatever.

I don't know why this alteration affected only men, not women, too, as they consume the same water as men do. Also, what are the changes to the animals? Nobody knows as the only change Reaves talks about is the one where men are pregnant (yes, our hero Christen happens to be one of them). And are super duper emotional during the time.

My thoughts continue on my book blog HERE.

Confused genre

So I liked the story and the idea behind the story. But there were several areas in this book where the author either got confused about these two MC NOT being shifters, or she was writing a shifter story and converted to no shifter. As far as I know humans don't have cubs, mating it for animals, and marking ones neck as a sign of submission -- another animal trait.

There were also times when I felt this was a m/f story originally that the author decided to switch to m/m yet leaving the men with female stories. The M/M genre is not one that can have any story thrown into simply by changing the sex of one of the characters.

Overall, I think this story needs some work.

Non shifter Mpreg novel. This is the second book from Ms. Reaves that I have read. Her character and scene building is excellent but was looking for the Alpha and destined mate vibe. Got something different not bad but different.

Christen was a snarky, selfish asshole that needed Jaxson to teach him that there is more to life than your career.

There are times when I feel sorry for new authors or self published authors. They have a story to tell and a need to share it or a dream of becoming an author. Unfortunately without a reputable publishing company they are forced to depend on whomever they can afford when it comes to proofing and editing.

There are times I am shocked that an editor had the balls to actually put their name on a book as the editor. This is one of those times.

EVEN THE DEDICATION HAS A PROOFING ERROR!!!

pa·tience\ˈpā-shən(t)s\
noun
1 : the capacity, habit, or fact of being patient

pa·tient\ˈpā-shənt\
adjective
: able to remain calm and not become annoyed when waiting for a long time or when dealing with problems or difficult people

See how those words are used differently?

Seriously, this book is full of random words that make no sense in a sentence or wrong words used.

Yes, these examples are more proofing problems than editing but are part of an overall problem of a really bad editing job. An editor should help an author coax the story out of the chaff that an author throws up onto the paper.. or word processing program. They are supposed to clear out any extraneous information not moving the story forward and keep events in order. Make sure the correct character is talking participating in the activity etc. NONE of that took place before this book was released.

That is why I sometimes feel sorry for new or self published authors. There are little bits of an interesting and entertaining story here IF YOU GET THROUGH THE CHAFF as well as the misspelled words, wrong words, random letters or punctuation.

If you have the patience <-- see what I did there? If correct spelling and punctuation are not required then you might be able to enjoy this book.

I thought the characters were interesting and well developed, both Christen & Jaxson kept me interested enough to keep going even when I got ragey. There is enough information about the secondary characters to know what is coming in the next books. The drama was good and the bad guy was over the top enough to be entertaining.

I'd dearly love to give this more than 2 stars but cannot. At this point I'm not even sure I'm going to continue with the series even though I'd like to know what is up with Ethan!

To Giovanna directly-If you happen to see this review; Nobody, NOBODY can proof their own work. It's impossible. Also, that editor listed on the copyright page owes you an apology and a refund.

Not a bad start :)

I really like the direction of the book. It's the first non-shifter Mpreg book I have read and I really enjoyed it. I really like each of the characters the author introduced into the book, and cannot wait to see where this story leads.

One of the items I would like to point out is that this book really does need an editor. IMO, the author does a good job with the dialogue between the characters, which flows well. However, I feel that the inner dialogue of the characters does not flow as well.

***DNF @ 26%***

It's my own fault really. I thought this was an harlequin story. One I read many years ago. I don't really know why I thought that because... the cover *facepalm*.

But this story was... bad. Really, really really bad. Every trope that comes with the unexpected baby trope was done so bad. Not sexy at all (even though the main characters say that the other one is sexy on every goddamn page).

When I read the following:

I knew I would not enjoy this. But as somebody who enjoys watching things crash and burn (ramptoerist) I could not stop reading.

Then I read this (after a lot more doucheness from both characters):

description
*Sigh*. Get. The. Fuck. Out.

description
THAT IS NOT SEXY! That's called stalking and abuse of power with a light sprinkling of intimidation.

That was it. I was done.

Look I'm a big fan of what I call 'bookporn'. Quick, easy, smutty reads. A little bit of angst and I'm a happy camper. I don't really mind crappy spelling and or grammar. I'm a fast reader and most of the time I don't even notice mistakes others would catch.

But this story was Bad.

As if the author thought that the actions would be sexy without actually visualising if it would be sexy in real life. And even if it would be creepy in real life, you can't just have the characters think 'oh but he is so sexy so that's okay.'

NO, A BAD TOUCH IS A BAD TOUCH.

Unless you asked for it beforehand. Or if the characters know each other for some time. Such a cliche but consent is actually sexy.

But this...

