The Learning Factory

Learning on your own is hard. Schools don't spend much time teaching students how to learn, and instead focus on what to learn - usually in order to pass standardized tests. Even worse, what they do teach is often flat out wrong. This leaves most people unprepared to effectively learn on their own, and usually creates a feeling of helplessness.

An simple but effective guide on how to learn - anything - better.

Eddleman provides a practical approach, based on sound theoretical foundations, of how to improve the way you learn. "The Learning Factory" is concise, at 150 pages, and straight to the point: this is what you need to do, this is why you need to do it, and this is how you can go about doing it right now. There is a strong emphasis on developing good learning habits and building up from five minutes a day to an effective lifetime learning habit. Eddleman's approach does everything to overcome the barriers that might otherwise stop you from becoming a better learner, and demolishes some dangerous myths along the way.

The book references several pieces of free software (Anki, Pomodoro) and many online resources and how they can help you. The idea is that this will allow you to build your own learning factory: from the bare bones provided in the book, you can build up a customised, personalized learning factory that will meet your own needs. If you can put in those five minutes, "The Learning Factory" can help you.

An earnest and well researched resource for anyone looking to learn anything more effectively and efficiently. I'll never again waste time highlighting lines of text in hopes of cementing the passages in my brain. Instead, Eddleman recommends scientifically sound ways to memorize and retain, something any collector of knowledge is sure to appreciate.
