A Tale of Christian Spiritual Warfare. This is a Christian fantasy story about a group of Christian believers who are called to do battle with the evil forces that operate in this world, usually unseen, but Yeral E. Ogando brings them to light through his story. In this story, first Anthony is given a miraculous ability to see them in the spiritual realm, and to do battle with evil spirits. As unexpected as his conversion as a new Christian is, Anthony is more surprised to begin to see and hear things as the voice of God and Jesus Christ guide him to do battle with a great deal of help from the Elite Commander, first for himself as a selfish man with a weakness for alcohol, then for others as one by one new believers join the fight. The spiritual world becomes more and more real to them as each one witnesses the spiritual events that are occurring around them. If you liked Narnia and other stories of Christian literature you will enjoy this book.It is easy to read and full of adventure. It is enjoyable to read a story about spiritual warfare that is approachable and entertaining.

I am 39 years old and have to say, without a doubt, this is one of the most compelling, thought-provoking and inspirational books I have ever read. I accepted Jesus as my Savior when I was 15. I have worked as a Youth Minister and Drama Director. I have preached. I have always been aware that Christians face a spiritual battle each day. Each time we claim victory over any form of temptation, it's a spiritual victory over darkness. However, many times I lose site of this because I can't actually 'see' it. This book has changed that for me. It's made me realize how much of a Spiritual battle is raging around us - a battle that many of us can't see - a battle for our very soul. This book has compelled me many times to fall to my knees and thank God for watching over me and protecting me from the things I can't see. I am encouraged now more than ever to truly seek what's God's true calling and purpose is for me - I have a renewed since of energy and desire to serve in HIS Army - no matter what it may require.

Scripture Comes Alive! Powerfully Engaging, Awe-Inspiring, Life-Changing Exceptional Novel!!!

“I’ve held a sword in my hand, seen a demon, and I’ve recognized the reality of what really goes on behind the scenes. My life is never going to be the same again.”

The Elite Commander is calling up an army. Not just any army, an army of those who may be considered unworthy. But God calls the unworthy and makes them worthy. Anthony, who faced the end of a gun before answering the call. His sister, Janet, always served the Lord, but lacked courage and boldness. Michael is facing prison for drunk driving and killing 3 people. His wife, Deborah who loves God, but whose life has been shattered by Michael’s drinking and rage. However, all now stand ready to face the demons of darkness with sword and armor, ready to take on the call God has placed on them. Warriors in God’s army. The question is who will be called next will it be Anthony’s wife Becky and young son Ben? Who else will be called to Ohio to join the team? What demons will they encounter –fear, hostility, despair and sorrow or others? Only time will tell…

What an amazing book! Spiritual warfare with the demons of darkness, humans called out from the pit of despair, God’s grace and forgiveness, the authority of God’s name, the power of the Holy Spirit, everyday people becoming superheroes and there is even more to this book to even list! I’ve always felt Christian novels needed to be more than a sweet, clean story. They need to cause us to ponder and think- walking away changed and Yeral does not fail, In fact he more than exceeded my expectations. Christian readers will be inspired, encouraged and captivated by this outstanding book. The characters are real and engaging, the writing superb. Scripture came alive before my very eyes. “Left Behind”, “The Screwtape Letters”, “The Shack” and “This Present Darkness” rolled into one epic novel that I couldn’t put down. I wasn’t the same after reading “Awareness” and (this is only book one!) and I guarantee no one else will be either. Pondering the question, are we ready to answer the call? Remarkable must read for all Christians and those seeking.

Fascinating, Empowering, Powerful, Inspirational

I chose this rating because I truly loved the book. I feel as though I learned so much. The spiritual battle between good and evil is portrayed so well. I enjoyed getting to know the characters and I rooted for them. You have to have respect for God and the constant battle going on that some believers are given the ability to see. I liked seeing lives transformed with imperfect people who make mistakes just like the rest of us. I recommend this book for others especially Christians.