Velvet Eyes

The author had so many grammatical mistakes and the plot line was so messy...

They repeatedly used the line "velvet eyes and blond hair" for a side character. The misuse of velvet is funny the first time but not every damn time they mention the character.

Also, the ending is so unrealistic in terms of biology and parent traits and how they are passed on.

There is so much wrong with this book, it will take me the entire weekend to dissect it.

The only good part was the "pushy bottom."

Okayyy so.... this was not what I was expecting. When I read a mpreg, I expect it to have sifters or something like that. Not some weird mad scientist crap. And the writing.. ugh I hate it when the names of people are used over and over and over again in one freaking paragraph! It's distracting honestly. I think it got better though as the story progressed though. I also really did not like the beginning. I'm surprised I finished it. Anyways not my cup of tea!

2,5 stars. Nice, fluffy read with an option of more. The characters were likable and the world building interesting. A bit more background information about the incident that enabled male pregnancies would have been nice, but maybe that was saved for the next book. With some serious editing this could become a good book/ series.

Disappointing and full of errors

I seriously disliked the characters. Christen was annoying from the get-go and I couldn't warm up to Jaxon. Even the side characters were very shallow. I found myself dreading this read. It was very immature and it felt like something a teenager would imagine adults doing. Even worse, the book is overflowing with errors. If I didn't find the story juvenile and characters lacking, I would say it needs a really good editor. As it stands, I wouldn't bother with anything short of a massive overhaul. Thankfully this book was written more than a few years ago, so hopefully the author has matured in that time. She's certainly prolific enough. Whether I'll ever find out.... I'll have to think about it.

Great story, needs an editor to be a homerun

This was a great story. I almost gave up after the first few pages because it was more telling and less showing. I'm glad I stuck with it cause things really picked up. I loved the character development and the author did a nice job of toggling between perspectives. I also enjoyed that Chris and Jax didn't just jump into a relationship. The tension felt authentic and the payoff was worth it. It was engaging and kept me turning the pages. An editor or even a proof read would have made this a slam dunk. Little mistakes pulled me out of the flow of the story but I'd definitely read more from this author.

I am still trying to wrap my mind around the fact that I enjoyed this story as much as I did, considering all of the crap that had me wanting to pull my hair out!!! Missing words... punctuation errors... the list goes on and on and where the heck did the whole "mating, marking... growling" thing come from about halfway through the book? This is NOT a shifter story... maybe the author's thoughts went off on a tangent for a bit? Either way... it WAS a good story, faults and all! I look forward to reading book two of this series and truthfully, I am hoping for some major improvements in the proofreading department! *grin*

Good story.

This was a good book but it could have been better without all the back story of the minor characters. I found myself skipping entire Pages just because I didn't need the information and I felt like it was filler fluff. The 2 main characters were wonderful and I felt that she did a good job describing them and making believe their story.
My only issues was that there were a few grammar and spelling mistakes.
Not sure if I will read the other books in the series.
Also the book ends at 80% and the rest is just extra.

Needs editing

Quite a few grammatical errors throughout that continually tripped me up and hindered the natural flow. Also, it seems like the author kept getting new ideas throughout the story and kept trying to incorporate them, but it ends up making it seem like a REALLY bad crime show instead of a compelling story. All in all, the characters felt one dimensional, and the story as a whole was flat.

Wonderful story

I really enjoyed reading this story. Christen and Jaxson are a great couple after a slow start and some angst. I liked the characters and how their relationship developed. The love that develops between them is intense. The plot was intricate and unexpectedly full of action. The only reason I gave this a 4 star review and not 5 stars is because it needed some light editing both in the plot and the grammar.

I greatly enjoy this series, as well as the author. Christen and Jaxson's love story is entertaining from beginning to end. Giovanna Reaves adds a delightful voice to the M/M genre. Mpreg may not be for everyone, but neither is m/m for that matter. Either way, I'm excited for more of this series and to see what the author comes out with next!

Disappointed

This book is so full of grammatical errors it is difficult to read. The story was interesting and had potential. If the author is serious about writing, she should spend more time editing and rewriting. I had planned to read the other two books in her trilogy but will probably pass.

There are grammatical errors so beware of that. The overall story was good. I loved the relationship Christen has with his twin brothers and once he stops being an a** his relationship with Jaxson. The little surprise near the end I didn't see coming but was wow.
I'm hoping we get more of their family in the upcoming books since everyone seems related in a way and should crossover.

I enjoyed this to a point, I wanted to strangle Christen he drove me nuts and Jaxson had the patience of a saint. I liked the storyline, but it could of had a little more depth, and a little better editing. I will read book 2.

While the storyline for this book sounded interesting and the premise good it was exceptionally bad, or not at all, edited, I could not continue reading even as I wanted to find out what would happen with the main characters
