I only have myself to blame. I was warned. I take full responsibility for my own sickness. I can't be warned off. I need help.
*SPOILERS AHEAD*
Oh, where do I start? The premise was promising in a HP sort of way. Hero has an eeeeeevil family who fabricate evidence against the heroine because she's working class and black. He swallows the evidence and humiliates the heroine at the wedding. Then he proceeds to try and run her down with his car, ruin her career, and later any hopes of her finding someone else. And, of course, she turns up pregnant, with triplets! Take that, Lynne Graham heroines. As far as I recall, the best you ever squeeze out is secret twins. Although these triplets weren't exactly secret, the heroine tried to tell the hero, but he had her thrown out of his office for the lying whore she was.
The hero's family is lily white, moneyed, and "sophisticated". The hero is even named Ashley Hollingsworth. A name worthy of a daytime soap. I pictured him wearing a polo shirt with a sweater tied around the neck. Although, Ashley is so rarely used as a man's name these days that it threw me.
The hero finds out five years too late that the heroine was pregnant and the evidence against her was fabricated by his loving sister. We get no satisfying grovel. Oh, he's sorry, but he has all sorts of excuses. Don't you see?!? He's always loved her, but he was hurt and he turned that love against her. He didn't understand his own feelings! He had a horrible mother! But, he suffered too! He had to sleep with a ton of trampy, shallow blondes and still couldn't forget the heroine. He had to rule his empire with an iron fist and be a dick to everyone because his heart had been turned to stone, y'all! Friggin stone, I tell you. He clearly suffered most of all.
The heroine did overcome the hero's efforts to destroy her life and she had a decent family, but she was far too forgiving. Once he found out about the kids, she was far too unrealistically willing to share them. I realize children have a right to know their father, but these are four year olds and their dear daddy has proven himself to be emotionally on their level and has a cruel streak a mile wide to boot. And, of course, she can't help feeling sorry for him and falling right back into bed with him when she learns about all his suffering. Understandable, obviously....
And, there's no big comeuppance for the family. The sister who did the most damage by paying some dude to drug and sexually assault the heroine on tape gets off scott free. The snobby mom does get kicked out of the family when it's revealed she was never the classy 'Katherine' but instead a redneck named 'Rhonda' who likely crawled out of the nearest trailer park and tricked the hero's father by acting like the perfect society woman. Her crime was clearly the greatest. Yeah, she was a snobbish, racist, hateful piece of work who hid her knowledge of the secret kids from the hero. The hero had no responsibility to check things out for himself. It was natural for him to take the word of the mother he hated and blamed for his dad's death. Her word had never proved untrustworthy. The sister, on the other hand, was just misunderstood.
This was entertaining in a absurd sort of way, but nowhere near worth $5. Despite the warning, I know those of you who share my disorder will be unable to resist the pull of a crazed trainwreck. I weep for us all.
So the H in this one gets a dvd of the h with another guy days before the wedding, it is a recent dvd based on the h's physical appearance. Now this H knows that his family hates, and I do mean HATES the h.
Does he question? Does he investigate? He KNOWS how evil his family is and is supposedly so in love with the nice, sweet h but he can't even be bothered to question this dvd. Instead he literally dumps the h at the altar in front of everyone and uses nasty names too.
He knew about this dvd for a few days before the wedding - plenty of time to call it off quietly.
Then the h tries to tell him she is preggers, he kicks her out of his office. She is a new lawyer herself and graduated top of her class, he gets her blackballed from the most of the legal community, she has to take a public defender position, cause they are the only one who will hire her. Then he sees her out on a date with another man whom he knew in college and he decides he has to warn the other man off from he evil ways -- FIVE years later.
Then he finds out that he has triplets, his mum lied about investigating the h and her not being preggers, the dvd was made by his sister and the h's sorta friend - they drugged her and set her up for sexual assault and filmed it and his brother knew about it and did nothing.
The h has spent five years caring for triplets, establishing a career and moving on with her life - there was a TON of angst, pain and suffering struggle on the h's part- she knew she was innocent and yet the H wouldn't even listen to her.
