Dokáže Titania projevit odvahu a zachránit krále před úkladnou vraždou? A nalezne na konci dlouhé cesty své vlastní štěstí?
Born in 1901, Barbara Cartland started her writing career in journalism and completed her first book, Jigsaw, when she was just 24. An immediate success, it was the start of her journey to becoming the world’s most famous and most read romantic novelist of all time. Inspiring a whole generation of readers around the globe with her exciting tales of adventure, love and intrigue, she became synonymous with the Romance genre. And she still is to this day, having written over 644 romantic fiction books. As well as romantic novels, she wrote historical biographies, 6 autobiographies, plays, music, poetry and several advice books on life, love, health and cookery – totalling an incredible 723 books in all, with over 1 billion in sales. Awarded the DBE by Queen Elizabeth II in 1991 in honour of her literary, political and social contributions, she was President of the Hertfordshire branch of the Royal College of Midwives as well as a Dame of Grace of the Order of St John of Jerusalem and Deputy President of the St John Ambulance Brigade. Always a passionate advocate of woman’s health and beauty, she was dubbed ‘the true Queen of Romance’ by Vogue magazine in her lifetime. Her legend continues today through her wonderfully vivid romantic tales, stories that help you escape from the day to day into the dramatic adventures of strong, beautiful women who battle, often against the odds, eventually to find that love conquers all.
Another historical romp from BC with a twisting plot line. The book is called the king without a heart and it turns out (spoiler alert) that he actually does have a heart. Who could have seen that one coming. Certainly not me. I do feel the stepmother of the king got very bad press in the book. All that she is accused of is of being a German and not liking ornaments and yet the King speaks of her as a heartless woman who ruined his childhood. Well, I suppose she did "get rid of his dog" but she may just have sent it to live with a kind family in the country, and lets face it, some dogs can be annoying. It finishes by the good living happily ever after. How nice.
I love Barbara Cartland's books. Sometimes they are just what I need. Something cute, something adorable, something sweet and something old-fashioned, without sex scenes every other page.
Another thing I like is that even though her heroines are inexperienced, they are always spirited, smart and well-educated.
I read this book when I was about 9ish years old - I just read it again - I loved it then I love it now- Back then I would have given it a 5 stars but now I will stick with a 4 star-
Lovely story about two broken hearts, one hopeful, one not at all but together they will discover happily ever after.
Spoiler
The king without a heart is mistreated as a child by his stepmother- who is not evil as one have read in other books but one who had much prefer her own son to be kin- Now, as far as his half brother -well he is evil after all he not only plots to kill the king (his half brother) but actually acts upon it -thankfully the king was ready for it.
Now, our heroine Tatiana- has her own sad story and although often cries has a little sassy to her- her thoughts towards her cousin Sophie have spunk, even if her actions are the opposite.
Tatiana over hears the plan to kill the king and tells him all about it- her courage makes the king accept the feelings he has for her and with the little help of many prayers finds the heart he lost long ago.
This one had the typical set up of a Barbara Cartland novel. A woman who lost her parents has to live with nasty relatives, and take up some kind of governess / lady's maid role.
This was a much quieter novel than others. The climax wasn't as raucous. This was nice, as it gave Titania (Not Tatiana) more time to develop as a character. She was still a Mary Sue, but there wasn't instalove, like the others. Her getting to know the king was refreshing.
Sophie was another antagonist. Like, seriously, Cartland can write some spoiled bitches. They are unrealistic, but fun.
I remember reading Barbara Cartland romances when I was in high school and loving them. The period, the clothes, the places, and, of course, the romance. They are clean with no bodice ripping and swearing. They are sometimes a bit too saccharine but I still enjoy them. I don't like all the religious aspects but they are easy to overlook.
Light and short read if you want to read something with a fairytale tone and not too intense, this is good read to pass the time, reminds me of dime novels, with the formula of hero, anti hero and plot is resolved quickly.
This was... an experience. Super fluffy and dated. But I had to rate it highly because if I continue reading more Cartland books, I’m sure my first one will turn out to be my favorite.