The first volume of The Hero Within series, Awareness, is a classic work of Christian fiction. It is built around a world that is oblivious to the spiritual forces engaged in warfare and battle for the human heart. In the tradition of the Left Behind series, Ted Dekker, and Frank Peretti, the author, Yeral Ogando, brings to mind all the best qualities to a Christian fiction story. Bringing all sorts of characters into play, some of the book plays out like “slices of life,” but with an overshadowing conflict of how people need to choose to be better and choose God and cling to virtue. Overall, it is an inspirational work of fiction that would be enjoyable to any individual who loves Christian fiction.

Awareness reads slightly different from regular Christian works, on the basis that Ogando writes with a little more literary flair. For the regular reader of the genre this may be off-putting, but for those who don’t frequent Christian fiction, this may allow for an easier avenue to enjoy the story. The spiritual elements of the book are the most engaging and for the Christian believer, they will be the most edifying. I found Ogando’s use of the faith and virtue to be the best parts of this book. The way these all interact with our protagonists in the book; Anthony, a man waiting for the end, Janet, who is so timid even with faith, Michael, a drunk, and Deborah, who deals with doubt. I think all of their struggles reflect our own in most ways and thereby help bring us further into the story.

Ogando’s strength lies in applying the themes from scripture and making them real in our modern world. In a culture that continually seeks to sap the spiritual sphere of any power, Ogando seeks to replenish and establish that piece that has been missing from our lives for so long. Christian fiction isn’t known for this, and usually only flirts with such robust spiritual narratives and conflicts, but Awareness goes a step further and truly lives up to its title.

The only words of criticism I have towards the book is the pacing considering that it falls into the usual literary trope of milling around at first before it gets its legs. Ogando uses too many characters as well, which weigh the narrative down and makes the reader have to keep a running tally of who we are talking about in the book. And also not sold on the gimmicky cliffhanger.

All in all, a good first entry to a series.

Generally, I think five-star reviews should be used only for masterpieces, but I would give this inspiring novel 4.5 stars. The main character is Anthony Markson who, when introduced to the reader is drinking too much at The Rat's Nest Bar. Markson does not win many accolades as a husband and father but he truly does love his wife and son. Then a dramatic, close to "Road to Damascus" overtakes him when he is almost killed in a robbery. He becomes a Christian and some remarkable adventures begin. The author has a sense of humor. In a dream when Markson hears the Lord he says, "It wasn't a burning bush but it got my attention," One of the first things the Lord asks his new servant is to testify to a drunk driver who killed three people. Which is a tough job for a first assignment. Dr. Ogando has the grace of God flowing through his book and does it without getting preachy. I'm assuming the Dr. Ogando is a relatively new writer. The weaknesses of a new writer is telling not showing, plus characters are often one-dimensional so the reader doesn't really identify with them. But readers are drawn in to care about Markson. He is three-dimensional and you do care about him and the situations he faces. Without being phony or false, the reader also appreciates the grace and love of God that is shown in the novel. The prose is good, better than you'd expect from a new writer. Didn't think there was a false note in the book. Very, very good novel.

I received book one as a gift and I read it. I loved it. Then I purchase book two, it felt like I was in some kind of movie, battle field with angels and demons. I felt like spiritual world made sense to me. I never saw things like the author showed in these two books. I am looking for a third book or any other fiction book for Mr. Yeral Ogando. Congratulations.

Christian Fiction

Ogando has created a character who recognizes the call of God and accepts, soon creating a small team which can see the demons affecting others. I don't have a problem with the plot, but did find the abrupt surrender a little too quick. For those of us who struggle to hear the Lord, it seems a little soon, but perhaps that is a bit of envy speaking... lol

This book was amazing! I really loved the characters. It shows that the characters are human and they make mistakes. The spiritual battles keep me glued to my Kindle. I just finished the first book and purchased the second one. Can't wait to start!