The H meanwhile, is whining cause he has to have sub-par sex with a variety of lovely ladies, he acts like a total jerk to everyone and it is all about his pain and yet for some reason his friends still want to be his friend.
Then everything is all better cause he finds out the truth. Who cares about the h and her trauma, he gets to be with his children, he gets the h into bed right away and even the h's own mum decides that since this POS supposedly loves the h, he is okay to have in the family. - WHAT?
He loved the h at the time of the wedding too, and it still did not stop him from doing his best to ruin her life. The fact that he did not succeed is sorta immaterial and more a testament to the character of the h.
Then there is the fact that his family participated in a first degree felony of kidnapping, assault and sexual assault - the h was VIOLATED, yet nothing is done about it because the perpetrator is the H's POS sister and brother and they are kinda sorry and want to play aunt and uncle. Again, I have to say WHAT?
What should have happened is the h, once the truth was established, used the dvd and the threat of prosecution to force the H to forfeit parental rights. Then she should have gone to the police and had the lot of them prosecuted - including the H for concealing a crime and obstruction - thus getting his sorry rear disbarred.
She should also have taken out a restraining order against the H, and when he broke it, had his rear arrested again. This H was no prize AT ALL, he obviously had a lot of issues - especially since everything was always somebody else's fault. Sure he was sorry, but that and $4.95 at Starbucks will get you a latte - so frankly who CARES how sorry he is, he is still a whiney loser who can't take responsibility for his actions and NOT a role model or ideal parent.
Really the only thing he had was money, so perhaps a trust fund for the kids and then boot him off to Siberia.
Unfortunately, none of what should have happened did, instead we get the usual magic pump and dump and all is forgiven all around with the h being sorry for being so standoffish for five minutes.
Not worth the price really, but if it is free or under $1.00 the drama could be amusing.

I loved the bones of this story. Strong and smart heroine is completely screwed over by a fiance easily lead by his stick up the ass family? Let the action begin!
Fast forward 5 years and maybe time for our gal to grow a backbone. Do I dare hope? Maybe.
But that's not even my issue. I quit before I could get the chance to completely ascertain that information.
Why'd I throw in the towel?
The editing. I very rarely get pissed due to editing issues but you know what? I paid five bucks for this book with the hopes I'd FINALLY get to experience a wronged woman stand up to her asshole man. The lack of editing completely ruined that for me.
5 Dollars. That's my morning coffee and that little sleeve of nuts I always buy. I realize it's not a ton of cash but so much joy can come from 5 hundred pennies. I'd hope any book I purchased on a whim for that amount at least involved a proof reader.
Ha, ha, ha. Joke's on me. The reviews warned me. This was terrible - but in a different way.
I so wanted the writing to match the OTT plot. I can get behind jilting at the altar, secret triplets and betrayals all around. And to give the author credit, all the plot threads were tied up nicely.
But the dialogue was clunky and the characterization cartoonish. Hero was ridiculous. Heroine a saintly doormat (until the catfight with her bff). I lost track of all the slapped faces. Hero was only kneed in the balls once. *sigh*
And yet I read it and find myself wishing this had been adapted for Netflix with some decent actors to add some nuance/fun/characterization.
I'm screaming... have you ever read a book so bad it doesn't deserve any stars? like not even 1/8 of a star?
I'm actually shaking I cannot finish this book. I got to 75% before giving up and throwing my kindle across the room because THIS BOOK IS SO BAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! there is so much racism and misogyny i cannot breathe.
so what happens is a black woman falls in love with a white guy I'm pretty sure that this is a romance but all I got was to stay the hell away from white men bc this hero is the devil.....
so after that horrendous reading experience, I'm advising you from the bottom of my heart to never automatically buy a book from your kindle without checking it's Goodreads reviews first... it won't end well for you. It really will not.
Ashley gets pictures of his bride to be Skylar with another man. He jilts her at the altar. Doesn’t ask her for an explanation or allow her a voice. He threatens to run her over as he leaves the wedding. Depressed Skylar finds out she’s pregnant with triplets. When she tries to tell Ashley he kicks her out of his office and refuses to speak to her. While Skylar is suicidal over the break up, Ashley goes on their honeymoon with OW who he later marries for 42 days. Typically Ashley has a lot of random ons for 5 years while Skylar is celibate for 5 years. They reconnect after 5 years. He still thinks she’s a cheat until he finds out his sister gave her a date rape drug and took pics of her with some man. The MCs forgive the druggy sister and live hea…. Yeah it was stupid!

This author writes very well I was sucked in from the beginning and my jaw dropped couple of times. There was drama, angst and it was just not a book you can put down!
I hated Ashley seriously his cruelty takes the cake but what others did to the Skyler was even worse! At times it was understandable but this was emotional read, I even shed some tears due to what I came across- it was certainly a roller coaster.
This reminded me a bit about susan Napier's mistress of the Groom- in the books I read the things the hero in that book did I thought were bad but this one. In jilted sits right on top of cruel heroes list but this guy redeemed himself at the end - so it was believable HEA.
My only qualms were the lack of clarity at the start of the book. it took me a while to work out where the skyler was from it was alluded to but it was a bit strange why it wasn't straight up stated. Was a bit confused.
I really love a story about a redeeming asshole, but I just couldn't love the one in this story. Ashley was OTT Grade A Immature Asshole, and I hated him. Hard to come back from that kind of hate. The story kept me interested until Skyler and the story went downhill from there.
Skylar and Ashley are to be married. On the day of their wedding Ashley shows up and tells Skylar he will not be marrying her. A devastated Skylar can't believe it, and tries to talk to her husband to be but Ashley tells her to get out of his life and stay out. Skylar leaves with her heart in pieces. Fast forward 5 years and they run into each other and things turn ugly, but what Ashley didn't know was he didn't leave Skylar alone at all and now the real games begin. Let me start by saying, I loved the concept of this book, the whole, leaving your bride to be at the alter and finding your way back to each other, usually makes for a good read, however this book was a bit lacking. I really hated Ashley, the male lead( I would never call him a hero), I get that he was mad and hurt because he believed his beloved had cheated on him and the evidence was damn near concrete. I get being angry and turning your back on her. I even get hating her and destroying her life, but I don't get how easily Skylar forgave him. Maybe its me but, there is no way you could do all the things to me Ashley did to Skylar and I would just fall back in with you when you find out it was all a lie, no. I don't think I would have ever got back with him, not ever. I am all about forgiving, but its harder to forget.
Wat 'n doos van 'n H. Eintlik, hulle almal is. Amper almal.
Against all the odds this heroine made something of herself and a wonderful life for her kids. I love the bond she shares with her family who are there for her throughout - now that's what I call love.
This hero is hellbent on destruction. He reads like Penny Jordan's old school bastard heroes who don't give an inch and whose aim in life is to destroy the h in the most cruel of ways. Instead of using that same determination to COMMUNICATE he goes on a rampage to bring the h down. In a big drama-filled all-you-can-eat fashion. For such a clever man, he sure is dumb. (I say this even as I know not to call people stupid, but dumb is dumb here)
The antagonists are the pits. His family: horrid, self serving, petulant, the-world-owes-me characters -the lot of 'em Her "bff" and her sexual predator cohorts need their hearts removed (sans anesthesia) cos they have never used it. Evil scum of the earth.
The lose ends are wrapped around my throat.
But he suffers so there's that. And she and the kids are happy so I'm happy.
Jilted reads like a very overdramatic soap opera. I love OTT soapy reads, but not for almost 350 pages… it’s just too long to sustain the whacky plot of roofies, public jilting, secret triplets, fake pregnancy, family drama, serial killer, betrayal… and all the slapping.
The book opens with Ashley cruelly rejecting poor Skylar at their wedding. He has good reason to think she’s a lying cheat, but rather than actually ask her to explain herself… he publicly humiliates her, threatens to run her over with his car, and takes off for their honeymoon with another bimbo.
Later, she goes to share some news… and has to endure getting bitch slapped by his nasty mother and threatened/thrown out of his office.
FFW- 5 years later where Skylar has managed to crawl up from the gutter Ashley threw her in, and has a decent life with a budding relationship with a Dr. Only for Ashley to cross her path yet again…. More slapping ensues…
All the secrets finally come out… and you guessed it…. more slapping…
Unfortunately, the two people (his terrible mother & sister) who deserved to be slapped the most get no slaps…and the asshole H only gets kneed in the balls once.
Bottom Line- I love a good dramatic plot but this was just a little too extra. (I might've rounded up had it been on KU) I know it was all unrealistic trash, but it really bothered me that the sister received no comeuppance. What she did was terrible, and she wasn’t even apologetic about it. She was defensive and tried to justify her actions. I wanted the h to press charges then they could work on forgiveness. To me it felt like Skylar got crapped on again because Ashley shouldn’t have forgiven them so easily. Hell, he was pissed at the h for 5 years for her alleged offense, and the sis’s was way worse… and illegal. It made no sense that the accomplice was deemed unforgivable, but the mastermind gets a second chance. ??!!

Soap opera elements. Everything is big. His reaction at the altar. That she gets pregnant ... with triplets. The support cast are all awful. The hero is a massive a*#ehole. He didn’t deserve a HEA
The Hero is really awful in this story. He jilts her at the altar after finding evidence she is cheating. He does not talk it through with her or allow to explain, admittedly the evidence is pretty damming but still his reaction, for years is extreme. He goes on to life a manwhore lifestyle even marrying a gold digger, though it is short-lived. There are no really intimate scenes with the Hero and other women but there is some gropping and references to them being intimate. The evidence is false but when this is discovered I couldn't understand why they didn't go to the police as an assault took place, even if family were involved. This book was one of the occasion when I felt the heroine might have been better off with someone else. There is an alternative love interest for the heroine but it is new so she has not been intimate with him yet. The Hero is so mean to the heroine, it is even mentioned that how can she trust him when he turned on her so quickly and has been so awful for so long. HEA. If you can believe she will be happy with him and he won't become completely unreasonable over something in the future. She does hesitate to take him back and he grovels, sort of but sometimes it goes too far and there is no redemption.

#ott #drama I should have read the reviews...this is OTT. A lot of misunderstandings and miscommunication, a doormat heroine, a lot of devil side characters interfering in the h and H relationship. Short summary: the heroine is left at the altar in an aggressive way. The H is accusing her of cheating and he has proof: photos of her in bed with OM. She is trying to tell him that the photos are fake but the H cuts her ut of his life. 3 years later he finds out that on the day that he walked away, he lost something else, and now is trying to understand what really happened there * 3 years too late if u ask me*.
The dialogues are stupid and unrealistic. When, as a mother, you find out that your daughter was drugged and then photographed with a guy in bed, because the photographer wanted to frame her, your reaction is 'wow'? This 'wow' is used in the book three times by three different characters when they hear the same story.
The hero forgives without a fight, instantly, his sister, the one that destroyed his relationship and kept him apart of his child for years, and then they are a happy family. 🤦 What a joke!
"Jilted" is an interesting book as it's not an easy romance but a story of pride, anger, hurt, and forgiveness. It actually reminds me a lot of another book by the author, "Whatever He Wants" in themes and tone.
While Skylar seems to have her head together, both before and eventually after Ashley's betrayal, he is a hot mess. "Jilted" is not simply a book on miscommunication between lovers. It's a book of what jealousy, pride, and fear can cost someone. And not just external factors contributing to the situation but deep-seeded personal fears as a silent wrecking ball.
Ashley is a tough male protagonist to like for at least half the book. Many a times I wanted to reach through the pages and punch him in the face until reality does a good job of slapping him in the face about his past choices. I liked seeing Ashley realize what a total jackass he'd been in his handling of things and the steps he takes to make things right. Skylar is a strong woman, even though Ashley's betrayal breaks her initially, and I enjoyed seeing her being prudent yet fair despite not being given a fair chance before things blew up.
It's a good read, especially for romance readers who like their books with a lot angst plus the overall message of forgiveness and redemption works.
No one writes a male lead as a total jerk as well as this author does. James Rothschild was one of the first jerks I read about by this author and she wrote him well. His redemption was epic.
Ashley is such a total JACKASS I had to stop reading the book and then go back to it days later when I had calmed down. Now I totally get that he had cause to doubt Skylar however to humiliate her in quite that way is very hard to understand. Even if you take into account his background. If you really love someone, even if they hurt you, you could not go after them in the way that he did. I don't think Ashley suffered nearly enough before his redemption. I think James was less of a jerk than Ashley and Noelle Greene made that man suffer.
A compelling read if not a totally maddening one. Definitely worth a read.
I'm sorry but if someone asked me to describe this book using only a sentence I would say: too little, too late... Ashley's betrayal and subsequent behavior to a harlequinsh plot twist was just too great to fit in 300 pages.
Hmmm, I liked it, but some things were too convenient, Ashley's mom was over-the-top bad and I always dislike when the heroine's best friend is an awful person, but at least she still had her family to fall back on and wasn't totally isolated from others save for the hero. I felt that the hero, Ashley, fell for the lies his family spun too quickly, and the reason his sister gave for ending his relationship was weak af. Skylar, after undergoing all of that trauma when the relationship crashed and burned, really did imo forgive him too quickly,I mean she must be saintly. And I also resented that she acted like she couldn't control her body's reaction to Ashley, especially after he cut her so deeply, but I guess that's just a universal romance trope, plus she was apparently a saint. The random threat from a serial killer was handled poorly and basically just put into the plot to get the H to moved into the heroine's house, pants and heart. Nevertheless, I still enjoyed reading this, even though there were several side eyes thrown .
p.s. Did she really need to have triplets tho? Babies are hella expensive, especially when you're jobless and broke.
Skylar and Ashley's story reminds me of why I fell in love with Eve Vaughn's work so many years ago. This is a classic love story wrought with deception, love, forgiveness, heartbreak and perseverance.
This story started off with a bang when Ashley humiliated Skylar at the altar; thinking she had betrayed him. The level of deception others went through to break them apart was unfathomable. Both made an attempt to get on with their lives but barely.
Fast forward five years later and a chance meeting brought back hurt feelings, jealousy and a feeling of helplessness. Secrets came to light as well as traitorous friends and family were finally revealed.
I love this story and hope to read more of the same from this author in the future.
This book had everything i hated. Yet i continued because i was waiting for the grovel. When the premise is this good [as you can guess from the blurb] the grovel would've been epic.
Things i hated in this book and in general:
~ Surprise Pregnancy trope ~ 5 year separation time gap ~ Heroine being celibate and hero is a manwhore in those 5 years. ~ h dumps the nice guy because H appeared, when she just started dating for the first time in 5 years too. ~ Obligations with toxic evil family [H side] ~ Heroine didn't needed actions, a few speeches here and there and one big speech at the end [96%] and she was won over. ~ Unnecessary OTT drama ~ Zero grovelling
And the occasional typos and grammatical mistakes didn't helped either. ರ_ರ
Unlikable, Snobby Hero --with a snobby name, Ashley Hollingsworth. Bride crushed, not just left at the altar on her wedding day. Hero called her all kinds of names. Sadly, a much too forgiving heroine.
Romance trope: left at the altar Length: 290 pages
Plot: Ashley and Skylar, despite their differences in background, seem like the perfect couple. On the day of their wedding, though, Ashley cruelt jilts her at the altar and Skylar must deal with the aftermath, including a surprise pregnancy that Ashley refuses to acknowledge. But what happens when he discovers that not everything is as it seems?
Commentary: So this is another one where I would never forgive him. I would never be able to look at him knowing he was that dumb and weak. I would never be able to trust him knowing that he really thought I was a lying, cheating whore. He so easily believed an unverifiable, anonymous note/photo/video, so much so that he wouldn't even ask her if it was true. All his crying about his childhood trauma? Poor baby. I'm so sad for him. Meanwhile, he left his children to grow up without a father because he can't deal with his own feelings. And his family? Pure trash. I understand having unresolved family issues. But I don't understand becoming such terrible people because your mommy isn't good at nurturing you. Ridiculous. I can't even fathom forgiving someone who did those things to me. This seems to be the theme of my reviews this morning - no forgiveness! Where are all of these awful people coming from?! And then there's the fact that he sexually assaults her in the bathroom and keeps her from getting a job at other law firms when she first leaves school. He is fairly violent in both words and actions throughout the story, toward Skylar and others. And why did it have to be triplets? Overkill! There wasn't even a good grovel. He didn't do anything except cry about his own pain. He could have started a foundation, lobbied for legislation, gone after the people who did the set-up (he's a lawyer, for crying out loud), done something other than say, I'm sorry, I had a bad mom, here's this house (that I already bought for you before all of this happened so I didn't actually have to do anything).
Anyways, this was a disappointment. There are bad partners out there. The point of romance is that the heroes are better than the bad partners from real life - they can be redeemed and be better. But not here, I guess!
2.25 stars. This was kind of unrealistic and the writing wasn't the best. What I didn't like about the book was how Skylar's rape was addressed. She was horrified to find out but then afterwards moved on without really thinking about it much. Plus, Ashley wasn't as outraged as he should've been that his sister played a role. i couldn't even imagine that happening to me but the author kind of used it as a minor plot point to drive the story like it was a blip on the radar. Although I did feel bad for Ashley because the photos and video wasn't technically falsified, there were so many things he could've done differently. Skylar definitely doesn't deserve him. I'm just glad that despite the fact that Ashley intentionally or unintentionally blocked off all career moves for her and having 3 kids, Skylar was able to take the bar and have a successful career. She could've easily drowned in all the responsibilities that came with being a single mother to triplets and worked as a waitress day in and day out. Plus, Ashley barely did anything to fix his mistakes, which really bugged me.

This was so bad that I am having a hard time stopping myself from cursing this book. I know authors work hard and writing a book ain't an easy thing so I try not to be harsh with my words.
However, I dunno how to say I hated this book without harsh words. Long story short, the hero left heroine because of a misunderstanding and then got married. He was spineless. After he found out that he had children, he started acting like he was robbed off of something even though it was his fault. What annoyed me the most is this guy never seemed to come to a conclusion that Skyler suffered more than him. She almost died, raised three kids alone. Even in the last page you'd see him saying, " I suffered ten times more when I broke your heart." No, you didn't. At least make one sincere apology without whining about "things" you've been through. He was whiny, rude, stupid and so annoying. He had a troubled childhood and used it as an explanation for his poor behaviour. I am not willing to cut him any slack, using past trauma to cover for actual mistakes is shitty and he should know it. Ashley was the worst hero of all times.
Now onto Skyler. Where's your pride woman ? Dying because an undeserving man left you, having sex with him right after knowing his sister drugged you to break off your wedding. Always giving him the upper hand, always laying every bit of self respect on ground for him to walk on. Normally single moms inspire me but Skyler was anything but inspiring. Also what was the need to show that she had been celibate even after Ashley left her at the alter. He slept around, she stayed "untouched". It felt like the author wanted to give Ashley rewards for being a cowardly, easily manipulated man.
I'm done !

More like 2.5. I actually like the concept but not the lead characters. The things that Ashley(who even angry is still and never stopped being, in love with Skylar) did and said to her was horrible and not so easy to forget-even with children involved. I was baffled through out this whole book and found myself skipping ahead a lot just to get done quick. I've read a few books by Eve Vaughn that I really enjoyed but sadly this is not one of them. The whole jilted lover-left at the alter idea pulled me in but the whole story kicked my ass out with pleasure. There were just too many things I disliked all through this story. Sorry not Sorry
